Shizuoka Izakaya: Dinner at Maru Ryou in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

The first starters!

Service: A bit shy but very kind and attentive
Equipment and Facilities: Overall very clean. Excellent washroom
Prices: reasonable
Strong Points: Authentic izakaya cuisine. Nice list of sake and shochu. Accent on local products, especially seasonal fish.

Superb set of local fish sashimi (part 1)!

Shimizu Ku (formerly Shimizu City before its merger with Shizuoka City) has of late been witnessing a revival of its old quarters, what with the new influx of tourists and the modernization of the access to its fishing harbor!
Get off at Shimizu JR Station, turn on the left, get down the stairs, walk on the left across a small street and continue until you find a long covered arcade on your left.
This has become the location for new izakayas, shops and bars!
You will find Maru Ryou/まる両 easily enough!

Superb set of local fish sashimi (part 2)!

I had the pleasure to discover the place thanks to a friend who happens to be a true local of this part of the city!
As we share a taste of good local food and drinks, I was sure to come to the right place!
They do have a nice list of local sake in particular, and you must try the fish as this is a major fishing town in the whole of Japan!

Fresh raw shirasu/sardine whiting, a local specialty!

As a true Japanese izakaya they will also offer all kinds of cooked various ways!
Deep-fried octopus!

Japanese chicken brochettes/yakitori!

Back to fish with another loala fish: aji tataki/horse mackerel tartare! unbeatable frshness!

A specialty of the place, a bit out the ordinary: Unagi tamago donburi/ eel and egg bowl!

And to beat the cold outside before going home: Ochazuke/rice tea soup!

Can’t to go there again, alone or in good company, whatever the time of the year!

Shizuoka Tourism: Shizuoka City Zagyo-So Museum Saionji Kinmochi Villa in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5115

Saionji Kinmochi/西園寺公望 (1849~1940) was a prominent diplomat for Japan especially in France who witnessed the passage of japan from feudalism to modern times.
He was born in October 1849 as the second son of Tokudaiji Kinito, the Minister of the Right. One of Japan’s modern elder statesmen, he live d a long life spanning the Meiji, Taisho and Showa periods as a liberal politician until the age of 91 when he passed away in November 1940.

Zagyo-So named by Viscount Chifuyu, was built facing the scenic Kiyomi lagoon in 1919 when Saionji was 70 years old as a place to lead a quiet life in his later years.

Times change and on March 18th, 1971, Zagyo-So was moved to Museum Meiji Mura located in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture. It is still shown today as a National Tangible Designated Cultural Asset.

Now a reproduction of Zagyo-So has been created on the land where it once stood thanks to the strong will of Okitsu (Shimizu Ku) people, the business world and the full cooperation and guidance from the Meiji Mura Foundation!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

Wall Paintings in Okitsu, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5151

I was walking back from Seikenji Temple (report coming!) to Okitsu JR Station when I felt the pangs of hunger.
As most restaurants were closed for lunch on that day in this neighborhood I decide to see what a local supermarket had to offer when I espied a wall painting in the distance!
I couldn’t investigate it as I don’t know when I will be able to come back to Okitsu!

SN3O5153

It had been painted quite a while ago but I suspect that the government is Shimizu Ku is behind it and probably had it done before they were merged into Shizuoka City!

SN3O5154

Just before the “Map” Mount Fuji and various fish had been painted.
I’ll show you later why Mount Fuji was so prominent!
As for the fish Shimizu is a major fishing harbor (it also has a major industrial harbor!)!

SN3O5156

I carefully checked and the fish represented there are really fish caught offshore!

SN3O5157

Right half of the picture:
Interestingly enough most of the fish are solitary!
Can you recognize them: True Seabream, File Fish, Puff Fish/Globe Fish, Scabbard Fish, Grouper, etc.

SN3O5158

Left half of the picture:
Here the fish are mostly in pairs!
Can you recognize them: Grey Seabream, True Seabream, Horse mackerel, etc.

SN3O5159

Crabs!
We do have quite a few in the Suruga Bay, and some very rare!

SN3O5155

The Map!

SN3O5160

The right half also featuring local products, such as citruses and tea!

SN3O5161

The Okitsu River is famous for its wild Ayu trouts!

SN3O5162

The right half with plenty of oranges!

SN3O5152

Can you see it?

SN3O5163

Mount Fuji beyond the supermarket!

Shizuoka Agricultural Products: Naitoh Fig Orchard in Okitsu

“With the present changes in climate my neighbors are joking that we might have to think of growing pineapples soon!” Mr. Yoshihiko Naitoh told me while driving me from Okitsu Station to his orchard up in the mountains.

