Equipment & Facilities: Very clean overall. Shared washroom with Cenove Department Store but very excellent. Entirely non-smoking!
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Mild but very healthy All-Chinese gastronomy

SN3O0006

When it comes to reasonable, healthy food in a clean environment Cenova Department Store in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka Citycan be a blessing even if it is crowded at times.
Dragon recommended me CHAO the other day and I paid it my first visit at lunch today.
The place was actually busy but I was ushered in with a smile and attention.
When I placed my order the waitress went as far as to inquire if I had ordered too much!
So, what did I order?

SN3O0009

A set of five dimdung/点心!

SN3O0014

Great colors!
I checked after my meal, they do not use any monosodium glutamate (MSG) or artificial coloring or seasoning!

SN3O0015

From another angle!
Very tasty and light!

SN3O0010

Umami tappuri ebichiri/Sweet and sour chili shrimps with plenty of umami!

SN3O0012

Very appetizing indeed!

SN3O0012

The shrimps tasted fresh. Very mild for such a dish but this is Japan and especially Shizuoka where people are not too keen on hot food! Fine by me!

SN3O0011

Avocado and mushrooms Tianjin omelet rice!

SN3O0016

Another good point for Chao is that they do try to offer food with a little originality. Their four dishes including avocado was a revelation!

SN3O0018

Once again so healthy and tasty!

SN3O0017

As service, egg soup made with real chicken soup!

Another visit is definitely on the cards!

I only waited two days before my second visit to Ebisu in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City as a friend of mine couldn’t wait to visit the place!
In any case I already told you I wanted to sample the rest of the menu!
Unfortunately the yakisoba were already sold out at 6:30 in the evening!

SN3O5142

The man at work!
Years of apprenticeship in Osaka and 5 ears spent in the shop his mother and he opened 5 years ago on the first floor of their abode had made him a real artist!
Very hard work in the heat actually. A job that keeps you trim!

SN3O5136

At last I had the pleasure to sample the Osaka-style Ikayaki!

SN3O5137

AS it is opened!

It is actually a kind of cuttle-fish omelette/pancake the mother makes with a very strange contraption!

SN3O5138

Plenty of pieces of cuttle fish inside!
A real comfort in the cold weather!
Actually beer cans are available at the shop, so don’t hesitate!

SN3O5139

While my friend had her takoyaki with (cold) dashi soup stock I asked a plate of plain takoyaki!

SN3O5140

I seasoned them myself with the shop’s tare sauce and white mayonnaise sauce for two different tastes!

SN3O5141

The mother must have felt in love with me as she gave us takoyaki as service!
The above is a Shizuoka and Osaka love affair as they were seasoned with dry bonito shavings, a Shizuoka specialty!

Of coSN3O5143

Of course we had to sample another takosen!
Japanese or expat you try that!

I’ll have to come back for the yakisoba soon!
Actually the place closed one hour early because all the takoyaki were sold out!
In any case I have an inkling that the son is a rocker!

Soul Food: Pork & Winter Vegetables Pot au Feu at BLUE BOOKS cafe in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5194

Service: Very friendly, smiling and attentive
Equipment & Facilities: Great overall cleanliness. Superb washroom in same building separated from the cafe.
Prices: Reasonable for such big servings!
Strong points: Very generous cafe/bistro multi-genred gastronomy. Great variety. Great products. Entirely non-smoking in very modern atmosphere. Great books!

The days have sensibly gotten colder, even here in mild Shizuoka City, and that is when you really a body and heart-comforting hot food!

SN3O5189

Not accounting for the weird grammar and the mixture of French and American this pot au feu was really tempting!

SN3O5190

Another very good value lunch set!

SN3O5191

As usual plenty of Caesar salad with local leaf vegetables for good balance!

SN3O5192

And what I had called carrot bread all the time is succulent corn bread! mea culpa! mea culpa!

SN3O5194

All the contents practically bred and grown in Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O5195

All stewed in expensive French Staub iron-wrought ware!

SN3O5196

The pork belly must have been stewed in two stages as it was as soft as “kakuni”!
Note the burdock root for a typical Japanese touch!

SN3O5197

Vegetables included cabbage, broccoli, carrot, onion, burdock root to form a succulent soup!

SN3O5198

When simple food becomes gastronomic soul food!
I’ll have it again anytime this winter!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

French Gastronomy: Lunch at Cava.K. in Kikugawa City!

SN3O5165

Bear stewed in red wine!

