Shizuoka Izakaya: Dinner at Maru Ryou in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

The first starters!

Service: A bit shy but very kind and attentive
Equipment and Facilities: Overall very clean. Excellent washroom
Prices: reasonable
Strong Points: Authentic izakaya cuisine. Nice list of sake and shochu. Accent on local products, especially seasonal fish.

Superb set of local fish sashimi (part 1)!

Shimizu Ku (formerly Shimizu City before its merger with Shizuoka City) has of late been witnessing a revival of its old quarters, what with the new influx of tourists and the modernization of the access to its fishing harbor!
Get off at Shimizu JR Station, turn on the left, get down the stairs, walk on the left across a small street and continue until you find a long covered arcade on your left.
This has become the location for new izakayas, shops and bars!
You will find Maru Ryou/まる両 easily enough!

Superb set of local fish sashimi (part 2)!

I had the pleasure to discover the place thanks to a friend who happens to be a true local of this part of the city!
As we share a taste of good local food and drinks, I was sure to come to the right place!
They do have a nice list of local sake in particular, and you must try the fish as this is a major fishing town in the whole of Japan!

Fresh raw shirasu/sardine whiting, a local specialty!

As a true Japanese izakaya they will also offer all kinds of cooked various ways!
Deep-fried octopus!

Japanese chicken brochettes/yakitori!

Back to fish with another loala fish: aji tataki/horse mackerel tartare! unbeatable frshness!

A specialty of the place, a bit out the ordinary: Unagi tamago donburi/ eel and egg bowl!

And to beat the cold outside before going home: Ochazuke/rice tea soup!

Can’t to go there again, alone or in good company, whatever the time of the year!

Yakitori and Kushiyaki, and Shizuoka Sake at KASAI in Shizuoka City!

SErvice: shy but very friendly and always ready to explain everything!
Equipment and facilities: ery clean overall. Excellent washroom.
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points high standard traditional yakitori and kushiyaki with some superb surprises in stock! Superb sake list especially from Shizuoka Prefecture!

Kasai has long been an establishment of reference in our City of Shizuoka and deservedly so!
Not only they serve traditional yakitori and kushiyaki of high quality but at reasonable prices but they also pride themselves as serving mainly many local products, be they meat or vegetables, and especially a wide range of great Shizuoka sake!
The other day I had the occasion to visit the place in the company of two Canadian/Quebecqois clients who were very keen to sample local gastronomy after a visit of our wasabi and tea fields! They certainly were not disappointed and surprised the owner with their ferocious appetite!

We started by tasting our first sake from Shizuoka Prefecture right away; Isojiman Ginjyo from Yaizu City!
Note that the sakes were chosen by the owner-chef!

We started with this set: asparagus and bacon rolls and “circles” of shiso and pork!

Also Isojiman from Yaizu City but this time a Junmai Ginjyo!

More asparagus and bacon rolls and large prawns rolled in thin slices of pork!

This came as a “service”, thin slices of new celery with cream sauce and shaved cheese!

And it was time to taste our sake: Garyubai Junmai Ginjyo by Sanwa Brewery in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

The next dish might surprise newcomers to Japan! Extra beef brochettes/kushiyaki, again asparagus rolled in bacon and Shizuoka Wagyu Beef brochettes!
Shizuoka Prefectures has no less than 12 state-labeled wagyu farms! No need to go anywhere else in Japan!

Some dishes just have to tried twice or more! LOL

Geso/squid tentacles, large prawn rolled in thin slices of pork and extra beef!

Two more Shizuoka wagyu brochettes and a specialty of the house: tomato and pork rolls!

Our final Shizuoka Prefecture sake: Karakaze karakuchi junmai ginjyo by Hana no Mai Brewery in Hamakita Ku, Hamamatsu City!

And for the finish Kasai-style exploded chicken wings yakitori!

The nly problem is that I will have to write another blog to introduce all the dishes and sakes we had not tasted!

