Shizuoka Beer Tasting: Kuraya-Naruzawa Brewery-Hansharo Oyoja Season

AOI BEER STAND owned by Aoi Brewery in Miyuki Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, has the merit to offer on tap other craft beers from Shizuoka Prefecture, but you do have to hurry as they usually served only one keg before switching to another brew!

This time i had come in time to taste plenty Actually I managed this other limited craft beer by Kuraya-Naruzawa Brewery in Nirayama, Izu City, Izu Peninsula!

“Oyoja Season” in northern Izu Peninsula dialect means “Season for a rest!

Served on tap
Barley, barley malt, hop, live yeast
Unfiltered
Alcohol: 5 %
Clarity: only slightly smoky (normal considering live yeast and being unfiltered), very clean
Color: orange
Bubbles: fine bubbles. shortish head, white
Aroma: refreshing and light. Citruses
Taste: Dry and fruity approach backed with pleasant acidity.
Bread, dry citruses, dry oranges.
Lingers long enough for acidity to disappear and be replaced by sweetish mandarine oranges.
Changes little with food.

Overall: very pleasant and refreshing craft beer.
More complex than expected. Great balance.
Great for summer and autumn or when temperatures are constantly changing (in Japan!)!

Shizuoka Beer Tasting: Kuraya-Narusawa Brewery-Hansharo Beer Nouhei Steam

Yesterday I had the occasion to taste a new beer by Kuraya-Narusawa, Izu no Kuni City, Izu peninsula, at AOI BEER STAND in Miyuki Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, as they often serve on tap beers by other Shizuoka Prefecture as a part of a constructive collaboration policy!

The general name of beers produced by Kuraya-Narusawa Brewery are called Hansharo after the name of the ancient gun foundry of the same name standing inside their precincts.
They are a noteworthy brewery as they do experiment a lot, as far as to reproduce old style beer.
This particular beer is a steam beer reminiscent of what some German immigrants brewed in the States when they didn’t have the money to buy expensive equipment. The beer then was brewed at environmental temperature, a long process using lager yeast to produce an ale type beer.
Anchor Steam in San Francisco is a brewery still using this method for some of their beers.

Bubbles: shortish head, fine bubbles, light orange hue
Aroma: Fruity, dry oranges, citruses
Taste: Dry and deep attack.
Bread.
Great acidity, very refreshing.
Varies little with food.

Overall: Very refreshing beer. Does not need to be overchilled.
Thanks to its acidity one can drink it for a long time without getting tired of it.

Visiting Shizuoka Prefecture by Bus 2: Shimada City~Ikumi Line

When you do not want to drive a car, nor ride a bicycle and when there is no railroad available the best means to travel through Shizuoka Prefecture is the bus. And it can prove cheaper as well!

This time, still starting from Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Station North Exit Bus Platform, I went north along the Ikumi Line/Ikumi Sen/伊久身線 up in the mountains till the last station called Ikumi (different Japanese characters: 伊久美).
Note there is only one bus every hour!

Although smaller than tourist buses, such vehicles have very large windows for perfect views!

The trip altogether last an hour and runs along the Ooi River for about 20 minutes!
This particular line is heavily subsidized by the municipality to help tea farmers up in the mountains and the whole trip costs only 200 yen!

From my Recipe Book: Chicken Meatballs Spaghettini with Marutaka Farm Puree

Cooking, especially at home, shouldn’t be difficult.
The point is to find and use good ingredients!

Marutaka Farm/まるたか農園 in Miyakoda, Hamamatsu City makes a truly extravagant tomato puree made with tomatoes originally grown solely to be eaten fresh. Not wishing to throw away good produce during the peak harvest season they started making this sauce with the pulp of the tomatoes with the sole addition of salt!

You can adapt it to any Italian recipes but must keep in mind it is not as concentrated as European tomato purees but more like sauces.
Each jar contains 270 g, enough to devise a recipe for two.

Chicken Meatballs Spaghettini with Marutaka Farm Puree

Meat balls:
Minced chicken
Grated garlic
Grated Ginger
Japanese sake or white wine (just enough for taste)
Salt
Pepper
Mayonnaise (to liaise instead of eggs)

Above proportions are up to your taste, so experiment!
Mix the whole and make small balls.

Fry some thinly sliced onions in olive oil first in a large and fairly deep fry-pan over medium high fire until they have become transparent.
Add meat balls and fry until they have change color to a light brown. Lower fire to medium low.

Start preparing the spaghettini.

Add a whole jar of Marutaka Tomato Puree and cook for a while. Add 1 large tablespoon of Port wine, 1 large tablespoon of basil sauce, pepper and a little curry mix powder. Add chili pepper powder if you like your pasta hot.

Add plenty of grape tomatoes and cook on a medium fire for a while or until spaghettini are ready.
Drain the pasta and transfer it into the sauce pan. Mix well. Add edamame and sliced black olives and mix again.

Serve hot!

Ooi Shrine (大井神社) in Shimada City (2): Ooi Ebisu Shrine (大井恵比寿神社)

Ooi Shrine (大井神社) in Shimada City within walking distance from Shimada JR station north exit is actually a group of shrines more or less dedicated to the Ooi River, a major river in Japan that travelers had to cross with the help of porters until the end of the Edo Era.
The one shrine I singled out this time is called Ooi Ebisu (大井恵比寿) as it is dedicated both to to the Oi Reiver and Ebisu God!

Lingers on pleasantly with welcome acidity.

