Shizuoka Gastronomy on Manhole Covers!

SN3O5522

Yaizu City is the most famous Bonito/Katsuo fishing harbor city in Japan!

Japan is increasingly becoming known all over the world for its gastronomy and more recently for its unequaled manhole covers. Shizuoka prefecture is no exception when it comes to either, or even better, to a combination of the two!

Shizuoka Prefecture has a lot to offer when it comes to gastronomy and is certainly above all when it comes to variety, be it vegetables, fruit or meat when it comes to land and a bounty of seafood when it comes to sea!

SN3O5051

Yaizu City has no less than three different manhole covers depicting Katsuo/Bonito for the simple reason it is the most important fishing harbor in Japan as far as bonito is concerned!

Hirame/Soles or Flounders in Hamamatsu City!

But when it comes to seafood, Yaizu City is only a portion of it all!
Come to Hamamatsu City for example. They managed to make a pun out of their own manhole covers! In Sakana, an area in downtown Hamamatsu City they have no less than four covers representing fish because “sakana” written with a different kanji/Japanese character means “fish”!

“Tara” or Cod!

Another “Hirame”/sole or Flounder!

And “Maguro”/Tuna!

Shall we continue with seafood?
Hatsushima Island is one of the few islands administered by Shizuoka Prefecture. It can be easily reached by ferry boat from Atami City.
It is celebrated for its “Iseebi”/Spiny lobster and “Sazae”/Turbo shell!

Izu Inatori fishing harbor in south west Izu Peninsula is celebrated all over Japan for its “Kinmedai”/Splendid Alfonsino!

At the very tip of Izu Peninsula Minami Izu is also proud of its “Iseebi”?Spiny lobsters!

Heda, in North eastern Izu Peninsula, now part of Numazu City, is known for “Takahashigani”/Japanese Giant Crab, the largest crab in the World!

SN3O5096

And to conclude with seafoods one must visit Yui, Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City, known all over japan for its “Sakuarebi”/Cherry Shrimps. Actually there two more tiny covers depicting this little gastronomic treasure!

It is about time to switch to land products, and one cannot overlook green tea! Introduced to Shizuoka Prefecture more than 800 years ago, we are still the biggest producer in Japan. Interestingly enough, covers depicting tea are to be found only (that is, for the present!) in Kikugawa City with two different types, one of them representing the “Cha Musume”/Tea leaves handpicking girl/lady!

Shizuoka Prefecture is also renown for its strawberries and one can find them on covers in Nirayama, Izu City, also famous for World Heritage Hansharo and its beautiful views of Mount Fuji!

Hamamatsu City is not only famous for its fish, eels in particular, or oysters, but also for its oranges to be found in Mikkabi!

And we can conclude (that is, for the moment, as there must be others to come in the future, what with the booming tourism!) with a lesser known piece of gastronomy: back to the beginning of the 17th Century when Shogun Tokugawa Ieayasu retired to Sumpu (present Shizuoka City) he discovered “nasu”/egg plants exclusively grown in the Orito area (prensently Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City) and grew so fond of them that he awarded them the appellation of “Orito Nasu”/Orito eggplants. These are still grown there and are a rare vegetable searched by all sorts of renown chefs!
Can you see it at the bottom right of the manhole cover?

Good search and bon appetit!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 40: New Commemorative Fire Hydrant Manhole Cover 2nd Type in Shizuoka City!

On February 5th in 2015 I had reported on a new Commemorative Fire Hydrant Manhole Cover being installed in Various locations in Shizuoka City to mark the 400th Anniversary of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu’ss Death.

SN3O0163
SN3O0163

Read more about the above manhole cover HERE

21b-6

Now, yesterday I noticed apparently the same cover because it seemed brand new!

21b-7

It is located along the Shichiken Cho Street at an intersection not far from Isetan Department Store!
I soon found why I was intrigued: it was a different cover!

21b-1

The new cover!

21b-2

In the upper left quarter a falcon (Tokugawa Ieyasu was passionate about falconry!) had replaced the Kanji character “水”for “water”!
The shape of the clouds has also been amended.

21b-3

The text inside the scrolls had been written black on white (instead of white on black) with a different sentence meaning “Shizuoka City which was loved by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu”. Actually the city was called “Fuchu” before he retired there in 1607 when he changed its name to “Sumpu”. It became “Shizuoka City” only during the beginning of the Meiji Era!

21b-4

In the lower right quarter the date “2017” has been replaced with two eggplants!
Shizuoka City, more precisely Shimizu City before it was merged as Shimizu Ku, is famous for a local eggplant called “折戸なす/orito nasu” taht Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu was very fond of!
Moreover five pine trees have been lft out the six original ones!

21b-5

As for the bottom left quarter it has basically been left untouched!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 39): Gotemba City!