Shizuoka Prefecture Izakaya: Hizuki in Shimada City!

hizuki-1

Service: smiling and attentive
Equipment & Facilities: overall spotless clean. Superb washroom
Prices: reasonable~slightly expensive
Strong points: Fusion izakaya cuisine mainly with local products. Excellent sake, wine and whislies list

Shimada City is finally awakening from a long torpor and it is time to keep your eyes, ears and other senses open!
Just stroll from the north exit of Shimada Station and you are bound to make a discovery!

hizuki-2

My good German friend, Stefan Wimmer, and I took only a few minutes to discover Hizuki/ひづき!

hizuki-3

The recommended menu posted outside certainly whetted our appetites!

hizuki-6

The interior is definitely that of a modern izakaya/Japanese-style bistro but with a real chef in the person of owner Akimasa Ooishi/大石明昌さん who boasts a long experience in French cooking acquired in one of the best hotels of the Prefecture!

hizuki-4

The menu is truly fusion cuisine with a happy marriage of Japanese and French cuisines in particular!
The two of us did not have much time on our hands that night, that waiting for the train to head back to Shizuoka City, but we certainly made the most of it!

hizuki-5

The o-tooshi/お通し, snack served with the first drink set the tone!

hizuki-8

Absolutely succulent grilled beef tongue that looked, bit and tasted more like a real steak!
A discovery and a must!

hizuki-9

We couldn’t ignore the karaage/Japanese-style fried chicken, which has become a Japanese cuisine hallmark all over the world!

hizuki-10

Now, Akimasa’s karaage is not only appetizing but absolutely above anything I have tasted so far, not an overstatement as it combines all kinds of ingredients and tastes! One does find oneself at a loss describing simple-looking but exquisite food!

hizuki-11

We were both intrigued by the “butter-fried scallops and prawns”!

hizuki-12

Definitely French-inspired!

hizuki-13

Superb local vegetables!

hizuki-14

Great butter and herbs sauce! More French restaurant than izakaya!

hizuki-15

And unbeatable enormous scallops with their eggs!

See you there again soon, you can bet!

Gastronomic Destinations: Dinner at Yuki Gion Izakaya Restaurant in Kyoto City!

yuki-gion-1

Service: Smiling and attentive
Equipment & Facilities: Old but very clean overall. Excellent gender-separated washroom
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Kyoto-style izakaya cuisine. Okamura Honke Brewery sake! English menus.

yuki-gion-2

Yuki Gion does not advertise much but it is always crowded even on weekdays as it is an old-style izakaya where the atmosphere is really informal and where customers sit elbow to elbow enjoying some very reasonable cuisine and fine sake!
Japanese tourists, foreign tourists and locals mix in at ease and the staff is simply easy-going but very attentive at the same time.

yuki-gion-5

The restaurant is actually the property of Okamura Honke Brewery in neighboring Shiga Prefecture!

yuki-gion-3

The whole range of their sake is available from 90% to 40% millage!

yuki-gion-7

One of the sake we had, with rice milled down to 60%!

yuki-gion-8

A nama genshu, it was served to you directly the Japanese izakaya traditonal way, that is very generously!

yuki-gion-6

Everything is prepared in front of you!
Note that the top chef (there are at least four of hem!) is the only one wearing a neck tie and also the only in charge of the raw fish!

yuki-gion-9

As this is typically slow food style, you have plenty of time to enjoy the sight of chefs at work!

yuki-gion-10

We started with sashimi moriawase/raw seafood assortment!

yuki-gion-11

Urchin, tuna, salmon, black seabream!

yuki-gion-12

More of the same as we were two of us!

yuki-gion-13

Tomorokoshi kakiage/Japanese-style corn fritters!

yuki-gion-14

Local vegetable salad!

yuki-gion-15

Kyoto City specialty: Hamo/conger eel pike tempura!

yuki-gion-16

Grilled nodokuro/a variety of rosy seabass!

yuki-gion-17

Sake white lees pickles vegetables!

yuki-gion-18

To finish, mentaiko gohan/steamed rice with spicy cod roe for the Dragon!

yuki-gion-19

And grilled salmon chazuke for me!

