American Bar Restaurant: Lunch at Paradiso in Minato Yokocho, Mochimune, Shizuoka Ciy!

Minato Yokocho front!

Service: kind and attentive if a bit shy (at first!)
Equipment & facilities: overall very clean. Shared but very clean and complete washroom.
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: Great open hamburgers (“hambaagu” in Japanese!). Craft beers (although they tend to disappear quickly!)

Picture of the old Minato Yokocho!

Some time ago, CSA Real estate Co., actually based in Mochimune, among other projects took on to renew completely the old derelict Minato/harbor Yokocho/Alley to invite existing and new tenants to provide a much needed food and drinks site to the ever increasing number of tourists. Moreover, since bathers are rarer and rarer on the beach most shacks and bars have disappeared from the sea front it has become a natural spot to patronize as it caters for so many tastes and priorities!
I have already visited and written about a few places and will continue for some time!

This time I visited Paradiso!

Take your time and have a good look at the menu boards outside since it includes good pictures!
Lunch sets are a good bet and very reasonable!

Very simple but very clean settings including seats at tables and counter bar!

Craft beers on offer but they tend to change and disappear quickly! LOL
Night owls will find it very practical, too!

It was our first visit and that at lunch so we opted for almost the same set lunch!
Above is the Missus’ order: Wagyu (yes, you read it!) hambaaguu (Japanese style open hamburger)!
Ridiculously reasonable price at 1080 yen!

My own version!

But with two deep-fried prawns! For 1380 yen!

But don’t overlook the Kuroge/black hair wagyu gyusuji/tendon curry, the tako/octopus rice and fried food set lunch including prawns, oysters and fish! All accompanied with a small salad!

Can you guess what I will have next time? LOL

American Gastronomy: Double Over Rice Lunch at Tequila’s Diner in Shizuoka City!

Service: Shy but very attentive
Equipment and Facilities: Overall very clean. Superb toilets. “Veranda seats” by fine weather in warm season
Prices: Reasonable considering the size of the portions!
Strong points: Hamburgers and other American favorites

Slow food prepared on order!

Tequila’s Diner, although they have acquired fame far beyond our Prefecture, is not all about hamburgers, be it lunch or dinner!
They have super lass rice dishes including double over, triple over, dirty rice and garlic rice! Perfect for people who fancy a change from bread/buns and an easier way to eat basically the same food!

And don’t forget to check all the drinks available, especially the small fridge near the entrance full of canned craft beers!

My order of the day: Double Over Rice Avocado & Cheese!
Now, talking of cheese thus is definetly far better than some vauted places who served their fare with suparmrket sliced cheese! And the avocado is big and soft, the chips plentiful!
The patty is cut by knife everyday for a superb bite and grilled over charcoal! Extravagant!

Another (hamburger) article coming soon!

American Gastronomy: American Hamburger at California Diner JACKAL in Shizuoka City!

Service: Shy but very attentive
Equipment and Facilities: Overall very clean. Excellent washroom
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: American hamburgers, Tex Mex cuisine, American craft beer and good variety of drinks.

This was my first visit because it had been recommended by an American friend of mine (from Mid West, not California! LOL). For me it was on he other side of town but I bravely rode my bicycle and reached the place 20 minutes later. It is a bit away from the hubbub of Shizuoka City but it has a car park and it is busy for both lunch and dinner!

The lay out is simple with a counter bar and tables and seats but comfortable enough.

I went there for lunch but night owls will be happy to learn that there a good enough variety of drinks from American craft beers to very powerful spirits !

The lunch menu! Only in Japanese but the language is the same! I am pretty sure they manage enough English for explanations!

As it was my first visit I kept my order simple: Cheese and bacon hamburger!

With one of my favorite American carft beers: Anchor Brewing!

Served with salad!

Plenty of French fries (chips in England!)!

The hamburger! Reall appetizing!

When it comes to eating a hamburger I do not follow “tradition”! I do not insert in a paper wrapping and eat it whole. I just like to to open it and it element by element!

Tasty meat with a good bite as it should be!

Now, there were many other tempting things on the menu! I surely don’t mind cycling again to sample the other tidbits!

American Gastronomy and Craft Beers at “12” in Shizuoka City!

Service: Shy but very kind and attentive
Equipment: Spotless clean. Excellent washroom. Non smoking
Prices: Slighly expensive
Strong Points: American craft beers. Excellent bar food. Beers regularly changed. Large live sports screens.

“12” is an unusual name for a bar or restaurant. The owner, a fan of all sports in Seattle, USA, be they the Seattle Supersonics basketball tea, the Seattle Seahawks American football team or the Seattle Mariners baseball team, has taken a liking for their number “12” jerseys, hence the name of the stablishment. Incidentally all the games of these teams can be viewed live or later on no less than three big screens.
The whole design was conceived by American Shizuoka City resident, Derrek Buston, who has actually just opened his own bar/brewery, West Coast Brewery, in Mochimune, and some of his brews will be served on the tap at “12” from June!