GOTEMBA-A-5

A fire hydrant manhole cover type found in the whole prefecture but with the emblem of Gotemba City!

The other day I had the occasion to visit again again Gotemba City in the Eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture for the first time in many years and could at last manage to check all the manhole covers in town.
They are quite easy to discover as they all within walking distance for the station north exit!

GOTEMBA-A-2

This the main manhole cover symbolizing Gotemba City and remiding visitors that once a D 52-type steam locomotive used to stop there!

GOTEMBA-A-1

The same manhole cover in color (only a few of them!) with Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms!

GOTEMBA-A-3

This smaller valve cover is fairly new and comes into two different types!

GOTEMBA-A-4

The second type!
I wonder what the birds are?

GOTEMBA-A-4a

Small white covers with the original design can be found in many places!
Otherwise many other types, both neutral and colored common to the whole Prefecture can be found along your steps!
Good hunting!

SN3O0600
SN3O0600

Nishigaya Sports Center is located far away, about 30 minutes by bicycle from Shizuoka Station on the other side of the Abe River. That is probably why I never realised they might have, and an ancient one at that, their own particular manhole covers!

SN3O0603
SN3O0603

They are all, 21 of them, located in the middle of a street running along the sports center (none were found near the baseball stadium, though). There are two types, most often in pairs, although of the exactly same design.
They were probably installed in 1990 when the Sports Center was completed, making them very old by Shizuoka standards!

SN3O0575

SN3O0576

Visitors were greeted with two of these public water spouts in shape of dragon head!

SN3O0584
SN3O0584

Quite a few fire hydrant and waterways manhole covers in their mint form were on display including a guest in the shape of a flowery design from Aichi Prefecture!

SN3O0586
SN3O0586

of course the hollyhock, emblem flower of Shizuoka City (for waterways) was exhibited!
Actually there exist more than 8 types of the same design!

SN3O0585
SN3O0585

There was also a mint of a fire hydrant manhole cover from Shimizu City before its merger with Shizuoka City!

SN3O0579
SN3O0579

The start display was of the three most recent fire hydrant manhole covers in Shizuoka City!

SN3O0578
SN3O0578

I have described those two in recent articles!

SN3O0581
SN3O0581

This one was minted in 2007 to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the retirement of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu to Sumpu (the old name of Shizuoka City!)!

This was laid on February 24th this year to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the Death of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu in our city!

SN3O0577
SN3O0577

These are the very newest designs to be laid in Shizuoka City!

SN3O0583
SN3O0583

The character on all three designs is a kingfisher, the emblem bird of Shizuoka City!
But unfortunately it will be some time before we can admire them in our streets!

SN3O0580
SN3O0580

This is the mint of a firefighting kingfisher!
When I asked the civil servants where we could them, they first replied they did not know exactly.
Later they were kind enough to meet me again with more of their colleagues who were actually extremely helpful and kind.
The story is we will never see this particular design as it was found out the surface would become too slippery when wet. Therefore this has become a mint proof that will ot be reproduced.
On the other hand the city is re-designing the cover to improve its safety but no one knew when they would appear yet!

A rare find if there is one!
Great for my collection until we see the new ones!
It would be a sham not to discover them as they are so cute!

Manhole Covers In Shizuoka Prefecture 35: New Commemorative Fire Hydrant Manhole Cover in Shizuoka City!

Last Friday the Shizuoka Municipal Government finally announced the creation of a new Fire hydrant manhole cover to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the death of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu in Sumpu Castle.
I decided some more investigation was in order and I visited the Shizuoka City Hall to find out where it was exhibited.
It wasn’t.
And nobody could tell me where to find it until a nice lady civil servant did some research and told me I would have to go to a Shizuoka City Works Office Water Distribution Department in Nishinakahara on the other side of the station! I actually cycled the wrong way, had to ask the way in a police station who didn’t know much more than me in spite of my 38-year residency.

SN3O0012

南安倍取水場/Minami Abe (of Abe River) Water Pumping Site! Lucky I can read Japanese!

SN3O0008

Looking at the nondescript building/office there is no way to know where you are.
Lucky that nice lady back in the Shizuoka City Hall did some good investigative wrok for me!
Not only this but she had forewarned a young civil servant of my coming!
And the least I can say is that he was ready with information and manhole covers!
But let’s have a look around first!

SN3O0006

Cover for access a small to medium water valve!

SN3O0007

The smallest type of cover for access to a water valve!

SN3O0009

Mr. Yuuta Fujii/藤井勇太さん to whom I’m indebted for the whole investigation!

SN3O0004

The three types of manhole covers (plus the smaller ones) this particular office is in charge of installing and maintaining!
There are other types for electricity, gas, drainage waters, sewers, but they all are the reposiblity of as many offices! No wonder it is so difficult to find out information!

