Monjyu Yashiro (文殊社神社) & Atago (愛宕神社) Shrines in Sakurabashi Chyo in Shimizu Ku, Shziuoka City!

If you board the Shizutetsu railway Line from Cenova department Store in Aoi Ku, shizuoka City towards Shimizu Ku, get off at Sakurabashi (桜橋駅) Station and walk above and across the Railway Line on your left and you will discover an isolated old shrine!

SN3O0224

Actually, like many other shrines in Japan, you will find not one, but two shrines!

SN3O0226

This fairly new post indicates that it is a 村社/sonjya or village shinto shrine!

SN3O0227

This is a very old shrine, indeed, dating back to Japan Feudal Era!

SN3O0228

A real stone hand-washing basin!

SN3O0229

The main shrine!

SN3O0230

Venerable trees is a sure sign of the old age of the shrine!

SN3O0231

Now I wonder what that very heavy metal lid is for? Probably the cover of a big fireplace for festivals?

SN3O0232

Elegant stone lantern!

SN3O0233

With the cloud and deer carvings as found in many other shrines!

SN3O0234

And a mountain carving!

SN3O0235

The other lantern seemed a lot older!

SN3O0236

The lantern is just too old to figure out what that carving represents!

SN3O0237

Now, that stone lantern is really new!

SN3O0238

A “smiling” lion guard on the left!

SN3O0239

Its “roaring” companion on the right!

SN3O0240

The main shrine with its rice straw garland, its bell and its wooden money offerings box!

SN3O0241

Monjyu Yashiro/文殊社 shrine!

SN3O0247

The smaller and older shrine behind it!

SN3O0248

Pity that such shrines at the back are unusually inaccessible!

SN3O0249

From the other side!

SN3O0250

The names of old benefactors!

SN3O0242

This old shrine is not dedicated t the same deities!

SN3O0243

This shrine dates back from the Tokugawa Ieyasu Lord Era!

SN3O0244

Atago/愛宕 shrine!

SN3O0245

Now, this is a truly old tree!

SN3O0246

No wonder it is considered as a natural cultural asset by the City of Shizuoka!

Sonsha Ooi Shrine (村社大井神社) & Sui Shrine (水神社) in Shimada City!

If you take the Ikumi Line/伊久身線 in Shimada City you will notice a torii gate at the foot of a long stone stairway next to Mukaiaisuimon/向合水門 bus stop.

SN3O0277

At first I had surmised it was the location of a single shrine called Sonsha Ooi Shrine (村社大井神社) which can be translated to “Village Shrine under the jurisdiction of Ooi Shrine”

SN3O0278

The first torii gate at the foot of the flight of stairs!

SN3O0279

Actually there was a monument standing beside he same stairs!

SN3O0280

Probably marking the site of the original shrine!

SN3O0281

The stairs leading to the main shrine!

SN3O0282

Almost there!

SN3O0283

The main shrine!

SN3O0284

A real stone hand washing basin under its own roof!

SN3O0285

A very old wood money offerings box!

SN3O0286

The roof seemed in good enough repair!

SN3O0287

Walking around the main shrine I noticed something else behind.
Nothing surprising as very often bigger buildings are built in front of the original shrine to restrict the access!

SN3O0288

Can you see it?

SN3O0289

Access completely blocked from there!

SN3O0290

Try as I may I wouldn’t reach it that way!

SN3O0291

Neither from the left hand side!

SN3O0292

That is when I found a path leading up on the left!

SN3O0293

Trekking around it!

SN3O0294

The roof of the original shrine behind the main building!

SN3O0295

From a precarious height I could somehow see the largest part of it!

SN3O0296

I even managed to get down around it only to be blocked by a surrounding wall!

SN3O0297

I could also get an aerial view of the roof of the main building!

SN3O0298

A typical moon and sun stone lantern!

SN3O0299

Old wood!

SN3O0300

I’m afraid that is how far one can go barring a housebreak!

SN3O0301

I decided to walk back and down around it!

SN3O0302

A last glance!

SN3O0303

I had to tread carefully!

SN3O0304

Instead of cutting back along my steps I decided to walk more to the right along another narrow path. That is when I discovered the second shrine!

SN3O0305

Usual rice straw garland but unusual metal money offerings box!

