Italian/French Gastronomy: Dinner at Kuraya Kato in Mochimune, Shizuoka City!

Service: Shy but very kind and attentive
Equipment and facilities: Overall extremely clean. Superb washroom. Entirely non-smoking
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: superlative Italian/cuisine making use of many local products!
Short but excellent wine lists at reasonable prices.

The name Kuraya Kato means that the restaurant was created by his owner/che3f, Mr. Kato, inside an ancient “kura/Japanese storehouse”, probably one of the biggest still existing in Shizuoka Prefecture!
It is actually of rare dimensions and the inside is simply spacious and beautifully redecorated conserving as much its original cachet as possible with all amenities, all wood and white walls. A very special place whose atmosphere is enough to invite you ther anytime. But the cuisine is simply extravagant, although at very reasonable prices!

Great attention to the olive oil and butter!
The table service is beautiful in its seemingly simplicity and helps you relax from the very moment you sit down at your table.
Bear in mind that all meals must be reserved in advance, but the place will open even for a single guest!

So comfortable in soft light surrounded by real wood!

A lot of attention attached to small details, making the difference!
Menus (to be decided on the phone or else while reserving) are based on full courses at varying prices. We opted for the 6,000 yen dinner, but you can require for more, citing your likes or dislikes!

Since Mochimune is a noted fishing harbor famous all over Japan expect some great fish for the starters!

Excellent sparkling wine for the occasion!

All bread is baked onsite!

Second starters!

Beautiful and elegant pasta (remember it is a starter back in Italy!)!

Unusual, reasonable and delicious red wine!

More home-baked bread!

First main dish: Shizuoka seabream sauteed with basil sauce, Italian style!

Second main dish: Shizuoka wagyu steak! No need to comment!

Beautiful classic dessert assortment combining French and Italian cuisines!

And coffee served as it should be!

Definitely among the very best in Shizuoka Prefecture!

Italian Gastronomy: Dinner at Soloio in Shizuoka City (June 2016)!

SOLOIO-THE-TEAM

The Team!
Chef Takehiko Katoh/加藤武彦さん/Sommelier Mieko Osawa/小澤三江子さん

Service: Pro and very friendly
Equipment & Facilities: Great overall cleanliness and superb washroom. Entirely non-smoking!
Prices: Reasonable considering the quality
Strong points: Fresh local ingredients whenever possible. Both traditional and inventive Italian cuisine. Good wine list at moderate prices. Open late!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-A2

Time goes fast and I hadn’t realized I hadn’t visited my favorite Italian Restaurant in Shizuoka City, namely Soloio, for almost a year!
It certainly was time to make amends and enjoy some classics and new dishes concocted by Chef Takehiko Katoh/加藤武彦さん!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-A4

The setting has somewhat changed for even better!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-A5

You certainly won’t mind a stiff neck reading out some of the specials of the day overhead!

So, what did we have?

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-A3

Plenty of wine of course, but we started with a glass of this brilliant sparkling wine: Chardonnay “Le Vacanze” by Cantina d’Autore in the Veneto Region!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-1

Skillet-grilled aubergines/eggplants and duck raw ham salad!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-2a

Wild boar (caught in Mikkabi, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture) terrine!
I would come any day just for that!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-3

Shizuoka prefecture madai/seabream carpaccio!
The vegetables include uri/gourd!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-a

Chef Takehiko Katoh/加藤武彦さん creates the best risotto in the whole Prefecture and the above one was no exception with Umbria summer truffles!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-e

Little jewels!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-5

A superb dish not on the menu!
Shizuoka Prefecture tachiuo/scabbard fish (also called cutlass fish) cooked on a skillet with avocado!
A true discovery!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-6d

As we still wanted a light dish before the pasta (we have no respect for traditional order! LOL) we consulted the menu of the day again!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-6

Chicken thigh Rotoro/Rolled chicken thigh and stuffed with figs, marinated mushrooms and canederulli in carupione fashion/white-fleshed fish balls!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-7

The pasta!
Spaghetti Bolonese with beef stew sauce!

SOLOIO-JUNE-16-7c

By that time we were full but just for the fun we had a tiny dessert consisting of very sweet Shizuoka corn grilled on a skillet!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

French Winter Lunch at Chez Mont-Pierre in Shizuoka City!

