Kinomiya Shrine (木宮神社) in Atami City!

KINOMIYA-2

Kinomiya Shrine/木宮神社 i Atami City is a bit of a long but pleasant walk from the JR station, but it is certainly worthwhile the effort as it includes a first in the whole of Japan!

KINOMIYA-3

The torii/sacred entrance is actually the entrance to a main and many small shrines due to the size and the age of the site!

It has its own shrine/altar!

KINOMIYA-28

Now, how old can it be?

KINOMIYA-29

The oldest Camphor tree in Japan!
No less than 2,000 years of age!
Incidentally “camphor tree” is “Kusu no ki/楠” in Japanese!
As for this particular tree Japan has given it the titlle of “Oo kusu/大楠/Great Camphor Tree”!
Actually tis “cavity” is venerated as a symbol of fertility!

KINOMIYA-30

Majestic!

KINOMIYA-31

A fully grown man can stand inside the cavity!

KINOMIYA-32

Water running down from nearby mountains!

KINOMIYA-33

Niihashi Sengen Shrine (新橋神社) in Gotemba City!

The other day I had the occasion to spend a day in Gotemba City and took the opportunity to visit its main Shinto Shrine, namely Niihashi Sengen Shrine/新橋浅間神社!

NNIBASHI-2

It is a big shrine indeed with the full regalia, including these ancient stone lanterns at the very entrance marked by the first torii gate!

NNIBASHI-7

A long (by Shizuoka standards) stone-paved lane leads to the shrine!

NNIBASHI-8

The second toriii gate!

NNIBASHI-3

The first pair of komainu/lion guards is pretty ancient!

NNIBASHI-4

It has its forepaw settled atop a young lion, a bit unusual although I have found a few such in Shizuoka Prefecture!

NNIBASHI-5

What is unusual is that his companion also has a paw rested atop a younger lion guard!

NNIBASHI-6

I wonder why someone has put a shell on both pedestals?

NNIBASHI-9

The place even has a small pond with sacred carps!

NNIBASHI-10

The roofed hand washing stone basin!

NNIBASHI-12

Complete with a dragon water spout!

NNIBASHI-13

Another small shrine behind the stone basin!

NNIBASHI-14

Quite a few cherry trees were stating blooming inside the shrine grounds!

NNIBASHI-15

The haiden/shrine for the worshipers!

NNIBASHI-16

Usually this type of building is used either as a stage for the shrine festival or as a storeroom for portable shrines!

NNIBASHI-17

The closed-mouth lion guard!

NNIBASHI-18

With its forepaw atop a young lion guard!

NNIBASHI-19

Its open-mouthed companion!

NNIBASHI-20

But with its paw resting upon a sphere!
I’ve already noticed that same lion guards combination at an old shrine in Shizuoka City, but it a bit unusual!

NNIBASHI-21

Another view!

NNIBASHI-22

I actually found these two lions are very new!
The design of their tails is certainly modern!

NNIBASHI-23

More cherry blossoms!

NNIBASHI-24

The water from this sacred source comes directly from nearby Mount Fuji!

NNIBASHI-25

The honden/worshipers’ hall!

NNIBASHI-26

With its shimenawa/rice straw garland!

NNIBASHI-27

The pinion!

NNIBASHI-28

The money-offerings box!

NNIBASHI-29

Moving to the haiden/deity abode behind the honden!

NNIBASHI-30

The haiden with its roofed corridor!

NNIBASHI-31

Regularly repainted!

NNIBASHI-32

Overlooked by ancient cedar trees!

NNIBASHI-33

Made a point to taste the water f the sacred source before leaving! Beautiful water, actually! No wonder people gather to collect a lot of it!

NNIBASHI-34

Good-bye Niihashi sengen Shrine!

Quaint Okina Inari Daimyoujin Shrine (翁稲荷大明神) in Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City

OKINA-2

If you take the first street right of Shizuoka JR Station that runs past the Post Office and under the railway tracks you will enter the south side of Shizuoka City, that is Suruga Ku. keep walking straight ahead and 5 minutes later you will find these red pennants along the left hand side of the pavement!

OKINA-3

For all their garish grandiloquence they only announce the presence of a small Shinto Shrine called Okina Inari Daimyoujin Shrine (翁稲荷大明神). The reason I decided to have a look at it is that my good friend, Atsuko Kurata who is always on the lookout for unusual sites signaled to me through Facebook!

OKINA-4

The red torii/鳥居/Shrine Entrance Portal!

OKINA-5

An unusual way to advertise a Shinto Shrine the way they used to do for private shops in Japan of yore!

OKINA-6

All kinds of invitations written on the paper flying in the wind!

