Shizuoka Shochu: Hamamatsu-Tenjigura Distillery-Shusseijo Chu Kome Shochu 25 Degrees

SN3O0539
SN3O0539

This is the second kome/rice shochu of the same name produced by Hamamatsu-Tenjingura Brewery in Hamamatsu City but it has the regular alcohol contents, that is 25 degrees!

SN3O0541
SN3O0541

Rice
Alcohol: 25 degrees

Clarity: very clear
Color: transparent
Aroma: assertive, dry and fruity. Roses, strawberries, rice
Taste: deep, dry and fruity attack.
Complex: rice, roses, grapes with strong hints of strawberries and faint notes of chestnuts, custard and dark chocolate on the end.
Strong but easy to drink even straight at room temperature.
Varies little with food but for a drier but still fruity general impression.

Overall: very elegant rice shochu!
No wonder is creator is a lady brew master.
Will be eminently enjoyable at all temperatures from chilled on the rocks to blended with hot water, but I still appreciated it most straight at room temperature!
Does marry beautifully with cheese!

Shizuoka Shochu: Hamamatsu-Tenjigura Distillery-Shusseijo Chu

SN3O0798
SN3O0798

Shochu is becoming increasingly popular with ladies and young people and Hamamatsu-Tenjingura Brewery/Distillery came up with a new product with a lower alcohol content for that purpose!

SN3O0800
SN3O0800

Kome/rice shochu
Alcohol: 20 degrees

Clarity: very clear
Color: transparent
Aroma: dry. Rice
Body: fluid
Taste: dry and fruity attack.
Softer than usual thanks to low alcohol contents, but very solid and pleasant.
Complex: rice, roses, hints of strawberries.
Changes little with food but for more strawberries.
Late appearance of chestnuts once away again from food.

Overall: A shochu for ladies, yes, but gentlemen will also appreciate it.
Somewhat softer and more complex than other rice shochu probably due to the lower alcohol contents.
I tasted it straight at room temperature and I do think it’s the best way to appreciate it!
Also eminently drinkable on the rocks or with a dash of cassis!
Marries splendidly with food!

Clarity: very clear
Color: golden hue, very similar to a white wine
Aroma: assertive, dry and fruity.
Muscat, raisins, custard, musk melon, hints of peach, ripe figs and chestnuts
Body: slightly sirupy
Taste: dry and mellow attack at first backed only with a little junmai petillant with some welcome acidity.
Complex: custard, peach, figs, chestnuts.
Lingers for while warming up the back of the palate before departing on a strong dark chocolate appearance.
Very easy to drink in spite of its high alcohol contents.

Overall: a very intriguing sake you can enjoy as a high class mellow white wine!
Will splendidly marry with practically any food.
Stays complex all the way through and showing ever-changing facets probably due to the unusual rice and the high alcohol contents.
Very unusual for a Shizuoka Prefecture sake.
A must-try not only as a sake but as a high class beverage for a whole meal.
You will overwhelm your guests!

Recommended pairings: ebi shumai, oden, cheese, chawanmushi, yakitori, terrines and pate.

KURA: Traditional Japanese Warehouses in Shizuoka Prefecture 28: “Reformed” Kura in Mishima City!

SN3O0548
SN3O0548

“Kura” (in Japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditional Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

SN3O0545
SN3O0545

Whereas the bigger kura are very often maintained by rich individuals or local government these days, some smaller ones are sometimes “reformed/adapted” with various success.
I found the\is one the other day in Mishima City ensconced between newly developed touristic spots!

KURA: Traditional Japanese Warehouses in Shizuoka Prefecture 27: Akino Family House in Shimada City!

SN3O0555
SN3O0555

the other day I noticed a kura hidden inside a big property and s\decided to investigate!
The whole property was locked up and unfortunately access and views were very limited in spite of its splendid state!

SN3O0563
SN3O0563

I decided to find the entrance of the property where I found this commemorative pillar erected beside the entrance gate!
It stated that this home erected during the Meiji Era was owned by the Akino Family and had been designated as a national Cultural Asset in 1935!

SN3O0565
SN3O0565

Beside the very door hung this name plate with name of Akino Family and a rare kind of Arms representing agricultural tools! The Arms were evidently inspired by those of noble families in Europe!
I found out later that the Akin Family was probably the richest and the most powerful family in Edo Period and beyond in Shimada City which was then one of the richest cities in the Prefecture!
Unfortunately in spite of its status as a Cultural Asset it is uninhabited and closed to the public although local politicians are fighting to have it open as a local Museum!

SN3O0556
SN3O0556

What I found hidden behind all manners of vegetation was not one but a double imposing kura!
I was told there was even a third one hidden by trees inside the promises!
The family must have been enormously rich!

SN3O0557
SN3O0557

Still in incredibly good state and repair!

SN3O0558
SN3O0558

Unusually tall walls with their alignment hooks still unmoved or unbent!
I was told the kura contained an incredible wealth of documents and what else!

SN3O0559

A shame we can see only a glimpse of it all!

All windows safely barred!

SN3O0562

SN3O0564

It is good-by for the moment but I sincerely hope that one day I will be allowed to discover all that is hidden behind these trees!
