Kataoka Sumiyoshi Shrine (片岡住吉神社) in Yoshida Cho!

Sometimes you have to keep your eyes open!
I was riding the bus to Shizunami in Yoshida Cho and was nearing my destination when I noticed this shrine our of the window.
I noted the bus stop and on my way back I alighted to investigate!

SN3O0096

It looked quite impressive for a “local” shrine!
Actually I had the luck to meet its resident “kanshi/priest” who provided me with many an interesting point.
In fact, they are going to hold their annual festival this Sunday, meaning a second trip there!

SN3O0097

A beautiful stone lantern!

SN3O0127

Unusual motif!

SN3O0099

I was a bit confused at the different names of the shrine.
The name written on the torii gate, “Sumiyoshi” is actually the name of the god venerated there, whereas the name of the shrine is Kataoka!

SN3O0098

I’ve been to other shrines also called Sumiyoshi, in shizuoka City in particular, and I started to understand because of similarities.
For example this guarding lion!

SN3O0101

He has his paw resting on a smaller lion!

SN3O0100

And the other guarding lion!

SN3O0102

His paw is resting on a ball!

SN3O0139

I was told that the main shrine was built 100 years or more ago, but some of the streets are found in records dating back to the 1640’s!

SN3O0103

The shrine is definitely of importance as it includes a preliminary roofed gate with guarding lodges!

SN3O0104

Getting nearer!

SN3O0105

it clearly states the name of Kataoka Shrine!

SN3O0106

The tiny right-hand side guard in its minuscule lodge!

SN3O0107

His companion on the left!

SN3O0108

The roofed hand washing stone basin!

SN3O0109

The proper way to wash your hands!

SN3O0110

A real boulder for a basin!

SN3O0111

This shrine was erected mainly for the protection of local sailors and fishermen as demonstrated by this giant oyster!

SN3O0112

The main shrine!

SN3O0113

Beautiful urn!

SN3O0114

The rice straw garland has been replaced anew!

SN3O0115

Lion and wild boar guard!

SN3O0116

And a dragon giving a hand!

SN3O0117

“Kataoka Shrine”!

SN3O0118

The money offerings box!

SN3O0119

No less than three portable shrines being readied for the coming festival!

SN3O0120

The festival drum!

SN3O0121

Crested curtain!

SN3O0122

This fishing boat was donated to the Shrine by the Fishing Companies Owners Association!

SN3O0123

Bearing the name of “Sumiyoshi”!

SN3O0124

A last look at the roofing!

SN3O0125

Making my way back home!
Actually the kanushi even offered me a drive!

SN3O0126

See you again on Sunday!

Pavement Tile Tourism in Sagara, Makinohara City!

Many cities in Japan use their pavement to promote their own tourism.
They usually do them on single tiles on various sizes, but in Sagara, a spot famous for its beaches and seafood, the local authorities have commandeered quadruple tile design you v\can find near the Sagara Eigyoujyou Bus Terminal!

SN3O0088

The symbol tree of Sagara town is the pine, but it is the first time I see it represented with such big roots!

SN3O0090

The mascot of the Town is “Cha Cha Maru Kun”!
“Cha cha” stands for “tea”, “Maru” is usually a name given to ships and “Kun” means is a young friend!

SN3O0091

Sagara Town is famous for its Beach Kite Festival!
This particular character popular with kite designers is called “Okame”!

SN3O0093

And this is its male counterpart called “Koi Kin”!

SN3O0094

The symbol flower of Sagara town is the narcissus!

SN3O0089

In Japan the Turtle and the Crane are the combined symbol of prosperity and good luck!

Dragons in Shizuoka Prefecture 2

Dragons!

If you know where to look around you will find plenty looking after us in Shinto Shrines or looking at us in Parks or during festivals and where else!
They even lurk in Buddhist temples!

Shall we look for them (pun intended!)?

SN3O0114

I found an old one almost invisible in Kataoka Sumiyoshi Shiren in Sumiyoshi, Yoshida Cho!

SN3O0116

I know one thing for sure: he is 100 years old or a litlle more!

SN3O0525

I discovered these two hiding inside Oi Shrine in Shimada City!

SN3O0528

The water is not magical and good enough to drink!

OI-JINJA-3

Short horns!

