Italian Cuisine: Dinner at Gentile in Shizuoka City!

gentile-1

Service: a bit shy but extremely attentive and informative
Equipment & Facilities: spotless clean. Superb washroom. Entirely non-smoking.
Prices: reasonable, especially at lunch
Strong points: Authentic Italian cuisine created mainly with superb local products. Excellent wine and grappa list with judicious suggestions from the sommelier

We finally found the opportunity to visit Chef/owner Masaru Aoki’s new Italian Restaurant, Gentile, in Shizuoka City!

gentile-2

It is located where another Italian restaurant stood in the vicinity of Isetan whose owner suddenly had to go back to Tokyo for family reasons.

gentile-3

You had better reserve as this place can become very busy, especially at lunch time!
For dinner you can choose between set courses or individual dishes a la carte, or just come for a drink!

gentile-6

It has completely refurbished along a triple concept.
First a standing bar for customers only willing to partake of wine or spirits.

gentile-4

A counter with chairs for guests who come alone or wish to share a word with the chef and his sommelier.

gentile-7

Third tables with sofa and chairs for couples or groups wishing for more private comfort!

gentile-11

As for white wine (after a glass of Italian sparkling wine) we first ordered a bottle of Il Civettaio, Vermentino!

gentile-12

An unfiltered biological white wine with a beautiful color, splendid aroma and superb balance!

gentile-8

To accompany the sparkling wine we were offered a light salad made of finely cut local vegetables and wheat!

gentile-9

The first dish consisted of seared saury pike and sauteed horse mackerel from Suruga Bay and local marinated vegetables!

gentile-10

Of course all the bread is house-baked!

gentile-13

Extravagant aged Parma ham and raw mushrooms grown in Shizuoka Prefecture!

gentile-14

A dish difficult to find even in Tokyo: Sauteed black bass with renkon/lotus root from Asabata District in Shizuoka City!

gentile-15

And then it was time to order a red wine:
A nectar with an unusual name, Banshee! Created with Sangiovese grapes grown in Maremma, Toscana!

gentile-16

A discovery!

gentile-17

The main dish!

gentile-18

Vegetables all local and mainly organic, including three kinds of tuber!

gentile-19

Succullent “minonegyuu” beef from animals bred at Hina Farm in Hamamatsu City!

gentile-20

Masaru’s special pasta with fresh Piemonte black truffles!

gentile-26

Masaru’s desserts are known all over town!

gentile-22

And don’t forget to check the impressive grappa and homemade liqueurs on offer!

The beginning of a long love story!

Italian Gastronomy: Lunch at Il Paladino in Shizuoka City (September 2014)

Service: Excellent and very friendly
Facilities: Great and very large washroom, great cleanliness overall
Prices: Reasonable to slightly expensive.
Strong points: Sicilian Cuisine. Top-class Italian wines and great collection of Grappa.
Non-smoking at tables. Private room can be made non-smoking!

SN3O0263

I finally managed to visit Il Paladino Tratorria in Takajo machi, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City after a long absence!

SN3O0264

It was actually for the occasion of a “business lunch” with a client of mine!

SN3O0266

It can easily become a very busy place, so at lunch they make sure to be prepared for customers in a hurry!

SN3O0267

For lunch they offer three types of set menus.
We opted for the Chef’s recommendation!

SN3O0269

Of course all the bread is home-baked!

SN3O0268

Enormous antipasti misto!

SN3O0270

Sicilian bread and beans soup!

SN3O0271

Pasta of the day!

SN3O0272

Stewed beef tongue!

SN3O0273

Grilled “Isaki/Chicken grunt”! A typical fish from Shizuoka!

SN3O0529

It had been 3 months since I visited Solio Italian Restaurant for the last time in Shizuoka City last Friday and I was wondering if I could catch up with the new dishes at one of my favorite Italian Restaurants in the Prefecture!

SN3O0525

We actually came very early, just before 5:30 p.m. which allowed us a special happy hour glass and antipasti misto set!

SN3O0524

I had wanted to start with a beer after the very hot day but this Chardonnay spaprkling wine from the Veneto was just perfect for all its seemingly modesty!

SN3O0527

The antipasti misto including small fry escabeche, fritatta, eggplant and lamb meat ball!

SN3O0526

Naturally the bread is home-baked!

SN3O0528

These exquisite mini tomatoes (from Chef Kato’s garden) in wine jelly were on the house!
Now, what did we have?

