French Gastronomy: Early Christmas Dinner at Pissenlit in Shizuoka City!

Service: Excellent and very friendly.
Facilities: Great cleanliness overall. Superb washroom (mouthwash and toothpicks provided!)!
Prices: Reasonable to slightly expensive, very good value.
Strong points: Interesting wine list. Great use of local products, especially organic vegetables and Shizuoka-bred meat and caught fish. Very inventive French gastronomy.

In Japan it is always a good idea to have Christmas Dinner before Christmas as the restaurants are full to the brim and menus are generally fixed.
Therefore we decided to have ours earlier at our own convenience in our favorite French restaurant in Shizuoka City: Pissenlit!

SN3O0206

It allowed me also to have a peek at Chef Toru Arima/有馬亨さん’s lair!

SN3O0205

The concept in Pissenlit is very practical as you first choose a budget and then order from the carte du jour depending on the deal allowing you a varying number of possibilities!

What did we have, then?

SN3O0207

My own first appetizer!

SN3O0209

Semi-marinated mackerel!

SN3O0210

Dragon’s appetizer!

SN3O0211

Semi-marinated oysters!

SN3O0212

Our second appetizer!

SN3O0213

Marbled Duck Foie Gras Terrine!

SN3O0214

A simple but exquisite consomme before the next dish! A small detail that makes the difference!

SN3O0215

Our vegetable dish!

SN3O0216

Except for the truffles all the vegetables are organic and grown in Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0217

From another angle!

SN3O0218

Our fish and seafood dish!

SN3O0219

Seabream, clam and horse mackerel!

SN3O0220

The vegetable on top is a new vegetable grown in Shizuoka City!
Can you guess its name?

SN3O0221

“Cauliflore”! A mixture of broccoli stem and yellow cauliflower!

SN3O0222

My meat dish!

SN3O0223

“Ezo shika”, venison from Hokkaido Island!

SN3O0225

From another angle!

SN3O0226

Dragon’s meat dish!

SN3O0227

Wild duck/game/gibier from Fujinomiya City!

SN3O0228

What with the organic vegetables, a truly natural dish!

SN3O0229

From another angle!

SN3O0235

A small but exquisite cheese plate for me!

SN3O0230

Now, what is Chef Toru Arima/有馬亨さん preparing next?

SN3O0231

Dragon’s grand dessert!

SN3O0233

Tiramisu, semi-dried “anpokaki persimmon”, Chocolat ice cream and chocolate cake crumbs!

SN3O0236

And coffee, served as it should be!

Yes, we had wine, and plenty of it!

Scary Santa Claus and Garish Christmas Illuminations in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5416

Christmas, or Santa Claus, are not a feast but big business in Japan or Shizuoka!
But it can turn the landscapes into dubious spectacles….

SN3O5413

On my way to Shizuoka JR Station today I found myself confronted with an “illuminated” Asty Building which is part and parcel of the Railway Station!

SN3O5418

Mind you, some do like such illuminations…

SN3O5414

What’s that red thing over there?

SN3O5417

Somebody told me Santa Claus was using a snowmobile these days…

SN3O5415

Look above….

SN3O5416

Oh well….