It is located just next to the side entrance torii/sacred gate of Ogushi Shrine. You can surmise that all drinkers are automatically blessed! LOL

The food there, notwithstanding their common household names, is definitely of a better variety for all tastes!
My favorite is the fish and chips (Brirish food for you, but better than in Great Britain!)!

Made with fresh cod and fried on order!

Served with spicy French fries (they are Belgian!) fried on order and homemade coleslaw!

And authentic red wine vinegar!

For the moment all craft beers on the tap or in cans afrom mainly Seattle and its surroundings but sometimes from other places such as Wyoming!
There ar nine craft beers served on the tap and regularly changed. And fully described on the menu!
I actually have a liking for their canned beers and ciders as there are so many to explore!

Incidentally, vegetarians and vegans shouldn’t need  worry as they have a beautiful organic salad on the menu for you!

To be continued, of course!

American Gastronomy: Hamburg Steak at Tequila’s Diner in Shizuoka City!

TEQUILA-HAMBURGER-2

Service: Shy but very friendly
Equipment & Facilities: Good general cleanliness. Excellent washroom
Prices: Reasonable to slightly expensive but very good value
Strong points: Tex-Mex gastronomy of superior quality. Doubles up as bar in evenings.

TEQUILA-HAMBURGER-5

The other day I paid a long due visit to what I consider the best Hamburger Restaurant in Shizuoka Prefecture, namely Tequila’s Diner in Shizuoka City!

TEQUILA-HAMBURGER-3

It being a busy Saturday lunch I had plenty of time to search and choose a morsel I hadn’t sampled yet!
I finally opted for the “Hamburg Steak”, which is also called a Louie Steak in the US although its varieties are endless.
Actually in Japan a “Hamburg” is an open hamburger while “Hamburger” means it will be served sandwiched inside a bun.
I ordered with blue cheese sauce topping!

TEQUILA-HAMBURGER-4

Being hungry I also ordered a side dish of garlic rice!

TEQUILA-HAMBURGER-6

My order!

TEQUILA-HAMBURGER-7

Plenty of garlic rice. Very well-balanced, actually and lighter than expected!

TEQUILA-HAMBURGER-8

Coleslaw!

TEQUILA-HAMBURGER-9

The Hamburg Steak with blue cheese sauce topping, beansprouts seasoned with the hamburg steak juices and fried potatoes (Belgian!)!

TEQUILA-HAMBURGER-10

This Hamburg Steak is made with no less than 4 types of beef!

TEQUILA-HAMBURGER-11

It is moreover hand knife-chopped, not one of those mushy “patties” served in some notorious diners!
Cooked semi rare, great bite and real beef taste!
Will come again for it with a different topping and side dish next time!

Tequila’s Diner in Shichiken Cho (near Aoba Park Street) has become a real institution when it comes to American gastronomy, hamburgers in particular.
The latter are always 100% beef, generally American.
The food might sound a bit pricey at first, but the generous portions, the fully garnished dishes and the health of all makes more for an extremely good value.
Moreover the patties are always made with knife-chopped meat giving a real bite to a whole hamburger you enjoy at easy pace!

SN3O0525
SN3O0525

I had ordered something different when I belatedly noticed the summer limited treat on the blackboard overhead at the counter (lucky me as I wouldn’t have noticed since I usually sit in the small “lodge” outside!): lamb and blue cheese hamburger!
I just had the time to notify Chef Chihiro Okamato who took it easily in his stride!

SN3O0529

The lamb and blue cheese hamburger both available at lunch and dinner!
Note the big fresh green salad!
The bun is baked by a local baker!

If you don’t want too much salt on your potato chips tell the staff beforehand! Actually a kids’ set is available with reduced salt on the potatoes!

The New Zealand lamb patty with the blue cheese and more vegetables for a great balance!

SN3O0532

Knife-chopped meat patty.
This has nothing to do with soft meat you gulp down at cheap diners.
You need a knife to cut it if you do not eat it with your hands!
I like my meat with a real bite or else!

Incidentally Tequila’s Diner is not all hamburgers, far from it!
Check their ONLINE MENU!
No wonder you can expect more articles!

American Gastronomy: “Lobster & Tile Fish Nage” at BLUE BOOKS CAFE in Shizuoka City!

Strong points: Very generous cafe/bistro multi-genred gastronomy. Great variety. Great products. Very modern atmosphere. Great books!

Yesterday was a cold and I suddenly craved for a hot lunch!
My feet seemed to naturally carry me to BLUE BOOKS CAFE in Miyuki Cho, Aoi Ku, Shziuoka City!
It took me some time before making up my mind!

