Yakitori and Kushiyaki, and Shizuoka Sake at KASAI in Shizuoka City!

SErvice: shy but very friendly and always ready to explain everything!
Equipment and facilities: ery clean overall. Excellent washroom.

Strong points high standard traditional yakitori and kushiyaki with some superb surprises in stock! Superb sake list especially from Shizuoka Prefecture!

Kasai has long been an establishment of reference in our City of Shizuoka and deservedly so!
Not only they serve traditional yakitori and kushiyaki of high quality but at reasonable prices but they also pride themselves as serving mainly many local products, be they meat or vegetables, and especially a wide range of great Shizuoka sake!
The other day I had the occasion to visit the place in the company of two Canadian/Quebecqois clients who were very keen to sample local gastronomy after a visit of our wasabi and tea fields! They certainly were not disappointed and surprised the owner with their ferocious appetite!

We started by tasting our first sake from Shizuoka Prefecture right away; Isojiman Ginjyo from Yaizu City!
Note that the sakes were chosen by the owner-chef!

We started with this set: asparagus and bacon rolls and “circles” of shiso and pork!

Also Isojiman from Yaizu City but this time a Junmai Ginjyo!

More asparagus and bacon rolls and large prawns rolled in thin slices of pork!

This came as a “service”, thin slices of new celery with cream sauce and shaved cheese!

And it was time to taste our sake: Garyubai Junmai Ginjyo by Sanwa Brewery in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

The next dish might surprise newcomers to Japan! Extra beef brochettes/kushiyaki, again asparagus rolled in bacon and Shizuoka Wagyu Beef brochettes!
Shizuoka Prefectures has no less than 12 state-labeled wagyu farms! No need to go anywhere else in Japan!

Some dishes just have to tried twice or more! LOL

Geso/squid tentacles, large prawn rolled in thin slices of pork and extra beef!

Two more Shizuoka wagyu brochettes and a specialty of the house: tomato and pork rolls!

Our final Shizuoka Prefecture sake: Karakaze karakuchi junmai ginjyo by Hana no Mai Brewery in Hamakita Ku, Hamamatsu City!

And for the finish Kasai-style exploded chicken wings yakitori!

The nly problem is that I will have to write another blog to introduce all the dishes and sakes we had not tasted!

Shizuoka Prefecture Izakaya: Hizuki in Shimada City!

Equipment & Facilities: overall spotless clean. Superb washroom
Prices: reasonable~slightly expensive
Strong points: Fusion izakaya cuisine mainly with local products. Excellent sake, wine and whislies list

Shimada City is finally awakening from a long torpor and it is time to keep your eyes, ears and other senses open!
Just stroll from the north exit of Shimada Station and you are bound to make a discovery!

My good German friend, Stefan Wimmer, and I took only a few minutes to discover Hizuki/ひづき!

The recommended menu posted outside certainly whetted our appetites!

The interior is definitely that of a modern izakaya/Japanese-style bistro but with a real chef in the person of owner Akimasa Ooishi/大石明昌さん who boasts a long experience in French cooking acquired in one of the best hotels of the Prefecture!

The menu is truly fusion cuisine with a happy marriage of Japanese and French cuisines in particular!
The two of us did not have much time on our hands that night, that waiting for the train to head back to Shizuoka City, but we certainly made the most of it!

Absolutely succulent grilled beef tongue that looked, bit and tasted more like a real steak!
A discovery and a must!

We couldn’t ignore the karaage/Japanese-style fried chicken, which has become a Japanese cuisine hallmark all over the world!

Now, Akimasa’s karaage is not only appetizing but absolutely above anything I have tasted so far, not an overstatement as it combines all kinds of ingredients and tastes! One does find oneself at a loss describing simple-looking but exquisite food!

We were both intrigued by the “butter-fried scallops and prawns”!

Yuki Gion does not advertise much but it is always crowded even on weekdays as it is an old-style izakaya where the atmosphere is really informal and where customers sit elbow to elbow enjoying some very reasonable cuisine and fine sake!
Japanese tourists, foreign tourists and locals mix in at ease and the staff is simply easy-going but very attentive at the same time.

Note that the top chef (there are at least four of hem!) is the only one wearing a neck tie and also the only in charge of the raw fish!