SN3O0002

The traditional fire fighting festival pole, “matoi/纏”!

SN3O0005

The traditional three fire fighting festival pole, a model probably older and definitely rarer!

SN3O0001

The cover commemorating the 400th anniversary of the coming of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu to Sumpu Castle

Most of the above three covers will be replaced with the new one in the two months to come.
Hurry to take photos of them before they disappear!

SN3O0011

The design of the new cover to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the death of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu in Sumpu Castle!

SN3O0017

Mr. Fujii had prepared color copies of the information for me!
The design represents Mount Fuji, Miho no Matsubara Beach, Kunozan Toshogun Shrine and Suruga Bay!
Relief accounts fro 54.56% of the surface!

The plaque is fabricated by a Shizuoka Company called Hinode Suidou Kiki Co.!

SN3O0018

40 covers will be fabricated for a total cost of 2,500,000 yen.
Each cover diameter is 530 mm, and each will weigh 24 kg!

SN3O0019

They will be installed to replace ld types around Sumpu Park and along the route from Shizuoka JR Station to the Sengen Shrine!

Mr. Fujii has promised to call me when the first cover will be installed for the benefit of the media!
New report in the offing, then!

I have already mentioned manhole cob\evrs in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City.
This is a very large area indeed and it tends to mix all kinds of covers since it was merged with Shizuoka City.
But if like me yesterday you happened to cycle along the Miho Beach, especially along the parallel streets running through urban parts you will find them concentrated in large numbers!

SN3O0248

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 33: Kanbara, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

Kanbara, located between Yui and Shin kambara in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, was merged into Shizuoka City on March 1st, 2006, but Shimizu City became part of Shizuoka City as Shimizu Ku on April 1st, 2004.
On the other hand Yui merged with Shimizu Ku into Shizuoka City only on November 1st, 2008 with some confusing results when it comes to manhole covers!
Soon or later, especially after I have covered Shin Kanbara, I will have to to publish a compilation of only the truly decorated manhole covers in the whole of Shizuoka City, and that is mor than 2 dozens of them!

SN3O0074

This is the most representative fire hydrant manhole cover of Kanabara. Even though, the crest is that of Yui, but the mark/first kanji/蒲 of Kanbara is included!

SN3O0079

It is often found together with a water valve pit!

SN3O0094Found in front of Kanbara JR Station!

This pattern exists elsewhere but it is inscribed with “Kanbara Town”!

SN3O0076

A quite ancient manhole cover over a fire cistern!

SN3O0077

A valve pit with the Kanbara mark!

SN3O0084

A larger valve pit with the Kanbara mark!

SN3O0089

A valve pit in blue instead of orange with measures inverted and the Kanbara Mark!

SN3O0093

The same but with the measurements “properly” set!

SN3O0083

This pressurized air valve pit, being quite a common type could be well a national type!

SN3O0087

It is also often found together with a previous water valve pit!

SN3O0088

Very ancient Kanbara Water duct cover!

SN3O0086

This beautiful fire hydrant cover is actually a Shizuoka City item, therefore quite recent!

SN3O0082

This cover reflects the confusion. It is a soccer fire hydrant manhole cover from Shimizu City before it was merged into Shizuoka City, which could have been set either before or after the merger!

SN3O0080

This water valve pit being very recent it tends to prove that the Shimizu City covers were later used in Shimizu Ku which includes Kanbara Town as it was called before the merger!

SN3O0081

The same with different measures!

SN3O0085

The same again with still different measures!

SN3O0090

This type of water valve pit can be found elsewhere!

SN3O0091

A newly discovered foundry company!

SN3O0092

Hayakawa Foundry!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 32: Kanaya, Shimada City!

Decorated manhole covers all seem to be those of fire hydrants in Kanaya Cho in Shimada City, although there is a big oddity!

SN3O0307

SN3O0307

Big red fire truck. This design can be found in many cites in side and outside Shizuoka Prefecture although the “city crest” will be different!

SN3O0308

This must a fairly recent cover as the crest is that of Shimada City to which Kanaya was recently merged!

SN3O0313

Same with a slight difference!

SN3O0314

Space was cut to accommodate measurement information!

SN3O0305

Interestingly enough this one was donated by the City of Ise in Mie Prefecture!

SN3O0303

A specail pattern found in other cities, although rare. With a local central motif, althogh apparently not of Kanaya nor of Shimada City!

SN3O0310

A common fire hydrant type with the Kanaya Crest!

SN3O0302

A more ancient variety with a single “handle”!

SN3O0304

Another ancient type found elsewhere but with the Kanaya Crest!

SN3O0301

The same, double, but with “water” mark!

SN3O0306

A very old one, unspecified but very probably a fir hydrant, with “Kanaya Vilage” inscribed long before the merging with Shimada City!

