French Cake: “Grand Marnier” by Ludovic Le Teigner at Patisserie Le Teigner in Shizuoka City!

It has indeed taken little time for Ludovic le Teigner, a native of Bretagne, France, since he opened Patiseerie Le Teigner in Shizuoka City in April last year to establish himself as the best Chef Patissier in our town of almost 800,000 souls!

SN3O0566
SN3O0566

This is the of probably a very long series of tastings of his extravagant creations all in finesse and exquisite details!
This particular cake was actually recommended to me by Ludovic when I visited him at a special event in Isetan Department Store in Shizuoka City: “Grand Marnier”!
Grand Marnier is the famed French orange liqueur used in the making of this cake conceived around chocolate and oranges.

SN3O0564
SN3O0564

It is mainly composed of two layers, the bottom one a chocolate biscuit covered with bits of candied orange and the top layer a chocolate mousse, both beautifully accentuated with Grand Marnier orange liqueur.

SN3O0565
SN3O0565

The whole is covered with a fine chocolate ganache and decorated with a stick of candied orange and thin square of chocolate.
Cut through its soft texture with a fork and discover the marriage of at least four savors!
Delicious, both sober in approach and extravagant in taste and ingredients!
To appreciate with a cup of superior quality tea or coffee!

The other day I had the occasion to pay my first visit to a cafe opened about two years ago in Shimada City, a city fast developing into a gastronomic venue: din/g.place!

SN3O0568
SN3O0568

The place is only opened only in daytime until 18:00 unless you reserve for a party of more than 5 guests past this time. Not only it is spotless clean in a new passage building, it is also completely non-smoking!
The setting inside the large cafe allows you to choose a table to your liking.

SN3O0567
SN3O0567

Even for a cafe the menu is really extensive.
For lunch they propose no less than four different sets, not only scrumptious but very reasonable.
The week end brunches are very popular and the desserts offer a good possibility of combinations!

SN3O0566

I recommend a table by the window opening onto an interior terrace!

Cafe & Bar: Hug Coffee Espresso Roasters in Shizuoka City!

Service: easy-going and smiling
Equipment & facilities: All a bit narrow but very clean. Excellent washroom shared on 2nd floor of same Sunrose building. Non–smoking
Prices: reasonable~ a little expensive
Strong points: 34 coffees and teas, craft beers, light food and bagels

SN3O0003

Hug Coffee Company in Shizuoka City has three cafes/shops/bars in town, all different in style and concept.
They are increasingly becoming popular with all genders and ages for their convenience.
My favorite is the one called Hug Coffee Espresso Rosters (also called “sangouten”, meaning “3rd shop”!) between Cenova Department Store 109 Building for many reasons.

SN3O0010

It reminds me of my psychedelic years and the staff is cool and sometimes outright zany.
Actually the Lady In Charge, Miyako Suzuki/鈴木京さん is a god friend of mine.
First of all smokers are kindly asked to pry their trade far away for the shop!

SN3O0002

All drinks are made on site to satisfy all cravings!

SN3O0009

But the main attraction is their beers including no less than 9 brews by Baird Beer, the most famous craft beer Company in Shizuoka prefecture!

SN3O0007

They even serve a very limited (hurry, as it is only seasonal, although they plan to serve it every year!) Morning Coffee Stout made in collaboration with Bryan Baird and their own coffee!
Tasting report coming soon!

HUGS-BAIRD-3

Bryan Baird’s recent visit to Hugs Coffee Espresso Roasters!

You will surely understand why you can expect many craft beer tasting reports in the near future!

Patisserie & Salon de The HANAI in Shizuoka City!

Service: Extremely friendly and attentive

Prices: Reasonable~slightly expensive (reasonable considering the quality!)
Strong points: Superb array of cakes and biscuits aimed at an adult clientele. Excellent lunch sets. Wine & beer available. Can be enjoyed as a cafe, restaurant and wine bar.

SN3O0677

Chef Takuya Hanai/花井拓也さん last year in October finally moved to the present location, not far from where his previous shop called “Taky’s” was standing. His clientele just had to move a bit further.
The difference between Taky’s and HANAI is the available pace!

SN3O0678

Instead of a single floor, HANAI stands on two floors with the Patisserie downstairs and the Salon de The/Cafe Restaurant upstairs!

SN3O0679

If you want your cakes with a drink upstairs instruct Takuya’s sous-chef, Mr. Sano, and it will be taken up!
The cakes are essentially seasonal with some regular classics. Cakes can be prepared on order for private parties and the like!

Cafe Gallery Hiyori 日和 in Shimada City, Kawane Cho!

Service: kind, elegant and attentive
Equipment & facilities: Spotless clean overall. Superb separate gender washroom. Entirely non-smoking. Garden, private room, gallery and parking
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: great coffee, light meals and drinks in a superb setting. Can be rented for private parties and events.

SN3O0444

Yesterday, thanks to my good friend Osamu Kurosawa who lives in Ieyama, Kawane Cho, Shimada City, I discovered a real jewel of a Cafe Gallery named Hiyori, lost in the middle of the nature in Mijiro, Kawane Cho, Shimada City!

