American Bar Restaurant: Lunch at Paradiso in Minato Yokocho, Mochimune, Shizuoka Ciy!

Minato Yokocho front!

Service: kind and attentive if a bit shy (at first!)
Equipment & facilities: overall very clean. Shared but very clean and complete washroom.
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: Great open hamburgers (“hambaagu” in Japanese!). Craft beers (although they tend to disappear quickly!)

Picture of the old Minato Yokocho!

Some time ago, CSA Real estate Co., actually based in Mochimune, among other projects took on to renew completely the old derelict Minato/harbor Yokocho/Alley to invite existing and new tenants to provide a much needed food and drinks site to the ever increasing number of tourists. Moreover, since bathers are rarer and rarer on the beach most shacks and bars have disappeared from the sea front it has become a natural spot to patronize as it caters for so many tastes and priorities!
I have already visited and written about a few places and will continue for some time!

This time I visited Paradiso!

Take your time and have a good look at the menu boards outside since it includes good pictures!
Lunch sets are a good bet and very reasonable!

Very simple but very clean settings including seats at tables and counter bar!

Craft beers on offer but they tend to change and disappear quickly! LOL
Night owls will find it very practical, too!

It was our first visit and that at lunch so we opted for almost the same set lunch!
Above is the Missus’ order: Wagyu (yes, you read it!) hambaaguu (Japanese style open hamburger)!
Ridiculously reasonable price at 1080 yen!

My own version!

But with two deep-fried prawns! For 1380 yen!

But don’t overlook the Kuroge/black hair wagyu gyusuji/tendon curry, the tako/octopus rice and fried food set lunch including prawns, oysters and fish! All accompanied with a small salad!

Can you guess what I will have next time? LOL

Hawaiian Bar Restaurant: Lunch at Sea Zoo in Minato Yokocho, Mochimune, Shizuoka Ciy!

Minato Yokocho front!

Service: kind and attentive if a bit shy (at first!)
Equipment & facilities: overall very clean. Shared but very clean and complete washroom.
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: Hawaiian gastronomy, international gastronomy, craft beers.

I have already visited and written about a few places and will continue for some time!

This time I visited Sea Zoo!

I classified it as a Hawaiian bar restaurant, but I could have followed their own title of “Healthy Dining and Bar”!
And thanks to the new concept it is open all year round!

When open it has all kinds of board menu outside to peruse before entering!

Not only food for lunch and dinner but drinks of all kinds all day long!

Although it is also open in winter it definitely has a summer flavor about it!

And do not forget this also a bar! LOL

Definitely the place for craft beer lovers although all kinds of drinks are on offer!

Even at lunch I would not pass the opportunity to enjoy a tasty craft beer!

A la carte food changing all the time!

But the lunch sets are not only well above average but also so reasonably priced!

Set lunches are served with a “mini salad” which has not nothing “mini” about it!

Italian organic pasta in Peperocino style with sardine whiting/shirasu from Mochimune!

Healthy (no oil or water used!) coconuts chicken curry!

No risk of getting fat here, that is if you do not abuse the booze! LOL
But definitely a good bet anytime you visit Mochimune1

Craft Beers and Tex Mex Gastronomy at Golden Nectar in Shizuoka City!

Service: Shy but very friendly and attentive
Equipment and facilities: Overall very clean. Excellent washroom.
Prices: Reasonable to slightly expensive
Strong points: Craft beers! Tex Mex gastronomy. Craft beer tasting sets/

Golden Nectar has deservedly established its name in Shizuoka City for a couple of years now, and it is increasingly becoming busy especially on week ends be it sunny or rainy!
It consists of a high stool bar counter where you can see all the craft beers served on the tap. Bear in mind they change regularly! I would advise to try a full sample drinking set of them!

Check the list of the day!

Tables are available for small groups and customers wanting more comfort or less exposure!

Now, it is not all craft beers on the tap but there are plenty of other American craft beers in bottles and cans inside the refrigerated display near the entrance! Choose your bottle or can and it will be served in glasses by the staff!. Pictures are welcome!

North Coast Brewing Acme IPA!

Aurora Koppyalis from San Diego!

Hazy Little Thing IPA by Sierra Nevada Brewing!

Amarilla Gorilla IPA by Smog City Brewery!

Deftones Phantm Bride IPA by Belching Beaver Brewery!

Another IPA by Smog City Brewing!

now, look at the menus! Plenty of salads for the health conscious!

My personal favorite, Texas caviar carefully made with local fresh vegetables and buritos!

