West Coast Brewing Beer Bar “12” in Shizuoka City!

From outside!

From the standing bar!

Service: very friendly and informative,. English and Spanish speaking staff on hand.
Equipment & Facilities: Spotless clean. Superb gender separated washrooms. Completely non-smoking.
Prices: reasonable to slightly expensive (Craft beers are never cheap! LOL)
Strong points: Own craft beers, regular and limited editions. Collaboration beers from time to time. Great craft beer explanations on hand! Beer bar food well above average.

“12”, the leading West Coast Brewing (Mochimune, Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City) bar was moved to a new address on March 12th, 2020, to accommodate more faithful customers in a more spacious multi purpose locale almost next door to the smaller original bar behind Ogushi Shrine, not far from Shuzoka JR station in Koyamachi!

Friends of mine sitting at one of the live evenings space tables!

The present concept is vastly different and the accent is on space and comfort for all tastes!
There is a very long counter for those who prefer to stand and move according to the presence of friends!
There are tables of different sizes with comfortable sitting for more sedentary customers.

Plenty of sitting space in front of large bay windows which be left open in the better season!

A very long standing bar by Shizuoka City Standards!

And a luxury in Shizuoka City: an open air veranda!
You can be sure that for all my love of standing bars I will grab a seat there in the hotter season!

Big screens advertising beers on the taps!

For the canned beer lovers there is plenty to choose among beers and ciders from Seattle!

Do not worry, for the non beer drinking customers/friends there plenty indicated on a very practical menu book!

The craft beer part makes for great reading!
below is a sample of the craft beers i have recently tasted!

Star Watcher IPA!

White Wizard!

White Wizard explained!

Not Enough Bass!

Not Enough Bass explained!

Don’t worry, when I have more time I will come up with tasting article1

Now, when it comes to food, it is definitely well above average!
make sure to read the bilingual menu!

A favorite of mine: Fish and Chips with real fresh cod!

Between you and me, better than in Great Britain!

And from April top-class hamburger!
But this is for the next article!

Until then Cheers/Sante/Salute/Kampai!

American Bar Restaurant: Lunch at Paradiso in Minato Yokocho, Mochimune, Shizuoka Ciy!

Minato Yokocho front!

Service: kind and attentive if a bit shy (at first!)
Equipment & facilities: overall very clean. Shared but very clean and complete washroom.
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: Great open hamburgers (“hambaagu” in Japanese!). Craft beers (although they tend to disappear quickly!)

Picture of the old Minato Yokocho!

Some time ago, CSA Real estate Co., actually based in Mochimune, among other projects took on to renew completely the old derelict Minato/harbor Yokocho/Alley to invite existing and new tenants to provide a much needed food and drinks site to the ever increasing number of tourists. Moreover, since bathers are rarer and rarer on the beach most shacks and bars have disappeared from the sea front it has become a natural spot to patronize as it caters for so many tastes and priorities!
I have already visited and written about a few places and will continue for some time!

This time I visited Paradiso!

Take your time and have a good look at the menu boards outside since it includes good pictures!
Lunch sets are a good bet and very reasonable!

Very simple but very clean settings including seats at tables and counter bar!

Craft beers on offer but they tend to change and disappear quickly! LOL
Night owls will find it very practical, too!

It was our first visit and that at lunch so we opted for almost the same set lunch!
Above is the Missus’ order: Wagyu (yes, you read it!) hambaaguu (Japanese style open hamburger)!
Ridiculously reasonable price at 1080 yen!

My own version!

But with two deep-fried prawns! For 1380 yen!

But don’t overlook the Kuroge/black hair wagyu gyusuji/tendon curry, the tako/octopus rice and fried food set lunch including prawns, oysters and fish! All accompanied with a small salad!

Can you guess what I will have next time? LOL

Hawaiian Bar Restaurant: Lunch at Sea Zoo in Minato Yokocho, Mochimune, Shizuoka Ciy!

Minato Yokocho front!

Service: kind and attentive if a bit shy (at first!)
Equipment & facilities: overall very clean. Shared but very clean and complete washroom.
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: Hawaiian gastronomy, international gastronomy, craft beers.

