Food Supplements: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

I remember a very revealing article by L’Express (French Weekly Magazine) on food supplements. It only confirmed some of my worries and I decided it might be a good idea to impart what I have come to know.
Now, I realize I’m in for a lot of flak from interested parties, but frankly speaking I don’t care a fig. This is mega business here in Japan and probably more in the US and Europe, and so what?
It certainly promises me fun when I will field some queries/complaints! LOL

Some food supplements are definitely useful with some precautions and I call them “The Good”.
Others have never been categorically proven as beneficial to humans and are just a drain on resources and probably the best business of them all. Not dangerous but nearly useless. I call them “The Bad”.
The last category includes some food supplements that are downright dangerous and you are in for some surprises. They merit the name of “The Ugly”!

And a single piece of advice before we embark on the boat of discord: Food supplements shouldn’t be ingested as a “cocktail” but one at a time, and one at a day if feasible. That is unless you want some digestive disorders!

THE GOOD

VITAMINS D

Vitamins D are vital for the health of bones (calcium regulation). A lack of them will result in rachitism in kids and osteoposis in old people.
They also influence on the immune defenses of the human body.
A regular exposure to sun will help the skin to synthethize it, even with only the hands and face exposed to the sun.
People who live a lot outdoors, eat red-fleshed fish such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardine, herring, bonito or marlin), dairy products or eggs do not need such a food supplement.
But vegetarians and vegans do need them.

OMEGA 3

These are contained in the fat acids called “essential acids” because vital to human life although the human organism is unable to synthesize them.
They are found in red-fleshed fish, but also in rapeseed plants, walnuts and whole wheat.
They are extremely beneficial to the heart, and brain articulations.
200 mg a day or 1.5 g a week should be enough. Fish oil tablets usually contain 100 to 400 mg. But compared to 1~2 g provided by 100g of mackerel, herring or even tinned sardine, they just don’t compete! 2~3 g of cod oil hold the same!
Vegetarians and vegans, do eat walnuts and other grains!

IRON

A lack of iron entails fatigue and repeptitive infections.
It can spell for a high risk of anemia.
Women with high flow periods are at a risk as well as vegetarians/vegans, pregnant women and teenage girls.
Endurance sportsmen/women run the same risk.
You need a prescription for such supplement as an excess will result into intoxication.
Now Indian vegetarians have found the solution in dry grains such as lentils and dhal.
Fish, shellfish, some dry vegetables and green vegetables contain iron.
Iron supplement are also offered against fatigue, palpitations, as well as to improve children immune defenses and intellectual performances.

GINSENG

Originally from Asia, America and Siberia, this root is proposed to prevent cancer and treat diabetes.
As for improving sport performances, it is practically insignificant unless you you inject it into the body at very high doses (doping?).
On the other hand it does seem to protect against cancer, especially ovary and pancreas as well as glycemia.

————————————–

THE BAD

CARNITINE

Carnitine is an idispensisble molecule for sportsmen and obese people.
Producers aver that their carnitine supplements would augment usage of lipids with the dual benefit of improved stamina and loss of weight.
Bad luck: neither has been proved.
Even the organism of strict vegetarians produces enough of it!
As for prevention of Alzheimer syndrome and cardiovascular problems, that’s chalatans’ study!

GUARANA

Originally from Amazonia, it is offered to combat fatigue and improve sports performance.
Not better than coffeee! Actually 200 g of guarana contains 80 g of caffeine. If you already drink a lot of tea or coffee it can be only negative on your system: insomnia, palpitations, etc.
Its benefits have never been proven!

CURCUMA

One of the spices found in curry powder mixes.
Offered to prevent Alzheimer syndrome or cancer, to treat hepapatitis C, hypercholesterolemia and to improve memory.
According to producers, it is efficient against Alzheimer syndrome and cancer tumors and others.
As far as cancer is concerend, the potential seems interesting. As for the rest, no exhaustive research has been conducted!

—————————-

THE UGLY

SPIRULINA

This blue algae found in rivers and lakes is cultivated for its proteins (70% of the dried extract).
It is rich in iron and zinc, elements often needed by vegetarians.
Also contains Vitamin B.
On the other it is poor in useful fats.
Anti-ageing, slimming and anti-cholesterol properties are the talk of charlatans. Full stop.
Word is that it will entail a loss of Vitamin B12 for vegetarians. Spirulina does contain some in great quantity, but it is inactive in the human system. Worse it is noxiou as it prevents the assimilation of human friendly Vitamin B12, which is present in the human system!

