Old Gingko Tree in Kyomizu Shrine in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5412

Autumn is arguably the best season in Japan for taking photographs of nature both in towns and in rural country as the colors are constantly and fast changing.
You do though have to look around as sometimes one single tree might be a lot more worth than the whole forest!

SN3O5413

I had a half hour to spare before cycling back for a rare home lunch so I decided to have a look at Kiyomizu Shrine, a small one with a medium sized park abut a forested cliff in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City.

SN3O5414

There wasn’t much in the park so I decided to climb some stairs up to the shrine itself.
The shrine is not that remarkable and I was about to abandon the whole idea when I discovered a tall and ancient gingko tree rising between evergreen trees!

SN3O5416

It was really, ancient with a thick bole and many gnarled if straight branches and a whole wig og golden leaves!

SN3O5417

The tree being sheltered from most of the wind by the surrounding trees and nearby shrine was taking time shedding its leaves which had started blanketing the ground around it!

SN3O5418

I realized that the tree was very old indeed when I discovered unusual outgrowths on a bottom branch looking like thick aerial roots!

SN3O5419

Actually, I saw them on a single branch only. I wonder what had started such an unusual growing pattern!

SN3O5421

I took this last picture when I climbed the stairs behind it consciously avoiding the aerial eletric wires!

When a single tree is worth a second look!

A Murder Of Crows/Food For The Crows/A Black Plague In Shizuoka City!

SN3O5436

Crows have been making themselves an increasing nuisance in this country, especially in towns!

SN3O5019

Croaking in front of my window at 5 in the morning!

They have a sorry tendency to wake you up at wee hours of the day establishing their territories, vindicative birds they are.
Their croak is often associated with the Japanese word “aho/idiot” and they are certainly impressing this opinion (nothing to do with pinions!) of theirs own on our sorry morning dreams!

SN3O5080

Tempting garbage!

One reason for that, and probably an overwhelming one is the involuntary abundance of food offered to these scavengers every morning by garbage left at the door (on pavements) of restaurants, diners and waterholes or on more definite days of the week by households.

SN3O5040

Caught red-handed/”red talonned”!

These creatures are extremely intelligent and know that plastic/vinyl can easily be shred into pieces and holes with their big beaks. Nets are no more efficient unless they are solidly secured. The only way to prevent crows from making a mess of it all is to deposit garbage bags in secured bar cages like the ones used by farming households who have to deal with kites, wild boars, stray cats, racoon dogs or monkeys (and even bears! Serious!)!

SN3O5041

Get away from me (6 a.m. in Ryougae Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City)!

The little beasts are very protective of their territory and do not hesitate to mark it even in front of humans especially in the morning when people a few around.

SN3O5042

That particularly nasty one was even screaming at a passing car!

SN3O5044

That is, before he turned onto my cycling self!

SN3O5436

I found this particular intelligent specimen completely oblivious of the rows of students passing by at 8:30 a.m.!
I have the suspicion someone had fed it scraps one day, and he is probably thinking of getting the same in that busy spot!
