Along the Tokaido Nature Trail to Nihondaira Peak in Shizuoka Ciy!

Mount Fuji is best seen on a winter sunny days and there is an embarrassment of choices as to from what spot to admire it!
Nihondaira Peak inside Shizuoka City, that is in suruga Ku, is one of them.
And if you feel like having some much needed exercise one way to reach Nihondaira peak is to do it on foot!
If you are a fit person, whatever your age, it will take you only a couple of hours walk.
To avoid monotony just go back by bus but beware that the last one is at about 16:00.
Let me relate how I achieved it last week!

I first took a local train from Shizuoka JR Station and got off at Kusanagi Station.
You can also reach the same destination by riding the Shizutetsu Line from Shizuoka Cenova Department Store!
Get off at Kusanagai and walk till the main crossing ahead. Turn left and look for a big Torii/鳥居 gate which will be your starting point. The torii is that of a very interesting shrine, Kusanagi Shrine I described earlier.
Walk under the torii and proceed straight ahead!

Don’t forget to look at your feet sometimes and you will discover some interesting manhole covers!

This type is a pretty old fire hydrant access when Shimizu was still a separate city!

Go along he Kusanagijinja (Kusanagi Shrine) dori/path!

Don’t worry, there will be plenty of signs along the route to keep you on the right track!

First you will reach the Kusanagi Shinto Shrine!

Spare some of your time to visit it! It is worth it!

On your way out you will find an interesting manhole cover again!

Old Shimizu City type featuring Mount Fuji and Miho Beach with Matsubara Forest!

For collecting river and rain waters!

Check that you are on the right path!

Have a good look at the map!

It is bilingual!

It also gives you indications on the time needed!

Your first steps will take you through rural land!

Green tea fields and the last winter Chinese cabbage!

You are on the right path!

Peach tree field!

This is orange tree land!

Discovered this cute shed before the next bend!

it is only a private farm tool shed but the local primary school kids spent a great time decorating it!

A great idea to help the local kids’ sense of creation!

Don’t miss the next bend and walk up the passage way above the road!

A grand view is in wait for you at the top of the stairs before you penetrate the mountain forest!

Mount Fuji!

Shizuoka is also the land of green tea in japan!

A long flight of stairs will lead you to the nature trail going along the top of the mountains!

You never know, you may meet some elves there!

Plenty of ferns at the foot of tall cedar trees!

Follow the trail!

There are definitely sprites among hose trees! LOL

Out of the woods and almost at the top of Nihondaira peak!

I wished I had taken more pictures but I was really running low on batteries!
Moreover the air was a bit hazy. Next time I will take pictures earlier in the morning or before sunset (problem here as there will no more buses unless I visit the place on a busy week-end!)!

Sushi Mount Fuji at S-Pulse Dream Plaza in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

If you want to pay a visit to S-Pulse Dream Plaza in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City take free limousine bus from Shimizu JR Station right exit!
The place is worth visiting for many things,especially local gastronomy!

Shizuoka Prefecture and Shimiu Ku, Shizuoka City in particular is celebrated all over Japan for its seafood and sushi in particular!

just by the entrance of the sushi restaurant arcade you will discover this gastronomic and artistic of Mount Fuji which became a World Cultural Heritage last year!
It would become an interesting challenge to guess what sushi are represented there!
They are all models of real sushi assembled together as a quaint Mount Fuji!

Even the chefs’ aces are real sushi copies!

Yesterday was a lucky day!
I had the day entirely free but didn’t have a clue how to use iTt
Moreover the weather so good it felt like a balmy Spring day!
On a hunch I went to Shizuoka City JR Station to see where I could go.
I was looking at the station map when someone lightly tapped my shoulder.
I turned around to discover N., a very old chum of mine!
-What brings to Shizuoka Station? he asked me
-I wish I knew! And where are you going to yourself?
-Fujinomiya City! M. is having a small BBQ lunch party at his workplace and he just invited me?
-M.! (another old chum of mine!). I didn’t know he was holding a BBQ!
-Well, it was decided on a whim as he wants to celebrate his going back to New Zealand!
-Really? Could you call and see if he is ok with my joining!
……….
-He said, fine we are waiting for the both of you to join the fun!

Although it looks a bit far on a map, Fujinomiya City, especially Fujinomiya Station is not that far from Shizuoka City.
First you go to Fuji City and then change to a rain on the Minobu Line. Very simple.

Fujinomiya City is at the very foot of Mount Fuji, so people there have somewhat stopped noticing it!

Our friend A., the back of A., another chum, J., a new friend, and Dino, another old pal!

A.’s workplace includes a small veranda where we can hold BBQ in the sun!

The LP gas operated BBQ gear, all imported from New Zealand!

Can be used in 4 different ways!

Fujinomiya City is a major meat producing area and on that day all the chicken, pork and beef were local!

We had twoKiwis, one Ozzie, one Croatian, two Canucks, one Pom, two Yankees and a Frog on that day!
But we all spoke English!
And we all like our meet well cooked!

The beef was to be cooked later!

Just the minimum of greens on that day! LOL

M.’s is a great workplace where you can have a peek at Mount Fuji from all kinds of angles!

Time to grill the enormous beef steaks!

We had a bit of a long way back home as some trains didn’t reach Fujinomiya City because of the recent snow storm!

When we changed trains at Fuji, I noticed the snow on the roof of the train we had just left!

