Vegan Cakes at LOCOMANI in Shizuoka City!

Service: Very friendly although a bit shy!
Equipment: Great overall cleanliness. Excellent washroom
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Inventive vegan menus. Healthy rice flour cakes.Mainly local products.

The other day I decided to visit my good friends at LOLCOMANI in Shizuoka City for coffee and cakes in the afternoon as lunches are always impossibly crowded, especially with ladies wishing for a healthy lunch offered by this reference vegan restaurant (I am no vegan, but I can appreciate from time to time, and it is always a pleasure to introduce it to my vegan friends!).
As for the cakes they tend to vary with the seasons and ingredients available, so make a point to check them beforehand.
If you cannot read the Japanese menu the owner’s wife will make it her pleasure to explain it in simple English!
As for the drink menu there is plenty to choose from the organic coffees and tea and the home-made vegan fruit drinks!

Chocolate cake!
All cakes are basically made with rice flour in case of some clients being wheat flour allergic!

For a better view with its soymilk cream and sweet nuts sauce!

Organic Coffee!
Actually LOCOMANI’s teas and coffees are well above average, although a bit weak for some, but well-balanced and tasty!

Half cakes set!
LOCMANI have a policy to have their clients taste as many of their cakes as possible. So instead of ordering a full serving of one cake, you can combine two half servings for better enjoyment!

Chiffon cake!

Fruit cake!

For vegans and others with a sweet tooth but mindful of their health!

Keep your eyes open as it is easy to miss!

Vegan gastronmy seems to have acquired its letters in Shizuoka City as one more establishment opened last week in Takajo, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!
That makes no less than four of them now (one closed due to the pregnancy of its owner!)!
It is difficult to miss, so follow the indications carefully: go up Kitakado Street till Mizuochi Intersection (you will see a police box on the left-hand side). Turn right. You will find their sign on the right hand-side. If you haven’t found it before the first street on the left walk back!

SN3O0162

Walk upstairs. Panchavati is on your right-hand side!

SN3O0163

The building is a bit ancient but the restaurant is very clean with one counter and three tables. And it’s entirely non-smoking!

SN3O0164

The menu icludes two set menus, one curry plate, desserts and drinks.
All the vegetables used in the recipes are natural or organic and local.
The food is all vegan, including dessert!

SN3O0165

Organic wine!

SN3O0166

SN3O0167

SN3O0168

SN3O0171

Steamed or boiled vegetables with sake white lees/sakekasu dip sauce, potato and rape flowers croquettes with sweet carrot sauce!

Looking at the Chef Ken Tanaka/田中健さん’s vegan cakes I couldn’t help ordering one!

SN3O0172

Cute cake!

SN3O0173

Kinako/soy bean flour pound cake!

I’m no vegan, but I can assure you I was full with all that healthy food!

SN3O0174

Even if you are not a vegan, it is still very tasty healthy healthy food to enjoy from time to time!

SN3O5408

Yesterday walking along Genan Street in Ryogae=cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, I couldn’t help notice this board at street level!

SN3O5409

Cuisine using no meta, fish, dairy products, nor eggs!
Well, well, Shziuoka City seems to have taken a special like for vegan gastronomy as this is the ofurth one I have discovered!

SN3O5410

Actually I found out later that Ms. Akino Yabutani/藪谷安希乃さんopened her restaurant 2 years ago, making Cafe Sain (“Sain” stands for “Healthy” in French!) the second oldest vegan Restaurant & Cafe in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5411

I knew my hunch had been correct when I discovered the beautiful vegan cakes in their display window as I entered the establishment!

SN3O5412

Although there are quite a few choices of single dishes or set I opted for the Vegan Quiche Lunch Set!

SN3O5413

Comforting hot soup on a cold day!

SN3O5414

Konnyaku with carrots and walnuts, and sauteed mushrooms!

SN3O5415

Plenty of fresh lettuce served with home-made dressing!

SN3O5416

Really yummy vegetables quiche!

SN3O5417

Fried beansprouts!

SN3O5418

And superb home-made bread for great total balance!

SN3O5419

Akino’s parents grow Benihoppe/red Cheeks Strawberries in Shizuoka City so these were picked in the morning to find themselves atop my cake!

SN3O5420

Soy milk whipped cream!

SN3O5421

I do have a real weakness for fruit tarts!

SN3O5422

Not only beautiful and tasty but also really satisfying!

I’m no vegan and never will be but I’ll come again!

