Kusanagi Shinto Shrine (草薙神社) in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

Kusanagi shrine (草薙神社) in Kusanagi, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, has been a major sanctuary in the city of Shizuoka, more precisely the former city of Shimizu before the two were merged at the end of the 20th Century.
It involves a good walk, so choose a shiny day, preferably in winter although you must not miss the rocket festival held in September.
Take either the normal train (Tokaido Line) or the local Shizutetsu Line and get down at Kuasanagi Stations.
Proceed straight to the main crossing and turn left.

Sushi: Why You Should Eat It Away From Tokyo!

This is an article bound to tickle some into self-righteous reactions but it will help visitors to Japan to discover the genuine article if they have the will to delve into the true gastronomic culture of this incredible country instead of limiting themselves to clichés and preconceptions acquired back home!

SN3O3130

Home-made Taraba crab Chirashizushi.

Tokyo is Tokyo, and like Paris, London and where else, it might be a place where you can eat (up to a point) and enjoy great Japanese food but it produces next to nothing and is always unashamedly borrowing from the gastronomy of other regions.
It is particularly obvious when it comes to sushi.

Sushi was not invented in Tokyo, or Edo for that matter, as many tend to believe when they eat Edomae Sushi, which is only one form among a plethora of styles. To begin with, Edomae sushi/Tokyo sushi is made with little truly fresh fish. Actually Edomae sushi was a style created by stalls in the streets to be served at all times of the day and night with preserved fish or seafood. Even now the internationally praised sushi restaurants in Tokyo use few fresh ingredients. Almost all is arranged, albeit artistically, for best conservation while served with haughty pride and consequently impossible prices.

SUHI-12-12

Large rainbow roll at Sushi Ko in Shizuoka City.

But what about Tsukiji Market and its “great” sushi bars?
Unfortunately Tsukiji is only a market conceived for a sprawling metropolis, and while many a gastronome, reporters and critics included, falls into the touristic trap conscientiously organized with local and international media, it is devised first and all to feed untold numbers.
The “great” sushi bars serving “great” sushi at “great” prices are only cleverly making a mercantile use of leftovers.
There is also a misconception of tuna being all brought to Tsukiji Market before anywhere else. It is not. The greatest part of the Japanese tuna, and bonito, catch is first unloaded in the harbor of Shimizu in Shizuoka City. Actually Tokyo has first to wait that fish and seafood has reached a port somewhere else in Japan before even announcing availability on their stalls. Tujkiji Market is after all only a dealer/auction market!
Unfortunately for some the Tsukiji Market will be soon moved to a vastly different address and will consequently lose its interest!

095

Flying fish sashimi in Yakushima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu Island.

Why don’t you take your suitcase, camera and chopsticks and board a train, bus or ship (a plane will do, too) and start exploring the shores of this beautiful archipelago?
Obviously each region or island has its own unique products, notwithstanding the fact that all sea products have their own regional names. For example, “tachi” in many areas stand for Scabbard/cutlass fish, but in Hokkaido it means cod milt/male cod sperm sacs, a delicacy popular all over the country!
Frankly speaking, the choice of venues is an impossible embarrassment!

SN3B0158

Vegan sushi in Shizuoka City! You will not find it in Tokyo, unless you are either ready to fork out stupid prices or make it yourself!

Even in my own Prefecture of Shizuoka I would have to recommend you at least half a dozen establishments, all authentic, reasonable and serving sublime food. For example you would have to visit Yui (Shizuoka City, Shimizu Ku) for fresh sakura ebi/cherry shrimps, Kambara (Shizuoka City, Shimizu Ku) for aji/horse mackerel, Omaezaki City for fresh shirasu/sarine whiting, Numazu City for fresh katsuo/bonito, Sagara Cho (Makinohara City) for long and silvery tachiuo/scabbard fish (also called cutlass fish) and strange yagara/trumpet fish, Yaizu City and its fishing port Ogawa again for tuna and bonito, Shimoda City at the tip of Izu peninsula for kinmedai and all kinds of seabream, and Hamana Lake, Hamamatsu City, for conger eel, eel, and oysters. And I have only started!

SN3O0270

Another sushi millefeuille at Sushi Ko in Shizuoka City!

Any region with a shore in Japan has the ingredients and the skills to offer beautiful, tasty and reasonable creations without having to resort to dubious artifices.

220

The real “oyakodon/parent and child sushi bowl” with fresh sea salmon and its roe in Wakkanai, Hokkaido Island!

WASABI-UTOUGI-2

And do not expect to find fresh wasabi, root, stem, leaves, flowers and all as it is not grown in Tokyo!
You will find it there but for what prices and how fresh?
Most sushi restaurants izakaya/Japanese bistros will serve wasabi paste of various purity and quality in big cities, even in Kyoto.
But we are lucky here in Shizuoka as we witnessed its birth in Utogi, Shizuoka City in the 17th Century!
Not only the Bay of Suruga, the richest in Japan, will offer you a mind-boggling array of seafood but also the land and mountains of Shizuoka Prefecture produces the best wasabi in the world to accompany it!

Please note this is only a short essay to entice you into some delightful thinking and research!

Japanese Fish Species 10: Kurosoi/Black Rock Fish

Kurosoi/クロソイ/Black Rock Fish-Schlegel’s Black Rockfish (Latin name: Sebastes schlegelii Hilgendorf,1880) is a rock fish/scorpion Fish variety even rarer than Ainame/アイナメ/Fat Greening for the simple reason that it is one of those fish great not only for its taste but for its angling challenge!