SN3O0310

I finally opted for the “Lobster (“Homard” in Japanese) and Tile fish (“Amadai” in japanese) Nage (French for “Swim”/light sauce/broth) with seasonal vegetables!

SN3O0312

The lunch set includes unlimited home-baked bread!

Dessert is not included (good for me who is carefully monitoring y weight!) but coffee or tea can be added for 100 more yen! Very good value indeed considering it costs less 14 US $ or less than 11 Euros

SN3O0313

The lunch set!
Now, what did I have?

SN3O0314

I limited myself to two pieces of bread although my eyes wanted more! (you can ask for more during the meal!)

SN3O0315

A big enough green salad and black tea!

SN3O0316

The main dish!

SN3O0317

I admit it is a small lobster and only half of one, but it is still good value!

SN3O0318

And tile fish does not come in Japan, either, although it is fortunately a local fish!
The lobster and the fish are mounted on a smooth and creamy potato mash which is delicious mixed with the sauce/broth!

SN3O0319

The local seasonal vegetables were absolutely superb: Broccoli, yellow cauliflower, “Petit Vert” Brussels sprouts (a variety created in Shizuoka Prefecture), snap green peas and turnip!

Great value once again, delicious and so healthy!
Who said that American cuisine is heavy? LOL

SN3O0108

Fancy having a full lunch in Shizuoka City, I mean a healthy and tasty one for only 1,000 yen (+ 80 yen consumption tax), that is less than 9 US $ at the present rate?
It is a full lunch with drink included.
Well, on that day I was craving for greens so I Chose the 5 starters salad and Manhattan Clam Chowder lunch at BLUE BOOKS Cafe in Miyuki Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O0111

Americans rejoice, they serve home-made bread, including corn bread, and you can ask for “refills” as they explain in their quaint English menu!

SN3O0110

Great hot Manhattan Clam Chowder!

SN3O0109

You can start right away if your hungry or cold!

SN3O0112

The full set with coffee thrown in!

SN3O0113

Vegetables are super fresh and local!
But you will have to wait for a little while as every dish is composed on order!

SN3O0114

The violet sweet potato chips are home-made!

SN3O0115

As for the “5 items”, they include such delicacies as small slices of terrines, fish croquette, cooked meat which change regularly!

SN3O0116

Don’t be fooled by the “small size”. You will be full at the end of this lunch!

SN3O0310

Due to a hectic schedule and an ever expanding waistline I haven’t been able to visit BLUE BOOKS Cafe in Miyuki Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City for quite a while.
But there is a limit to anybody’s patience.
The other day I needed a dessert to help me calm down although I’m no a big sweets eater.
The BBC Apple Pie on the menu was just too tempting!

SN3O0312

Really appetizing, even for the Frenchman I am!

SN3O0313

Looking at it from the side, one wonders what the recipe includes!

SN3O0314

Combined with the vanilla ice cram and cream it does make for an elegant if simple dessert!

SN3O0315

Know that it does not only contain Kogyoku apple/紅玉林檎 (a succulent Japanese apple variety), but also pear, raisins and walnuts!
Not only very tasty but also healthy!

SN3O0177

Notwithstanding the quaint English translation I found an interesting concept in BLUE BOOKS cafe’s lunch menu the other day:
White-fleshed fish deep-fried in kadaif! Kaidaf is also called “Angel’s hair” and is made of fine strings of translucent pasta originating from the Middle East you can easily find in Japan these days.

SN3O0178

My lunch set of the day!
Now, what did we have here?

SN3O0182

A view of the three main ingredients!

SN3O0183

Plenty of tomato and other vegetables (Shizuoka-grown) for great balance!

SN3O0184

Great spinach fettucine cooked al dente!

SN3O0179

Ammerican comfort food: corn bread!

SN3O0180

As usual fine green salad for even better balance!

SN3O0181

And plenty of tea to wash it all down!

To be continued,… You bet!

BLUE BOOKS cafe is a great place for hamburgers, hot sandwiches, salads and books, but it is also a cafe which tries to introduce new drinks on their menu on a constant basis!
Certainly appreciable in cold winter!

SN3O5472

The best time to enjoy such drinks in middle afternoon or early evening when the place is not as crowded as usual!

SN3O5476

Time to relax!

SN3O5471

They have two new drinks on the menu these days.
The first one is N.Y. Chocolate!

SN3O5473

Intriguing and appetizing!

SN3O5474

It is a very thick hot chocolate drink topped with a marshmallow and cocoa powder!
You need a spoon to scoop it all. I mean the chocolate drink at the bottom of the cup!

SN3O5475

Of course you need the spoon to either eat the marshmallow or mix it in!

SN3O5652

The second drink is called “Two Tone”

SN3O5653

It is actually a latte with thick chocolate and expresso coffee mixed in for a double sensation!

SN3O5654

Soft whipped milk on top!

SN3O5655

Really appetizing from above!