As for food, I do have a suggestion: first go to loaded fries and choose the cheesy fries!

Scrumptious fries by themselves,…

But order them together with fish fritters!

And you have a Tex Mex fish and chips!

Excellent fried fish on its own, actually!
But check the rest of the menu!
Always something to discover!

American Gastronomy and Craft Beers at “12” in Shizuoka City!

Service: Shy but very kind and attentive
Equipment: Spotless clean. Excellent washroom. Non smoking
Prices: Slighly expensive
Strong Points: American craft beers. Excellent bar food. Beers regularly changed. Large live sports screens.

“12” is an unusual name for a bar or restaurant. The owner, a fan of all sports in Seattle, USA, be they the Seattle Supersonics basketball tea, the Seattle Seahawks American football team or the Seattle Mariners baseball team, has taken a liking for their number “12” jerseys, hence the name of the stablishment. Incidentally all the games of these teams can be viewed live or later on no less than three big screens.
The whole design was conceived by American Shizuoka City resident, Derrek Buston, who has actually just opened his own bar/brewery, West Coast Brewery, in Mochimune, and some of his brews will be served on the tap at “12” from June!

It is located just next to the side entrance torii/sacred gate of Ogushi Shrine. You can surmise that all drinkers are automatically blessed! LOL

The food there, notwithstanding their common household names, is definitely of a better variety for all tastes!
My favorite is the fish and chips (Brirish food for you, but better than in Great Britain!)!

Made with fresh cod and fried on order!

Served with spicy French fries (they are Belgian!) fried on order and homemade coleslaw!

And authentic red wine vinegar!

For the moment all craft beers on the tap or in cans afrom mainly Seattle and its surroundings but sometimes from other places such as Wyoming!
There ar nine craft beers served on the tap and regularly changed. And fully described on the menu!
I actually have a liking for their canned beers and ciders as there are so many to explore!

Incidentally, vegetarians and vegans shouldn’t need  worry as they have a beautiful organic salad on the menu for you!

To be continued, of course!

Peruvian Cuisine and Cheese at Fiesta Garcia Beer Bar & Restaurant in Shizuoka City!

Service: Ever-smiling and very social
Equipment & Facilities Overall very clean. Excellent washroom
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Peruvian traditional Cuisine. Home-made Peruvian Cheese. Craft beers.

FIESTA-GARCIA-2

Ima koko Building First Floor Alley in Shichiken Cho, Aoi ku, Shizuoka City is steadily filling up with cozy and small bars and restaurants!

FIESTA-GARCIA-3

The newest place to move in is “Fiesta Garcia” Beer Bar & Restaurante owned and managed by a Shizuoka City Peruvian citizen going by the name of Fredy Garcia!

FIESTA-GARCIA-4

A very open and welcoming place indeed!

FIESTA-GARCIA-5

A small corner of the Andean country!

FIESTA-GARCIA-6

A smiling skull is looking after you over a small counter!

FIESTA-GARCIA-9

The place is tiny and every available space is used!

FIESTA-GARCIA-10

Bottled craft beers from all over the world are in front (and behind) of you!

FIESTA-GARCIA-11

My beer for this (too short) first visit!

FIESTA-GARCIA-7

Do have a good look at the drink you!

FIESTA-GARCIA-8

And have an even longer look at food menu!
There are quite a few unusual things in wait for you!

FIESTA-GARCIA-12

Now, this is quite unusual, and would be anywhere in Japan because Fredy and his older brother make their own Peruvian-style queso/cheese in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!
Don’t worry, I will soon interview them at work at their dairy!
The above is fresh queso blanco, a bit similar to semi hard cottage cheese cut into wedges and pan-fried on a little oil and served with mayo sauce, hot mayo sauce and yuzu koshio!

FIESTA-GARCIA-13

And this is even better:
Top, left, queso blanco  in queso fredo style/fresh cheese (the same as the fried one).
Top, right, manchego-style cheese processed in a different way and matured for some time.
Bottom left, queso albino where white wine was added to the milk when making the rice and later washed in red wine!
Bottom right, home semi-dried tomatoes!

The menu might be short, but it will give me plenty of reasons to come back and visit my new friend, Fredy Garcia!
Stay tuned!

Craft Beer Station in Shizuoka City!

Service: Easy-going and very friendly. English spoken.
Equipment and facilities: Very clean and overall. Small but very clean washroom. Non-smoking!
Prices: slightly expensive but no charge. Good value overall.
Strong points: local craft beers on the tap. Various bottled beers. Beer pub food.

