Weird Japan (23): Weird Shizuoka Policemen Part 2- Overkill

Policemen were on the prowl (patro;) yesterday as it seems that the whole of Japan was on safety campaign.
But there is not much to worry about (in day time) in the City of Shizuoka.
All the policemen disappeared at 17:30 sharp.
At around 16:30 no less than 10 of them were checking a few lost souls in Aoba Park Street…

The poor souls are not even vagrants, but people who refuse to stay in their homes in daytime…
10 policemen for two or three inoffensive loafers… And that in plain view in front of passing crowds… Talk of an overkill!

Weird Japan (23): Weird Shizuoka Policemen Part 1-Dicey Behavior…

There were policemen everywhere in Shizuoka City today, apparently on a safety campaign!
Those two middle-aged policemen stopped those three teenage girls (probably high school students on holiday) for the spurious reason of checking the only one bicycle among them…

They spent a needlessly long time checking and checking again, explaining that they were looking for stolen bicycles…
They spent enough time with the girls who did nothing to hide their contempt to allow me an eternity to take a half dozen pics to choose from.

Japan is the safest country in the world, but that kind of behavior (in a crowded street) by two middle-aged policemen towards under age (20 in Japan) girls is just a bit too much…

Weird Japan (19): Kyoto Geisha Helping out Business in Shizuoka City?

Yesterday, as I was strolling downtown Shizuoka City in search of topics I suddenly heard a cacophony I had to investigate!

Now, what could three ladies, one less than plain and dressed as a geisha and beating a set a drums and bells, another one tall, young and beautiful “geisha” handing out leaflets and a third one (also nice-looking) dressed in festival garb and playing the saxophone?

it was tough work to take their pictures as people kept croosing the path in front of the camera!
But you can see that they were wearing placards advertizing a local (actually part of a cheap chain) unagi/eel restaurant!

And the suspicious-looking restaurant owner was not helping either!
I will have to change my strategy next time…

It is the Japanese new invention!

Called Tsunami Capsule, Tsunami Shelter, Pucapuca, Runfun, etc, it is supposed to protect you from tsunami as it is devised to float atop any moving water without capsizing!

The cost: a whooping 1,000,000 yen!

And it is made by Ton Craft company in Makinohara City, Shizuoka prefecture!

Weird Japan (11): Acid Milk!

A few years ago we used to see those big ads in Japan for “Homo Milk” standing for “Homogeneous Milk”. That is, until someone pointed out this might mislead some people into the wrong conclusions…

I found this truck in front of a kindergarten this morning on the way to my classroom.
After some investigation I found out (with the help of my Japanese student), that yoghurt is also called fermented milk in Japanese!
Acid Milk simply stands for Yoghurt!
Even so, it might be a good idea (but I suppose it is too late!) to think of a change of name, unless some people (again!) think of an even worse possibility! LOL