I had called him te day before after my good friend Yasushi Imaizumi, a gastronome and real connoisseur, has introduced me to this great farmer.
He had gracefully agreed to pick me up as his farm is noteasy to find, but had warned me he had some work on the way.

Which suited me fine as it gave me the occasion to visit Okitsu JA Farmers Market where he delivered some of the morning’s crop.
Mr. Naitoh is a fourth generation farmer as far as tea and mikan/madarine oranges are concerned, but as for figs he is a first generation farmer and has grown them for 22 years.

The first that struck me in his orchard is that he uses almost no pesticides or herbicides as proved by the grasses growing freely between the rows of fig trees.
As for fertilizer he mainly uses pig’s manure from a neighboring farmer that he mixes with only a minimum of artificial fertilizer, mainly calcium and potassium.

This particular fig, in spite of its green/-yellow skin is ripe!
It is a “banané fig/バナネ無花果”, a French variety. Beautiful and succulent!

Mr. Naitoh grows three types of figs which don’t need any help for pollination: Banané Fig/バナネ無花果, Common Fig/普通無花果, and

and Violet Figs/ヴィオレ無花果, another French variety which turns to a striking black/purple color when ripe!

One cannot replant a fig tree in the same spot from where another fig tree has been rooted out. Mr. Naitoh therefore keeps experimenting even using discarded polysterene boxes!

Mr. Naitoh also grows fig trees in pots to sell to homes and gardeners!

I wouldn’t mind one of those on my balcony!

For a closer look!
Taking care of a fig tree is not so difficult. Don’t forget to cut the fruit-bearing branches at their base in winter. Don’t worry they will grow fast again and produce two crops in July and Ocotober in warm conditions!

As Mr. Naitoh uses no pesticides, in the afternoon he turns hunter and kill the little critters by hand!

Mr. Naitoh is not only a grower but a fine chef!
I bought this succulent-looking fig compote!
I also got his fig jam!

These figs will be delivered as far as Chiba Prefecture on the other side of Tokyo!

Apart of oranges and tea on pieces of land dispersed in the mountains, Mr. Naitoh also cultivates Roselle/ロセル, a variety of hibiscus.
Now, why is he growing flowers in the middle of his orchards?

For food!

The flowers are picked before they open at all.
The core will be discarded and only the red sepal will be kept to be turned into jam!
I got a full bag of them and made my own jam, reminiscent of acid pomegranates. Absolutely beautiful (in taste as well as in looks!)!

Mr. Naitoh accepts private orders of his three types of figs, fig compote, fig jam, roselle, so do not hesitate to call him!

Shizuoka Sake Tasting: Kanzawagawa Brewery-Shosetsu Futsushu

Kanzawagawa Brewery is also an old establishment located very near the sea at Yui, Shimizu Ku, Shziuoka City along the old Tokaido Road.
They have the merit to still make absolutely extravagant “futsushu/regular sake” at ridiculous prices.

Like most of all futsushu (only 18% of the total production, probably the lowest in Japan), the bottles are adorned with old traditional designs!. As they are easy to conserve thy would make the perfect souvenir back home in the rest of world!

Kansawa Brewery: Shosetsu Futsushu

Alcohol: 15~16 degrees
Rice milled down to 70%
Bottled in January 2010

Clarity: very clear
Colour: transparent
Aroma: Strong attack upon opening the bottle. Tends to dissipate quickly.
Fruity. Bitter chocolate, banana, macadamia nuts
Body: fluid
Taste: Dry attack backed up by delicious alcohol and a basket of dry nuts and bananas.
Complex/not straightforward for a fustushu.
Pleasantly warming up back of the palate with plenty of dry almonds, finishing on a pleasant acid note.
Holds its own well with any food with an accentuated dryness.

Overall: A sake for all meals, although eminently drinkable on its own.
Certainly not the “image” of the futsushu, but futsushu are simply extravagant in Shizuoka Prefecture, considering that the rice millage would qualify it as premium sake!

Shizuoka Sake Tasting: Eikun Brewery-Eikun Futsushu

Eikun Brewery is an old establishment “lost” in the mountains facing the sea at Yui, Shimizu Ku, Shziuoka City.

Eikun: Futsushu
Alcohol: 15~16 degrees
Rice milled down to 70%
Bottled in January 2010

Clarity: very clear
Colour: transparent
Aroma: Fruity, ricey
Body: Fluid
Taste: Dry and soft attack. Discreet.
Fruity and nutty: macadamia nuts, almonds, coconuts.
Disappears quickly with dry nuts.
tends to come up with new facets with the second and third sip (glass).

Overall: Very elegant and extravagant for a futsushu.
Goes well with any food.
A sake for everyday home drinking!