A discovery!

Vegan Japanese Gastronomy: Vegetable Sashimi Plate at Yasaitei in Shizuoka City!

YASAITEI-2

Service: Excellent and very friendly
Facilities: Very clean, Beautiful washroom
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: Vegan and vegetarian Cuisine possible any time, Izakaya gastronomy, local products, oden. Good list of sake, shochu. Wines also available.

YASAITEI-3

A nice cup of icy shochu and some edomame (cooked on site!)!

It had been some time since my last visit to Yasaitei in Shizuoka City!
This is the ideal place in summer when you are in a bit of a hurry. Just sit at the counter (But come early!) and order some fresh vegetables with a cup of icy shochu!
In Yasaitei not only you know where all the vegetables come from but they are also of utter freshness!

YASAITEI-4

Now, vegans (I’m not) will be happy to know this is one of the rare places in town where they can not only order vegetables but also consult the owner as for their cooking!
In summer I would definitely recommend a sashimi plate of the vegetables of the day!
Well, what did I have the pleasure to savor this time?

YASAITEI-5

As for the dressing, do not worry!
You will be served a small plate containing sesame oil, rock salt and red miso paste!

YASAITEI-6

Ice plant, celery (Shizuoka Prefecture produces half of the Japanese crop!) and plum tomato!

YASAITEI-7

Sliced daikon resting on fresh perilla leaves!

YASAITEI-8

Crunchy Japanese cucumber!

YASAITEI-9

Myoga ginger!

So simple, but so tasty!

Japanese Izakaya: Yasaitei In Shizuoka City! (For Vegans, Vegetarians and Omnivores!)

SN3O0159

IZAKAYA RANKING: +3
Service: +3 Excellent and very friendly
Facilities: +3 Very clean, Beautiful washroom
Prices: +2 reasonable
Strong points: Vegan and vegetarian Cuisine possible any time, Izakaya gastronomy, local products, oden. Good list of sake, shochu. Wines also available.

SN3O0166

Time and again I have said that vegans and vegetarians would probably have their happiest times in Japan, at least for gastronomes, because this country, and especially Shizuoka with its mild weather and abundance of vegetables in all seasons, can provide all ingredients all year round whose traceability is easy to prove!

SN3O0157

The above o-tooshi/お通し/is not vegetarian, but you aforementioned priorities will ensure it is!

There are many places in Shizuoka City and Prefecture offering alternatives to their omnivorous dishes for vegans and vegetarians who still want to enjoy their outing with friends with different priorities.
One such place, and arguably the best at it, is Yasaitei in Tokiwa Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!
Incidentally the owner/chef and staff are all ladies, but customers are certainly of both genders!
And here is one recommendation:

SN3O0158

Vegetable sashimi plate!
The above is the basic one, but you certainly may order for a bigger variety!

SN3O0163

View for the other side!

SN3O0160

Ice plant and celery!

One thing all these vegetables have in common is that they are super fresh, crunchy, juicy and so tasty!

SN3O0161

Tomatoes and daikon!

SN3O0162

Japanese cucumber!

SN3O0164

Onion and shiso/perilla leaf!

SN3O0159

Simple but exquisite dressing made with higher-class sesame oil, rock salt and miso paste!

SN3O0168

For friends who like seafood: cod roe steamed and marinated in rice vinegar!

SN3O2921

Another “o-tooshi/お通し/snack served with the first drink!

SN3O2922

Lotus root/renkon/蓮根 in “kinpira” fashion!
Such a satisfying crunch!

SN3O2924

Grilled fresh shiitake/椎茸!