Visiting Shizuoka Prefecture by Bus: Shimada City~Yoshida Cho~Makinohara City

When you do not want to drive a car, nor ride a bicycle and when there is no railroad available the best means to travel through Shizuoka Prefecture is the bus. And it can prove cheaper as well!

I have very few occasions to visit the Yoshida Cho and Makinohara City areas by the waters of Suruga Bay in Central Shizuoka Prefecture as they are simply too far from the railroad linking the cities of Atamai and Hamamatsu through Mishimsa, Fuji, Shizuoka, Shimada and Kakegawa, but I found an easy enough way to reach them!

First of all ride the train till Shimada JR Station along the Tokaido Line and get out from the North exit!

Do pay a visit to the tourism information bureau on the left where they will give you all the information you need and more!

There is only one bus to Shizunami/静波, a beach resort in Makinohara City/真琴腹市!
Mind you, considering the distance and the destination, it is more than enough!

Kura: Traditional Japanese Warehouse in Shizuoka Prefecture 21: Oomura Soy Sauce Company Kura in Yoshida Cho!

“Kura” (in Japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditional Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

The other as I was preparing to back to Shimada City from Sumiyoshi in Yoshida Cho, I noticed this beautiful wooden kura on the right of the Kataoka Sumiyoshi Shinto Shrine!

I have interviewed soy sauce companies before but I couldn’t smell the typical flavors of soy sauce making in the air!

That is when I met an employee who gracefully explained that the Company uses these premises as their business base, office and storeroom!

Before it was merged with Shimizu Brewery into the present Sanwa Brewery in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, Suzuki Honkei was active producing Japanese sake in Jirochou, Shimizu City before another kind of merger put the three of them into Shizuoka City!

Kataoka Sumiyoshi Shrine (片岡住吉神社) in Yoshida Cho!

Sometimes you have to keep your eyes open!
I was riding the bus to Shizunami in Yoshida Cho and was nearing my destination when I noticed this shrine our of the window.
I noted the bus stop and on my way back I alighted to investigate!

It looked quite impressive for a “local” shrine!
Actually I had the luck to meet its resident “kanshi/priest” who provided me with many an interesting point.
In fact, they are going to hold their annual festival this Sunday, meaning a second trip there!

I was a bit confused at the different names of the shrine.
The name written on the torii gate, “Sumiyoshi” is actually the name of the god venerated there, whereas the name of the shrine is Kataoka!

I’ve been to other shrines also called Sumiyoshi, in shizuoka City in particular, and I started to understand because of similarities.

Pavement Tile Tourism in Sagara, Makinohara City!

Many cities in Japan use their pavement to promote their own tourism.
They usually do them on single tiles on various sizes, but in Sagara, a spot famous for its beaches and seafood, the local authorities have commandeered quadruple tile design you v\can find near the Sagara Eigyoujyou Bus Terminal!

The symbol tree of Sagara town is the pine, but it is the first time I see it represented with such big roots!

The mascot of the Town is “Cha Cha Maru Kun”!
“Cha cha” stands for “tea”, “Maru” is usually a name given to ships and “Kun” means is a young friend!

Sagara Town is famous for its Beach Kite Festival!
This particular character popular with kite designers is called “Okame”!

If you know where to look around you will find plenty looking after us in Shinto Shrines or looking at us in Parks or during festivals and where else!
They even lurk in Buddhist temples!

Shizuoka Beer Tasting: Baird Beer Suruga Bay Imperial IPA

IPA is a classic name for a craft beer and Bryan Baird gave his creation a great name, “Suruga Bay, the very bay that bathes the center of Shizuoka Prefecture!

Grain malt, grain, hops, sugars, live yeast
Unfiltered
Alcohol: 7.5 degrees
Contents: 360 ml

Clarity: slightly smoky (normal considering live yeast and being unfiltered), very clean
Color: persimmon color
Bubbles: very fine bubbles. longish head, white
Aroma: assertive and fruity. Dry. Oranges and citruses
Taste: very deep dry refreshing attack with great acidity.
Lingers on the palate with more acidity and citruses.
Very easy to drink in spite of its high alcohol contents.
Fruity. Oranges, bread.
Varies little with food.

Overall: Refreshing, solid and reliable craft beer for dry beer lovers.
Its welcome acidity makes it the perfect beer for a hot summer drink!

Shizuoka sake Tasting: Eikun Brewery-Junmai Ginjo “Daidai no Eikun”

It’s been some time since I tasted a bottle by Eikun Brewery in Yui, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!
But this once I had the opportunity to conduct my tasting away from Home!

A new wine and sake bar opened in Shizuoka City, namely La Sommeliere, and since they serve the sake in wine glasses, the tasting is easy to conduct!

An orange (“daidai”) label is a bit unusual in our region, but this the official color of Shizuoka Prefecture!

Rice: Bizen Omachi (Okayama Prefecture)
Rice milled down to 55%
Dryness: + 5
Acidity: 1.4
Bottled in July 2014

Clarity: Very clear
Color: Very faint golden hue
Aroma: Assertive and fruity. Dry. Pears
Body: Fluid
Tasting: Dry and fruity attack backed with pleasant jumai petillant.
Complex and elegant.
Pears, green apples, hints of apricots.
Lingers for a while with more hints of dry almonds, dark chocolate and milk coffee.

Overall: I drank this particular sake without food. It is just too elegant to let it be influenced by food.
A superb sake for tasting parties, although frankly speaking I will keep my own company when savoring it!
Would make for a splendid aperitif.
Start it chilled and let the sake warm up inside your glass to discover new facets!