Service: Very friendly, accommodating and helpful
Equipment & Facilities: Superb cleanliness overall. Extravagant washroom. Entirely non-smoking. Separate room for families with children.
Prices: Very reasonable considering the quality and generosity
Strong points: High class Classical French gastronomy with a modern and inventive touch. Excellent wine list.

As I said before, Shizuoka City is divided into 3 distinct wards, Aoi Ku, Suruga Ku, and Shimizu Ku. Suruga Ku south of Shizuoka JR Station is rapidly evolving into a gastronomic area to provide for a growing population and palliate for the congested Aoi Ku north of Shizuoka JR Station.

Yesterday Bernard Heberlé, owner-chef pâtissier at Abondance in Hamamatsu City came to visit me in Shizuoka City and I thought it a good opportunity to introduce him to one of the few great restaurants he hadn’t visited in our town yet!

SN3O0049

He actually had a great time deciphering the menu both written in French and Japanese.
Chez Mont-Pierre offers three different lunch courses and wine by the glass for lunch.
We opted for the medium menu which I knew would be more than enough even at the reasonable price!

His restaurant, KAWASAKI Restaurant, stands along Aoba Park Street in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, an area finally starting to fulfill its potential.

SN3O0052

The last time we visited our favorite Italian Restaurant Solio was in July!
It seems we have barely the time to visit it every season!

SN3O0053

It was so great to rediscover Chef Takehiko Katoh/加藤武彦さん’s Autumn classics!
Here we go!

SN3O0054

Scabbard Fish (also called sword fish), tachiuo/太刀魚 in Japanese and Autumn eggplants firtters with anchovy sauce!

SN3O0055

Scabbard fish has a delicate white flesh and can be enjoyed raw, seared and cooked in many fashions!

SN3O0056

We are lucky enough in Shizuoka to obtain it from our own harbors!

SN3O0057

Banya cauda vegetables!

SN3O0058

In my own view the healthiest way to savor vegetables in Italian gastronomy!

SN3O0059

All vegetables grown in Shizuoka or japan for the best teaceability!
Some of them really exotic!

SN3O0060

A soup you will have trouble to find in Italy!
Chilled burdock root soup!

SN3O0062

But now this is a classical sup from Toscana!

SN3O0063

Ribollita!

SN3O0061

Chinese Restaurant in Kyoto: Sichifukuya!

Service: Very friendly
Equipment & facilities: Clean overall. Basic Japanese style washroom
Prices: Reasonable to slightly expansive
Strong points: Shanghai Family style cuisine. Chinese old spirits

SN3O0286

There are many Chinese restaurants in Kyoto but few are authentic.
You do have to look deep into the back streets to find them!

SN3O0285

Shichifukuya (the h\House of the Seven Lucks) is one of them, and although it was our second visit we did have some trouble finding it in the dark of the night!

SN3O0274

It was apparently a Japanese restaurant years before the present owners moved in 8 years ago, and they did change little of it. It is old but clean. But after all the food is the most important!

SN3O0273

Apparently they have a lot of regulars with their own bottles!

SN3O0272

Soba/Buckwheat Noodles Restaurant: Kinoene in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

Service: Very kind and friendly
Facilities: and equipment: Old but very clean overall. Excellent washroom
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Soba/buckwheat noodles and Japanese tradkional meals. Some very good local sake available!

SN3O0353

With two friends of mine, I have the opportunity to visit an old and traditional soba/buckwheat noodles restaurant in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, not far from Kusanagi JR Station: Kinouene!

SN3O0363

They are actually associated to an old association!

SN3O0362

Looking forward to seeing some flowers blooming next time!

SN3O0354

I espied some great sake! Pity it was lunch time or I wouldn’t have resisted their call!

SN3O0355

So traditional!

SN3O0356

One of my friends ordered “ebiten soba/hot soba with deep-fried large prawns”!

SN3O0357

My other friend opted for one of the full Japanese\ lunch sets!

SN3O0357

Plentiful and healthy!
The more for it we eat in an environment totally void of smoke! Actually not so many soba restaurants prohibit smoking!

SN3O0358

As for me I opted for the “Kamo seiro”!
Cold soba with hot duck soup!

SN3O0359

Very tasty soba!

SN3O0358

You dip the soba into the great duck soup before eating them and enjoy the slices of duck in between before drinking up everything!

See you there again, you bet!