SN3O2925

The shiitake were simply grilled and seasoned with soy sauce before being served over shiso/perilla leaves.

SN3O2926

Freshly grated daikon and ginger were provided for further seasoning and enjoyment.

SN3O2927

Surely one of the best ways to enjoy fresh shiitake!

SN3O3006

Another o-tooshi!

SN3O3007

Mushrooms and fried tofu o-hitashi/お浸し/Japanese-style light appetizer!

SN3O3009

Maitake, tomato and spinach stir-fried in sesame oil and served with fresh coriander!
Maitake/舞茸 in English stands for mushrooms called Hen-of-the-Woods, Ram’s Head or Sheep’s Head!

SN3O3010

Juicy and so tasty mushrooms!

SN3O3011

Note the coriander for beautiful balance in presentation and taste!

SN3O3073

Another o-tooshi!

SN3O3074

Mushrooms and mekabu/芽蕪/small turnips! If you are vegetarian or vegan just tell them not to top it with katsuo bushi!

SN3O3075

Steamed eringe (or eringi)/エリンゲ/known in English as king trumpet mushroom, French horn mushroom or king oyster mushroom!

SN3O3076

The eringe were steamed together with fresh cucumber and served with freshly grated Shizuoka-grown wasabi!

Izakaya: Minato Machi Okamura Ikichi in Yaizu City!

OKAMURA-IKICHI-2

IZAKAYA RANKING: +1~+2
Service: +3 very friendly and smiling. Easy-going but attentive
Equipment & Facilities: +3 Very clean overall. Superb gender separated washrooms
Prices: +2 reasonable
Strong points: Traditional izakaya cuisine including oden. Excellent seafood and drink list including local sake.

OKAMURA-IKICHI-3

Located a few minutes walk from Yaizu JR Station south exit Minato Machi Okamura Ikichi is actually one of the 6 similar establishments owned by Fujieda City-based Okamura Roman Co. with restaurants in Fujieda City (2), Shizuoka City, Yaizu City, Shimada City and a vegetable bar in Fujieda City
They all seem to share two traits:
-Modern design outside (which does not always feature the name of the restaurant) and generally young but knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff!
The food and concept are both traditional and modern for the pleasure of all genders and age groups!

OKAMURA-IKICHI-4

They both have a regular and seasonal menu.
Although they will soon have to think of an English menu the staff will be more than happy to explain it!

OKAMURA-IKICHI-10

I found the range of local sake quite excellent for such an establishment which can seat no less than 134 guests on two different floors!
Of course all kinds of drinks are available!

OKAMURA-IKICHI-5

And the sake comes in generous portions!
Now, as for the food you will to come quite a few times before exhausting the whole menu!
Let me show you what we had for our first visit there!

OKAMURA-IKICHI-6

A Shizuoka delicacy/comfort food: oden/Japanese pot au feu.
The broth not being as dark and strong as in some other izakaya in Shizuoka Prefecture, you certainly drink it up!

OKAMURA-IKICHI-7

A reasonably-priced sashimi plate (for two)!

OKAMURA-IKICHI-8

Featuring mackerel, seabream and local horse mackerel!

OKAMURA-IKICHI-9

And many types of tuna!

OKAMURA-IKICHI-11

There plenty of vegetables available too fresh or cooked, from the traditional fried potato sticks,

OKAMURA-IKICHI-12

to a unique plate of deep fried burdock root shavings!

Well, I suppose other visits are on the cards before I move to their other establishments!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

Izakaya: Kasuri in Shizuoka City!

Service: attentive and easy-going
Equipment & facilities: old but overall clean. Shared washroom (old-fashioned and basic, but clean)
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: oden, comfort food, great sake list. Great traditional Japanese atmosphere!