SN3O0309

Water valve pit with the Kanaya Crest!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 31: Arai Machi

Arai machi, since included into Hamamtsu City is bit of a strange place completely separated not only by the station (you have to pay 180 yen anytime you want to go to the other side) but also by a sea arm.
The interesting manhole covers lie south of the Arai Machi JR Station while the north housing the professional outboard boat races is pretty drab.

SOUTH SIDE:

SN3O0251

The original manhole cover for Arai Machi!
I wonder what the colored one looked like!

SN3O0258

Arai Machi is really confusing as this manhole cover seems to belong to belong to neighboring Kosai City!

SN3O0257

Same for this one, too!

SN3O0254

This pressurized air manhole cover on the other hand solely belongs to Arai Machi!

SN3O0253

Same for this water valve pit!

SN3O0249

A smaller and different valve pit!

SN3O0252

Now, this valve pit definitely belongs to Kosai City!

SN3O0250

A smaller Arai Machi water valve pit!

SN3O0261

A medium-sized gas valve pit in the middle of the road!

SN3O0262

An even bigger gas valve pit still in the middle of the road! They were neighbors and I did take a risk photographing them! LOL

NORTH SIDE

SN3O0238

It is the first time I such a shape for any manhole cover! A strange air access for firemen!

SN3O0231

A very long one for “high electricity”!

SN3O0232

Probably stands for high voltage electricity!

SN3O0233

Same shape for “low electricity”!

SN3O0234

I wonder if they mean “low electricity output” instead of low voltage electricity!

SN3O0235

A sewer manhole cover by Ohtake foundry!

SN3O0237

Same but with low voltage electricity indication!

SN3O0241

A vertical marking instead of a round indication for low voltage electricity!

SN3O0239

Same but for high voltage electricity!

SN3O0240

Drainage manhole cover!

SN3O0242

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 30: Ecopa in Fukuroi by Guest Blogger Atsuko Kurata!

My good friend Ms. Atsuko Akira, who share the drainspotting bug with recently visited the Ecopa Sports Complex in Aino, Fukuroi City!
This is the report on her trip!

She visited the Shizuoka Stadium ECOPA to purposedly to discover some manhole covers
Let her show you the way to ECOPA!

ECOPA-1

First of all, take the Tokaido Line and get off at Aino JR Station!

ECOPA-2

Once gone though the ticket gate, turn left!

ECOPA-3

Some signs will guide you all the way! Then walk through the long passage and go down stairs!

ECOPA-4

There were useful signs to know where you are, the way to ECOPA and tourism information around Aino!

ECOPA-5

Bilingual map!

ECOPA-7

Easy to understand!

ECOPA-8

There are more signs outside the station to make sure you find the right way!
It was officially announced that it is only 10 minutes walk to the stadium… Well, it took her more and up a gentle slope!
The park stands atop a hill.

ECOPA-9

This is the facade of Aino Station!
It was opened on April 22, 2001 just before the FIFA World Cup 2002!
England played there!

ECOPA-10

This is a nice place for train/JR buffs as the Tokaido Line and the Tokaido Shinkansen run parallel here! Actually, she saw the Dr. Yellow/Shinkansen was running east to west! It is an inspection train for electrics and track. The check-out is conducted twice a month, so she was lucky to spot it!! Unfortunately, she had no time to take pictures… It just wheezed away!

ECOPA-11

An unusually big double manhole cover from Fukuroi City!

There were some covers on my way to the stadium. They were all new to her!

ECOPA-12

Ancient valve pit and central motif dating back to before the expansion of Fukuroi City!

ECOPA-13

Same again for this pressurized air access!

ECOPA-14

This is the pedestrian deck to the stadium!

ECOPA-15

You walk along it with ECOPA is in front of your eyes!

ECOPA-16

This is ECOPA!
No one there on that day…
It’s so huge and so windy…

ECOPA-17

She could see the Japanese Southern Alps covered with snow in the north!

ECOPA-18

There are actually 1 blue type and 3 yellow types of beautiful manhole covers commemorating Ecopa!
The above, the only blue type, is for “communications”

ECOPA-19

Yellow type for electricity!

ECOPA-20

You can’t miss them!

ECOPA-21

Yellow type for rain waters!

ECOPA-22

A yellow sewer type!

ECOPA-23

She also this fire hydrant manhole cover which can be seen all over the Prefecture with different city motifs, but interestingly enough, this particular bears the Shizuoka Prefecture motif!

ECOPA-24

She also found this tiny blue valve pit cover with the Shizuoka Prefecture motif!

ECOPA-25

An imposing double yellow type for rain waters!

ECOPA-26

Next time you go and watch a soccer game there, you’ll know where to find them!
