Mishima City, after a long dormancy following the bubble era seems to steadily enter a new era with new restaurants, bars and shops to cater for an increasing touristic clientele thanks to the nearby Mount Fuji and many more attractions.
It is a city where, if you keep one eye on the pavement and anther above head, you can make some interesting discoveries!
The latest one for my part is a single side of a single street lined up with a series of shop signs, some directly inspired by many found in Europe displayed in obvious cooperation!

Mishima Taisha Shrine (三島大社) 1)

One of the venerated trees inside Mishima Tasiha!

Mishima Taisha/Mishima Great Shrine in the City of Mishima is one oone of the 3~4 biggest and most important Shinto shrines in Shizuoka Prefecture and it is simply too vast and comprising too many other shrines to be described i a single article.
This the first of a series of reports as I plan to visit Mishima City many times again in the near future and take the opportunities to discover other aspects and sights!

The main portal with its enormous “shimenawa/rice straw garland”!

The big mouth-shut “komainu or shishi/lion guard” past the main entrance!

And its companion with its mouth open!

One of the main small shrines find in the precincts, this particular one called “Shima Jinja” at the end of a small bridge crossing one of the many ponds!

A large roof pinion!

A large roofed hand washing stone basin!

Another large inner portal!

Th Horse is the main feature animal symbol in Mishima Taisha!

The “haiden hall” for the public and worshippers!

Splendid gilded pinions!

One of the big “baku/nightmare eaters”!

An ancient “ishidourou/stone lantern”!

“Spiky Lawn” by Bruno Maroni in Mishima City!

If you have the chance to visit Mishima City in the eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture I would recommend you to visit the Clematis Gardens, the more for it that they offfer a free limousine service from and to Mishima JR Station!

The Gardens include a large museum showing the works of Bruno Maroni but his most remarkable creations are exhibited all year round in the very large park either on the luscious lawns or in front of other buildings!

What could a lone man do walking through pikes on a lawn?

The grass is integral part of the whole art work!

Is the man carefully walking in awe?

Or is he half containing his laugh?

Or has he found a new world beyond the grassy spike tunnel?

Italian Gastronomy: Lunch at Cafe Akko in Mishima City!

Service: Shy but friendly and attentive
Equipment & Facilities: Extremely clean overall. Beautiful washroom.
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Slow and healthy Italian gastronomy created mostly with local products!

The people in Mishima City are very lucky as they are surrounded with fielads and gardens that supply them with fresh (many organic) vegetables (and meat) all year round!
Cafe Akko is one of the many great little places in town that offer very healthy, reasonable and slow food.

It has been conceived in an unusual all length and narrowness to take advatntage of whatever space available. And it is so clean!

Lunch is particularly interesting as you can choose from no less than 7 set lunches. although you may choose a single item from the carte if available for lunch!

Dragon who planned to share hers and especially my order, chose a single item: “Kimagure salad/Chef’s salad of the Day”!

Enormous as you can see from the other side!
So many vegetables and pieces of fine meat, practically all local!
A full meal by itself, I can assure you!

As for me I chose (and shared!) the seafood lasagna lunch set!

Apart of a complimentary coffee it is served with home-made focaccia,

potage,

And a cute salad!

An artistic and so tasty lasagna!

The lasagna was prepare as a large round one before being cut into quarters.
Each quarter is then baked upon order and serve with a tasty but light tomato sauce.

It is also brought to you with grated parmesan cheese and home-made basil paste.
The lasagna itself is not only so tasty but a lot lighter than expected!

Cute little home-made biscuits served with coffee!

Scarab by Bernard Buffet in Mishima City!

If you visit Mishima City in the Eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture you ought to visit The Clematis Garden and the Bernard Buffet Museum in one single trip as they are very near each other.
You will be surprised at the amount of art on show!

It was brought to japan all the way to Mishima as it had been created in 1975 some time before Bernard Buffet came to establish himself in Mishima City!

You will see this enormous scarab statue by Bernard Buffet who also painted the same on a big canvas on show inside the Museum (no pictures allowed there unfortunately but definitely worth a grand visit!

For the railway and train buffs!

The other day as I was going to board my train to Izu Nagaoka on the local private Izu Hakone railway Line in Mishima Station I noticed a new sign at the front:
“富士山文化遺産登録”: “Mount Fuji World Cutrl Heritage Registration”!

The last stop of this particular line is “修善寺”/”Shuzenji”.
Apart of the evident attraction to railway buffs I definitely recommend you ride this line which will show you so much of Izu Peninsula!

I took this picture yesterday before enjoying a bottle of sake brewed by Fujinishiki Brewery (Fujinomiya City) while having a bath inside a private outdoors tub at Yoshiharu Hot Spring Resort in Izu Peninsula!