SN3O0546
SN3O0546

Shizuoka City is renowned all over Japan for a typical Japanese comfort food called “oden”, a kind of Japanese pot–au-feu.
Now, if you want to eat such local food in our city, the best place is Aoba Oden Gai/青葉おでん街 located along Aoba Park Street in Aoi Ku.
This izakaya alley of another era hasn’t changed much when it was created in 1950’s when the City asked the open-air food stands in Aoba Park Street to move out!

SN3O0547
SN3O0547

Everyone in town has its very own favorite odenya/oden izakaya but the busiest area is naturally Aoba Oden Gai where you still have to choose among 18-odd shops!
It took me a long time to choose mine and I have never visited another since then!

SN3O0548
SN3O0548

It is distinctive for its unusual (in Shizuoka) round-shaped red paper lantern with a small cat daring you to come inside!

SN3O0549
SN3O0549

Kasuri/かすり!
Its noren/shop entrance curtain is actually larger than in most shops inside this alley offering some welcome privacy to its patrons!

SN3O0553
SN3O0553

There are many reasons for Kasuri having become my favorite odenya in Shizuoka City.
First of all, the Mama-san, although a very discreet lady who shuns photographs, is a person with whom it is a pleasure to share a talk. She is from Akita Prefecture but has lived long enough in Shizuoka to claim a “double nationality”! Her single presence encourages all the customers to join in quickly in interesting conversations and I suspect some of them patronize Kasuri to catch a few tidbits of information!

SN3O0557
SN3O0557

Another reason is the best choice in sake both from Shizuoka and elsewhere (including Akita of course!) to be found in that alley. The list is practically changing with every week. Make a point to discuss your choice with the Mama San first!

SN3O0560
SN3O0560

Don’t worry, all main drinks are available, including beer, wine, shochu, whisky and some unusual discoveries from time to time!

SN3O0555
SN3O0555

Another reason is the style of oden.
In many places in Shizuoka City the broth can be as dark as the middle of the night, but Kasuri serves a version somewhere between Shizuoka and light broth Kansai style, far healthier and tastier for my own point of view.

SN3O0558
SN3O0558

The oden themselves are served in many manners, either with Japanese hot mustard, aonori/a mixture based on dry green laver seaweed (only in Shizuoka!) or miso mixture, or with all three if it is your fancy!
Among the oden offered to your choice you will fiund quite a few only encountered in our Prefecture!

SN3O0554
SN3O0554

But a more important difference with other odenya is that the Mama San also offers all kinds of freshly prepared comfort food varying with the days and seasonal ingredients available on the local (and in her own Akita Prefecture!)!

SN3O0556
SN3O0556

Accordingly the food comes in all styles from very Japanese hors d’oeuvres to…

SN3O0559
SN3O0559

hot pasta in small dishes!
Well, it doesn’t matter how many times you come, you can always expect some kind of discovery, especially with many patrons bringing some great morsels from their business trips while having a last drink and morsel before hitting the road back home!

SN3O0406
SN3O0406

The place has little changed over the years!

SN3O0407
SN3O0407

It is not the oldest izakaya in town but is certainly the oldest izakaya specialized in Shizuoka Prefecture sake!
Have a look at the sake labels on the window and you will discover some breweries that have long ceased to exist!
Makoto san in particular will happy to reminisce!

SN3O0408
SN3O0408

For their anniversary, Makoto and Chieko offer a special daily selection of five sake for only 500 yen a glass with a complimentary glass of draft beer!
Now, if you give them your name, size, phone number and e-mail address before the 10th you might become the lucky winner of a commemorative T-shirt!

Bar-Izakaya: Two Base in Shizuoka City!

Service: a bit shy but very friendly
Equipment & facilities: overall very clean. Excellent washroom if a bit small
Prices: Reasonable~slightly expensive
Strong points: Great list of sake. Stand bar with seats on pavement

SN3O0005

Just discovered a new bar cum izakaya cum standing bar in an unusual location at the very crossing of Egawa Street and Showa Street!