Not only my expats friends, but many Japanese friends have been at pains at finding restaurants, bars and cafes where they wouldn’t have to put up with the hazards and stink of smoke inhaled and expelled by uncaring customers.
Some time ago I mentioned partially non-smoking restaurants but I see little point to mention them unless the entirely non-smoking times are clearly announced and respected!

This is of course not an exhaustive list, but it will be regularly updated as I visit establishments for work!
There is no special order to this list, they come as they come!

One more important point: Non-smoking is not the only criterion, good food is, too!
If you are kind enough to recommend me restaurants not introduced here it will be my pleasure to survey them!

Fish Deep-fried in Kadaif, Spinach Fettucine and Fresh Tomatoes ta BLUE BOOKS cafe in Shizuoka City!

Service: Very friendly, smiling and attentive
Equipment & Facilities: Great overall cleanliness. Superb washroom in same building separated from the cafe.
Prices: Reasonable for such big servings!
Strong points: Very generous cafe/bistro multi-genred gastronomy. Great variety. Great products. Entirely non-smoking in very modern atmosphere. Great books!

SN3O0177

Notwithstanding the quaint English translation I found an interesting concept in BLUE BOOKS cafe’s lunch menu the other day:
White-fleshed fish deep-fried in kadaif! Kaidaf is also called “Angel’s hair” and is made of fine strings of translucent pasta originating from the Middle East you can easily find in Japan these days.

SN3O0178

My lunch set of the day!
Now, what did we have here?

SN3O0182

A view of the three main ingredients!

SN3O0183

Plenty of tomato and other vegetables (Shizuoka-grown) for great balance!

SN3O0184

Great spinach fettucine cooked al dente!

SN3O0179

Ammerican comfort food: corn bread!

SN3O0180

As usual fine green salad for even better balance!

SN3O0181

And plenty of tea to wash it all down!

To be continued,… You bet!

SN3O5656

there was still one basic hamburger I hadn’t put my teeth for lunch on at BLUE BOOKS cafe in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City: Avocado & Cheddar Cheese Hamburger!

SN3O5660

Simple enough in concept it still made for quite some volume!

SN3O5661

What I like about their hamburgers is the inclusion of plenty of leafy greens!
After all it is a whole meal!

SN3O5662

Big tomato slice for great balance both in design and ingredients!

SN3O5663

Thinly sliced avocado for easy eating!

SN3O5664

Strong points: Fresh local ingredients whenever possible. Both traditional and inventive Italian cuisine. Good wine list at moderate prices. Open late!

SN3O5572

When a seemingly simple dish is a discovery!

SN3O5573

One overriding reason why I patronize Solio Italian Restaurant in Shizuoka City is that Chef Takehiko Katoh/加藤武彦さん uses exclusively seasonal ingredients especially when it comes to vegetables, especially local ones or from his own garden!

SN3O5576

Chef Takehiko Katoh/加藤武彦さん uses only olive oil, salt and paper.
Cooking the vegetables in a skillet without a lid over a fire and last inside the oven helps maintain the vegetables shape, color and consistency.
A simple and sublime way to enjoy vegetables!
Incidentally it becomes a vegan dish as well!

Prices: Reasonable for such big servings!
Strong points: Very generous cafe/bistro multi-genred gastronomy. Great variety. Great products. Entirely non-smoking in very modern atmosphere. Great books!

BLUE BOOKS cafe is a great place for hamburgers, hot sandwiches, salads and books, but it is also a cafe which tries to introduce new drinks on their menu on a constant basis!
Certainly appreciable in cold winter!

SN3O5472

The best time to enjoy such drinks in middle afternoon or early evening when the place is not as crowded as usual!

SN3O5476

Time to relax!

SN3O5471

They have two new drinks on the menu these days.
The first one is N.Y. Chocolate!

SN3O5473

Intriguing and appetizing!

SN3O5474

It is a very thick hot chocolate drink topped with a marshmallow and cocoa powder!
You need a spoon to scoop it all. I mean the chocolate drink at the bottom of the cup!

SN3O5475

Of course you need the spoon to either eat the marshmallow or mix it in!

SN3O5652

The second drink is called “Two Tone”

SN3O5653

It is actually a latte with thick chocolate and expresso coffee mixed in for a double sensation!

SN3O5654

Soft whipped milk on top!

SN3O5655

Really appetizing from above!