SELENIUM

Present in meat, fish, eggs and cereals.
It is offered to cure anti-aging and prevent cancer and heart diseases.
Selenium is indispensible in small quantities. to paly a positive role against oxydizing stress.
Actually a well balanced diet will easily replace it!
If you ingest more than 900 micrograms (yes, you read well!), nails will break, hair will split and skin will be weakened with consequent neurological alterations.
In animals it has been proven as cancerigenous!

BETA CAROTENE

Present in oranges, carrots and green vegetables.
Offered to cure anti ageing and to prepare the skin against sun exposure.
Once absorbed it becomes a beneficient Vitamin A.
Beta carotene contained in natural food is beneficient, but ineffective or even dangerous in artificial form, especially in supplements which contain far too much.
It is particularly dangerous for smokers who have a better chance to die from lung cancer when absorbing such supplements!
Just keep to the carrots and green vegetables!

Healthy Chinese Gastronomy at CHAO in Shizuoka City (Cenova Department Store)!

SN3O0016

Avocado and Mushrooms Tianjin omelet rice!

Service: Kind, smiling and attentive in spite of a crowded place!
Equipment & Facilities: Very clean overall. Shared washroom with Cenove Department Store but very excellent. Entirely non-smoking!
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Mild but very healthy All-Chinese gastronomy

SN3O0006

When it comes to reasonable, healthy food in a clean environment Cenova Department Store in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka Citycan be a blessing even if it is crowded at times.
Dragon recommended me CHAO the other day and I paid it my first visit at lunch today.
The place was actually busy but I was ushered in with a smile and attention.
When I placed my order the waitress went as far as to inquire if I had ordered too much!
So, what did I order?

SN3O0009

A set of five dimdung/点心!

SN3O0014

Great colors!
I checked after my meal, they do not use any monosodium glutamate (MSG) or artificial coloring or seasoning!

SN3O0015

From another angle!
Very tasty and light!

SN3O0010

Umami tappuri ebichiri/Sweet and sour chili shrimps with plenty of umami!

SN3O0012

Very appetizing indeed!

SN3O0012

The shrimps tasted fresh. Very mild for such a dish but this is Japan and especially Shizuoka where people are not too keen on hot food! Fine by me!

SN3O0011

Avocado and mushrooms Tianjin omelet rice!

SN3O0016

Another good point for Chao is that they do try to offer food with a little originality. Their four dishes including avocado was a revelation!

SN3O0018

Once again so healthy and tasty!

SN3O0017

As service, egg soup made with real chicken soup!

Another visit is definitely on the cards!

Italian Gastronomy: Local Seasonal vegetables Skillet at Soloio in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5571

Strong points: Fresh local ingredients whenever possible. Both traditional and inventive Italian cuisine. Good wine list at moderate prices. Open late!

SN3O5572

When a seemingly simple dish is a discovery!

SN3O5573

One overriding reason why I patronize Solio Italian Restaurant in Shizuoka City is that Chef Takehiko Katoh/加藤武彦さん uses exclusively seasonal ingredients especially when it comes to vegetables, especially local ones or from his own garden!

SN3O5576

Chef Takehiko Katoh/加藤武彦さん uses only olive oil, salt and paper.
Cooking the vegetables in a skillet without a lid over a fire and last inside the oven helps maintain the vegetables shape, color and consistency.
A simple and sublime way to enjoy vegetables!
Incidentally it becomes a vegan dish as well!

Non Smoking Japan: You want to Smoke? Go to the Toilets! Cenova Department Store in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5590

No, you are not allowed to smoke inside the toilets, but…………

SN3O5586

Yesterday I did have to use the washroom inside Cenova Department Store in Shizuoka City when I got intrigued to see a couple coming out together out of the same door…
They did not look that happy…
Actually they had come out of one of the washrooms but out of a room reserved for smokers!

SN3O5587

The Gents’ Washroom!

SN3O5588The Ladies’ washroom!

Luckily there was nobody around when I took the pictures, otherwise,….

SN3O5589
The Smokers’ Room!

Note the general grey color!

I do think that Cenova has a good idea there. Instead of providing a special space for smokers, the notionof directing them to the toilets will impress a new thinking in their heads!

Entirely Non-Smoking Restaurants (& Bars) in Shizuoka Prefecture (as of February 2nd, 2014)

TETSUA-SUGIMOTO

Beautiful Vegetables at Tetsuya Sugimoto in Shizuoka City!

I agree that this particular article has been long overdue.
Not only my expats friends, but many Japanese friends have been at pains at finding restaurants, bars and cafes where they wouldn’t have to put up with the hazards and stink of smoke inhaled and expelled by uncaring customers.
Some time ago I mentioned partially non-smoking restaurants but I see little point to mention them unless the entirely non-smoking times are clearly announced and respected!

This is of course not an exhaustive list, but it will be regularly updated as I visit establishments for work!
There is no special order to this list, they come as they come!