SN3O0006

The place is called “Two base”, not because of baseball but because it is the sister bar of another place called KODONA!
The concept is quite practical with the possibility to sit or stand at the counter or at a table on the pavement!

SN3O0003

Looking at the small refrigerator at the entrance you soon find out that sake is a staple there!

SN3O0001

Have a good look at the board outside before entering!

SN3O0002

The bar which Manager Yoshimi Mochizuki/望月良美さん also calls an izakaya offers quite a nice ever-increasing range of sake from the whole country!

SN3O0007

But it does offer more including shochu from Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0004

And don’t worry, there are also plenty of snacks!

SN3O0009

Now, what did I have for my first visit?

SN3O0008

A celebrated sake from Oomuraya Brewery in Shimada City: “Onna Nake/making a woman cry” junmai daiginjo!

SN3O0010

But I couldn’t take my leave before sampling this exquisite junmai ginjo by Ippaku Suisei Brewery from Akita Prefecture!

lright, you understood this is only the start of another long story! LOL

Bar: 13 Anchorz in Shizuoka City!

SN3O0022

Service: very easy–going and friendly.
Equipment & facilities: Very clean overall. Superb washroom. 2 floors
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Better than average pub/bar food. Drinks, of course!

SN3O0025

The “drinking scene” in Shizuoka City has been changing pretty quickly recently and an area worth a second and third look is a new alley tucked on the first floor of a building called Imakoko in Shichiken Cho Aoi Ku) in the a street just parallel to Showa Street.

Among the bars, restaurants and izakaya you will discover a quaint place with an even stranger name, “13 Anchorz”!

SN3O0023

With a sign like that you can’t go wrong! LOL

SN3O0027

The place was open on January 11th this year as indicated on this sake bottle!

SN3O0026

You can’t miss it with such a view inside!

SN3O0024

Written in English!
Reasonable drinks and food.
Opened late ad closed late!

SN3O0031

The young owner, Kyoken Sugiyama/杉山陽平さん, after a stint in the Japanese Self Defense Army did spend quite some time in Ireland before deciding to open his impossible to classify establishment as it is a combination of a bar and izakaya!

SN3O0030

One can sit at bar, especially welcome when you are on your own!

SN3O0029

Or you can sit at a table with company, or on the 2nd floor for more privacy!

SN3O0028

As for the drinks, you may choose your own bottled beer or bottle of wine and open it yourself or order it (you might have to wait some time though as Kyoken’s food is quite popular)!

SN3O0034

Have a good look at the drinks and their “companions” at the bar!

SN3O0033

I had a menacing Mexican IPA for a start!

SN3O0035

Have a good look at the menu!
The ladies will love this soft blue cheese called Fourme D’Ambert (France) served with honey nuts and bread!

SN3O0036

Now, this the dish I would recommend to all (coming into 3 different sizes!)!

SN3O0037

Fish and chips made with mahi mahi fish from Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0038

Arguably the best fish and chips in Shizuoka City!

Expect me to visit the place again soon as the music is also terrific!

Japanese Gastronomy: “Shun no Kai” Dinner at Togaji, Shizuoka City!

SN3O0349

Service: Friendly and attentive
Equipment and facilities: Very clean overall. Beautiful “Magic” washroom

Strong points: true Shizuoka and Japan traditional seasonal gastronomy. Great sake!

“Shun no Kai/旬の会” means “Seasonal Gastronomy Association”. Its initiator, Mr. Toshiyuki Iwasawa, a senior official in the Shizuoka Prefecture Government Agriculture and Forestry Department who knows all the farmers and their products in the Prefecture is constantly promoting the products and gastronomy of our Prefecture on a purely volunteer basis by organizing all kinds of dinners, events and seminars in local restaurants, whenever his busy work permits.

SN3O0342

I finally had the pleasure to take part in one of his dinner parties with 15 other guests at a new Japanese Restaurant/high level izakaya called “Tokaji/とか路”. Actually the real name is “Ryouri to Sake Tokaji/料理と咲けとか路/Gastronomy and Sake (the last is a pun also signifying “flowering”!).