SN3O5524

Service: A bit shy but very friendly and attentive
Facilities & Equipment: Superb cleanliness overall. Superb washroom
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: Exclusively vegan gastronomy. No wheat flour. Only mineral water used. Entirely non-smoking!

SN3O5517

At last the second independent vegan restaurant has just opened in Shizuoka City right in the middle of the city along the Aoba Street!

SN3O5518

The name “Kissa” means “Cafe” in Japanese and “Cat” in Finnish, the real reason for the restaurant’s name!

SN3O5519

The menu bound to change with the seasons is clearly announced outside!

SN3O5520

The staff are shy but very friendly and attentive!

SN3O5521

you can choose between a seat (chair or sofa) at a table or at a small counter!

SN3O5522

And the place is so clean!
May I remind you it is totally non-smoking!

SN3O5523

Another kissa/cat!

SN3O5536

This must be the healthiest restaurant in Shizuoka City as they don’t use white sugar, wheat flour, eggs, dairy products and cook only in mineral water!

SN3O5524

This is the lunch (Japanese-style) that I ordered!

SN3O5535

And the tea that they serve is organic and has been matured from 3 years, making it lose most of its caffeine!

SN3O5533

The organic tea!

SN3O5525

Steamed white rice mixed with black/violet rice.
Incidentally all the vegetables, including the rice are organic whenever possible!

SN3O5526

Stewed Takano tofu and vegetables!

SN3O5527

Vegetables and tofu miso soup!

SN3O5528

Home-made pickles!

SN3O5529

Fresh vegetables salad. The broccoli is grown by the owner in her own garden!

SN3O5530

Persimmon and apple in tofu cream sauce!

SN3O5531

Konnyaku!

SN3O5532

The owner, knowing I had a special interest in her cuisine because of some of my friends who are vegan (I’m not) offered me her minestrone vegetable soup (only vegetables)! Very tasty indeed!

SN3O5534

While I was at it I ordered a dessert not waiting for tea time!
Their anko/sweet meat is home-made!
They do not use sugar but “karanka/Siraitia grosvenorii” whose fruit is 300 times sweeter and is recommended to diabetics!

SN3O5537

The dessert!

SN3O5538

Beautiful and very satisfying! Incidentally the jelly is made with local agar! Did you know that Shizuoka is a major producer of natural agar in Japan?

I’ll keep you posted about the different menus!

SN3O4800

I also noticed that a young couple of local potters living in Mori Machi, Kakegawa City, were exhibiting and selling some exquisite pottery!

SN3O4801

I understand that interviewing will quite a challenge as they usually do allow it, but I’m confident I will succeed. Their art is just too good to ignore!

SN3O4802

There was a choice but since Mrs. Miho Maki/牧美穂さん recommended her veggie burger, I didn’t hesitate!

SN3O4803

Her vegan soy milk based soup would please anyone with a health-conscious and epicurian mind! I particularly love the ginger included in it and the herbs sprinkled on top!

The (small) Rama Group which has been serving for some time vegan food inside the home of some of their members in the south of Shizuoka City at last on August 6th opened a real Cafe & Shop in Gennan Street, Gofuku-Cho, Aoi Ku, in the middle of the city for the pleasure of all vegans and health food lovers!

SN3O4754

I’m no vegan myself, but I do appreciate it from time to time, and I’m really happy for my friends and visitors to Shizuoka City who have such priorities!

SN3O4759

The shop itself offers an enormous (by Japanese standards!) array of vegan, organic and macrobiotic foods including home-made jams….

SN3O4761

and pickles made with fruit and vegetables locally and organically grown.

SN3O4762

It is all set in a beautiful and very natural environment, the more for it as it is open as a Cafe all day long!

SN3O4758

The general design makes use of a lot of wood.
You can either sit a t tables, or in my case at the counter overlooking the street outside!

SN3O4760

The young owners at work1
Mr. Tomonari Maki/牧知成さん and Mrs. Miho Maki/牧美穂さん!

SN3O4756

As for the food served the lunch is unique but changes regularly depending on the seasonal ingredients.
They serve all kinds of drinks, including organic beer!
If you don’t speak Japanese speak slowly in English and I’m sure mutual understanding will be easy!

SN3O4767

The lunch of the day!
Very appetizing, indeed!
As far as I know this is the sole truly vegan restaurant in town, and probably in the whole prefecture

SN3O4766

The hot soup!
No dairy products is used whatsoever!

SN3O4764

It is not only healthy but has a beautiful cachet attached to it!