SN3O0445

Kazuko Sawada/澤田和子さん had this superb building created away from the city last year to provide a haven in the middle of nature with the dual purpose of a Cafe and a Gallery!

SN3O0446

The architectural style is resolutely modern and artistic!

SN3O0461

But in the winter the cafe is heated with a wood oven!

SN3O0447

The place is open only on Saturdays, Sundays and National Holidays from 11:00 to 17:00 but can be opened at later hours or other days on requests for private parties or events!

SN3O0460

One of the reasons Kazuko established this Cafe & Gallery is that her own sister has a soba restaurant in the neighborhood!
She serves homemade lunches, snacks and cakes and very good quality coffee and tea!

SN3O0448

The place, being a gallery, is full of exquisite art work!

SN3O0449

The whole place inside is entirely non-smoking although one can smoke outside in the vast garden!

SN3O0450

One can sit at tables or at the counter in the main room…

SN3O0452

… or retire to a Japanese-style room with view on the garden!

SN3O0455

All elegance and tradition!

SN3O0453

Have a good look at the garden as you might be tempted to sit under the eaves!

SN3O0454

But if you come with friends you might be tempted to sit at the counter to share a pleasant conversation with Kazuko, too!

SN3O0457

For guests who wish for a more substantial drink, shochu and wine are available (sake will come soon, I hope)!

SN3O0458

Be aware this is great tea country, too!

SN3O0459

And coffee is truly delicious!

This was my first and too short a visit, so expect more reports soon!

Service: Very kind and deferential. Sophisticated
Equipment & Facilities: Overall spotless clean. Superb washroom. Parking. Entirely non-smoking!
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Classic French cakes! Morning and lunch sets!

When Shunsuke Kasai/笠井俊介さん retired and sold his cafe patisserie called “Bouquet” at the time near Cenova Department Store in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, a lot of people felt the loss.
But Ms Toshiko Aoshima/青島登志子さん convinced to join her in a new collaboration venture in Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City to open a cafe patisserie in her own home under the new name of Sud Bouquet some 18 months ago!

SN3O0333

Very welcoming design!

The small “garden” includes lemon and kumquat trees!

b Cafe in Shimada City!

Service: Very friendly and communicative
Equipment & Facilities: Overall extremely clean. Beautiful Washroom. Entrely non-smoking!
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Home–made cakes, fruit juice and coffee! Take-out welcome!

SN3O0118

Yesterday chance served me well as I had arrived early in Shimada City and took some time to look around north of the station at ease just in case I made a discovery.

SN3O0119

That is when I discovered this place bearing two different names, b Cafe and Chubby-Boo!

SN3O0120

It is only after having sat down at the counter inside that I discovered that many locals come to buy their coffee and take out cakes at this counter inside! Very good idea!

SN3O0122

The reason it is also called is because the shop used to house Chubby-Boo looked after Ayano Asaoka’s mother until her daughter joined hands with her in March when they had the whole redesigned to include a small cafe!

SN3O0128

The kitchen is big enough for Beer b Nights 2 or 3 times a month when Ayano also serves light food including ratatouille and gratin to be enjoyed with the beer!

SN3O0123

The menu is pretty extensive for such a small place including no less than 14 coffees, teas and soft drinks with cakes made on site!
If you order a cake the drink coming with it will be 100 yen cheaper!

SN3O0124

I ordered for my first visit a home-baked cheese cake and straight coffee!

SN3O0125

The home-baked cheese cake!

SN3O0126

Really delicious and so appetizing!

SN3O0127

Great coffee!

As this is obviously only my first visit expect more reports as I do have to taste the other cakes and participate to the next Beer B Night!

French Cake: Shizuoka Tropical Fruit Tart at Patina in Shizuoka City!

SN3O3345

Service: Very friendly and smiling
Facilities: Very clean. Beautiful washroom.
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: A true cafe where to relax and enjoy a good light meal any time of the day. Interesting reasonable wine and cider list.

Shizuoka has the mildest climate in Japan after Okinawa which allows for the culture of all kinds of fruit either outdoors or in green houses.
Recently locally grown fruit are witnessing a big increase both in production and consumption.
It seems there is no limit to the varieties!

SN3O3344

Last time i went there for my regular coffee i noticed a new tart being offered at Patina in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O3343

Shizuoka Tropical Fruit tart with banana, papaya and star fruit!

SN3O3346

Chef Akiko Kondoh/近藤亜希子さん’s tarts look as delicious as ever!

SN3O3347

All these colors reminded me of our tropical French islands in the Caribbean or off east Africa, not mentioning those in the Pacific ocean!

SN3O3348

Can you see the fruit?
The tart is served lukewarm for a perfect balance with the ice-cream!

SN3O3349

Yes, I always reserve this part for the last bite! LOL

SN3O3350

Mind you Akiko’s vanilla and Calvados ice-cream is a good enough reason to visit the place!