Izakaya: Mansouya (満惣屋) in Shizuoka City!

IZAKAYA RANKING: +3
Service: +3 Very kind, attentive and smiling
Equipment & Facilities:+3 Very clean overall. Superb washroom.
Prices:+1~+2 Reasonable
Strong points: Shizuoka sake (all breweries featured!)! Superb sashimi plates. Shizuoka Tea Pork!

See “Izakaya Ranking” system at bottom of article!

SN3O0295

A brand new izakaya was born very recently and is acquiring a very big reputation all over Shizuoka City: Mansouya!

SN3O0296

It is located in a fairly quiet place in Aoi Ku behind Isetan Department Store on the first floor of red-bricked Castle Hotel which used to house a Chinese restaurant!

Note the cedar ball, a feature you will find at the entrance of sake breweries!

SN3O0297

One big reason for its popularity is that it is the only establishment serving sake from all the breweries in Shizuoka Prefecture, even those which are on the fringes selling somebody else’s sake!

SN3O0400

Another reason is that the serve pork from local pigs fed with local green tea! Talk about extravagant Shizuoka gastronomy!

SN3O0401

Not only do they serve sake from Shizuoka prefecture but also local fish and seafood!

SN3O0402

They are certainly a working hard lot even at lunch and no holidays!

SN3O0293

It is always a good idea to reserve especially at night!
If you come alone sitting at the counter is probably best!

SN3O0292

Large groups will feel more comfortable sitting on the tatami floor! But it can become very noisy!

SN3O0291

But there are plenty of tables and chairs for small groups! Note the walls decorated with sake brewery aprons!

SN3O0294

Have a look at all the sake in the fridge! The staff, if not too busy, will have the pleasure to explain their origin!

SN3O0404

If you come to taste as many sake as possible the best solution is to order a 3 sake tasting set for only 800 yen!
The bottles will be brought onto your table and you are welcome to take photographs!

SN3O0405

Each bottle being explicitly numbered, the number of the brewery you wish to taste will be written on your sake tasting set paper!

SN3O0406

Splendid system if you want to report on the tasting!

SN3O0407

O-toshi/snack coming with first drink!

SN3O0408

Beautiful sashimi plate with fish and seafood from Shizuoka Prefecture! Great value!

SN3O0411

Of course Shizuoka oden is a regular dish all year round! Note that are seasoned the Shizuoka way with “aonori”! Shizuoka oden are darker than the ones found in other prefectures!

SN3O0412

And more sake!
Actually, I’m planning to conduct some sake tastings there in the future!

SN3O0413

Don’t forget to order the tea pork! Great comfort food for the meat lovers!

SN3O0414

Very generous portions with yakitori, including my favorite, “tsukune”/minced meat ball!!

Expect regular visits in the future!

Kyoto Yakitori Izakaya: Tsuki Tokage Honten!

Service: Very friendly and informative
Facilities and equipment: Beautifully traditional. Very clean overall. beautiful washroom
Prices: reasonable considering the quality
Strong points: Yakitori and charcoal grilled food. Excellent selection of sake!

SN3O0057

“Tokage” does mean “lizard” in Japanese but they are not serving it there, although it makes for such an interesting name!

SN3O0058

Although they have moved address since, it was our second visit and we found it by accident due to the reason explained! Very beautiful but unpretentious decor. Very warm and comfortable!

SN3O0059

They even have a view on a small garden you have to cross (that is for gentlemen as the washrooms are separated) when needs are pressing!

SN3O0064

Young, friendly but professional staff who are happy to answer your questions.
They even introduced me to an izakaya in Susono City, Eastern Shizuoka!

SN3O0060

They do have some superb sake from Kyoto, a fact which is not evident in spite of the great number of breweries!
