Gastronomic Wine Bar: “BEBER” in Hamamatsu City!

BEBER-6

Service: Smiling, friendly and very attentive
Equipment & Facilities: Overall spotless clean. Small but beautiful washroom
Prices: Reasonable~a little expensive
Strong points International wine list. Japanese whiskeys including one from Shizuoka Prefecture. High standard Chinese cuisine. Bistro gastronomy

BEBER-11

With the ever increasing number of visitors, the City of Hamamatsu City is quickly changing and you do need local friends’ help to keep abreast of the new developments!
One such establishment is BEBER which opened only a few weeks ago!
Incidentally “beber” in Portuguese means “drink”!

BEBER-10

A good friend, himself restaurateur, took us there last Thursday just before it got crowded by all kinds of customers, some of them really influential citizens in Hamamatsu City.
It does not prevent the Master of the Place, Mr. Toshio Iguchi/井口敏郎さん, to be equally attentive and welcoming to all his customers, whatever the status!

BEBER-8

As it is first of all a wine bar, it does have a fine international list!
We started the celebrations with a “vino tinto” from Argentine, TERRAZAS de los Andes, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005!
Lots of red fruit! A discovery!
Have a good look at the drink menu as it also includes some fine whiskeys, even featuring “Fuji Sanroku” distilled in Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture!

BEBER-9

Chinese-style fresh salad!

Although they have all kinds of bistro favorites from terrine to foie gras, their chef is a talented Chinese Cuisine specialist whose creations are simply perfect with wines!

BEBER-7

Juicy Xiaolongbao/小龍包!

BEBER-2

A exquisite steamed dim sung with lettuce!

BEBER-3

Cold spicy ramen!

BEBER-4

The wine was quickly disappearing and we ordered this reliable Bourgogne Chardonnay (20139 by Jean Bouchard, not far from my very own birthplace!

BEBER-1

Now, this deep-fried chicken in sweet and sour sauce was definitely way above average!

BEBER-5

Talk about global gastronomy: Chinese-style fish and chips with cheese!
The British cannot come up with such a fine rendition!

A first but very short visit which will definitely warrant many more!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

Tasting Expensive Wines at Reasonable Prices at La Sommeliere in Shizuoka City!

Mrs. Hiromi Hasegawa/長谷川浩美さん, the owner of La Sommeliere Wines & Sake Bar in Miyuki Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City has initiated a remarkable if simple way to enjoy expensive wines at reasonable prices!

SN3O0145

For this she did have to invest in a special machine made in Italy (she is the first one to use such a device in the whole prefecture) that can pour out wine in three different volumes, 30, 60 and 90 ml!

SN3O0171

The present selection (it will change regularly according to availability) features the following:

Chateauneuf du Pape By Roger Sabon, White, 2012
Roussanne, Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Bourg Blanc grapes
A 5-tar producer on the Parker List.
An elegant wine with a full body and notes of honey, pears, Casablanca iris and white peach.
30 ml/1000 yen, 60 ml/1200 yen, 90 ml/1500 yen

Menetou Salon by Chavet Fils, White, 1999
Sauvignon Blanc grapes
Solid body with a complex approach, butter, nuts and honey
Still young in approach in spite of its 16 years of age!
30 ml/1000 yen, 60 ml/1200 yen, 90 ml/1600 yen

Beaune Domaine de Lagrange, red, 1989
Pinot Noir grapes grown on minimally pesticide-treated soil
A beautifully matured and aged red wine difficult to find on the market here in Japan.
30 ml/100 yen, 60 ml/1200 yen, 90 ml/1600 yen

Tormaresca Rocco Di Lupo (Italy, Puglia), red, 2007
Aglianico grapes
A remarkable wine from South Barolo
Sweet, silky and elegant.
30 ml/1000 yen, 60 ml/1200 yen, 90 ml/1500 yen

As an indication, 30 ml represents a good gulp, 60 ml, slightly less than a standard glass at bars and restaurants, 90 ml a normal glass!

Definitely worth a try!

Quiche Lorraine & Eikun Brewery Tokubetsu Junmai at La Sommeliere Wine & Sake Bar in Shizuoka City!

Service: Shy but very friendly
Equipment and facilities: Spotless clean. Superb washroom. Entirely non-smoking!
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Local sake by the glass. Extensive wine list by the glass. Bottles on sale. Great local bread and pastries. Home-made light food

SN3O0154

Frankly speaking I prefer conducting sake tastings in the right environment but not many places are propitious for that exercise or willing to help.
But La Sommeliere in Miyuki Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City is just perfect as not only you can conduct your tasting in the best conditions possible but also exchange views at the same time!

SN3O0158

It was actually my second tasting in this very new bar and like the first one it concerned a brew concocted by Eikun Brewery in Yu, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O0157

The fact that the rice used is Shizuoka-grown Homarefuji and that the yeast is the Shizuoka NEW-5 added to the interest!
Report coming soon!

SN3O0159

I had thought of conducting my tasting away from food but sitting in front of a menu persuaded me of the contrary!

SN3O0161

Quiche Lorraine comes into many guises, especially in Japan, and I wanted to savor Mrs. Hiromi Hasegawa/長谷川浩美さん’s own version!

SN3O0162

Hiromi’s quiche is made without any dough, thus presenting a very light and elegant savory.
It is obviously designed for small feminine appetites, but it was prefect for my tasting, being at the time so elegant, tasty and well-balanced!
I definitely have to explore the appetizers/tapas menu!
