Hachimangu Shrine (八幡宮神社) in Shimada City (Rokugo JR Station)!

SN3O0067

If you get off at Rokugo Station/六合駅 between Fujieda City and Shimada City JR Stations, go out through the south exit and you will find one of the five Shinto Shrines called Hachimangu in Shimada City!

SN3O0068

Stone lantern at the main gate

It is quite small but ancient.
Its small park seems popular with the local lovers who don’t have many places to talk in peace in this islated part of Shimada City!

SN3O0069

Moon and crescent motif openings of the the front gate stone lanterns!

SN3O0070

The roofed hand washing stone basin!

SN3O0072

Like any shrine, it is surrounded with old trees, not that remarkable, except for an old cherry tree with pure white blossoms!

SN3O0071

The main shrine building!

SN3O0075

Different and probably older stone lanterns!

SN3O0079

The deer and cloud motifs!

SN3O0080

The mountain motif!

SN3O0076

Like many other shrines, a more recent building stands in front of the original shrine whose access is guarded.

SN3O0077

The money offering box and the praying bell and rope!

SN3O0078

A bit too thin rice straw garland, but an interesting wooden motif!

SN3O0084

Taking a peek inside!

SN3O0081

A side view of both roofs!

SN3O0082

I couldn’t figure out what this roof decoration meant!

SN3O0083

Classical pinion motif!

SN3O0085

Good-bye, Hachimangu shrine!

Sengen Shrine in Hattori Honcho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City

The other day I was looking for another Shinto Shrine in Hattori Honcho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City. along the Warashina River and actually lost my way. That is when I discovered this small but ancient Shinto Shrine!

SN3O0298

The torii gate.

Fortunately I met an old lady cleaning the place who told me this Shirine was called Sengen for a good reason: it is actually the original location of the big Sengen Shrine which was moved a long time ago to the center of Shizuoka City!

SN3O0300

The stone had washing basin!

SN3O0301

A very old basin indeed!

SN3O0302

I discovered an old stone lantern by an even older votive stone between two grand trees!

SN3O0308

A deer!
Interestingly enough it was carved with the same patterns as the stone lanterns found found in Komagata Shrines in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O0309

Clouds!

SN3O0310

Mountains!

SN3O0303

I was also told that some of the pine trees around are well above 500 years old!

SN3O0306

Even their top broken some are really tall!

SN3O0307

And really thick!

SN3O0304

The shrine itself is of medium size and old, but very simple, although in good repair!!

SN3O0305

“Sengen Shrine” above a well-maintained rice straw rope garland!

Sumiyoshi Shinto Shrine (住吉神社) in Shizuoka City!

I found this small shinto shrine in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, not that far from the center of town.
It is old and partly derelict, but still interesting!

SN3O0274

The old plaque on the torii gate proves it was of a certain importance in the past!

SN3O0275

Not so old stone lanterns guard the entrance beyond the torii gate.

SN3O0276

There is still another partly broken really ancient stone lantern!

SN3O0277

An old stone hand washing basin is till there, too!

SN3O0289

Unfortunately it is not in good repair!

SN3O0290

But the locals still use it for their summer festival held June 19th~July 1st!

SN3O0278

It is a pity that some people use its precincts as an ugly car park!

SN3O0279

Small but beautiful figures on the roof!

SN3O0280

More of them!

SN3O0281

I’ve seen that money offerings box crest in many other shrines!

SN3O0282

But this is what interests me most!

SN3O0284

A dragon!

SN3O0286

Interrogative eyes!

SN3O0285

Long tendrils!

SN3O0288

The guarding lions!

SN3O0283

Very similar to the ones found in nearby Komagata Shrine!

SN3O0287

Will come back end of June!

Komagata Shrine (駒形神社) in Shizuoka City!

