Violet Beer?
And Japanese beer at that?
Yes, from Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu Island by Hideji Beer Brewery!

SN3O0053

It is actually an amber ale made with Murasaki Imo/violet sweet potatoes!
It is actually more pink that violet, but it is still beautiful!
Better hurry as there is little left!

Bryan Baird Newsletter (2014/02/28): Seasonal Release: Morning Coffee Stout

Baird Beer & Taproom Events Bulletin
bryan-sayuri.gif

Seasonal Release: Morning Coffee Stout

Dear Taproom Friend & Baird Beer Enthusiast:

Sayuri and I first began writing this beer news and events email bulletin in December 2001. At the time we were a two-person team working feverishly as chef and brewer at our promising, but fledgling, little brewery-pub in Numazu — the Fishmarket Taproom. These were the days before we had a website or any other mechanism, save word-of-mouth patron proselytization, for getting news out about our beer and our pub events. We built our mailing list by asking patrons to write down their email addresses for us. Slowly the list grew, and so did our business.

This will be the final Baird Beer News and Taproom Events Email Bulletin in the format that you have come to know. We will be unveiling a new website very shortly and in conjunction with the new site we will be changing our mode of communication to a bi-monthly e-newsletter to be called Baird Beer Voice. This change represents progress and improvement. The Baird Beer Voice will be a communication platform that gives voice not simply to myself and Sayuri but also to other of our important colleagues and partners in this business. We look forward delivering the first issue to you on March 3rd.

New Baird Beer Seasonal Releases:
*Morning Coffee Stout (7%):

Each year we combine our passion for stout with our love of coffee in the brewing of Morning Coffee Stout. This 2014 version is an export-style stout infused with freshly roasted (delivered still warm direct from the roaster of our friends at Arabica Coffee) organic fair-trade beans from Peru. We add these beans — whole, without grinding – directly to the stout in the conditioning tank in what amounts to a cold beer toddy extraction method. The result is a perfectly balanced flavor marriage between stout beer and java beans.

Morning Coffee Stout debuts Saturday, March 1 at all of our Taproom pubs in a special Morning Coffee Stout Brunch. It also is available for immediate release from our brewery in both kegs (15-liter and 20-liter) and bottles (360 ml). If you enjoy both the flavors of stout beer and coffee, this is a treat not to miss.

Taproom Beer Events:
*Morning Coffee Stout Brunch (Saturday-Sunday, March 1-2: Doors open at 11:00 am except at Nakameguro which opens to early birds at 10:00 am):

Chef Joon and the kitchen staffs have put together wonderful and distinct brunch menus to complement your enjoyment of Morning Coffee Stout. We hope you can enjoy some of your weekend together with us.

Cheers!

Bryan Baird

Entirely Non-Smoking Restaurants (& Bars) in Shizuoka Prefecture (Amended regularly)

TETSUA-SUGIMOTO

Beautiful Vegetables at Tetsuya Sugimoto in Shizuoka City!

I agree that this particular article has been long overdue.
Not only my expats friends, but many Japanese friends have been at pains at finding restaurants, bars and cafes where they wouldn’t have to put up with the hazards and stink of smoke inhaled and expelled by uncaring customers.
Some time ago I mentioned partially non-smoking restaurants but I see little point to mention them unless the entirely non-smoking times are clearly announced and respected!

This is of course not an exhaustive list, but it will be regularly updated as I visit establishments for work!
There is no special order to this list, they come as they come!

One more important point: Non-smoking is not the only criterion, good food is, too!
If you are kind enough to recommend me restaurants not introduced here it will be my pleasure to survey them!

Prices: Reasonable for such big servings!
Strong points: Very generous cafe/bistro multi-genred gastronomy. Great variety. Great products. Entirely non-smoking in very modern atmosphere. Great books!

SN3O0177

Notwithstanding the quaint English translation I found an interesting concept in BLUE BOOKS cafe’s lunch menu the other day:
White-fleshed fish deep-fried in kadaif! Kaidaf is also called “Angel’s hair” and is made of fine strings of translucent pasta originating from the Middle East you can easily find in Japan these days.

SN3O0178

My lunch set of the day!
Now, what did we have here?

SN3O0182

A view of the three main ingredients!

SN3O0183

Plenty of tomato and other vegetables (Shizuoka-grown) for great balance!