Also known as Kurosui and Kurokara (and many local names), it is caught south of the Hokkaido Island along rocky coasts as well as off the Korean Peninsula and China.
Great efforts are presently spent on the possibility of raising them either by semi-natural methods or completely raised from egg to adult state in human-controlled environment.
Its flesh can be appreciated in any form of gastronomy, raw or cooked.

Sashimi plate.

Rare as sushi! (two on the left!)

Slow-cooked as Japanese-style aquapazza!

Its head, tail, fins and bones can be turned into a succulent Japanese-style miso bouillabaisse with other seafood!

Abandoned Shizuoka: Ivy Chimney in Shizuoka City!

I was cycling around Yamato machi in Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City when I espied a green column poking out of a cluster of houses and decided to investigate!

SN3O0702

That is when I realized it was an old chimney completely overgrown with ivy!

SN3O0703

Getting near enough was nigh impossible as it was completely surrounded with no open access to it!

SN3O0704

It is positively enormous by Japanese standards and would cost a fortune to pull down.
The company in front seemed to have ceased business.
They must have used an incinerator at their back.

SN3O0706

There was some kind of access for a better view with a flight of stairs but it was safely locked!

SN3O0707

I tried to walk though the high grass covering the small lane to another side access to what seemed a house or shed.

SN3O0708

Unfortunately the gate was safely locked and the whole place overgrown with the trees of an abandoned garden, especially loquat trees!

I was in Gofuku Street, walking aimelssly, at around 7:00 pm, just before dog and wolf as we say in French, but it was particularly dark.

SN3O0612

The contrast was naturally accentuated by the lamps focused by the camera.

SN3O0613

If you know the whims of your camera, or mobile phone for that matter, I’m sure you can come up with some very interesting shots indeed!
And you don’t need to be a pro!

Dragons!

If you know where to look around you will find plenty looking after us in Shinto Shrines or looking at us in Parks or during festivals and where else!

Shall we look for them (pun intended!)?

SN3O3219

I discovered this dark dragon in an underground shrine inside a cliff by the sea in Kamakura!

SN3O0047

Dragons are not so many in Kyoto and tend to be artistically represented!

SN3O0159

Some old buildings in Kyoto have them protecting their entrance!

SN3O0160

It is still unusual to find them on western-looking edifices, hough!

SN3O0288

SN3O0265

SN3O0267

Or did the artist confuse it with a guarding dog? LOL

DRAGON-YOKOHAMA-1

Yokohama City having a big Chinese community you are bound to find many Chinese dragons there!

DRAGON-YOKOHAMA-2

they are markedly different from the Japanese ones with more bright colors!

DRAGON-YOKOHAMA-3

Different maws, too!

DRAGON-YOKOHAMA-4

They also look more aggressive in protecting their charges!

Japanese Appetizer (O-toushi/お通し): Chicken wings with Ume & Umeshu!

O-toushi/お通しis actually a bit difficult to translate.
In a Japanese (in Japan) izakaya it is an appetizer that is served with the first drink and that you pay for in general in lieu of a cover charge.
I have nothing against such a notion as it gives you a good idea of the chef’s skills!

SN3O0310

I still have some of the umeshu/梅酒/liqueur made with Japanese plums, sake, shochu and sugar I made last year.
Dragon loves to prepare chicken wings!
She will fry them first on a hot fire in some oil until the skin has turned dark brwon. She will then lower the fire, lightly season the chicken wings and pour some liquid of her choice and k\let simmer under a lid for long enough for the meat to detach itself easily from the bones!

SN3O0308

This time she followed the same recipe in a STAUB casserole (French, similar to Le Creuset).
As for the liquid she used plenty of umeshu!
To bring further innovation she added umeshu soaked plums as well!
The last were particularly unique what with the fact they were cooked with the chicken!
Some flat parsley for the finishing touch! Finger-licking good!

Kura: Japanese Traditional Warehouses in Shizuoka Prefecture 15: Ieyama, Shimada City!

“Kura” (in Japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditional Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

SN3O0057

i discovered this small but well-preserved kura in Ieyama, a famous small hot spring resort along the Oigawa Railway Line in Shmada City.
It belongs to the Suzuki Family who had a sake brewery called Suzuki Brewery there until 1940 until they had to close it due to WWII. They never resumed the brewing of sake but they kept the kura all the time.

SN3O0058

It still has a “namako” design on its lower hall.
It is basically empty now, but the owners keep it into good repair!

SN3O0059

The wall facing the road had to be protected with corrugated iron though.
But the windows are nicely up-kept!

SN3O0060

I wonder if you could open a cafe inside!

Turtles Basking in the Sun in Yui, Shizuoka City!

SN3O0069

If you have the chance to stop at Yui, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, try and go to visit the Hiroshige Wood Block Prints Art Museum!
You are about to discover an unexpected sight or two there!

SN3O0070

Of course the whole complex is a source for great photography but you should have a second look at the narrow and shallow “moat” along the wall!

SN3O0058

What is this gentleman looking at?

SN3O0068

From the other end…

SN3O0059

Turtles and many of them!

SN3O0060

I’ve counted 16 of them and they seem very sociable!

SN3O0061

Only a couple of them were swimming under water!

SN3O0062

Did you that the turtle in Japan is a sign of good luck and prosperity?

SN3O0063

They are looked after by the staff of the Museum who feed them and clean the moat regularly all year round!

SN3O0064

They all seem to be of the same variety with long colorful necks!

SN3O0065

They are quite clever at getting out of the water and at climbing on top of each other!

SN3O0066

hello, what’s up there?

SN3O0067

Are they practicing a rugby scrum or a Spanish human mountain?

Bring your camera next time. I’m sure you will take far better pictures!