I’m cycling past this shrine at least once a week!
It is called Komagata Shrine/Komagata Jinja/駒形神社, of the same name of the area found in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O0308

Like most Shinto Shrines of some importance it guarded by two lions, one”smiling”,…

SN3O0309

and one “roaring”!

SN3O0310

It is a very old shrine dating back to the Heian era, some 1200 years ago!
These very old stones may have been erected for some celebrated locals!

SN3O0312

Of course you have to walk through a torii gate. This one is quite recent.

SN3O0311

On the other hand the two large stone lanterns were a lot older!

SN3O0330

They both bore identical carvings of a mountain,…

SN3O0331

a cloud,…

SN3O0332

and a deer!

SN3O0320

There were two more smaller stone lanterns bearing the same carvings!

SN3O0333

The deer!

SN3O0334

The cloud!

SN3O0335

And the mountains!

SN3O0313

It also included a small basin for ritual hand washing!

SN3O0314

With a small but beautiful Dragon spout!

SN3O0315

Unusually long horns!

SN3O0316

Surging forth out of nowhere!

SN3O0317

Although very old it was rebuilt in its present form about 430 years ago!

SN3O0318

An old votive stone!

SN3O0319

The Shrine Building!

SN3O0321

The money offerings box and its crest!

SN3O0322

A traditional corded rice straw garland made of stone!

SN3O0324

More guarding lions!

SN3O0325

A flying monster over the garland!

SN3O0326

Another Dragon!

SN3O0327

Komagata Shrine!

SN3O0328

Festival drum painted with the same crest!

SN3O0329

Unusual Shrine altar inside!

Myoonbensenten Shrine in Kyoto City

As I said before it is a good idea to keep your eyes open in Kyoto while forgetting the big toursit attractioons at the same time! You can take photographs in peace and check everything without disturbing anyone!

I found this small shrine in Kyoto City which had a nice little dragon!

SN3O0086

It is also called “Myoonten/妙音天”!

SN3O0084

The main shrine!

SN3O0085

There was also another newer but smaller one with many foxes!

SN3O0080

But that beautiful lonely dragon was the main attraction for me!

SN3O0081

Not that big, but really exquisite!

SN3O0082

Surging forth out of nowhere!

SN3O0083

A grand way to wash your hands!

Seorido Shrine in Miho, Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City!

When it comes to Shinto Shrines Shizuoka Prefecture is big enough and has enough history to provide visitors with discoveries. Shinto Shrines are never that big here, except for a very few, but they are many, and unfortunately most are forgotten, but the more mysterious for it.
I’m not a religious man, but I love architecture, art and history, and the discovery of the smallest detail can be more fulfilling than visiting grandiose but crowded monuments in world famous touristic spots!

SN3O0253

The other day cycling along a road parallel to the Miho Beach in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, I discovered this shrine out of the blue.
Built no less than 1200 years ago, it goes under the ame of Seorido Shrine/瀬織戸神社.
Also called Bentensama/辨天様, it is dedicated to the Shinto Godess Seoritsuhime/瀬織津姫 and is devoted to the welfare of fishermen among others.

SN3O0254

Like any shinto shrine the access paved lane climbs up the small hill under a torii gate.

SN3O0255

Although the paved land around it of origin it must have built all over again many times!

SN3O0256

The main shrine building!

SN3O0257

Looking at the back locals still take good care of it!

SN3O0258

It is always a good idea to look at the eaves of such buildings as they reveal old parts!

SN3O0259

You realize that the whole place is built of bits and pieces from different eras!

SN3O0260

My eyes felt attracted to this very small shrine, some parts f which are definitely of another era!

SN3O0261

“See no evil, hear no evil, say no evil!”

SN3O0262

I carefully replaced the offered rice crackers after photographing!

SN3O0263

On old lady must have left this 1 yen coin as an offering!

SN3O0264

Lady worshipers should have a good look at his sign!
It says that if they participate to the shrine festival they will become beautiful (i will leave the translation to the locals!)!
