BBQ with local Chicken, Pork & Beef in Fujinomiya City! (under Mount Fuji!)

Yesterday was a lucky day!
I had the day entirely free but didn’t have a clue how to use iTt
Moreover the weather so good it felt like a balmy Spring day!
On a hunch I went to Shizuoka City JR Station to see where I could go.
I was looking at the station map when someone lightly tapped my shoulder.
I turned around to discover N., a very old chum of mine!
-What brings to Shizuoka Station? he asked me
-I wish I knew! And where are you going to yourself?
-Fujinomiya City! M. is having a small BBQ lunch party at his workplace and he just invited me?
-M.! (another old chum of mine!). I didn’t know he was holding a BBQ!
-Well, it was decided on a whim as he wants to celebrate his going back to New Zealand!
-Really? Could you call and see if he is ok with my joining!
……….
-He said, fine we are waiting for the both of you to join the fun!

Although it looks a bit far on a map, Fujinomiya City, especially Fujinomiya Station is not that far from Shizuoka City.
First you go to Fuji City and then change to a rain on the Minobu Line. Very simple.

Fujinomiya City is at the very foot of Mount Fuji, so people there have somewhat stopped noticing it!

A.’s workplace includes a small veranda where we can hold BBQ in the sun!

But we all spoke English!
And we all like our meet well cooked!

We had a bit of a long way back home as some trains didn’t reach Fujinomiya City because of the recent snow storm!

When we changed trains at Fuji, I noticed the snow on the roof of the train we had just left!

Looking forward to my next trip to Fujinomiya City!

Shizuoka Ekiben/Railway Station Bento: Hamamatsu Mikkabi Beef in Kakegawa JR Railway Station!

Mikabi in Hamamatsu City is not only famous all over Japan for its oranges but also for its beef!
Yesterday I had to stop in Kakegawa City and had a look at the ekiben/railway station bento they had on on offer when I discovered this new one among he more than half-dozen displayed.
I didn’t hesitate!

And also the three little guys with their drinks including Japanese sake!

Jishotei Bento Company in Hamamatsu City must be one of the oldest in Japan as it was founded in 1824!

Facilities & Equipment: Very clean overall. Excellent washroom
Prices: reasonable to slightly expensive (beef is not cheap in Japan!)
Strong points: Beef! Roast Beef! Wagyu Beef! Take out and online orders!

Don Ko An has now been in business in Aoi Ku along the Sengen Street< Shizuoka City for the last 15 years and as far as I know they are the only restaurant specializing in Roast Beef in the whole Prefecture!

it certainly has a good reputation in Shizuoka City and since I was visiting Sengen Street yesterday it was only normal I finally visited the place!

At night there is a Wagyu Roast Beef Dinner available!

I have wanted to visit Aloha Table since the Den Bldg was renovated at lunch but I had been discouraged by the long queues until I came a bit later yesterday and finally could find a seat!

The meat patty is very tender and really tasty. A good mark for the sauce, too! Breaking the egg yolk and mixing it with sauce is a pleasure!

I’ve initiated a series of postings to recommend lunches at restaurants in Shizuoka prefecture. The first two installments were dedicated to French and Italian Gastronomies. As the third one will concern “Western Gastronomy”, that is American, European and the like, BLUE BOOKS cafe will definitely qualify!
It had been a long time since I enjoyed a real sandwich for lunch and I couldn’t resist the home-made Smoked Salmon & Guacomole Sandwich!

As for other lunch sets it is served with fresh salad and a complimentary drink. I topped with a glass of British Strongbow Cider!

It is lighter than it looks. The bread is top-class and toasted to perfection!

As a general rule I do not look too much forward to eat and dine in hotels in Japan, but Al Porto Italian Restaurant is certainly the exception which confirms the rule!
Located on the 15th floor of Hotel Associa Shizuoka it is the only restaurant I would recommend to anyone inside a hotel.
And this all thanks to a great young chef named Satoshi Kakiyama, whom I know personally. But I didn’t give him any advance news of my visit for lunch the other day!

I had been curious for some time about a new restaurant which had been opened this year above a convenience store of all things this year when the far corner across Cenova Department Store in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, was reclaimed for development.