SN3O0530

Marinated mussles!

SN3O0532

Melons are a main product of Shizuoka Prefecture and pruned min melons are extensively used!
Putting a big mussle on a slice and eating them together was the idea!

SN3O0533

While we were waiting we tasted some Italian candied fruit!

SN3O0534

Beautiful deep-fried morsels: fritto!

SN3O0535

Shizuoka grown zucchini flowers filled with ricotta cream!

SN3O0536

Zucchini!

SN3O0538

Carpaccio with a fish caught in the Suruga Bay!

SN3O0539

Madai/Japanese seabream!

SN3O0540

The risotto of the day!

SN3O0541

Prepared with Shizuoka-grown sweet corn and parmegiani cheese!

SN3O0542

The meat dish of the day!

SN3O0543

Skillet-fried pork from Kuwahara Farm in Fujinomiya City!

Unfortunately we were too full to take dessert!
That will be for the next time!

Italian Gastronomy: Lunch at Papa in Shizuoka City!

Service: Kind and easy-going
Facilities & Equipment: Overall very clean. Excellent washroom. Entirely non-smoking!
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: Gnocchi!

SN3O0072

When a restaurant stands very near your workplace you tend to overlook it for many reasons… and I had been doing so with Papa since it opened more than 10 years ago!

SN3O0073

But there was at least one reason why I couldn’t ignore it any longer: Gnocchi!
Not often you find an Italian specializing in gnocchi in Shizuoka!

SN3O0061

And when gnocchi are served with Shizuoka-bred black hair wagyu stew at such a reasonable price it would be a sin to ignore it!

SN3O0062

Of course Chef Akira Oheda not only makes his own gnocchi, but also his own focaccia bread and quiches!

SN3O0064

First of all, a healthy plate of appetizers with home-made quiche, carrot salad and greens!

SN3O0065

Home-made focaccia bread! (the wine was extra!)

SN3O0066

The gnocchi in black hair wagyu beef stew!

SN3O0068

Splendid beef stew! You don’t need a knife!

SN3O0069

Home-made gnocchi!

SN3O0070

I treated myself to a little extra: home-made blanc manger!

SN3O0071

Or should I say Panacotta?
Simple but really delicious!

SN3O5572

When a seemingly simple dish is a discovery!

SN3O5573

One overriding reason why I patronize Solio Italian Restaurant in Shizuoka City is that Chef Takehiko Katoh/加藤武彦さん uses exclusively seasonal ingredients especially when it comes to vegetables, especially local ones or from his own garden!

SN3O5576

Chef Takehiko Katoh/加藤武彦さん uses only olive oil, salt and paper.
Cooking the vegetables in a skillet without a lid over a fire and last inside the oven helps maintain the vegetables shape, color and consistency.
A simple and sublime way to enjoy vegetables!
Incidentally it becomes a vegan dish as well!

Shizuoka City being in the middle of a Prefecture benifiting from the greatest variety of ingredients in the country is replete with great restaurants, especially Italian establishments that could well have a lot of famed chefs blushing of envy!

When you order “pudding” for dessert at Soilo Italian Restaurant in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, you will first have to say “Budino”, and then don’t expect something in a small round dish!

This great pudding you delightfully cut through with a spoon was concocted with extravagant ricotta cheese!
It results in multi-flavored dessert you take time to enjoy a little at a time to rediscover all its facets!

SN3O5135

Since all the food is seasonal at Solio you can expect late Autumn fruit at this time of the year, including squat persimmons which were first grown in Shizuoka Prefecture a long, long time ago!

Once again, simple and sublime!

SN3O5131

Service: Pro and very friendly
Equipment & Facilities: Great overall cleanliness and superb washroom
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Fresh local ingredients whenever possible. Both traditional and inventive Italian cuisine. Good wine list at moderate prices. Open late!

Venison is very much in season right now, and I had to sample some at Solio in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, last night!
For once the meat was not from Shizuoka Prefecture but from Hokkaido where venison is famous under the name of Ezo Shika/蝦夷鹿! Ezo is actually one of Hokkaido’s old names!

SN3O5132

The venison was first poeled then oven-baked before being sliced and served with a superb wine sauce!

SN3O5133

But the vegetables were not only seasonal but all grown in Shizuoka prefecture: leek, garlic, potato, sweet potato, Brussels sprouts,…

When “simple” rhymes with “sublime”!
