Young Nihonga Artist: Kyoko Imagawa/今川教子 (from Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City)!

IMAGAWA-KYOKO-4

Nihonga (日本画 Nihonga) or literally “Japanese-style paintings” are paintings that have been made in accordance with traditional Japanese artistic conventions, techniques and materials. While based on traditions over a thousand years old, the term was coined in the Meiji period of the Imperial Japan, to distinguish such works from Western-style paintings, or Yōga (洋画 Yōga).

Nihonga are typically executed on washi (Japanese paper) or eginu (silk), using brushes. The paintings can be either monochrome or polychrome. If monochrome, typically sumi (Chinese ink) made from soot mixed with a glue from fishbone or animal hide is used. If polychrome, the pigments are derived from natural ingredients: minerals, shells, corals, and even semi-precious stones like malachite, azurite and cinnabar. The raw materials are powdered into 16 gradations from fine to sandy grain textures. A hide glue solution, called nikawa, is used as a binder for these powdered pigments. In both cases, water is used; hence nihonga is actually a water-based medium. Gofun (powdered calcium carbonate that is made from cured oyster, clam or scallop shells) is an important material used in nihonga. Different kinds of gofun are utilized as a ground, for under-painting, and as a fine white top color.

Initially, nihonga were produced for hanging scrolls (kakemono), hand scrolls (emakimono) or folding screens (byōbu). However, most are now produced on paper stretched onto wood panels, suitable for framing. Nihonga paintings do not need to be put under glass. They are archival for thousands of years.

I have followed the progress of Imagawa Kyoko/今川教師子さん, a young artist born in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, for some time, attracted as I was by her original approach to the art while keeping to its traditional rules and had the pleasure to meet her again in person at Matsuzakaya Department Store (Honkan/Main Building, 6 F) during her latest exhibition held February 24th~March 1st.
For all her young age she is already an 11-year veteran of that demanding art (see personal history end of the article) but she is so modest and easy to approach that it becomes a real pleasure talking art with her!

Like many modern Nihonga artists she has brought her own techniques and preferences to her art, rendering it attractive to all genders, ages and nationalities.
I definitely plan to interview her again soon in her atelier in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, but for a start let me show some of my favorite masterpieces before they disappear from our City as the exhibition was also quite successful!
I will not bother too much their individual names, but concentrate on my personal opinions and feelings!

I mentioned her the English saying of insects burning themselves to death on the light of candles, and Kayoko nodded in agreement! Now, who could be those butterflies dangerously fluttering near electric cables?

She explained that this particular exhibition’s purpose was to express her will to enjoy life through our ever-changing modern society of our age.
Her paintings are songs expressing her life in different seasons and places.

When i pointed that the shirt was man’s garment she readily agreed but surprised me by revealing that the butterfly was a brooch!

Now, tea flowers will nly be painted by the Japanese as growers leave some on the tea bushes in Shizuoka Prefecture contrary to tea plantations in the rest of the world!

Now, this cat has a real story! Kayoko picked it up a few months old on a street where it had been hit by a car! A very healthy animal now!

Bestiary at Sengen Shrine in Shizuoka City!

Shinto shrines in Japan, especially the big ones, are hosts to a whole menagerie or bestiary, that is “animals” which are supposed to symbolize or protect the cult abode.
In Shizuoka City, the large Sengen Shrine is a good place to look for them!

They even lurk in Buddhist temples!

Kyoto Pavement Art

Like in every city in Japan yu should have a god look at the pavements of Kyoto City, although they are remakably from this of other cities!

Wall Painting: Food & Tourism on Water Tank in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

The other day I was cycling along a street parallel to the Miho Beach in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, when I espied this unusual water tank!

It stood practically in the middle of a small farm!
Interesting way to advertise Shimizu Ku.
Actually the area is quite remarkable for quite a few similar sights!

I knew that Shimizu was noted for its strawberries and oranges, but I didn’t know about roses!

Cucumbers and the local JA?Japan Agriculture Office, which is probably advertising itself!

The very farm it stood by grew edamame!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 34: Along the Miho Beach, Shimizu ku, Shizuoka City!

I have already mentioned manhole cob\evrs in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City.
This is a very large area indeed and it tends to mix all kinds of covers since it was merged with Shizuoka City.
But if like me yesterday you happened to cycle along the Miho Beach, especially along the parallel streets running through urban parts you will find them concentrated in large numbers!

