Weird Japan (9): Crow or Kappa?

Found this strange statue near a home entrance in Takajo, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City.
It is perched on a volcanic basalt rock.
The more I looked at it the more it lokked like a kappa than a crow!

His talons are more reptilian than aviary and why does it wear a cape?

Now, its eyes are definitely those of a kappa!

Weird Japan (8): 25,000,000 Yen “Monument”

Slowly filling with water…

Suudenly tipping over…

Pouring its contents out…

This “little monument” had been ordered by a former Mayor of Shizuoka City during the Bubble Era from a French (my own country &%%$##$%&%)…
While it is fun to watch, it cost no less than 25,000,000 yen (250,000 Euros, 350,000 US$) to the city tax payers!

Mind you, I must be weird because I had to take the last picture no less than five times in sub zero temperature!

Fur-coated T. Rex!

It’s been very cold recently in Shizuoka City which rarely sees tempratures go under zero (Celsius) and some people are taking care of their pets!

Fur-coated Stegosaurus!

There is a fashion clothes shop in Shichiken-cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City which displays a collection of fairly big dinosaurs in their shop window and eevery winter they make a point to comfort them with real fur collars in spite of keeping them indoors!

Weird japan (5): What kind of school is that?

Would you believe that most pupils at this elementary school go to top Unversities?
Found out that the City of Shizuoka made that sign when I questioned the Headmaster who wouldn’t take reponsibility for it!
They have pasted a correction above it since then!

Weird japan (4): Star Wars Avatar?

I don’t have a clue what that statue inside a large Shinto Shrine in Shuzenji, Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka represents!
It could be very well be the “face” of a famous monk of old.
To me it looks more like an avatar of Star Wars that fell there from space!

Weird Japan (3): Japanese Viper Sake/Mamushi Sake: A Drink for Sex?

The other night I had to go to the lavatory in a fairly busy and popular izakaya (sorry, I won’t tell you the name!) in Shizuoka City.
The “Mens” and “Ladies” were separate (important detail!).
I found this “notice” pinned on the wall at eye-level.
The notice says:
“Genki no nai Otoko wa mamushi sake!”/Viper Sake for people (men) not feeling energetic!”
This is real sake in which a snake was marinated!
The note says above that you should be careful not to drink too much, or you will suffer from nosebleed (Japanese men supposedly go through this predicament when their libido is overstimulated!).
Actually, orders are limited to a single glass. It had better work as it costs a whopping 25 US$!
Last, but not least, as if men needed more incentive, they added a picture of a “well-endowed” man (face not shown!) wearing snake skin pants!

N.B.: A lady friend in our party told us later that there was nothing hanging on the wall inside the ladies’ facilities!

Weird Japan (2): Junk Food Bar in Shizuoka City!

Someone will have to explain the meaning of the word “junk” to some people here! LOL
Maybe they are confusing junk food with fast food, although I would like to know what they mean by “soul” as well!

Americans will understand that “Jumbo Dog” probably means “Jumbo Hot Dog”, but what is a “Got Burger” or “Junk Rice”?

They are quite insistent about it with “Junk Food & Bar” pasted on the entrance door!

Weird Japan (1): Don’t set the Department Store on Fire!

Seen at Cenova Department Store in Shizuoka City!

The fact that is the safest country in the World sometimes leads to excessive precautions and warnings!
Hazardous Materials (probably wrong choice of word there…) should be prohibited anywhere!
I totally agree with banning smoking!
But who would try to set a department store on fire?

The fact that the sign is almost at ground level be hind a constantly moving sliding glass door might explain why people haven’t paid any notice!
I wonder what the Chinese and Korean translations say?

Food Humor: Pervert Daikon or Three-legged Wonder?

Whereas big supermarkets in larger towns such as Tokyo and what else who are “serious” about their products and their displays, local shops do not hesitate to show and sell the tricks of nature!

Actually, and this very seriously, people living in rural Japan are in fact quite happy to discover such natural wonders as they are considered as symbols of fertility (just look around in Japanese countryside, and you are bound to discover all kinds of seriously venerated tricks of nature!).

This particular daikon was displayed by (Farmers Market) Japan Bazaar in Shimada City!

Food Humor: Not tonight, Darling!

My good friend, Bernard Heberle, who has been elected the best patissier in Shizuoka Prefecture in 2011 seems to have some time on his hands despite the mountain of work. An amateur of food humor, he regularly sends me photos featuring some pretty/nasty art on food.
I thought it would be a shame not to feature them from time to time to add a light note/seasoning to this blog!
