Chikatsu Sengen Shrine (千勝浅間神社) in Shizuoka City!

Suruga Ku, south of Shizuoka JR Station, is an area replete with small ancient shrines due to its proximity to the sea.
I discovered another one of them while cycling around Minami Cho and Imagawa Cho: Chikatsu Segen Shrine/千勝浅間神社!

SN3O0804
SN3O0804

Although a bit derelict some parts have been renewed and are looked after a kannushi/神主/Shinto priest living in his own private house on the very premises of the shrine!

SN3O0805
SN3O0805

The view past the torii entrance gate!

SN3O0806
SN3O0806

There are still some old trees towering over it!

SN3O0807
SN3O0807

The main shrine!

SN3O0818
SN3O0818

It was rebuilt in 1875 but dates far more back into the past!

SN3O0808
SN3O0808

Two smaller brand new shrines have been added!

SN3O0823
SN3O0823

Kotogara Jinja/金刀比羅神社! It might be related to the one existing in Fujieda City!

SN3O0824
SN3O0824

But its door panels are really ancient!

SN3O0825
SN3O0825

Akiba Jinja/秋葉神社!

SN3O0826
SN3O0826

The money offering box is new but its lock is old!
I suspect that these two “new” shrines had been here all the time and have been repainted only recently!

On the right side can be found a far smaller and more ancient shrine with a few red torii gates!

Although the red paint is flaking out the torii are still recent. They were gifted by local worshipers!

Shimizu Fish Market (清水魚市場) in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

Shimizu Ku, formerly Shimizu City, a city of its own, before it was merged into Shizuoka City, has always been a major fishing harbor in Japan.
It is actually the biggest tuna hauling port in Japan (not Tsukiji where everything is more or less sent to!)!
Since Shimizu Ku’s merger it has been expanded and modernized together with Shimizu JR Station but the quaint old-fashioned market open to the public is still there!

SN3O0792
SN3O0792

To find it get off via the North Exit of Shimizu JR Station and walk for about 10 minutes.
It is pretty well indicated and difficult to miss.
Bear in mind there are two entrances.
Follow me for an easy visit and let’s see what is in store for us!
And remember it can make make for a great monthly tour as the fresh seafood is seasonal and there are many small and very reasonable restaurants inside!

Shizuoka Craft Beer: Aoi Brewing-O Cha Ale

Aoi Brewing in Shizuoka City has finally come up with what they consider their full O Cha Ale/Green Tea Ale after the two batches of Honnnori O-Cha Ale/A Little Green Tea Ale.

SN3O0561
SN3O0561

The ingredients are the same, but this is the real article now!

SN3O0562
SN3O0562

Served on tap
Barley, Maris Otter malt, Pilsner Malt, Topaz hop, Willamette hop, green tea
Unfiltered
Alcohol/ABV: 5.5%
Bubbles: very fine bubbles. Long head. creamy, white
Clarity: slightly smoky (normal considering live yeast and being unfiltered), very clean
Color: light orange color
Aroma: assertive, dry. puissant green tea aroma.
Taste: Assertive and dry attack with plenty of green tea!
Lingers long enough for true tasting before departing on more dry green tea.
Tends to mellow down and show more fruitiness along although it will always depart on a strong green tea note.
Varies little with food but for a softer approach, but still with strong green tea.

Overall: A true Shizuoka green tea craft beer!
A real coming of age after the two precedent green tea ales experiments!
For lovers of very dry beers!
A beer with a big character to be enjoyed all year round although will dperform best on a hot afternoon!
Suggested pairings: BBQ food, stews, sausages.

French Cake: “Grand Marnier” by Ludovic Le Teigner at Patisserie Le Teigner in Shizuoka City!

It has indeed taken little time for Ludovic le Teigner, a native of Bretagne, France, since he opened Patiseerie Le Teigner in Shizuoka City in April last year to establish himself as the best Chef Patissier in our town of almost 800,000 souls!

SN3O0566
SN3O0566

This is the of probably a very long series of tastings of his extravagant creations all in finesse and exquisite details!
This particular cake was actually recommended to me by Ludovic when I visited him at a special event in Isetan Department Store in Shizuoka City: “Grand Marnier”!
Grand Marnier is the famed French orange liqueur used in the making of this cake conceived around chocolate and oranges.

SN3O0564
SN3O0564

It is mainly composed of two layers, the bottom one a chocolate biscuit covered with bits of candied orange and the top layer a chocolate mousse, both beautifully accentuated with Grand Marnier orange liqueur.

SN3O0565
SN3O0565

The whole is covered with a fine chocolate ganache and decorated with a stick of candied orange and thin square of chocolate.
Cut through its soft texture with a fork and discover the marriage of at least four savors!
Delicious, both sober in approach and extravagant in taste and ingredients!
To appreciate with a cup of superior quality tea or coffee!

Bubbles: very fine bubbles. Long head. creamy, white
Clarity: slightly smoky (normal considering live yeast and being unfiltered), very clean
Color: deep lemon/light orange color
Aroma: dry and spicy but soft. Bread, faint citruses
Taste: very spicy and dry attack with satisfying acidity.
Citruses, orange peels, spices.
Lingers long enough on palate for true tasting before disappearing with more dry spices.
Actually lingers on the palate longer than usual.
Drinks very slowly.

Overall: A beer which ought to be enjoyed on its own, although it will please gentlemen more than ladies.
If you must absolutely drink it with food, cheese and spicy meats would be best.
Strong and intriguing although standard as far as alcohol content is concerned.
A beer for tasting, especially on a hot afternoon!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 38: Nishigaya Sports Center in Shizuoka City!

SN3O0600

Nishigaya Sports Center is located far away, about 30 minutes by bicycle from Shizuoka Station on the other side of the Abe River. That is probably why I never realised they might have, and an ancient one at that, their own particular manhole covers!

SN3O0603
SN3O0603

They are all, 21 of them, located in the middle of a street running along the sports center (none were found near the baseball stadium, though). There are two types, most often in pairs, although of the exactly same design.
They were probably installed in 1990 when the Sports Center was completed, making them very old by Shizuoka standards!

I have a strong hunch they will soon be replaced so keep an eye on them!