I have already visited and written about a few places and will continue for some time!

This time I visited Sea Zoo!

I classified it as a Hawaiian bar restaurant, but I could have followed their own title of “Healthy Dining and Bar”!
And thanks to the new concept it is open all year round!

When open it has all kinds of board menu outside to peruse before entering!

Not only food for lunch and dinner but drinks of all kinds all day long!

Although it is also open in winter it definitely has a summer flavor about it!

And do not forget this also a bar! LOL

Definitely the place for craft beer lovers although all kinds of drinks are on offer!

Even at lunch I would not pass the opportunity to enjoy a tasty craft beer!

A la carte food changing all the time!

But the lunch sets are not only well above average but also so reasonably priced!

Set lunches are served with a “mini salad” which has not nothing “mini” about it!

Italian organic pasta in Peperocino style with sardine whiting/shirasu from Mochimune!

Healthy (no oil or water used!) coconuts chicken curry!

No risk of getting fat here, that is if you do not abuse the booze! LOL
But definitely a good bet anytime you visit Mochimune1

Beef carpaccio!

i don’t have to introduce Soloio again, arguably the best Italian restaurant in Shizuoka Prefecture!
So, what did we have?
As above picture, beef carpaccio! the beef comes from Okamura arm in Fujinomiya City!

Japanese wild boar terrine and home pickled vegetables!

Mushroom salad with mushrooms cultivated by Hasegawa Farm in Fuji City!

Sole/flatfish fritters!

Octopus and potato salad!

Very, very unusual Cacao tagliatelle!

French Bistro Cuisine: Dinner at Ninosa in Shizuoka City!

Service: Kind and attentive. Very informative, too!
Equipment & facilities: overall very clean. Excellent washroom.
Prices: reasonable~slightly expensive
Strong points: Inventive and seasonal French bistro style cuisine. Great products. Short but excellent wine list.

Ninosa, in spite of their well earned reputation suffered from their somewhat distant location until they moved last year t the newly developed and highly popular part of Hitoyoda Cho near Komagata Street.
Which means it can be crowded at lunch time!

Dinners are a better bet although it might be a good idea to reserve, especially on week-ends!

The other day we finally managed to visit the place for the first time since it moved to its present address!
Dinner menus are basically a la carte although you may have a full course if you agree on it in advance!
Mind you, I do prefer to explore the menu board for a better choice!

Their wine list, although short is very solid with reasonably-priced to expensive offerings as well as wine by the glass!

Scrumptious seasonal quiche coming as a-toshi with the first drink!

If you are two of you I recommend the assorted starters as it will allow to taste no less than five different starters offered independently on the menu!

Very unusual white asparaguses served luciolla squids and wild mountain vegetables!

Splendid beef stewed in black beer! A must!

Top class creme brulee with home-made caramel ice cream!

And coffee served as it should be!

Looking forward to our next visit!

Italian Trattoria Lunch at Terra Costa in Shizuoka City!

Service: kind, smiling attentive
Equipment and facilities: very clean overall. Excellent separate gender wwashroom. Car park
Prices: very reasonable
Strong points:
fine Italian style trattoria. Excellent local products. Large portions.

I must admit it was a surprise to find this uncomplicated, modest and above average Italian trattoria along the sea shore in South Shizuoka away from the crowds and even surprised to find it crowded!
If you go there for lunch make a point to reserve your seats (actually you will be offered a plate of fried potatoes for the effort! good hospitality!)!

They do have a long enough menu but before you check the other menu know that the best deal is to choose a “set menu” as in above picture!
If you are two, three of more you will be able to choose all different dishes to share together!
The three of us opted for the 1,630 yen (tax included) menu with an original ice tea, a starters plate and a choice of pizza, pasta and risotto each! Plus a choice of desserts and coffee!
Very reasonable when you consider the size of the portions!

Incidentally there is also an enormous set lunch for two at 3,700 ye, tax included for two persons!

Let me show the menus for complete perusal!

The pizza menu!

The Pasta menu, part 1!

The pasta part 2 and risotto menu!

The sweets and cakes menu!