Service: Very friendly and attentive
Facilities & Equipment: Spotless clean overall. Superb washroom
Prices: Appropriate. Reasonable when considering quality and originality!
Strong points: Gibier/Game, the best in the Prefecture! Great use of superb local and own garden ingredients. Seasonally cured meat and ham.

SN3O5144

Cava.K. French Restaurant is lost in the mountains near green tea fields in Kikugawa City, western Shizuoka prefecture for a good reason: Chef Hiroyuki Yamaguchi/山口祐之さん wants to stay as close as possible to local hunters for best supply of game whatever the season!

SN3O5143

He also grows his own garden to supply variety to the local products!

SN3O5145

The reason he called his French Resaurant Cava.K. is twofold: “Ca va” in French means “It’s fine”. The district where the restaurant is located is called 沢水加/sabaka. When you that “K” is pronouced “ka” in French, the whole name almost sounds the same!

SN3O5148

The style of the building is certainly original in Japan, like a modern chalet!

SN3O5149

All kinds of original processed foods and presents can be purchased there, too!

SN3O5150

The specialties of the day!
If you don’t understand Japanese, don’t worry, the staff can at least tell it in French!

We came six of us that day for a business lunch. We had to skip alcohol but I can tell you that made it a feast, including game!
Alright, let’s start!

SN3O5152

Akaei ebi shrimp, Aori Ika/great reef squid, spinach (from their garden), soupe de poisson/fish soup and tuile de noir de seiche/squid ink tile.

SN3O5153

Gougere! I had some work to do, explaining all that French to my Japanese colleagues!
I didn’t take picture of the bread, but it was also home-made!

SN3O5154

Another appetizer you will be hard put to find anywhere else in Japan: smoked yamadori sasami/Yamadori Chicken breast, duck and pheasant!

SN3O5155

Another set of appetizers!

SN3O5156

Celeriac, leeks potato soup with Karugamo/duck confit from Kikugawa!

SN3O5157

Marcassin/Young wild boar a la creme, Trompettes de la Mort mushrooms, kohlrabi and pie!

SN3O5158

Shojoin turnip, shiro baigai clam, scallop, Ikawa lotus root, ikura/salmon roe!

SN3O5159

The consomme that was served then was entirely made with wild venison. The last touch was added with fennel!

SN3O5160

The fish dish!
Sole from Omaezaki, with bisque sauce. Local vegetables including Japanese echalette and native corn from Ikawa!

SN3O5151

Actually, before the start of the repast we were requested to choose a main dish from the gibier/game menu:
From top to bottom:
Karugamo/wild duck roast
Pheasant from Kikugawa Roast
Wild boar from Kawane Roast
Japanese deer from Ikawa Roast
Civet Roast (the first ever I’ve heard of it as a game dish!)
Hare from Kikugawa Roast
Asian Black Bear from Kawane stewed in red wine
Asian Black Bear from kawane Roast
Kamoshika Deer hamburger

What do you think we chose?

SN3O5162

Civet roast!
We had some great fun sharing all these dishes between us!

SN3O5163

Hare Roast including its kidneys!

SN3O5164

Pheasant Roast!

SN3O5165

My choice!
Asian Black Bear stewed in red wine!

Important note: for those who think we are eating Japan wild life into extinction, stand corrected! All these animals had to be culled in the wild by professional hunters as they proliferate to very dangerous numbers for the local ecology. At least they become useful!

SN3O5167

One of the best cheese trays in the Prefecture, half of the cheese French, the other from Nagano Prefecture!

SN3O5168

And then it was all kinds of desserts I had very little time to ask about!
I promise to be more careful next time!

SN3O5169

It was certainly a delightful sin to break into them!

SN3O5170

To finish it all chocolate declined into four different symphonies!

Don’t ask me how much we pay! It was ridiculously cheap considering the quality, the originality and the supreme flavors, aromas and savors!

I very much doubt you will find the equivalent in Tokyo, so reserve your train ticket!

American Gastronomy: Meat Loaf with Mashed Potatoes and Demi-Glace Sauce Lunch at BLUE BOOKS cafe in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5029

Service: Very friendly, smiling and attentive
Equipment & Facilities: Great overall cleanliness. Superb washroom in same building separated from the cafe.
Prices: Reasonable for such big servings!
Strong points: Very generous cafe/bistro multi-genred gastronomy. Great variety. Great products. Entirely non-smoking in very modern atmosphere. Great books!

SN3O5022

It is cold these days, even in in Shizuoka City, the second mildest area in Japan after Okinawa, and to top it all I had been fighting off my regular Atumn/Winter cold when I needed something hot and fulfilling for lunch the other day!