SN3O0184

Great spinach fettucine cooked al dente!

SN3O0179

Ammerican comfort food: corn bread!

SN3O0180

As usual fine green salad for even better balance!

SN3O0181

And plenty of tea to wash it all down!

To be continued,… You bet!

Kura: Japanese Traditional Warehouses in Shizuoka Prefecture 12: Kita Shin Ishikura Gallery, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City

“Kura” (in Japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditional Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

SN3O0053

the other day as I was looking around Jirosho area in Shimizuoka, Shizuoka City for more old kuras, I almost missed this one peeking above a wooden gate!

SN3O0054

i decided to put on my impertinent coat on and investigate at the risk of breaking somebody’s privacy!

SN3O0055

It certainly looked very intriguing as it definitely seemed to be used in spite of his ancient look!

SN3O0056

I checked the old door, but it was locked up!

SN3O0057

I checked behind and found the dustbins sitting beside another door. Intriguing….

SN3O0060

i was about to give up when I noticed another grand door with a sign saying Kita Shin Ishikura Gallery!
Well. well…
I was still about to leave when a grand lady just came out of the smae door.
I politely inquired what the kura was all about!

SN3O0058

She kindly explained that at one time she was about to have the edifice pulled but friends convinced her to preserve it and even transform it into a kind a gallery space for rent!
The place inside is exquisite indeed with some very remarkable decoration made up with existing wood material inside!

SN3O0059

Edo time rafters!

Unluckily the inside was a bit too dark for good photographing.
The lady also mentioned that private parties and concerts were also held there.
A place I will definitely have to visit again at length!

French Gastronomy: Lunch at Chez Mont-Pierre in Shizuoka City!

Service: Very friendly, accommodating and helpful
Equipment & Facilities: Superb cleanliness overall. Extravagant washroom. Entirely non-smoking. Separate room for families with children.
Prices:V ery reasonable considering the quality and generosity
Strong points: High class Classical French gastronomy with a modern and inventive touch. Excellent wine list.

As I said before, Shizuoka City is divided into 3 distinct wards, Aoi Ku, Suruga Ku, and Shimizu Ku. Suruga Ku south of Shizuoka JR Station is rapidly evolving into a gastronomic area to provide for a growing population and palliate for the congested Aoi Ku north of Shizuoka JR Station.

SN3O0143

Chef Kenichi Meguro/目黒研一さん at Chez Mont-Pierre is, without a doubt, the reference when it comes to French gastronomy in the whole of Suruga Ku!
It is a bit away from everywhere but they do own a big enough car park!

SN3O0144

The two single menus proposed for lunch are very good value and you definitely need to call beforehand to make sure a table is free!

SN3O0145

I decided to order the second menu for the sheer curiosity of it!

SN3O0146

Classical atmosphere!
But don’t worry, they do not ask guests to overdress for the occasion.
Actually, for all the grand impression one can really relax and enjoy the occasion at ease!

Seasonal steamed vegetables, seasoned with “Sudachi lemon”, vegetable puree topped with a fresh salad. Three dishes in one as it also includes seafood!
All the vegetables are grown in Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0164

Another look at the salad!

SN3O0165

The seafood made up succulent clams!

SN3O0166

The vegetables and vegetables puree!

SN3O0167

I opted for the fish as the main course! The meat will be for another visit!

SN3O0168

Madai/seabream with vegetables garland and fruit sauce!

SN3O0169

The flowers are edible!

SN3O0171

The pre-dessert!

SN3O0172

Milk pudding and sherry wine jelly!

SN3O0170

The first dessert trolley!
But wait for the second coming together!

SN3O0162

The second trolley!
This must the best cake trolley choice in the whole Prefecture!
No less than 13 superb home-made cakes!
I suspect that many ladies among my neighbors came for this sole purpose!
Everyone around me seemed to have at least 3 (and more!) cuts on their plate!
But I chose only one.
Actually the waitress guessed my choice!

SN3O0173

Tarte Tatin!

SN3O0174

Sheer extravagant simplicity!

SN3O0175

And coffee as it should be served!

Yes, I did have a glass of wine (white!)!

SN3O0176

And don’t forget to check the section of biscuits/cakes on sale at the entrance!

Grand time the Michelin Guide visited Shizuoka!