Now, what did we share?

The plate of starters/antipasti misto!
This was the main reason we ended up with full stomachs at the end! Well above average and excellent fresh produce!

Quatro formaggio/four cheese pizza!

Crab tomato sauce spaghetti!

Porcini mushrooms cream risotto!

Chocolate cake, tiramisu and creme brulee for dessert!
And coffee to wash it down.
Pity we were driving, otherwise a glass of wine would have been welcome! LOL

Ice Creams and Fruit Parfaits at La Palette in Mochimune, Shizuoka City!

Service: Kind, smiling and attentive
Equipment: Spotless clean. Excellent washroom
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: Fruit parfaits, ice creams and coffee! Terrace upstairs

For the past two years now Mochimune in Shizuoka City has literally been through a rebirth form its ashes of different era when people flocked to the beaches and seaside cafes and bars.
Now, very few people go to the beach but for hobby fishing and an occasional barbecue.
Mochimune had to reinvent itself. With the venue of a hot spring, some fine new bars and restaurants, a microbrewery and a whole complex of single floor hotels the city is completely changing and attracting an ever increasing flock of new tourists.

Count a 15~20 minutes walk from Mochimune JR Station, and although car parking is not difficult, some exercise will be welcome before you find the place along the street running parallel to the seafront!

Ice creams come into all kinds of favors but I particularly like their fruit parfaits!
Above is their classical double flavor ice cream balls topped with strawberries with black coffee!

Tiramisu style coffee ice cream, vanilla ice cream and nuts served with coffee!

By fine weather grab a seat on the second floor terrace to enjoy coffee, ice creams, or even wine and craft beer!

The last time we went there, that is on a sunny day near the end of the winter we enjoyed this beautiful seasonal fresh strawberries (cultivated in winter in Shizuoka) ice cream parfait!

For the sweet tooth away from the crowds!

Hand made soba/buckwheat noodles and sake at Te Uchi Soba Shizuoka with Masanao Chiba in Shizuoka City!

Masanao Chiba

Service: Shy at first but very friendly and informative.
Equipment and facilities: Small but overall very clean. Share washroom, oldfashioned but clean
Prices: reasonable~slightly expensive
Strong points:: hand-made/Te uchi soba only! Great sake. Izakaya cuisine.

Very appetizing o-toshi/appetizers accompanying first drink order!

Te Uchi Soba Shizuoka is located inside nationally renown Aoba Odenkai Alley in Aob Street, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City but it is one of the newly established izakaya that do not serve oden in this alley appearing regularly in magazines and TV programmes. Despite that Masanao Chiba is celebrated in the city and beyond for his hand made soba/buckwheat noodles, you will not easily find him in the media!

Tempura of the day!

Apart of the top class soba, Masanao serves all kinds of tidbits depending on the season and availability. But if it is your first visit make a point of ordering the tempura of the day!

Another of the great sake on offer!

If you like Japanese sake, this is the place as Masanao offers nectars from Shizuoka and all over Japan! As they regularly change just ask for his recommendations stating your preferences! It will make for the start of a good conversation!

The fish of the day: aji/horse mackerel tataki/japanese style fish tartare!

Check the short but solid menu. It will give you an opportunity to enjoy Japanese cuisine at its simplest and most easily enjoyable!

And do not forget the soba!

A great place to patronize on your own as “private lair”, or with a great company for a nice chat and drink away from it all!

Italian Gastronomy: 2019~2020 Winter Dinner at Soloio in Shizuoka City!

Service: Smiling, attentive and very informative.
Equipment and facilities: Spotless clean, superb washroom. Entirely non-smoking.
Prices: Reasonable~slightly expensive
Strong points: authentic Milanese cuisine. Excellent wine list. Superb products, be they loca,. Japanese or Italian! The best risotto in town!

There is little need to repeat why Soloio is simply and arguably the best Italian restaurant in Shizuoka Prefecture. There fore I will keep o describing the dishes we had the pleasure to savor during our latest visit!
Above is a carpaccio of very fine beef produced by Okanura Farm in Fujinomiya City!
Incidentally the appellation of carpaccio applies only to beef! how pedantic of me!