The name of the restaurant is “Sumpu No Nikudokoro/駿府の肉処”. Sunpu stands for the old name of Shizuoka City and Nikudokoro means “the place for Meat”!
Pity they don’t take the pains of at least writing the English pronunciation when you hear that Shizuoka Prefecture and City have recently declared to promote tourism more actively…

I had noticed this advert for a single donburi/bowl dish priced at 800 yen/8 US $/6 Euros for quite a while and I had thought that the place was maybe a very reasonable and simple restaurant subsidized by the Shizuoka Prefecture Government, the Agriculture Department in particular. I was proved slightly wrong!

Frankly speaking the lack of explanations and introductions on the ground floor was a bit frustrating and I was somewhat surprised to find out after climbing nondescript stairs to stand in front of small but elegant entrance!

Actually no less than 12 breeders have been awarded the distinction in our Prefecture!

Then I started to understand!
Wagyu is horribly expensive in Japan, wherever it is produced and moreover if it has received the label ‘Special Choice” by the Government!

The restaurant is owned and run by the Shizuoka JA (Japan Agriculture), the biggest Agricultural Association in Shizuoka Prefecture (and also heavily subsidized by the country!)!
Now, I knew why the prices were still comparatively reasonable, even for local products!

The establishment is absolutely spotless clean with a direct view into the kitchen! Talk about superior hygiene!

Not only the meat, but most of the sake and shochu are also brewed in Shizuoka Prefecture!

There are three types of seating: A counter by the window, very practical for individual guests of\r couples, benches and tables for 4 people apiece and a dig-in kotatsu Japanese room you can partly or completely reserve for a meal away from other guests’ sight (500 yen extra per person in the case). The Japanese room can be completely reserved for up to 8 guests. Otherwise parties up to 26 guests are accepted. Total reservation can be insured for up to 66 guests.

My first was for lunch at which you can a choice of single bowl dishes between 800 and 980 yen (very popular with office workers and doctors working nearby!), and three meat lunch sets between 1,200 yen and 3,000 yen. I chose the latter, which at 30 US $ is still very reasonable!

Japanese Gastronomy: Seared Beef-Gyuu tataki/牛たたき-Basic Recipe

BEEF-TATAKI-1

Many friends, including dear Sissi, changed their minds about beef after having tasted it in Japan.
The Japanese have not invented beef or the way to cook it. Let’s say that they have refined the art to the point of simple gastronomic elegance if such a description may be used.

Here is a simple recipe which will help you appreciate the beef and rejoice your friends.
Bear in mind that the beef can be chosen according to its amount of apparent fat.
Read until the end!

INGREDIENTS:

Good quality beef
Salt, pepper or spices of your choice
Sauce: Japanese-style “tare” or anything of your liking.

RECIPE:

BEEF-TATAKI-2

Choose a squarish/rectangular piece of beef. Momo/Rump is best. No need to spend thousands of whatever currency on imported wagyuu, blah blah, blah. Trust your favorite butcher!
Beef usually utilized for roast beef should be fine, too.
The point is to choose a shape that will be easy to slice in equal portions.

BEEF-TATAKI-3

Grilling the beef.
You may season it beforehand if you like it so. Pierce it with a brochette for better handling, although tongs would be best. Brush with just a little oil. Grill over flame on grill. The Japanese prefer to grill over straw if available instead of charcoal or gas. Cook it as long as you want, depending whether you like your beef rare or well-done or else.

Having cooked it on all sides, put it immediately inside the refrigerator. This is the trick!

Tare/Sauce.
This is up to you, from serving it with with BBQ sauce, soy sauce and what else.
Actually my preference is to grill the beef without any seasoning and serving it with grated wasabi, grated ginger, chopped scallions and rock salt!
Try sesame seed dressing/goma dare!
Try soy sauce mixed with grated garlic, grated ginger, ponzu, and sesame oil.
The beef slices will also taste great sandwiched between shiso/perilla leaves!

As for my own preference in beef I like it with as little fat as possible for the result as above!

Shizuoka Ekiben/Railway Station Bento: Shizuoka Charcoal-grilled Beef in Shizuoka JR Railway Station

Although I already sampled all the ekiben/railway lunch boxes on sale at Shizuoka JR Station I always keep an eye in case a new one or seasonal one appears.
I did well to do last Friday before taking the train to Kikugawa City as I discovered this new one put on sale beginning of September!

It is advertised as “Sumi Yaki Fuu Gyuuniku Bento”!
“Suni/炭” stands for “char coal”, “Yaki/焼き” for “grilled”, “Fuu/風” for “manner/way/method”, “Gyuuniku/牛肉” for “beef” and “Bento/弁当” for “lunch box/box lunch/boxed lunch”!

