West Coast Brewing Beer Bar “12” in Shizuoka City!

From outside!

From the standing bar!

Service: very friendly and informative,. English and Spanish speaking staff on hand.
Equipment & Facilities: Spotless clean. Superb gender separated washrooms. Completely non-smoking.
Prices: reasonable to slightly expensive (Craft beers are never cheap! LOL)
Strong points: Own craft beers, regular and limited editions. Collaboration beers from time to time. Great craft beer explanations on hand! Beer bar food well above average.

“12”, the leading West Coast Brewing (Mochimune, Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City) bar was moved to a new address on March 12th, 2020, to accommodate more faithful customers in a more spacious multi purpose locale almost next door to the smaller original bar behind Ogushi Shrine, not far from Shuzoka JR station in Koyamachi!

Friends of mine sitting at one of the live evenings space tables!

The present concept is vastly different and the accent is on space and comfort for all tastes!
There is a very long counter for those who prefer to stand and move according to the presence of friends!
There are tables of different sizes with comfortable sitting for more sedentary customers.

Plenty of sitting space in front of large bay windows which be left open in the better season!

A very long standing bar by Shizuoka City Standards!

And a luxury in Shizuoka City: an open air veranda!
You can be sure that for all my love of standing bars I will grab a seat there in the hotter season!

Big screens advertising beers on the taps!

For the canned beer lovers there is plenty to choose among beers and ciders from Seattle!

Do not worry, for the non beer drinking customers/friends there plenty indicated on a very practical menu book!

The craft beer part makes for great reading!
below is a sample of the craft beers i have recently tasted!

Star Watcher IPA!

White Wizard!

White Wizard explained!

Not Enough Bass!

Not Enough Bass explained!

Don’t worry, when I have more time I will come up with tasting article1

Now, when it comes to food, it is definitely well above average!
make sure to read the bilingual menu!

A favorite of mine: Fish and Chips with real fresh cod!

Between you and me, better than in Great Britain!

And from April top-class hamburger!
But this is for the next article!

Until then Cheers/Sante/Salute/Kampai!

Fujiyama Hunter’s Beer Tap Room in Fujinomiya City!

Service: shy but very kind and attentive if somewhat busy.
Equipment & facilities: overall very clean. Small but xcellent washroom.
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: Craft Beers of course, including regular, limited and guest beers! Also great local wild game cuisine when available! Venison (wiid deer) jerky!

Fujinomiya City is already famed all over Japan for its four sake breweries and now it counts not but two craft beer breweries located on both side of Sengen Shrine! As for Fujiyama Hunter’s Beer Tap Room located behind Sengen Shrine it is the official tap room of Farment Co. Ltd as the brewery and tap room are separate!

Farment Co. Produces three regular craft beers under the name of Fujiyama Hunter Beer!

All COD/Cash on Delivery system!

As for the clientele of this particular tap room it is more local than others, probably due to its almost hidden away location, but very authentic in atmosphere. Interestingly enough it seems to be very popular with local ladies (of all ages! lol)!

Very proud of their craft beers! (I will come to that later!)

As it was my first visit I naturally ordered the reasonably price tasting set!

The taps!

Their pride and joy! Local game/venison and wild boar cuisine! Unfortunately I came pretty late on Sunday afternoon and everything had already been eaten!

I had to settle for simpler fare!

The rest of the menu!I noticed, because maybe it was Sunday, that everyone asked for something to eat!

The regular craft beers are available in bottles under the names of Oppa, Yunomura and Morinotane.
As for other regular and limited crafts beers, they are 8fr the moment!) Peace Tea, Iri Got, Zan, …

Cha Mugi and Yabusame! Very thankful for detailed explanations!

Meaning I will have to go there again soon!

Mount Fuji Brewing in Fujinomiya City!

Service: shy but kind and attentive
Equipment & Facilities: Overall very clean, Superb washroom
Prices: reasonable to slightly expensive
Strong points superb craft beers! Excellent food, especially at lunch! Very spacy with nice views!

Fujinomiya City benefiting from untold amounts of best natural water thanks to the proximity to Mount Fuji, it was only a question of time for new beer breweries sprouting here and there!
I visited one of them recently, namely Mount Fuji Brewing! An easy name to remember, isn’t it?

The brewery including a vast restaurant is conveniently located near the entrance of Sengen Shrine, arguably the most important one in the Prefecture, meaning there crowds of thirsty visitors to satisfy! The beer is brewed inside the very precincts for all to see!