Salad of fresh mushrooms from Fuji City!

A constant favorite of mine: Shizuoka wild boar terrine!

Slightly extravagant when you consider the quality of the fish: sole/flatfish fritters!

So simple, but the “Dragon” (who is she?) just cannot visit Soloio without ordering it: potato and octopus salad!

Now, this is a first and absolutely elegant in spite of its name: home-made cocoa tagiatlle!

What we always come for: Piemonte Winter Truffles Risotto! Do I need to comment? LOL

And in spite of the Dragon’s protests I ended up with an affocado!

What’s next? Well, I won’t tell you until then! Lol again.

They do have a nice list of local sake in particular, and you must try the fish as this is a major fishing town in the whole of Japan!

French Bistro Cuisine Dinners (2) at LA VARIE in Shizuoka City!

SErvice: Shy but smiling and very attentive
Equipment and facilities Overall very clean. Excellent washroom
Prices: Reasonable~slightly expensive
Strong points: Traditional but inventive French Bistro cuisine with a twist. Very reasonably priced wine list

Veteran Chef Tshiharu Matsuura, after openingg such places as Villa d’Est Quisine, some time ago finally settled with his new venture, LA VARIE (pronouce “la varieh”) in the company of his wife. Located in a back street of Mizuochi Cho, not far from the Kitakaido Street about 30 minutes walk from Cenova Deaprtment Store, It stands in a very quiet laid back location but nonetheless came become very busy at lunch time. Evenings are comparatively quieter and more propitious to slow eating and drinking!

Talking of drinking a large selection of unusual bottles is available. But you can also order wine by the glass. As there are always 3 whites and 3 reds proposed on the menu, it is a god idea to start with a tasting set of them all, and later choose another glass if you are still thirsty!
Above is the white wine selection with names written on the paper napkin!

The same for the reds!

The menu featuring French bistro style and fusion bistro cuisine varies along the season and the products available, making visits different every time although some classics are constant!
The following pictures show what we had during two dinners in various companies!
Above is a French pate (should be called terrine, though!) de campagne!

Squid and octopus in tomato ajillos sauce and cheese gratin!

Raw seafood salad!

A Japanese bistro style karaage/deep-fired chicken and mixed herbs and spices powder garnish!

Mushroom spaghetti!

Meat pie and prawn crostini!

Another fresh seafood salad!

Squid and beans stew!

Marinated shrimps and vegetables salad!

Mushrooms and meat sauce pasta!

Pate de campagne and smoked ham plate!

Fresh fig crostini!

Roasted beef with fruit sauce and mashed potato!

Shiitake mushrooms crostini!

Don’t worry, desserts are also featured on the menu!

Vegan Cakes at LOCOMANI in Shizuoka City!

Service: Very friendly although a bit shy!
Equipment: Great overall cleanliness. Excellent washroom
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Inventive vegan menus. Healthy rice flour cakes.Mainly local products.

The other day I decided to visit my good friends at LOLCOMANI in Shizuoka City for coffee and cakes in the afternoon as lunches are always impossibly crowded, especially with ladies wishing for a healthy lunch offered by this reference vegan restaurant (I am no vegan, but I can appreciate from time to time, and it is always a pleasure to introduce it to my vegan friends!).
As for the cakes they tend to vary with the seasons and ingredients available, so make a point to check them beforehand.
If you cannot read the Japanese menu the owner’s wife will make it her pleasure to explain it in simple English!
As for the drink menu there is plenty to choose from the organic coffees and tea and the home-made vegan fruit drinks!

Chocolate cake!
All cakes are basically made with rice flour in case of some clients being wheat flour allergic!

For a better view with its soymilk cream and sweet nuts sauce!

Organic Coffee!
Actually LOCOMANI’s teas and coffees are well above average, although a bit weak for some, but well-balanced and tasty!

Half cakes set!
LOCMANI have a policy to have their clients taste as many of their cakes as possible. So instead of ordering a full serving of one cake, you can combine two half servings for better enjoyment!

Chiffon cake!

Fruit cake!

