Shinshuu Ootaniha Daishin Kaizan Myoushyouji Temple (真宗大谷派大心海山明照寺) in Shizunami, Makinohara City!

The other day as I walked towards Shizunami beach from Shizunami bus station I noticed this Buddhist Temple along the way.
As I had plenty of time on hand and I was looking for some momentary shade from the blazing sun i decided to have a look around!

SN3O0044

Contrary to Shinto shrines Buddhist temples have long names!
Shinshuu Ootaniha Daishin Kaizan Myoushyouji Temple or 真宗大谷派大心海山明照寺!

SN3O0045

In the countryside the difference between temples and shrines is tenuous in architecture and facilities.
For example a hand washing stone basin is not that common in Buddhist Temples.

SN3O0046

Now, this bell tower is typical of a Buddhist temple!

SN3O0047

Lion guards also rend to of a different kind!

SN3O0048

Certainly more elaborate!

SN3O0050

And probably more gentle-looking!

SN3O0049

The crest of the temple!

SN3O0059

Grateful for the shade and the greenery!

SN3O0051

Very old cicada tree, indeed!

SN3O0052

The temple crest again!

SN3O0053

Dragons don’t seem to worry about the creed!

SN3O0054

A slightly mocking dragon!

SN3O0055

A leery dragon?

SN3O0057

Fine figurines on the splendid roofs!

SN3O0058

What is their purpose?

SN3O0056

back on the road…

Kyoto: Toufuku Temple & Gardens

You don’t have to visit Buddhist Temples in Japan because of religion.
An agnostic hedonist like myself can find many reasons to enjoy their visit.
It was the first time I had the occasion to look at Toufuku Shrine which renown for its beautiful gardens!

SN3O0237

Even inside Kyoto City it is surrounded by a lot of greenery!

SN3O0239

Through the main gate!

SN3O0240

Almost the whole of the Buddhist temple and its annexes were burnt down in a big fire last century and to be rebuilt as an exact copy!

SN3O0241

Imposing roofed walk!

SN3O0242

The main temple is surrounded by quite a few smaller ones!

SN3O0243

Beautiful roofs!

SN3O0244

The main temple built around its own gardens!

SN3O0262

Check the gardens history!

SN3O0263

Have a good look at the flowers around you before entering the temple!

SN3O0269

Irises!

SN3O0270

The main gate before the actual temple!

SN3O0271

A venerable tree!

SN3O0247

The first garden made of stones, sand and moss!

SN3O0245

Can you imagine the water swirling around the stones!

SN3O0260

Ancient and mysterious stones!

SN3O0258

From another angle!

SN3O0259

The land represented by the moss!

SN3O0246

Another tucked away garden!

SN3O0261

One of the buildings enclosing the garden!

SN3O0257

Moving to the next garden!

SN3O0255

Getting near!

SN3O0254

Going through one more garden!

SN3O0248

At this point you enter an unusual garden!

SN3O0249

This particular garden was completed in 1939!

SN3O0253

A very rare checkered Japanese garden!

SN3O0251

A last look before we take our leave!

Houtaiji Temple in Shizuoka City: Unusual Sights

As an agnostic I avoid the subject of religion as much as I can.
But that does not prevent me to consider the historical and cultural side of it as long as it has to offer interesting photography!

SN3O0226

Just I walked past Houtai Temple/宝泰寺 founded in 1381 in the name of Houtaizen temple, I noticed the side portal open. I decided to take a peek!

SN3O0227

I was first tempted to take photographs of the garden, but I noticed some strange/unusual statues!

SN3O0217

There were a lot of small statues in pairs, so they must be all symbolic.
A child preventing his “mount” to see?

SN3O0219

Disappearing into eternity or going back to it?

SN3O0220

Now, what is that dachshund doing here?

SN3O0221

A fetus position and a stretching position?

SN3O0222

Shaking Hands?

SN3O0223

Wishing to become a teddy bear!

SN3O0224

Shyness?

SN3O0228

Worry?

SN3O0233

This is quite unusual for a Buddhist temple and more readily found in Shinto Shrines: Tokugawa ieaysu’s Crest!

SN3O0229

A goblin on the roof/

SN3O0230

Dragons?

SN3O0232

Even tiny ones?

Mangazan Koji in Ieyama, Shimada City: The Only Temple in Japan Dedicated to Human Feet!

If you have the opportunity to get off one of the Oigaway Ralway Line trains in Ieyama, Hon Kawane, Shimada City, you will find a great oddity a few minutes walk from the walk from the Station!

SN3O0043

Mangazan Kouji Temple!
It actually, like many similar places in Japan combines both Buddhism adn Shinto as both temple and shrine were built on the same spot!
This particular Temple was built in 1346, around 650 years ago !

SN3O0042

This is the sole Buddhist Temple in Japan consecrated to the health of human feet!
But there is more to see there than this particular concern of the human atanomy!

SN3O0045

Beware that guardian!

SN3O0046

His companion is not be taken lightly either!

SN3O0047

The lion guardians had something unusual about them!

SN3O0050

It is the first time I find such lions with a mouth painted red!

SN3O0051

Incidentally, such lion guardians bear a diffrent “grin”!

SN3O0048

The temple also has a real Kyudou/Japanese archery shooting range at the back!

SN3O0049

With all the water rushing down the mountain, rain or no rain, this is a very clean place!

SN3O0052

The Buddhist bell!

SN3O0053

Centenarian cedar trees everywhere!

SN3O0054

For such a little place the way out is grandiose!

SN3O0055

In search of Japanese history and culture!

Expect more soon!