CRAFT-BEER-STATION-3

Craft beer is definitely witnessing a boom in Shizuoka City to the point that beer bars and pubs are definitely not enough to cater for all the beer-lovers in our city!
Fortunately enough Naoya Kojima/小島直哉さん has grasoed the need and opened his new craft beer bar, Craft Beer Station just within walking distance from the North exit of Shizuoka JR Station!

CRAFT-BEER-STATION-1

This beer-quaffing squirrel will become a collector’s item!

Located on the second floor of a building next to the west entrance of Parco Department Store it would be easy to miss but for that beautiful board!

CRAFT-BEER-STATION-4

Find the blackboard at the bottom of the stairs and start climbing!

CRAFT-BEER-STATION-5

Most of it in English!
6 craft beers on tap including 3 Shizuoka Prefecture craft beers: Hansharo (Izu no Kuni City, Izu Nagaoka), Baird beer (Izu no Kuni City, Shuzenji), and Aoi Brewing (Shizuoka City!)
No charge! No smoking! Cash on delivery payment! English OK!

CRAFT-BEER-STATION-8

Naoya Kojima/小島直哉さん at work!

The place, although a bit narrow is very convivial in its concept and it is fun to drink there with friends in very close proximity!

CRAFT-BEER-STATION-7

Plenty of drinks and food!
If you can’t read, Naoya will be glad to help you!

CRAFT-BEER-STATION-9

The 6 craft beers of the day on tap!
All from Shizuoka Prefecture!
Expect them to be changed regularly!

CRAFT-BEER-STATION-6

The craft beers shared with friends on that day!
All from Shizuoka Prefecture!

CRAFT-BEER-STATION-10

Fried potato wedges!

This was my first visit, a bit too short to my liking but expect more reports in the near future!

Bar-Izakaya: Two Base in Shizuoka City!

Service: a bit shy but very friendly
Equipment & facilities: overall very clean. Excellent washroom if a bit small
Prices: Reasonable~slightly expensive
Strong points: Great list of sake. Stand bar with seats on pavement

SN3O0005

Just discovered a new bar cum izakaya cum standing bar in an unusual location at the very crossing of Egawa Street and Showa Street!

SN3O0006

The place is called “Two base”, not because of baseball but because it is the sister bar of another place called KODONA!
The concept is quite practical with the possibility to sit or stand at the counter or at a table on the pavement!

SN3O0003

Looking at the small refrigerator at the entrance you soon find out that sake is a staple there!

SN3O0001

Have a good look at the board outside before entering!

SN3O0002

The bar which Manager Yoshimi Mochizuki/望月良美さん also calls an izakaya offers quite a nice ever-increasing range of sake from the whole country!

SN3O0007

But it does offer more including shochu from Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0004

And don’t worry, there are also plenty of snacks!

SN3O0009

Now, what did I have for my first visit?

SN3O0008

A celebrated sake from Oomuraya Brewery in Shimada City: “Onna Nake/making a woman cry” junmai daiginjo!

SN3O0010

But I couldn’t take my leave before sampling this exquisite junmai ginjo by Ippaku Suisei Brewery from Akita Prefecture!

lright, you understood this is only the start of another long story! LOL

Bar: 13 Anchorz in Shizuoka City!

SN3O0022

Service: very easy–going and friendly.
Equipment & facilities: Very clean overall. Superb washroom. 2 floors
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Better than average pub/bar food. Drinks, of course!

SN3O0025

The “drinking scene” in Shizuoka City has been changing pretty quickly recently and an area worth a second and third look is a new alley tucked on the first floor of a building called Imakoko in Shichiken Cho Aoi Ku) in the a street just parallel to Showa Street.

Among the bars, restaurants and izakaya you will discover a quaint place with an even stranger name, “13 Anchorz”!

SN3O0023

With a sign like that you can’t go wrong! LOL

SN3O0027

The place was open on January 11th this year as indicated on this sake bottle!

SN3O0026

You can’t miss it with such a view inside!

SN3O0024

Written in English!
Reasonable drinks and food.
Opened late ad closed late!

SN3O0031

The young owner, Kyoken Sugiyama/杉山陽平さん, after a stint in the Japanese Self Defense Army did spend quite some time in Ireland before deciding to open his impossible to classify establishment as it is a combination of a bar and izakaya!

SN3O0030

One can sit at bar, especially welcome when you are on your own!

SN3O0029

Or you can sit at a table with company, or on the 2nd floor for more privacy!