SN3O5021

It was only natural that I took refuge at BLUE BOOKS cafe in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, as it is one of the biggest and warmest cafe/restaurants in town!
Someone might comment that I’m becoming American in Winter when I chose the Meat Loaf with Mashed Potatoes and Demi-Glace Sauce Lunch Set (I didn’t have the courage to point out the typos!)!

SN3O5024

Simple, appetizing, healthy and fulfilling, just what I needed!

SN3O5025

The meat loaf was definitely American comfort food in spite of the French (?) demi glace Sauce!

SN3O5026

But being French, I love mashed potatoes when I can mix them with the sauce!

SN3O5027

It might look very simple but the carrots, beans and egg contribute to good balance!

SN3O5028

Especially with plenty of fresh Caesar salad!

SN3O5087

I must apologize to my American friends: what I had thought all the time to be carrot bread is in fact corn bread!
Incidentally, delicious!

Sushi: Suruga Bay Sushi Set at Ginta in Yui, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5121

Service: Friendly and great explanations!
Facilities and equipment: old
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Suruga Bay sashimi and sushi! Sakura ebi!

SN3O5131

“Me-Ichi Dai/メイチダイ”, a very rare seabream caught in Suruga Bay! It goes by the Latin name of Gymnocranius griseus (Temminck and Schlegel)! You would have to pay thousands for it in Tokyo! One of the best seabreams in Japan!

For all its derelict appearance (and it is actually old in all senses of the term!) Ginta in Yui just in front of Suruga Bay regularly appears on magazines and TV.
The reason is simple enough: this is a rare place, albeit cheap by sushi restaurant standards, which serves mainly local fish and seafood caught in Suruga Bay/駿河湾, and more precisely in a smaller bay called Kurasawa Bay/倉沢湾!
These are the richest bays in Japan when it comes to varieties, even including deep-sea fish which also appear as sashimi on plates in Numazu city for example!

SN3O5119

Sakura ebi emblem on a small bridge crossing one of the many streams running into the sea!

Mr. Hara is a story himself: being the son of a sakura ebi/cherry shrimp fisherman, he was destined to sail in his father’s feet, but he had one little problem… he suffered from chronic seasickness! There was only path left to him: opening a sushi restaurant!

SN3O5120

But his superior knowledge of the local fish and fishermen gave him the inestimable advantage over all sushi restaurants in the Prefecture that he had first catch and first choice whenever he wanted!
He didn’t have to serve fancy sushi or sashimi but keeping things simple served him perfectly. People would come from very far indeed for only one of his three specialties: aji/鯵/Kurasawa Bay Horse mackerel sushi nigiri plate, full course sakura ebi/桜海老 set (in season only for a mere 3,000 ywn!) and the 8 local fish sushi nigiri set for the ridiculous price of 1,800 yen/18 US $/13 Euros!
The other day I opted for the 8 local sushi nigiri set (I always do, actually!).
The set details allways appears on a notice on the board and served in the same order, a simple and great way ro introduce the fish offered!

SN3O5121

The 8 local fish and seafood nigiri set!

SN3O5124

Yagara/ヤガラ/Trumpet fish served in konbujine style (marinated in seaweed)!

SN3O5125

Fugu/河豚/Globefish (don’t worry, a non-poisonous variety!) served with momiji oroshi, leek and ponzu topping!

SN3O5126

Kurasawa Bay Aji/鯵/Horse Mackerel!

SN3O5127

Ishidai/石鯛/Striped Beakfish-Barred Knifejaw!

SN3O5082

The other day, although I was hungry for lunch I knew I had better take something very tasty but healthy and low enough in calories to not put extra stress on a body already suffering for the mountains of food and lakes of alcoholic drinks one cannot escape from in the month of December!
The new Leaf Salad Topped with Shrimps, marinated vegetables and Avocado Dip Lunch Set offered at BLUE BOOKS cafe seems therefore appropriate!

SN3O5084

The salad!
Absolutely enormous! My lady neighbor couldn’t finish hers! LOL

SN3O5085

Succulent avocado sip!

SN3O5086

A Japanese touch with the topping of marinated vegetables, mainly violet onion!

SN3O5089

Very healthy combination and just enough to satisfy your bite!

SN3O5090

All vegetables super fresh and local in a Caesar salad style!

SN3O5087

Superb carrot bread for great balance and supplementary satisfaction!

SN3O5088

The lunch set includes a drink, lemon tea in my case to wash it all down!

Some American friends told me it is all a bit extravagant! LOL