OKINA-7

Inari Shinto Shrines are always guarded by foxes. Herds of them in this particular case!

OKINA-8

On both sides!
Note the metal braziers used as supports for the votive messages!

OKINA-9

I wouldn’t criticize you for taking this shrine for a local shop!

OKINA-10

The roof pinion could be used either in a Buddhist Temple or a Shinto Shrine!

OKINA-11

Now, this antique komainu/狛犬/lion guard came from under the roof of another shrine or temple!

OKINA-12

A real bric a brac on the west hand side of the shrine!

OKINA-13

Now, this is an exceedingly unusual stone hand washing basin!

OKINA-15

Why all these traditional Japanese water tubs?

OKINA-16

A tiny inari shrine!

OKINA-17

The prayer bell and its rope and the money-offerings box!

OKINA-18

It looks like an antique than anything else!

OKINA-19

Actually the lady owning and looking after the whole place kindly let me take pictures of the inside!

OKINA-20

All kinds of offerings from neighboring followers among a jumble that still looks like an antique dealer’s dream!
Actually traditional Japanese dancing plays are also held inside!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

Wata (also called “Mizu”) Shinto Shrine-水神社 in Shizuoka City!

Yesterday on my way to Anzai Bridge across the Abe River in Shizuoka City, I decided to cycle along a die road on a whim and discovered this small Shinto shrine in Ta Machi!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-2

Upon seeing the name plaque on the torii/sacred gate I wondered how the kanji for “water/水”, that is “mizu” would be pronounced.
Luckily enough a neighbor had just come out and I decided to ask him and get some more information!
The locals pronounce the name “wata”!
And apparently it is a very old if small shrine, dating back to Edo Era!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-3

Although their roofing is recent the hand washing stone basin are very ancient.
Two of them in such a small shrine is indeed rare and the neighbor indicated me through their engravings that they had been erected in totally different eras!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-4

Two large stone lanterns and two smaller ones stood along the short path with mountain and clouds carvings!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-5

I noted an interesting difference between the two deers!
The one above has its right foreleg raised!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-6

But not this one!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-7

A smaller stone lantern between two venerable trees!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-8

The “haiden”/worshipers hall!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-9

Unusually the lion guards/shishi are not represented as stone statues, but as wooden carvings abovehead!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-10

Its companion!
I pointed out the fact to the kind neighbor relating the history of the shrine and I had the pleasure to notice his surprise!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-11

Money offerings are unusually thrown though the door instead of inside a box placed outside!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-12

Side view of the “haiden” and “honden/deity abode”!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-13

The enshrined deity is male!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-14

A side view of the completely isolated “haiden”!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-15

The trees inside the shrine are dwarfing the building proving its ancient origins!

WATA-MIZU-JINJYA-16

Good-bye, Wata Shrine!

Chikatsu Sengen Shrine (千勝浅間神社) in Shizuoka City!

Suruga Ku, south of Shizuoka JR Station, is an area replete with small ancient shrines due to its proximity to the sea.
I discovered another one of them while cycling around Minami Cho and Imagawa Cho: Chikatsu Segen Shrine/千勝浅間神社!

SN3O0804
SN3O0804

Although a bit derelict some parts have been renewed and are looked after a kannushi/神主/Shinto priest living in his own private house on the very premises of the shrine!

SN3O0805
SN3O0805

The view past the torii entrance gate!

SN3O0806
SN3O0806

There are still some old trees towering over it!

SN3O0807
SN3O0807

The main shrine!

SN3O0818
SN3O0818

It was rebuilt in 1875 but dates far more back into the past!

SN3O0808
SN3O0808

Two smaller brand new shrines have been added!

SN3O0823
SN3O0823

Kotogara Jinja/金刀比羅神社! It might be related to the one existing in Fujieda City!

SN3O0824
SN3O0824

But its door panels are really ancient!

SN3O0825
SN3O0825

Akiba Jinja/秋葉神社!

SN3O0826
SN3O0826

The money offering box is new but its lock is old!
I suspect that these two “new” shrines had been here all the time and have been repainted only recently!

SN3O0809

One of the two stone lanterns!

On the right side can be found a far smaller and more ancient shrine with a few red torii gates!

SN3O0820
SN3O0820

The small shrine!

SN3O0821
SN3O0821

Although the red paint is flaking out the torii are still recent. They were gifted by local worshipers!

SN3O0822

Moss has been gathering on the site!

SN3O0827

Good-bye, Chikatsu Sengen Shrine!

The other day I actually spent 3 hours waling from Sakurabashi Station, Shizutetsu line to Shin Shimizu Station circling around under the very mountains. before crossing Route 1 to turn back to the latter station I discovered the entrance of that particular shrine at the bottom of a lonely “hill”.