One more important point: Non-smoking is not the only criterion, good food is, too!
If you are kind enough to recommend me restaurants not introduced here it will be my pleasure to survey them!

Non Smoking Japan: Half Measures in Fujieda City Streets

SN3O5138

Whereas some cities in Shizuoka Prefecture like Shizuoka, Hamamatsu or Yaizu do try to create a non-smoking environment on their street pavements, the City of Fujieda is only reminding smokers to litter the streets with their fag ends/cigarette butts…..

SN3O5168

Mind you, the signs are everywhere, especially around the JR Station.
Prohibiting littering the pavements is good but at the same time such a warning tends to comfort smokers into their habits………………

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

Non-smoking Japan: The Shinkasen Bullet Train Contradiction!

SN3O5298

Shinkasen platform, 8th carriage, Shizuoka JR Station!

There is a big contradiction in common transport betwee local trains and Shinkansen Bullet Trains in the Shizuoka Prefecture and in all the stations between at least Tokyo and Osaka!

SHINKANSEN-CONTRADICTION-2a

Poster found at the bottom of the stairs leading to the Tokaido Local Line in Shizuoka JR Station reminding commuters and passengers that the whole area including the platforms are non-smoking!

All local lines, including the Tokaido Line trains have been non-smoking for quite a while and the responsible authorities have been quite aggressive about it with a flurry of new signs being stuck everywhere.

SN3O5135

Sign seen in Shiuzoka JR Station!

SN3O5136

Bi-lingual, so no arguing, that is unless you want discuss the grammar!

SN3O5137

Same sign inside Fujieda JR Station!

SN3O5192

The non-smoking “box) on the Shinkasen platform inside Shizuoka JR Station.

Now, why are the rules not only different but confusing for the Shinkansen trains!
Interestingly enough it seems that the East Japan Railways have a different attitude as they seem to be the only line (between at least Tokyo and Osaka, and further?).
I recently rode Shinkasen trains moving east/north from Tokyo and they are all entirely non-smoking!

SN3O5194

At least smokers on the Shinkasen tracks in Shiuoka JR Station have been asked (only very recently) to damage their health on their own cubicle at the very far side of the platform in front the 16th carriage door!
By the way what do they mean by “for adult smokers only”?

SN3O5193

The only problem is that the 16th carriage is non-smoking!

SN3O5195

Non-smoking signs are posted above heads and….

SN3O5196

and at your feet, but….

SN3O5298

Only the No 8 carriage is indicated as smoking allowed,…

SN3O5299

But once you are inside the train you find out that the No 8 carriage is non-smoking!

SN3O5301

Now somewhere in the middle of the train a map clearly indicates that carriages 10 and 15 are smoking allowed, a fact which is not advertised on the platforms!

SN3O5300

Smoking allowed in carriage No 10 (Green Car=First Class!)!

SN3O5302

Smoking alllowed in Carriage N0 15 (Second Class!)

From past experience I can tell you that cars No 9, 11, 14 and 16 had better avoided too as the smoke has a way to pervade into them!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

Entirely Non-Smoking Restaurants in Shizuoka Prefecture (As of January 25th, 2014)

Non-Smoking Japan: No Smoking Pavement Sign in hamamatsu City!

SN3O5112

I saw some (only a few unfortunately) of these signs south of Hamamatsu City JR Station.

The great thing is taht not only it asks people not smoking while walking along the pavement, but also warns not to throw cigarette butts or empty cans on the pavement!

“For the ske of goo manners in our city” says the line at the bottom.

Still some hope left if cities start a real non smoking streets campaign.

So far in Shizuoka Prefecture, Shizuoka City is the most ahead!

Entirely Non-Smoking Restaurants in Shizuoka Prefecture (as of December 15th, 2013)

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

No Smoking Streets in Shizuoka City (and how about Japan?)!

SN3O5132

The pavements in Shizuoka City are full of signs that can sometimes be an eye sore, but there is at least one I would encourage the city, Prefecture and country to stick everywhere, that is, a NO-SMOKING sign!

The one they use in Shizuoka City represents a kingfisher because it is the emblem bird of Shizuoka City!

The sign says: “Smoking is prohibited on that street”!

Incidentally I did run into some confrontations with some morons who ignored the sign at their own feet…
The worst occasion was with one particularly idotic (man) moron kept puffing in the middle of the small crowd waiting to cross the street. When I complained he just replied (in Japanese) to f…k o.f you b….y foreigner!
But I must say for the Japanese that no one took his defense when I replied (in Japanese) in kind!
Mind you, this is still a very safe and peaceful country so I prefer to forget such incidents, but the no-smoking will stay.

Note: I’m a former smoker and it is probably even harder on my sort! LOL