It also includes a vast restaurant patronized by beer lovers and families alike. Note the restaurant hours.
The food is definitely of a higher standard for the simple reason that Fujinomiya City is one of the most noted agricultural areas in the Prefecture, be it vegetables, meat or even fish (it is famous for its many kinds of trouts!)!

Take a good look at the beautiful menu, be it for drinks, food, or both!

If it is your first visit, I would definitely recommend a tasting set of at least three craft beers brewed on site!
They do also serve beers from other breweries on a collaboration basis!
Above is the set I chose!

Kuro Tobi Fuji/Black Kite (the bird!) Fuji! Stout, ABV 4.2, IBU 6!

Kooji Fuji! IPA, ABV 5.0, IBU 30.2!

Yamabuki Fuji! Pale Ale, ABV 5.0, IBU 15!

And don’t forget the food! Plenty of surprises in wait for you!
But that is for the next report! LOL

Shizuoka Prefecture is one of the largest citruses-producing Prefectures in Japan and grows many local varieties.
One is called “Harumi Mikan” and is grown in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!
Aoi Brewing could come up with this fruit beer thanks to the JA and Shizuoka Government cooperation.
It is a brew limited to 450 liters which necessitated the help of other brewers in Shizuoka Prefecture, a true local product!
Judging from the TV coverage and incredible popularity it will soon disappear, but hopefully it will become a regular annual feature!

SN3O0226
SN3O0226

Shizuoka Beer Breweries List (updated May 13th, 2015)

BAIRD-BEER-2

Shizuoka Beer Microbreweries is a great source for beer label collectors!

Thanks to its endless supply of incredible natural water Shizuoka Prefecture produces some of the best craft beers not only in Japan but in the world as witnessed by the success of Bryan Baird.
Unfortunately I could not find a comprehensive listing and introduction of the same breweries on the net and decided to fill up this void once for all!

Here is a simple map of Shizuoka Prefecture to help you locate the breweries!
The introduction of the breweries are below listed from west to east of Shizuoka Prefecture!

Yamaguchi Prefecture Beer Tasting: Yamaguchi Jibiru Brewery-Genpei Dannoura Stout

The other day a good friend of mine was kind enough to bring me this beer form the other side of Japan in Yamaguchi Prefecture!

SN3O0303

As its sale is limited to its own production region, that is, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, it’s the more valuable and I would found remiss if I didn’t report on its tasting!

SN3O0301

Ingredients: Barley malt, hop, yeast
Alcohol: 5’%
Unfiltered
Contents: 330 ml
Clarity: slightly smoky (normal considering live yeast and being unfiltered), very clean

Bubbles: very fine bubbles, creamy, long head, milk coffee color
Aroma: light and dry, bread, caramel
Taste: very refreshing and deep attack ending on a dry note with welcome acidity.
Dry caramel, bread, roasted oats, dry coffee beans.
Stays long enough on palate for true tasting before departing on a drier and more acid note.
Does not vary much with food.

Very satisfying. Great acidity.
A beer for all seasons for stout lovers.
Can be enjoyed slightly chilled or just below room temperature.

Shizuoka Beer Tasting: Kuraya-Narusawa Brewery-Hansharo Beer Nouhei Steam

Yesterday I had the occasion to taste a new beer by Kuraya-Narusawa, Izu no Kuni City, Izu peninsula, at AOI BEER STAND in Miyuki Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, as they often serve on tap beers by other Shizuoka Prefecture as a part of a constructive collaboration policy!

SN3O0273

The general name of beers produced by Kuraya-Narusawa Brewery are called Hansharo after the name of the ancient gun foundry of the same name standing inside their precincts.
They are a noteworthy brewery as they do experiment a lot, as far as to reproduce old style beer.
This particular beer is a steam beer reminiscent of what some German immigrants brewed in the States when they didn’t have the money to buy expensive equipment. The beer then was brewed at environmental temperature, a long process using lager yeast to produce an ale type beer.
Anchor Steam in San Francisco is a brewery still using this method for some of their beers.

SN3O0274

Served on tap
Barley,hop,live yeast
Unfiltered
Alcohol: 5 %
Clarity: slightly smoky (normal considering live yeast and being unfiltered), very clean
Color: dark orange
Bubbles: shortish head, fine bubbles, light orange hue
Aroma: Fruity, dry oranges, citruses
Taste: Dry and deep attack.
Bread.
Great acidity, very refreshing.
Varies little with food.

Overall: Very refreshing beer. Does not need to be overchilled.
Thanks to its acidity one can drink it for a long time without getting tired of it.
A discovery!