SN3O0306

A different style of stone lantern!

SN3O0307

Another smaller and older shrine!

SN3O0308

Down a modern flight of stairs!

SN3O0309

What do we have here?

SN3O0310

The name of the shrine by the stone hand washing basin under a roof!
Sui Shrine (水神社)!

SN3O0311

It does not look as as impressive as the shrine it is supposed to look after!

SN3O0312

Same stone lantern as above!

SN3O0313

Its torii gate!

SN3O0314

The bridge leading to it!

SN3O0315

A quaint shrine!

SN3O0316

Good-bye, sui Shrine!

SN3O0317

Walking around back to the original entrance!

SN3O0318

How long has that tree been there?

SN3O0319

Good-bye Sonsha Ooi Shrine!

Floating Shinto Shrine in Shimada City!

If you ride along the Ikumi Line/伊久身線 in Shimada City you will discover a small new shnto shrine near the Dai Ichi Shogakou/第一小学校 bus stop!

SN3O0324

You can’t miss it as it is located near a cemetery amenities shop!

SN3O0327

It might be small but the bright white and red colors peek through the trees!

SN3O0328

You will see it across the street!

SN3O0329

This is the Shinto Shrine with its torii gate in front!

SN3O0330

But the building beside it is a Buddhist Temple!
It is not rare in Japan to find the two faiths cohabiting peacefully!

SN3O0331

The Temple is not that big but it is old although someone lives inside!

SN3O0332

Many temples and shrines share the same architectural characteristics!

SN3O0333

Interestingly enough the shrine, although it bears no visible name, has two different torii ates!

SN3O0334

A typical shrine color in Japan although it might vary between light orange and red purpleRE!

SN3O0335

But this one is very new!

SN3O0336

You are easily excused if you think at first this all the same religious site!

SN3O0337

The small temple is really old but its roofing is in good repair!

SN3O0338

But the rest of it might need some work!

SN3O0339

The walls areas simple as they can be!

SN3O0340

But I wouldn’t change the pinions!

SN3O0341

Taking a last peek around the building!

SN3O0325

Good-bye, “floating shrine”!

Ooi Uami Shrine (大井鵜網神社)in Shimada City!

I was walking down along the Ikumi River in the north east of Shimada City when I found this small shrine just beside Uami bus stop.
I couldn’t find its name mentioned until I met a grand lady almost as advanced in years as the strange alien man who spoke to her in Japanese. It must have been quite an event for her and she kindly, giggling all he time, explained that this particular shrine was under the jurisdiction of the very big Ooi Shrine in the center of Shimada City.
Although the Ikumi River is only a branch river of the Ooi River it benefits from the aura of its bigger elder.

SN3O0254

As demonstrated by the somewhat drab rice straw garland there are many people able to look after it these days….

SN3O0255

SN3O0255

In its heydays worshipers must have felt solemn walking u the stairs between venerable cedar trees!

SN3O0256

It was a blazing hot day and even the stairs were welcome in the cool shade!

SN3O0257

A somewhat lonely hand washing stone basin!

SN3O0258

Almost there!

SN3O0259

The great thing about these shrines lost in the country is that they also include smaller and far older, and arguably more authentic shrines that were truly erected by locals!

SN3O0260

Who built this ages ago?

SN3O0261

Did descendants built this fairly new one!

SN3O0262

Now this minuscule stone shrine was erected before our era!

SN3O0263

The main shrine!

SN3O0264

An ancient money offerings wooden box!

SN3O0265

Meager rice straw garland!

SN3O0266

But a peek inside proved it is still actively worshiped!

SN3O0267

it is actually in good repair!

SN3O0269

But I feel more attracted to the smaller ones!

SN3O0270

The most venerated cedar tree of the site!

SN3O0271

Slowly walking back downstairs but trying to keep in the shade as long as possible!

SN3O0272

A rice straw garland lining two trees is quite unusual!

SN3O0273

Very old stairs indeed!

SN3O0274

Blazing summer afternoon!

SN3O0275

Good-bye, Ooi Shrine in Uami!

Hachiman Shrine (八幡神社) in Kawaguchi, Shimada City!