Looking forward to my next trip to Fujinomiya City!

Mount Fuji Winter Urban Sites in Shizuoka City!

Winter is probably the best time to take pictures of Mount Fuji as you can see it hundred of miles away!
In Shizuoka City it practically jumps out in front of you if you look to the east!

I was riding my bicycle along Route One in the east direction on my way to Gokoku Shrine when Mount Fuji looked at me in the distance!

Above the private Shizutetsu Railway Line!
Do you notice the train on theleft?

You could also see it driving a car but I very much doubt you could stop along the pavement like I did on my bicycle letting the traffic flow by!

Mount Fuji on Stamps 2: 1935~1962 (partial)

There is a very interesting way to know more about Mount Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture (and also Yamanashi Prefecture) by collecting or studying stamps which were issued on this subject inside Japan (there are of course more in the rest of the world)!

There are certainly more than one may think first as the Japanese Post Office printed regular not only commemorative stamps but also regular stamps well before WWII!

Here is an account spanning up to 2004 (2nd installment)
Past that year, I’m sure it will be a lot easier to investigate!

Scary Santa Claus and Garish Christmas Illuminations in Shizuoka City!

Christmas, or Santa Claus, are not a feast but big business in Japan or Shizuoka!
But it can turn the landscapes into dubious spectacles….

On my way to Shizuoka JR Station today I found myself confronted with an “illuminated” Asty Building which is part and parcel of the Railway Station!

Mind you, some do like such illuminations…

What’s that red thing over there?

Somebody told me Santa Claus was using a snowmobile these days…

One day I will have to write up a compilation or a full post about advertisements on Buses in Shizuoka!

I caught this one this evening in front of Shizuoka JR Station but had only the time to take a single picture!

In this case the Prefecture/City is only advertising for the benefit of Shizuoka Tourism!

Mount Fuji: Urban Sights from Shimizu JR Station!

Mount Fuji is an ever-changing sight and can be caught in most interesting situations if you one corner of your eye at the horizon especially in the Fall and Winter!

Just coming out of Western Exit of the Shimizu JR Station on the Tokaido Railway Line I noticed Mount Fuji far away in distance through a fence!

On my way I noticed a marked change of color!

Just before my train back to Shizuoka I even managed a somewhat psychedelic picture of Mount Fuji from upstairs!

Mount Fuji: Urban Sights from Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City!

Now is the season when you can see Mount Fuji clearly from Shizuoka City even from spots that are not evident for most of the year!

I had cycled a long way down Suruga Ku, the Southern half of Shizuoka City when I reached some paddy fields just beyond the last buildings before a long break in the landscape becoming more rural in spite of the recent building boom!

Mount Fuji has received a lot of snow of late and it helps for a great contrast in the distance.
Actually you have to travel a lot before the buildings stop hiding it from everyone’s view!

mount has a knack to turn out in some interesting places!
I caught it from Platform 1 (you can’t from the others!) at Okitsu Station in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

Mount Fuji World Heritage on Izu Hakone Railway Line Train!

For the railway and train buffs!

The other day as I was going to board my train to Izu Nagaoka on the local private Izu Hakone railway Line in Mishima Station I noticed a new sign at the front:
“富士山文化遺産登録”: “Mount Fuji World Cutrl Heritage Registration”!

The last stop of this particular line is “修善寺”/”Shuzenji”.
Apart of the evident attraction to railway buffs I definitely recommend you ride this line which will show you so much of Izu Peninsula!

Mount Fuji Photographs from Heda in Izu Peninsula (Autumn/Fall)

With fall/Autumn coming soon we shall be able to admire Mount Fuji from a long distance again as the skies will gradually clear up.
There are many spots where you can enjoy great views of the most famous mountain in Japan, but I have a special weakness for one very precise spot!

Heda, now merged with Numazu City, is a harbor tucked away inside an almost closed cove, the epitome of what Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture has best to offer to any tourist, be he/she Japanese or from more distant shores!
-A resort off the beaten tracks.
-A spa renowned for its thermal hot springs.
-A major fishing harbor part of Numazu City, one of the main providers of seafood to Tokyo.
-Arguably one of the best spots to admire Mount Fuji in the whole of Japan!
-A gastronomic venture with its deep-sea fish and marine life including the largest crab in the world, Takaashigani/高足蟹/Japanese Spider Crab!
-History: It was visited in 1854 by the Russian frigate Diana of the Imperial Russian Navy, the flagship of the Russian explorer Yevfimy Putyatin when it was damaged in a tsunami, following the powerful Ansei-Tōkai earthquake of 23 December 1854. The Diana sank while sailing from Shimoda to Heda for repairs!

First of all, Heda is a paradise for photographers, amateur and professional alike, who can take innumerable shots of Mount Fuji from various view spots all year round as the sacred mountain is changing its robes daily!
In Autumn, one may sight Mount Fuji as a dark and mysterious figure shrouded in mists looming beyond the sea.

Sometimes it does look as surging out blue expanses!

At dusk it will be blurred out of the sky by magnificent sunsets irreverently crossed by returning squid fishing boats!

The 2nd Mt. Fuji Network Forum was being held at Grandship on the 2nd and 3rd of March 2012 for an international seminar on children with congenital heart diseases.
As Ms. Keiko Kubota, Chef at Restaurant Gentil, had devised a bento for the participants using exclusively products of Shizuoka Prefecture I deemed it of great interest!
