After Shimizu Harumi Oranges, they have just released “Honnori Ocha Ale”, that is an ale concocted with green tea from Shizuoka Prefecture!
The green tea is provided by Yamae Co./山英社, a company in Kakegawa City which buys green tea from local producers before massaging and processing it!

Incidentally the next Shizuoka Prefecture local product beer will feature Suruga Elegant Oranges and Peaches!

Shizuoka Prefecture is one of the largest citruses-producing Prefectures in Japan and grows many local varieties.
One is called “Harumi Mikan” and is grown in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!
Aoi Brewing could come up with this fruit beer thanks to the JA and Shizuoka Government cooperation.
It is a brew limited to 450 liters which necessitated the help of other brewers in Shizuoka Prefecture, a true local product!
Judging from the TV coverage and incredible popularity it will soon disappear, but hopefully it will become a regular annual feature!

Shizuoka Craft Beer : Kuraya-Narusawa Brewery-Hansharo 18th Anniversary Minimal Bitter

AOI BEER STAND owned by Aoi Brewery in Miyuki Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, has the merit to offer on tap other craft beers from Shizuoka Prefecture and the rest of Japan, but you do have to hurry as they usually served only one keg before switching to another brew!

SN3O0106

This time I had the occasion to sample a very limited edition to commemorate the 18th year of existence of Kuraya Narusawa Brewery in Nirayama, Northern Izu peninsula, Shizuoka prefecture called Minimal Bitter!

SN3O0105

Actually it was a triple whammy as I had no less than 3 glasses, the second one with homemade lamb gyoza/dumplings!

SN3O0110

And the third glass accompanied a delicacy difficult to get super fresh and raw outside Shizuoka prefecture: shirasu/sardine whiting and sakuraebi/cherry shrimps!

SN3O0107

Served on tap
Barley, Maris Otter malt, Crystal malt, First Gold hop, live yeast.
Unfiltered
Alcohol/ABV: 3.5 %
Bubbles: very fine bubbles. Longish head. Creamy. Light orange color
Clarity: slightly smoky (normal considering live yeast and being unfiltered), very clean
Color: deep orange
Aroma: dry and fruity. Biscuits
Taste: Refreshing and dry attack. Bread, biscuits.
Ordinary bitter style craft beer.
A little acidity popping up late.
varies little with food.

Overall: very refreshing and solid.
Great for a warm afternoon.
Although eminently enjoyable on its own, makes for a perfect marriage with food, especially meats, BBQ, etc. Great with seafood, too!

Shizuoka Beer Tasting: Aoi Brewing-Primeur French Saison, Partially Matured

Just tasted Aoi Brewing’s latest brew although this will be the first of a two-step tasting session!

SN3O0005

Primeur French Saison, Partially matured limited brew!
For the sake of comparison part of this new beer is available on tap before the fully matured version is made available end of May!

SN3O0008

Served on tap
Barley, Pilsner malt, Wheat malt, Topaz hop, Select hop, Willamette hop, Summer hop, coriander, orange peel, nutmeg, lemon grass, cinnamon, cloves
Unfiltered
Alcohol: 5.8%
Bubbles: very fine bubbles.Longish head. White.
Clarity: slightly smoky (normal considering live yeast and being unfiltered), very clean
Color: Deep lemon color
Aroma: Refreshing, dry, spicy, herbs, hints of lemon
Taste: Refreshing, very dry attack with plenty of acidity.
Still very young with a consequent high acidity.
Complex: lemon, coriander, cloves.
Lingers long enough in palate for true tasting before departing with more spicy lemon.
Varies little with food.
Stays true to first impressions all the way through.

Overall: French Saison type, of the Pilsner family, that is a beer you will start drinking with the better and warmer season.
Very refreshing and solid craft beer but definitely for lovers of beer with plenty of acidity, “hoppy-style”!
Would pair well with shellfish and seafood, but not so much with fish.
Wait for the comparison with the matured article in late May!

Niigata Beer Tasting: Swan Lake Brewery-B-IPA

AOI BEER STAND owned by Aoi Brewery in Miyuki Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, has the merit to offer on tap other craft beers from Shizuoka Prefecture and the rest of Japan, but you do have to hurry as they usually served only one keg before switching to another brew!

SN3O0048

This time I tasted another interesting craft beer by Swan lake Brewery in Niigata Prefecture: B-IPA!
“B” stands for “Belgium” as Belgium yeast was used!

SN3O0046

Served on tap
Barley, barley malt, hop, Belgian yeast.
Unfiltered
Alcohol/ABV: 7 %
Bubbles: very fine bubbles. Long head. Creamy. White
Clarity: slightly smoky (normal considering live yeast and being unfiltered), very clean
Color: dull orange color
Aroma: dry and fruity. Oranges
Taste: very refreshing, deep, dry and fruity attack.
Complex. Oranges, bread, apricot.
Welcome acidity, particularly strong on ending.
Lingers long enough for true tasting before departing on drier and more acid note, typical of a Belgian beer. Late hints of lemon and citruses.
Stays true to first impressions all the way through.
Changes little with food, but for deeper hints of dry bread.

Overall: solid and elegant craft beer.
Although produced in winter would do splendidly all year round!
For lovers of fruity, dry craft beers with plenty of acidity!