If you board a bus on the Ikumi Line/伊久身線 in Shimada City and go down at a bus stop called Yama Ie/山家, walk across the bridge and you will find this shrine on your right at the next crossroads!

SN3O0208

Although the name ”八幡” is usually pronounced “Hyahatta”, the locals call the shrine “Hachiman”!

SN3O0209

An old and a bit lonely stone hand washing basin!

SN3O0210

The main shrine!

SN3O0211

Big and fairly new stone lantern!

SN3O0212

Venerable cedar tree!

HACHIMAN-6a

Walking nearer…

SN3O0214

The left lion guard!

SN3O0215

Not really smiling…

SN3O0216

With a paw resting on the back of a small lion!

SN3O0217

The roaring lion guard on the right!

SN3O0218

With its paw resting atop a globe!

SN3O0219

No money offerings box?

SN3O0220

I discovered a smaller shrine on the left!

SN3O0221

It has a small wooden money offerings box!

SN3O0222

Actually the real shrine like in many other places is behind the main building!

SN3O0223

Sometimes I wonder why they are not readily accessible!

SN3O0224

Doors secured with an old-fashioned lock!

SN3O0225

The roofing is in good repair!

SN3O0226

Seen through the main building sliding doors (locked!)!

SN3O0227

There was another small ancient shrine to be found on the right!

SN3O0228

With its own money offerings box!

SN3O0229

A better view from that angle actually!

SN3O0230

It was a blazing hot day!

SN3O0232

A last look at the main building!

SN3O0231

Good-bye, Hachiman!

This fairly old on eis located in Shiuzoka City, Aoi Ku, Kamiasharai, right in front of a Shizutetsu Supermarket of all places!

It was first built in 1770 for a God called Takeshi Uchi No Sukune No Mikoto and its festivals are held on New Year’s day, in June and on the 17th of October!

SN3O0185

The “original” monument!

SN3O0186

As I said its torii gate is quite new!

SN3O0187

Shirahige Shrine (白髭神社)!

An old but small and lonely stone hand washing basin….

SN3O0189

two stone lanterns differing only in small details!

A mountain for both of them!

SN3O0191

An unusual cloud and a prone deer!

SN3O0192

But the deer here is standing!

SN3O0193

No, this is not the main shrine!

SN3O0194

Some of the space in this shrine was used to build a Community Hall!

SN3O0195

“The Shrine is at the back!”

SN3O0196

A venerable tree is standing witness!

SN3O0197

You will find a small shrine at the foot of the tree!

Ooi Shrine (大井神社) in Shimada City (2): Ooi Ebisu Shrine (大井恵比寿神社)

Ooi Shrine (大井神社) in Shimada City within walking distance from Shimada JR station north exit is actually a group of shrines more or less dedicated to the Ooi River, a major river in Japan that travelers had to cross with the help of porters until the end of the Edo Era.
The one shrine I singled out this time is called Ooi Ebisu (大井恵比寿) as it is dedicated both to to the Oi Reiver and Ebisu God!

SN3O0172

I couldn’t find its founding date but it is quite old, even by Japanese standards!

SN3O0173

The roofing is in perfect condition although I suspect it must have been rebuilt many a time through the ages!

SN3O0174

Imposing lantern!

SN3O0175

It is particularly impressive at dusk!

SN3O0176

A new stone lantern standing by a venerable tree!

SN3O0179

This old bridge is open only on special occasions!

SN3O0177

Pity it is closed. I would have liked to investigate the interior!

SN3O0169

Very peaceful atmosphere in the evenings!

SN3O0170

Another ancient “monument”…

SN3O0178

I’ll be back soon, old tree!

Kanza Ooi Shrine (神座大井神社) in Shimada City!

Finding a shrine can be sometimes confusing for a new visitor to Japan!

SN3O0126

The other day I took the bus of the Ikumi Line/Ikumisen/伊久身線 from Shimada Station North exit bus stop.
I got down at a stop called Kanza Miya Iriguchi/神座宮入口, meaning “Entry/Entrance/Iriguchi” to Kanza Shrine/Kanza Miya”.
The problem is that Jinjya/神社 and Miya/宮 (can also be pronounced “Gu”!) both mean “shrine”!
Incidentally as the line is heavily subsidized by the City it is very cheap, but there is only one bus every hour!