A nice cup of icy shochu and some edomame (cooked on site!)!

It had been some time since my last visit to Yasaitei in Shizuoka City!
This is the ideal place in summer when you are in a bit of a hurry. Just sit at the counter (But come early!) and order some fresh vegetables with a cup of icy shochu!
In Yasaitei not only you know where all the vegetables come from but they are also of utter freshness!

Now, vegans (I’m not) will be happy to know this is one of the rare places in town where they can not only order vegetables but also consult the owner as for their cooking!
In summer I would definitely recommend a sashimi plate of the vegetables of the day!

Yesterday evening the temperature suddenly dipped and I was hungry as I still had work to do before finally heading for home.
It was then about grand time i visited a favorite izakaya of mine, namely Yasaitei in Shizuoka City!
This is the kind of place you can enter any time provided it is not full (and it can be at certain times and on the week end!), have a quick snack, a drink, a little talk and move out!
When you know that all the food is healthy and satisfying you need not worry about your health or weight!

I had come early enough as I know some delicious oden were ready at this cold time of the year.
Yasaitei’s oden are particular for the fact that they are Kansai-style, that is cooked in a light broth, as opposed to the very dark soup prevalent in this city. Although both are delicious, the former is far healthier!

But before my oden were prepared I had ordered a glass of fine shochu from Amami Island in Kyushu and sipped it on the rocks with my o-toshi (snack coming with the first drink): seaweed, grated Japanese yam and shirasu/sardine whiting!

My oden plate served in traditional pottery dish with plenty of broth and chopped scallion and some yuzukoshio/yuzu and pepper seasoning!

Chikuwa/fish paste tube, ganmodoki/deep-fried soft tofu, ito konnyaku/Hard jelly filaments made with the tuber of a konjac.

And daikon under the chikuwa, simmered to a great softness and very elegant taste!
“Oden” can be translated with the French word “Japanese Pot-au-feu!”
I wish I could cook it for my friends back home in France!

Time and again I have said that vegans and vegetarians would probably have their happiest times in Japan, at least for gastronomes, because this country, and especially Shizuoka with its mild weather and abundance of vegetables in all seasons, can provide all ingredients all year round whose traceability is easy to prove!

The above o-tooshi/お通し/is not vegetarian, but you aforementioned priorities will ensure it is!

There are many places in Shizuoka City and Prefecture offering alternatives to their omnivorous dishes for vegans and vegetarians who still want to enjoy their outing with friends with different priorities.
One such place, and arguably the best at it, is Yasaitei in Tokiwa Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!
Incidentally the owner/chef and staff are all ladies, but customers are certainly of both genders!

Service: +3 very friendly and smiling. Easy-going but attentive
Equipment & Facilities: +3 Very clean overall. Superb gender separated washrooms
Prices: +2 reasonable
Strong points: Traditional izakaya cuisine including oden. Excellent seafood and drink list including local sake.

OKAMURA-IKICHI-3

Located a few minutes walk from Yaizu JR Station south exit Minato Machi Okamura Ikichi is actually one of the 6 similar establishments owned by Fujieda City-based Okamura Roman Co. with restaurants in Fujieda City (2), Shizuoka City, Yaizu City, Shimada City and a vegetable bar in Fujieda City
They all seem to share two traits:
-Modern design outside (which does not always feature the name of the restaurant) and generally young but knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff!
The food and concept are both traditional and modern for the pleasure of all genders and age groups!

They both have a regular and seasonal menu.
Although they will soon have to think of an English menu the staff will be more than happy to explain it!

I found the range of local sake quite excellent for such an establishment which can seat no less than 134 guests on two different floors!
Of course all kinds of drinks are available!

And the sake comes in generous portions!
Now, as for the food you will to come quite a few times before exhausting the whole menu!

A Shizuoka delicacy/comfort food: oden/Japanese pot au feu.
The broth not being as dark and strong as in some other izakaya in Shizuoka Prefecture, you certainly drink it up!

A reasonably-priced sashimi plate (for two)!

Featuring mackerel, seabream and local horse mackerel!

There plenty of vegetables available too fresh or cooked, from the traditional fried potato sticks,