For vegans and others with a sweet tooth but mindful of their health!

Yakitori and Kushiyaki, and Shizuoka Sake at KASAI in Shizuoka City!

SErvice: shy but very friendly and always ready to explain everything!
Equipment and facilities: ery clean overall. Excellent washroom.
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points high standard traditional yakitori and kushiyaki with some superb surprises in stock! Superb sake list especially from Shizuoka Prefecture!

Kasai has long been an establishment of reference in our City of Shizuoka and deservedly so!
Not only they serve traditional yakitori and kushiyaki of high quality but at reasonable prices but they also pride themselves as serving mainly many local products, be they meat or vegetables, and especially a wide range of great Shizuoka sake!
The other day I had the occasion to visit the place in the company of two Canadian/Quebecqois clients who were very keen to sample local gastronomy after a visit of our wasabi and tea fields! They certainly were not disappointed and surprised the owner with their ferocious appetite!

We started by tasting our first sake from Shizuoka Prefecture right away; Isojiman Ginjyo from Yaizu City!
Note that the sakes were chosen by the owner-chef!

We started with this set: asparagus and bacon rolls and “circles” of shiso and pork!

Also Isojiman from Yaizu City but this time a Junmai Ginjyo!

More asparagus and bacon rolls and large prawns rolled in thin slices of pork!

This came as a “service”, thin slices of new celery with cream sauce and shaved cheese!

And it was time to taste our sake: Garyubai Junmai Ginjyo by Sanwa Brewery in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

The next dish might surprise newcomers to Japan! Extra beef brochettes/kushiyaki, again asparagus rolled in bacon and Shizuoka Wagyu Beef brochettes!
Shizuoka Prefectures has no less than 12 state-labeled wagyu farms! No need to go anywhere else in Japan!

Some dishes just have to tried twice or more! LOL

Geso/squid tentacles, large prawn rolled in thin slices of pork and extra beef!

Two more Shizuoka wagyu brochettes and a specialty of the house: tomato and pork rolls!

Our final Shizuoka Prefecture sake: Karakaze karakuchi junmai ginjyo by Hana no Mai Brewery in Hamakita Ku, Hamamatsu City!

And for the finish Kasai-style exploded chicken wings yakitori!

The nly problem is that I will have to write another blog to introduce all the dishes and sakes we had not tasted!

Sushi and Sashimi Lunch at Maguro Ichigo In Shimizu Fish Market, Shizuoka City!

Service: shy but very kind
Equipment and facilities: Overall very clean. Shared bathroom, old but clean.
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: first class fish and seafood at very reasonable prices. Super fresh. Serves both raw and cooked fish!

The locals know it well but tourists do not seem to know yet the value of visiting a local fish market to enjoy super fresh fish and seafood at very reasonable prices all in an authentic atmosphere away form mannerisms and snobbery downtown.
In Shizuoka City the Shimizu Fish Market is the place! Very easy to find: get off at Shimizu JR Railway Station turn right in the direction of the harbor and use the overhang passage. Turn left to cross the road and go gown at the end. The fish market is two minutes away on foot on your right!

This particular fish market is known all over Japan for its tuna as this the largest tuna unloading harbor in Japan!
I do have to visit the place regularly for business or otherwise and my favorite restaurant is Maguro Ichigo/まぐろ一期!
Take your time to check the dish and cuisine models exhibited outside! They also have a menu in English on request!
It is a great place to visit alone or with family as they also serve scrumptious cooked food for people and especially children who don’t like raw food! Incidentally they offer a set for children, too!

I chose a set consisting of a tuna/maguro sushi bowl topped with all kinds of tuna and a sakuraebi kakiage/cherry shrimps fritter/ a local specialty with miso soup and pickles!

The maguro sushi bowl was topped with slices of akami/lean tuna, chutoro/semi fat tuna and negitoro/scraped tuna with pickled ginger! As for the price, unbeatable!

The cherry shrimps fritter!

My friend had a different set including a small sashimi plate!

A rarity in Japan: Simmered tuna tail!

It is only a small sample of the food and dishes available!
Come as a group and taste as many dishes as possible!