SN3O0153

To make matters a bit more complicated the whole shrine is dedicated to the River Ooi, hence the inclusion of its name, whereas the main shrine inside is only called Ooi Shrine!

SN3O0128

A very rural but solemn atmosphere in the cool tree shades by a scorching hot day!

SN3O0129

The hand-washing stone basin under its own roof!

SN3O0130

A very old “monument” probably predating everything around!

SN3O0131

The main shrine!

SN3O0132

Venerable trees all around!

SN3O0133

The guard lion seems a bit different!

SN3O0134

It is different indeed!

SN3O0135

Not only the paint but the style make it unusual!

SN3O0136

The big stone lanterns have been apparently added not so long ago!

SN3O0137

We can’t forget the other lion guard!

SN3O0138

An impressive roar!

SN3O0139

The main shrine!

SN3O0140

Lion guards on the roof of a Shinto shrine are unusual!

SN3O0141

The money offerings wooden box!

SN3O0142

The rice straw garland!

SN3O0143

The old plaque clearly states “Ooi Jinja/大井神社/Ooi River shrine”!

SN3O0145

Always look behind a shrine and you might find smaller and far older ones!

SN3O0146

Such small shrines are very probably more authentic as they were erected by small farming communities!

SN3O0147

In Kyoto and large cities they would have all but disappeared, thus erasing real history!

SN3O0148

These foxes confirm this is an “inari/稲荷” shrine to help rice crops!

SN3O0149

Walking around the other side of the main shrine!

SN3O0150

Here is another one!

SN3O0151

Poor little thing!

SN3O0152

Good-bye, kanza Ooi Shrine!

Suijinsan Shrine (水神社) in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

There are many shrines in the Tomoe Rvier and the Jiroucho areas as they were nearer to the sea and the harbor in the old times.

SN3O0006

The torri gate!

SN3O0007

Although the name written on the torii gate plaque reads “みず神社/Mizu Jinja”, the locals prefer to call it “Suijinsan”!

SN3O0026

There is a second torii gate with the the same name on its plaque!

SN3O0008

Two fairly recent stone lanterns stand on both side of a signboard!

SN3O0009

The shrine was built between 1624 and 1643 and its festival is held on the 25th of June!

SN3O0010

The second stone lantern!

SN3O0011

The main shrine!

SN3O0012

The stone hand-washing basin under its roof!

SN3O0013

The “smiling” lion guard!

SN3O0014

The roaring lion guard!

SN3O0015

The wooden money offerings box and the bell rope!

SN3O0016

Can you see the bell?

SN3O0019

The worshipers ring the bell by shaking (not pulling) the rope, before prayers!

SN3O0017

The guarding lion and wild boar under the eaves!

SN3O0018

“Wild boars” do very much look like “elephants” sometimes but the ears give them away, although this is very debatable!

SN3O0025

Their golden eyes are also unusual!

SN3O0021

That tree must have witnessed a lot of history!

SN3O0022

A back slanted view of the second shrine behind the main shrine!

SN3O0023

Great roofing!

SN3O0027

The two shrines with roofs looking like waves!

SN3O0020

Good-bye, Suijinsan!

Nishinomiya Shrine (西宮神社) & Masa Ichi Inari Shrine (正一位稲荷神社) in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

Shinto shrines in Japan very often are associated with other shrines, especially in harbor cities where the locla worshipoers like to combine them for better fortune.
The other day before I reported on a local festival I found these two shrines in Shimizu Ku (formerly Shimizu City) in Shizuoka City, near Jirochou, one of the oldest and most tradtional areas of the town.

SN3O0030

The main entrance through the torii gate.

SN3O0031

The name plaque having disappeared I was a bit confused about its name first!

SN3O0032

Fortunately a placard was there for explantions!
The shrine name is Nishinomiya/西宮神社. It also has the second name of Abessan and is deicated to the God Ebisu.
It was built between 1596 and 1614!

SN3O0033

A stone lantern has all but disappeared!

SN3O0034

Apparently, its lion guards have also disappeared!

SN3O0035

The main shrine!

SN3O0036

The money offerings wooden box and the rice straw garland are nonetheless well looked after!

SN3O0037

At least the lion guards still strive under the eaves!

SN3O0038

And gracefully laughing!