SN3O0526

Twinkling eye!

SN3O0527

Maybe a little shy!

SN3O0007

This one seems to go unnoticed in Okutsuhiko Shrine in Kuruma Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O0008

Pert smile!

SN3O0678

I was a bit nonplussed to find this one in a Buddhist temple called Rei Ei Ji in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O0053

I made this discovery yesterday when I looked around in Shizunami, Mkainohara City in a Buddhist temple with an interminable name!

SN3O0055

the name of the temple is Shinshuu Ootaniha Daishinkaizan Myoushouji !

SN3O0054

It might be tempted to disappear before yu can say the name aloud!

SN3O5747

Checking my archives I unearthed this wooden one ridden by a kappa/water goblin!

SN3O5734

Practically the same on a scroll!
Both can be found in Hachan Kappa Museum in Yaizu City!

SN3O0541

We will take our leave riding this minuscule one hidden in Ogushi Shrine in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

Shizuoka Beer Tasting: Baird Beer Suruga Bay Imperial IPA

IPA is a classic name for a craft beer and Bryan Baird gave his creation a great name, “Suruga Bay, the very bay that bathes the center of Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0086

Did you know that Baird Beer labels have become classics available on the market?

SN3O0088

Product name: Baird Beer Suruga Bay Imperial IPA
Grain malt, grain, hops, sugars, live yeast

Alcohol: 7.5 degrees
Contents: 360 ml

Bubbles: very fine bubbles. longish head, white

Taste: very deep dry refreshing attack with great acidity.
Lingers on the palate with more acidity and citruses.

Shizuoka sake Tasting: Eikun Brewery-Junmai Ginjo “Daidai no Eikun”

It’s been some time since I tasted a bottle by Eikun Brewery in Yui, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!
But this once I had the opportunity to conduct my tasting away from Home!

SN3O0532

A new wine and sake bar opened in Shizuoka City, namely La Sommeliere, and since they serve the sake in wine glasses, the tasting is easy to conduct!

SN3O0533

An orange (“daidai”) label is a bit unusual in our region, but this the official color of Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0535

Rice: Bizen Omachi (Okayama Prefecture)
Rice milled down to 55%
Dryness: + 5
Acidity: 1.4
Bottled in July 2014

Clarity: Very clear
Color: Very faint golden hue
Aroma: Assertive and fruity. Dry. Pears
Body: Fluid
Tasting: Dry and fruity attack backed with pleasant jumai petillant.
Complex and elegant.
Pears, green apples, hints of apricots.
Lingers for a while with more hints of dry almonds, dark chocolate and milk coffee.

Overall: I drank this particular sake without food. It is just too elegant to let it be influenced by food.
A superb sake for tasting parties, although frankly speaking I will keep my own company when savoring it!
Would make for a splendid aperitif.
Start it chilled and let the sake warm up inside your glass to discover new facets!

Entirely Non-Smoking Restaurants (& Bars) in Shizuoka Prefecture (Amended regularly)

TETSUA-SUGIMOTO

Beautiful Vegetables at Tetsuya Sugimoto (unfortunately closed!) in Shizuoka City!

I agree that this particular article has been long overdue.
Not only my expats friends, but many Japanese friends have been at pains at finding restaurants, bars and cafes where they wouldn’t have to put up with the hazards and stink of smoke inhaled and expelled by uncaring customers.
Some time ago I mentioned partially non-smoking restaurants but I see little point to mention them unless the entirely non-smoking times are clearly announced and respected!

This is of course not an exhaustive list, but it will be regularly updated as I visit establishments for work!
There is no special order to this list, they come as they come!

One more important point: Non-smoking is not the only criterion, good food is, too!
If you are kind enough to recommend me restaurants not introduced here it will be my pleasure to survey them!

Shizuoka Sake Tasting: Suruga Brewery- Tenko Junmai Nama Genshu Muroka

It’s been some time since I tasted a sake brewed by Suruga Brewery in Shizuoka City!
Although still a very new brewery, at least in name, it is already getting recognition nationally!