As usual Tokaiken Co. clearly sates the contents, price and consumption date limit as required by the law!

The food inside is efficiently protected by a rigid transparent cellophane lid.

Very simple, but elegant and tasty!
The charcoal-grilled beef slices with additional seasoning provided with golden sesame seeds.
The lettuce is very fresh!

You can enjoy the beef, lettuce and rice separately, but if you are clever with chopsticks pick the beef and lettuce together!
Very tasty but comparatively light.
For the pleasure of both genders!

Meat Gastronomy: My Best 10 dishes (and extras!) in Shizuoka in 2012!

My own creation: penne with Shizuoka wild boar simmered in red wine!

Shizuoka Prefecture is not only renown for its many vegetable and seafood varieties but also for its extravagant meat, be it beef, veal, lamb, chicken, wild boar or venison!
Pay a regular visit the many superlative restaurants that serve extravagant food at reasonable prices to make even gastronomes living in Europe and elsewhere envious!

Here is my own biased selection of the 10 top meat dishes I had the pleasure to savor in 2012 plus some extra to garnish the whole!

Teppanyaki/hot plate fried chicken breast from chicken bred by Aoki Farm in Fujinomiya City served at You-To Izakaya in Shizuoka City!

Gizzards, heart and liver on a poached egg of the same Amagi Shamo chicken bred at Horie Farm in Shuzenji, Izu Peninsula and served inside a Shizuoka-grown buckwheat galette and Shizuoka-grown wasabi leaves at Pissenlit French Restaurant in Shizuoka City!

The best of Japanese yakitori!
Chicken tsukune/long chicken patties made with ground chicken and crushed soft chicken cartilages served at Kushiyaki Taisho in Shizuoka City!

Oven roasted chicken from Aoki Farm and organically-grown vegetables by Bio Farm Matsuki both in Fujinomiya City and served at Le Comptoir de Bio-s French Restaurant in Shizuoka City!

Veal liver fried in mustard sauce and served with bamboo shoot and stuffed mini cabbage organically grown in Shizuoka City and served by Pissenlit French Restaurant in the same City!

Beef filet from animal bred in Minone Fram in Hamamatsu City and served with vegetables organically grown in Shizuoka Prefecture at Tetsuya Sugimoto French Restaurant in Shizuoka City!

Grilled Wagyu Beef Steak and mushrooms Gratin served at Beau Ciel French Restaurant in Shizuoka City!
No need for comments! Just extravagant and so reasonable at lunch!

Beef filet from cow bred at Okamura Farm and fried vegetables organically grown at Bio Farm Matsuki and served at French Restaurant de Bio-s, all in Fujinomiya City at the foot of Mount Fuji!

Pan-fried Home-made Boudin Blanc/French style white sausage served with French Le Puy lentils and local shiitake served at Caravin French Restaurant in Shizuoka City!
The only place so far where I could savor authentic French Boudin Blanc!

Pain de Foie Gras Matured with Mirin White Lees, Chouchou Farm Kankankan Musume Corn Vychissoise and soft pancake made with inca mezame potatoes served at at Pissenlit French Restaurant in Shizuoka City!
Mirin is sweet sake, and brewed in Fujieda City! A rare dish if there was one!

RYB Ton (pronounce “Louis Vuiton!) pork steak from animal bred in Fujinomiya City and Shizuoka-grown vegetables served by Osteria Porta Porta Italian Restaurant in Shizuoka City!
A pork that is served in top-class and expensive restaurants in Tokyo but so ridiculously reasonable here!

Cotes D’agneau/Lamb cutlets fried and oven-baked and served in demi-glace Madeira sauce and French ratatouille at Hana Hana French/Italian Restaurant in Shizuoka City! Once again so extravagant and reasonable!

A true Shizuoka French specialty!
Okabe wild boar and Shizuoka-bred pork Terrine as served at Chez Satsukawa French Restaurant in Shizuoka City!
I challenge any French visitor to visit us and savor it!

Yes, we have top-class traditional American gastronomy in Shizuoka City!
Oven-baked hamburger with egg, bacon in mustard sauce, lettuce, tomato and delicious fried potatoes at Tequila’s Diner Tex-Mex restaurant in Shizuoka City!

We even have French/Japanese style open hamburgers in Shizuoka City as served at Brochette French Restaurant with a beautiful mushroom sauce and mashed potatoes and corn!

Have I covered all the meat possible? LOL