SN3O0028

As for the drinks, you may choose your own bottled beer or bottle of wine and open it yourself or order it (you might have to wait some time though as Kyoken’s food is quite popular)!

SN3O0034

Have a good look at the drinks and their “companions” at the bar!

SN3O0033

I had a menacing Mexican IPA for a start!

SN3O0035

Have a good look at the menu!
The ladies will love this soft blue cheese called Fourme D’Ambert (France) served with honey nuts and bread!

SN3O0036

Now, this the dish I would recommend to all (coming into 3 different sizes!)!

SN3O0037

Fish and chips made with mahi mahi fish from Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0038

Arguably the best fish and chips in Shizuoka City!

SN3O0039

Great when washed down with American Anchor Steam Beer!

Expect me to visit the place again soon as the music is also terrific!

Cafe & Bar: Hug Coffee Espresso Roasters in Shizuoka City!

Service: easy-going and smiling
Equipment & facilities: All a bit narrow but very clean. Excellent washroom shared on 2nd floor of same Sunrose building. Non–smoking
Prices: reasonable~ a little expensive
Strong points: 34 coffees and teas, craft beers, light food and bagels

SN3O0003

Hug Coffee Company in Shizuoka City has three cafes/shops/bars in town, all different in style and concept.
They are increasingly becoming popular with all genders and ages for their convenience.
My favorite is the one called Hug Coffee Espresso Rosters (also called “sangouten”, meaning “3rd shop”!) between Cenova Department Store 109 Building for many reasons.

SN3O0010

It reminds me of my psychedelic years and the staff is cool and sometimes outright zany.
Actually the Lady In Charge, Miyako Suzuki/鈴木京さん is a god friend of mine.
First of all smokers are kindly asked to pry their trade far away for the shop!

SN3O0002

All drinks are made on site to satisfy all cravings!

SN3O0009

But the main attraction is their beers including no less than 9 brews by Baird Beer, the most famous craft beer Company in Shizuoka prefecture!

SN3O0007

They even serve a very limited (hurry, as it is only seasonal, although they plan to serve it every year!) Morning Coffee Stout made in collaboration with Bryan Baird and their own coffee!
Tasting report coming soon!

HUGS-BAIRD-3

Bryan Baird’s recent visit to Hugs Coffee Espresso Roasters!

You will surely understand why you can expect many craft beer tasting reports in the near future!

Weird Japan (16): Anyone for a Chaotic Hair Style?

Taken in Aoba, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

This is a hair salon!
They probably meant “Super Avant-Garde hair Styles” or “Way out Original Haircuts”!

Weird Japan (13): Fancy a Drink Before a Break-in?

I love the name of this bar in Ryogae-Cho, Shizuoka City!
Mind you a couple too many drinks there could encourage me into some illegal activities!
They serve Guiness which explains the shamrock!

Shizuoka Sake Bar: Sachiho in Shizuoka City!

Some famous Shizuoka Sake!

Service: Very friendly and informal
Facilities: Very clean overall. Superb washroom
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Shizuoka Sake of course!

At long last a bar that offers a wide range of Shizuoka sakes as a theme was opened last December in Shizuoka City!
And it is entirely non-smoking!

Mind you, since it opens at 5 pm, it is not always easy to take pictures outside or inside if you do not want to bother people with a flash!

It is conveniently tucked away in Takajo, Aoi Ku, a very busy place at night.
It also has the merit to be patronized both by ladies and gentlemen, mostly real Japanese and Shizuoka sake connoisseurs!

Ms. Sachiho Nagasawa/長沢佐線帆さん has shochu with her own label!

Plenty of sake on display but I know for a fact there are some hidden (better become a regular customer! LOL)!

There are only 7 seats at the counter.
No risk of a noisy crowd, although it might be a good idea to reserve!

The system is pretty simple:
Between 05:00 and 10:00 you must choose between the menus at 1,500 yen or 2,500 yen, all home-style food.
After 10:00 only drinks is ok!

A nice message on your paper napkin!

Now I like that! The sake is served in wine glasses for proper tasting!
Do confer with Sachiho San before choosing your sake!

All typical local homey food!
Shizuoka oden!

Salad.
Sorry for the fuzzy pictures.
It was my first visit and my “camera” did not agree with me!
In any case I will come again soon and I promise better pics!

Simmered sardine.

Stewed chicken and vegetables.

Savory salad.

Japanese pickles.

Don’t worry, I’ll be back there very soon!
I’m actually thinking of conducting some real tasting late at night there!

To be continued…