SN3O0039

The ame of the shrine is clearly written!

SN3O0040

You will find the second smaller shrine on the right!

SN3O0041

Masa Ichi Inari Shrine (正一位稲荷神社)!

SN3O0042

All shrines bearing the name of Inari/稲荷/rice bag, have fox guards!

SN3O0043

Apparently they have to be protected from theft!
Theft is rare in this country, but I noticed many fox statues being protected in the same way!

SN3O0044

The small shrine!

SN3O0045

The rice straw garland is regularly replaced!

SN3O0048

A symbol of prosperity!

SN3O0046

The doors of the shrine were padlocked for a good reason!

SN3O0047

No one wants these cute foxes stolen!

Kataoka Sumiyoshi Shrine (片岡住吉神社) in Yoshida Cho!

Sometimes you have to keep your eyes open!
I was riding the bus to Shizunami in Yoshida Cho and was nearing my destination when I noticed this shrine our of the window.
I noted the bus stop and on my way back I alighted to investigate!

SN3O0096

It looked quite impressive for a “local” shrine!
Actually I had the luck to meet its resident “kanshi/priest” who provided me with many an interesting point.
In fact, they are going to hold their annual festival this Sunday, meaning a second trip there!

SN3O0097

A beautiful stone lantern!

SN3O0127

Unusual motif!

SN3O0099

I was a bit confused at the different names of the shrine.
The name written on the torii gate, “Sumiyoshi” is actually the name of the god venerated there, whereas the name of the shrine is Kataoka!

SN3O0098

I’ve been to other shrines also called Sumiyoshi, in shizuoka City in particular, and I started to understand because of similarities.
For example this guarding lion!

SN3O0101

He has his paw resting on a smaller lion!

SN3O0100

And the other guarding lion!

SN3O0102

His paw is resting on a ball!

SN3O0139

I was told that the main shrine was built 100 years or more ago, but some of the streets are found in records dating back to the 1640’s!

SN3O0103

The shrine is definitely of importance as it includes a preliminary roofed gate with guarding lodges!

SN3O0104

Getting nearer!

SN3O0105

it clearly states the name of Kataoka Shrine!

SN3O0106

The tiny right-hand side guard in its minuscule lodge!

SN3O0107

His companion on the left!

SN3O0108

The roofed hand washing stone basin!

SN3O0109

The proper way to wash your hands!

SN3O0110

A real boulder for a basin!

SN3O0111

This shrine was erected mainly for the protection of local sailors and fishermen as demonstrated by this giant oyster!

SN3O0112

The main shrine!

SN3O0113

Beautiful urn!

SN3O0114

The rice straw garland has been replaced anew!

SN3O0115

Lion and wild boar guard!

SN3O0116

And a dragon giving a hand!

SN3O0117

“Kataoka Shrine”!

SN3O0118

The money offerings box!

SN3O0119

No less than three portable shrines being readied for the coming festival!

SN3O0120

The festival drum!

SN3O0121

Crested curtain!

SN3O0122

This fishing boat was donated to the Shrine by the Fishing Companies Owners Association!

SN3O0123

Bearing the name of “Sumiyoshi”!

SN3O0124

A last look at the roofing!

SN3O0125

Making my way back home!
Actually the kanushi even offered me a drive!

SN3O0126

See you again on Sunday!

Miwa Shrine (三輪神社) in Shizuoka City!

As I was cycling along the Abe River in Shimo (下), Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, I barely noticed this torii gate on my right against the wooded slope!

SN3O0034

Naturally I turned back, got off my bicycle and started exploring the alley between old cedars past the torii gate!

SN3O0035

What is that in the distance?

SN3O0036

Getting nearer!

SN3O0037

A hand-washing stone basin and its awning!

SN3O0038

Very unusual hand washing stone basin!

SN3O0051

i discovered an older and smaller flight of stairs almost hidden on the right!

SN3O0052

An older and smaller shrine!

SN3O0053

The rice straw garland proves it is still much venerated!

SN3O0054

The roofing is in good repair!

SN3O0055

Looking down at the main shrine!

SN3O0056

Robust roofing there, too!

SN3O0057

Pleasant atmosphere!

SN3O0058

Many old names of local faithfuls!

SN3O0059