Houtaiji Temple in Shizuoka City: Unusual Sights

As an agnostic I avoid the subject of religion as much as I can.
But that does not prevent me to consider the historical and cultural side of it as long as it has to offer interesting photography!

Just I walked past Houtai Temple/宝泰寺 founded in 1381 in the name of Houtaizen temple, I noticed the side portal open. I decided to take a peek!

I was first tempted to take photographs of the garden, but I noticed some strange/unusual statues!

There were a lot of small statues in pairs, so they must be all symbolic.

Sights at Hamana Lake Flower Garden in Hamamatsu City!

We spent no less than 4 hours inside the enormous Flower Garden in Hamamatsu city and took more than 180 picture!
I am not going to complete as this allows me to write a series of articles on different themes!

Kura: Japanese Traditional Warehouses in Shizuoka Prefecture 15: Ieyama, Shimada City!

“Kura” (in Japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditional Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

i discovered this small but well-preserved kura in Ieyama, a famous small hot spring resort along the Oigawa Railway Line in Shmada City.
It belongs to the Suzuki Family who had a sake brewery called Suzuki Brewery there until 1940 until they had to close it due to WWII. They never resumed the brewing of sake but they kept the kura all the time.

It still has a “namako” design on its lower hall.
It is basically empty now, but the owners keep it into good repair!

The wall facing the road had to be protected with corrugated iron though.
But the windows are nicely up-kept!

Cherry Blossoms-Mizuochi Police Box, Aoi Ku, ShIzuoka City!

“Of all places!”, you might say and I tend to agree as the occupants of MIzuochi Police Box in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, are famously hopeless in a city where’s crime is almost inexistent and where the police is reduced to lurk on bicycles behind large signs to catch traffic offenders!

I didn’t include the police box in my pictures lest its denizens use it as a proof of my malfeasance!

The Mizuochi Police Box is located at the corner of Kitakaido Street and the Eastern Wall of Sumpu Castle Park.
There you can admire the wall and part of its moat.

It is a great spot right now for cherry blossoms visewing, although it will last only a few days especially with rain forecast tomorrow!

The trees are perched on top of the wall and cascade down to the moat!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 33: Kanbara, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

Kanbara, located between Yui and Shin kambara in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, was merged into Shizuoka City on March 1st, 2006, but Shimizu City became part of Shizuoka City as Shimizu Ku on April 1st, 2004.
On the other hand Yui merged with Shimizu Ku into Shizuoka City only on November 1st, 2008 with some confusing results when it comes to manhole covers!
Soon or later, especially after I have covered Shin Kanbara, I will have to to publish a compilation of only the truly decorated manhole covers in the whole of Shizuoka City, and that is mor than 2 dozens of them!

This is the most representative fire hydrant manhole cover of Kanabara. Even though, the crest is that of Yui, but the mark/first kanji/蒲 of Kanbara is included!

It is often found together with a water valve pit!

This pattern exists elsewhere but it is inscribed with “Kanbara Town”!

This beautiful fire hydrant cover is actually a Shizuoka City item, therefore quite recent!

This cover reflects the confusion. It is a soccer fire hydrant manhole cover from Shimizu City before it was merged into Shizuoka City, which could have been set either before or after the merger!

This water valve pit being very recent it tends to prove that the Shimizu City covers were later used in Shimizu Ku which includes Kanbara Town as it was called before the merger!

Cherry Blossoms At Last Blooming in Shizuoka City!

The cherry blossoms are at last beginning to bloom, at least some varieties, in Shizuoka City!

As far I can figure out at least two varieties are blooming, although it could be the same one!

These can be found in the vicinity of Sumpu Castle in Shzuoka City, although the variety grown over the ramparts are different and out yet!

the weather has been and is still pretty bad this month and the blooming is definitely late compared to last year!
It is actually a blessing in disguise as the Shizuoka City Festival will take place next week!
last year the cherry blossoms had disappeared by then!

Walking around the mount you will discover some real old trees on the “city side” of the street!

Incidentally, did you know that all the cherry trees offered by Japan to the United States during the Meiji Era originated from one single tree in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City?

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 32: Kanaya, Shimada City!

Decorated manhole covers all seem to be those of fire hydrants in Kanaya Cho in Shimada City, although there is a big oddity!

Big red fire truck. This design can be found in many cites in side and outside Shizuoka Prefecture although the “city crest” will be different!

This must a fairly recent cover as the crest is that of Shimada City to which Kanaya was recently merged!

Interestingly enough this one was donated by the City of Ise in Mie Prefecture!
