Seorido Shrine in Miho, Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City!

When it comes to Shinto Shrines Shizuoka Prefecture is big enough and has enough history to provide visitors with discoveries. Shinto Shrines are never that big here, except for a very few, but they are many, and unfortunately most are forgotten, but the more mysterious for it.
I’m not a religious man, but I love architecture, art and history, and the discovery of the smallest detail can be more fulfilling than visiting grandiose but crowded monuments in world famous touristic spots!

The other day cycling along a road parallel to the Miho Beach in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, I discovered this shrine out of the blue.
Built no less than 1200 years ago, it goes under the ame of Seorido Shrine/瀬織戸神社.
Also called Bentensama/辨天様, it is dedicated to the Shinto Godess Seoritsuhime/瀬織津姫 and is devoted to the welfare of fishermen among others.

Like any shinto shrine the access paved lane climbs up the small hill under a torii gate.

Although the paved land around it of origin it must have built all over again many times!

It is always a good idea to look at the eaves of such buildings as they reveal old parts!

Shizuoka Sake Tasting: Hana No Mai Brewery-Junmai Nama

I still continue the 300 ml bottles!
I noticed that many of them sold in markets are nama/unpasteurized. A coincidence?

Hana no Mai Brewery in Hamamatsu City must actually be the brewery using the largest variety of bottles in Shizuoka Prefecture!

This particular one is junmai (no pure rice alcohol added) nama (unpasteurized)!

Rice: Shizuoka-grown Yamada Nishiki 100%
Yeast: Own yeast
Rice milled down to 60%
Dryness: + 3.5
Alcohol: 14~15 degrees
Bottled on May 21st, 2014

Clarity: Very clear
Color: Transparent
Aroma: Dry, floral and fruity. Banana, green apples, pears.
Body: Fluid
Taste: Very dry and fruity attack backed up by some junmai petllant.
Dry melons, hints of pears and nuts.
Lingers only for a short while.
Gets drier with food with appearance of greens. Tends to take a back with food. Reasserts itself once away from food with appearance of oranges.
Takes on a sweet turn with cheese with the appearance of coffee beans.

Overall: In spite of its dryness, a sake conceived for young people, ladies in particular.
As it marries well with Western food, it could become a superb aperitif, although I would suggest enjoying it with cheese.
At its best slightly chilled!

Cafe Patisserie: Sud Bouquet in Shizuoka City!

Service: Very kind and deferential. Sophisticated

When Shunsuke Kasai/笠井俊介さん retired and sold his cafe patisserie called “Bouquet” at the time near Cenova Department Store in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, a lot of people felt the loss.
But Ms Toshiko Aoshima/青島登志子さん convinced to join her in a new collaboration venture in Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City to open a cafe patisserie in her own home under the new name of Sud Bouquet some 18 months ago!

Expats or newcomers and tourists in Shizuoka City who wish to find better than average but still very reasonable sushi should have a good look at the sushi lunch sets on sale around lunch at Parche Market inside Shizuoka JR Station next to the fish stands!

All at the same 500 yen price, less than 5 US $ before tax, and still less than 5 US $ after tax!
A bargain even for Shizuoka people!
The same offer is on display at lunch time from Monday to Friday but make a point to come early to grab the best bits!
What did they offer today?
Note the fish all comes from the fish market next to the sushi food stands insuring maximum freshness! Incidentally it would be a good idea to have a good look at the same market to discover the wealth in seafood available in our region!

Kaisen bara chirashi: Mixed seafood sushi bowl! The fish is already seasoned atop sushi rice and you can ask for disposable chopsticks when you pay your purchase. Chirashi is very popular as you can sample many kinds of seafood in the same lunch box!

Tekkadon: tuna sushi bowl! Now, even in Tokyo you will  be hard set to find such a bargain! Thanks to Shimizu Ku (Shizuoka City) and Yaizu harbor, tuna is available all year round in Shizuoka Prefecture at reasonable prices!

Yamakake: Tuna and grated yam sushi bowl! Now, this a Shizuoka specialty as grated yam dishes date back from Edo times! An acquired taste but very healthy!

Aji tatakidon: Chopped horse mackerel sushi bowl! Shizuoka Prefecture, especially Yui in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, is famous all over Japan for its many varieties of horse mackerel!

Wall Painting: Food & Tourism on Water Tank in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

The other day I was cycling along a street parallel to the Miho Beach in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, when I espied this unusual water tank!

Interesting way to advertise Shimizu Ku.
Actually the area is quite remarkable for quite a few similar sights!

I knew that Shimizu was noted for its strawberries and oranges, but I didn’t know about roses!

Today, although I had not planned any lunch (on a diet these days!) I nonetheless got tempted when a friend of mine sent the picture of a new seasonal gnocchi by Chef Akira Oheda at Papa Restaurant in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

No eggs used incidentally, so very healthy!