SN3O0418

It goes for one of its long name as it describes the brewing process:
Junmai: no pure rice alcohol added/blended.
Genshu: no pure water added
Nama: unpasteurized
Muroka: unfiltered

SN3O0421

Rice milled down to 60%
Dryness: + 5
Acidity: 1.6
Alcohol: 17~18 degrees
Shizuoka yeast
Bottled in June 2014

Clarity: Very clear
Color: Faint golden hue
Aroma: Dry and fruity. Pears
Body: Fluid
Taste: Dry and fruity attack backed up with puissant junmai petillant and pleasant alcohol.
Complex. Apricots, dark chocolate and milk coffee appearing late with a sweeter note.
Disappears quickly.
Changes little with but for a slightly drier note.

Overall: A sake for strong sake lovers!
Perfect with izakaya food or BBQ.
Easy to drink in spite of its high alcohol contents.
Gains to be drunk slowly and carefully as it can suddenly reveal fleeting facets!

Shizuoka Sake Brewers List (Regularly amended)

Here below is the list of all 29 “kura”/breweries in Shizuoka Prefecture, which were “working” as of May 2014 (with some nuances and notes attached!)
They are listed in a “traditional” order.
Official business names of Breweries are also included. Keep in mind that some breweries also produce brands for individual shops or distributors: “Miwa No sato” and “Ashikubo” by Fujinishiki, “Toro No sato” by Haginishiki, etc. as well as seasonal limited sake with different names.

SHIZUOKA CITY:

1) Suruga Brewery (Suruga Ku Ku): Tenko (also includes: Abekaido, Umifune No Yamahai, Chuemon, Hagi no Kura)

2) Sanwa Brewery (Shimizu Ku): Garyubai (also includes Hagoromo No Mai, Shizugokoro, S-Pulse Brand, Sayo No Mai, Okitsu, Tesshu, Hoosu)

5) Masuichi (Suruga Ku): masuichi (includes: Tsurugi)

Following the early death of the owner/brewer thw brewery has gone dormant although it keeps its license. Still has some sake for sale in its tanks!

6) Shizuoka Hiraki Brewery: Kihei. Technically, not entirely a Shizuoka Brewery as the original “half” Hiraki Brewery is a brewery in Okayama prefecture owned by Hiraki Company (owned by the totsuka Family in Kakagawa City), a distributor for Tokyo, Nada and ther regions’ major sake, lqueurs, etc.

7) Eikun Brewery (Shimizu Ku): Eikun (also includes: Sumpu No Takajo, Iroha, Kohaku, Hiyaoroshi, Midori no Eikun)

8) Kanzawagawa Brewery: Shosetsu (also includes: Yamada Nishiki, Gin Ginga,Aki Agari)

2) Fuuki in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City are not a sake brewery but an alcohol brewing and bottling company from the Nada area, although one of their casks is displayed at Sengen Shrine in Shizuoka City. They represented (and might even still) the biggest oke-gai in the Prefecture.

Entirely Non-Smoking Restaurants (& Bars) in Shizuoka Prefecture (Amended regularly)

TETSUA-SUGIMOTO

Beautiful Vegetables at Tetsuya Sugimoto in Shizuoka City!

Kura: Japanese Traditional Warehouses in Shizuoka Prefecture 12: Kita Shin Ishikura Gallery, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City

“Kura” (in Japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditional Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

the other day as I was looking around Jirosho area in Shimizuoka, Shizuoka City for more old kuras, I almost missed this one peeking above a wooden gate!

SN3O0054

i decided to put on my impertinent coat on and investigate at the risk of breaking somebody’s privacy!

SN3O0055

It certainly looked very intriguing as it definitely seemed to be used in spite of his ancient look!

SN3O0056

I checked the old door, but it was locked up!

SN3O0057

I checked behind and found the dustbins sitting beside another door. Intriguing….

SN3O0060

i was about to give up when I noticed another grand door with a sign saying Kita Shin Ishikura Gallery!
Well. well…
I was still about to leave when a grand lady just came out of the smae door.
I politely inquired what the kura was all about!

SN3O0058

She kindly explained that at one time she was about to have the edifice pulled but friends convinced her to preserve it and even transform it into a kind a gallery space for rent!
The place inside is exquisite indeed with some very remarkable decoration made up with existing wood material inside!

SN3O0059

Edo time rafters!

Unluckily the inside was a bit too dark for good photographing.
The lady also mentioned that private parties and concerts were also held there.
A place I will definitely have to visit again at length!
