Vegan Japanese Cakes: Wagashi at Friand Kadoya in Shizuoka City!

Wagashi/和菓子, or “Japanese Cakes” are a boon for people who don’t eat eggs or dairy products.
No wonder they are witnessing a boom all over the world!
And true tradtional wagashi are not only healthy and tasty but also so artistic!

SN3O0315

now, in Shizuoka City there a splendid and very traditional cake shop called Friand Kadoya which makes both European-style and wagashi cakes!
It is a famous establishment place and their wagashi can be enjoyed at Issa Kissa in Shizuoka JR Station!
Actually the shop stand less than 10 minutes on foot from the Shizuoka JR Station South Exit!

SN3O0324

SN3O0316

“Friand/ふりあん” can be loosely translated as “gourmet’s pleasure”, although the French will useful it in the expression, “Je suis friand de…/I love…”. The word “friandise/sweets” is the noun for the adjective “friand”!

SN3O0318

Mr. Eiji Asaba/浅場栄一さん is the 3rd geneartion owner/chef at Friand Kadoya.
After graduating from High School he spent 2 years learning his craft in a wagashi cake school in Tokyo for 2 years and worked for 2 and a half more years in Tokyo before working under his father’s supervision for 13 years. he has been the owner and chef for the last 7 years following the father’s departure from this world.

SN3O0337

The wagashi cakes are separately displayed.
They are exclusively made with komeko/rice flour grown and produced in Japan. Sometimes he does have to use a little wheat flour.
All coloring used in his cakes are either of natural vegetable and fruit origins or coloring only registered and allowed by the Japanese Government.

SN3O0319

March being a very busy season I had to content myself with a short chat with Mr. Asaba, a very affable man, and taking enough photographs to give you an indication of the true delicacies and works of art in wait for you!

SN3O0320

All wagashi can be bought separately, in pairs or in packages of varying volume!

Shizuoka Green Tea & Wagashi Cake at Shizuoka JR Station: KIssa Issa Tea Cafe!

Service: Extremely kind and hospitable
Facilities and Equipment: Spotless clean. Entirely non-smiking!
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Great variety of green tea from Shizuoka City only on sale. Choice of three different teas offered every week. Local wagashi cakes!

SN3O0323

4 years ago, in June exactly, Shizuoka JR Station was completely renovated and the basement linking the city to the north exit saw the birth of some very interesting shops!
If you arrive directly at Shizuoka JR Station take the stairs down and you will find Kissa Issa Tea cafe on your left. You will find it on your right if you reach the station from the basement passageway!

SN3O0324

You are graciously invited to taste Shizuoka City Green Tea!
This cute little cafe was the idea behind a collaboration project between the Shizuoka City Tea Growers Association and the Municipal Government of Shizuoka City!

SN3O0325

A great range of green tea bags, regularly changed, for a very reasonable price!
Bear in mind that Shizuoka Prefecture produces more than 45% of all green tea in Japan and that Shizuoka City is one of the main growing areas!

SN3O0326

The whole list of Green Tea Growers and Companies in Shizuoka City!

SN3O0327

You can also buy take-out hot green tea (but consume it on site. This is not Starbucks!)!

SN3O0328

Green is the color of tea!
Closed on Wednesdays only, but always open on week-ends and National Holidays for the pleasure of the many visitors!

SN3O0329

Smokers, keep out if you please!

SN3O0331

More green teas on sale inside! The tea on offer is regularly changed to enable the sale of all the Shizuoka City green tea!

SN3O0332

The Tea Cafe! A great place for a break between two trains or a rendez-vous with a special one!

SN3O0343

Great staff! Local, smiling and so attentive!

SN3O0333The menu!

Written in Japanese, but the staff will try their best to explain it!

SN3O0344

The three teas proposed on the menu every week are also displayed for purchase near the cash register!

SN3O0334

There were two different Japanese wagashi cakes available made by Friand Kadoya, a top-class wagashi shop in Inagawa Cho, Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City, just south of the JR Station!
The one I chose is a kinton and sweetmeat/anko cake named Na no Hana/rapeseed flower!

SN3O0335

And the tea I chose was a Tamachi No Aji Ichiban (made with first tea crop leaves)!

SN3O0336

My set!
The staff prepare the first cup of tea and serve a pot of water for the next cups!

SN3O0337

The first cup of green tea!

SN3O0338

The brown pot contains enough hot water for the second and third cups of tea.
For the second cup of tea you pour hot water into the green pot first and then into the small tea pot filled with leaves.
This way your tea will be at the right temperature.
As for the third cup you pour directly the hot water from the brown pot into the small tea pot as the temperature will just right inside the brown pot by then!

SN3O0339

The wagshi cake, a little jewel!

SN3O0340

It is supposed to represent the shape of rape seed flowers!

SN3O0342

Filled with sweetmeat!
And it’s vegan!
Made by Friand Kadoya (see below for details!)!

Aoi Brewing Brewery In Shizuoka City-Latest news: The Equipment Has Arrived!

The brewing equipment has finally reached Aoi Brewery in Shizuoka City!

SN3O0280

I took the opportunity to visit Mrs. Kumiko Yasumoto/安本久美子さん, wife of the 6th generation owner of Yasumoto Shoten Store, and whose father used to make soy sauce. Now, the same soy sauce building has become the brand new Aoi Brewery!

SN3O0348

“Aoi” is the Japanese name for “hollyhock” and is the emblem plant on the crest of Shizuoka City and the Kunozan Shrine where Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu is enshrined.
Naoki Mando had to obtain a special permission to use this very crest from the above two entities!

SN3O0282

Of course he wears the crest on his working clothes!

SN3O0283

This will become a collector’s item!

SN3O0284

Generators and so forth are outside the brewery building under the parking roof.

SN3O0285

The equipment was imported from China, and it is tough work to assemble!
Naoki will need all his staff and specialists’ help to have it ready on April 1st when the Japan Tax Bureau will come to inspect the installations!

SN3O0286

From the extreme left, the hot water tnak, Brew kettle/whirlpool tank, and the mash/lauter combi-tank!

SN3O0287

The 4 tanks on the left and the middle one are fermentation tanks!

SN3O0288

These are the bright beer tanks and the keg sterilizer!

SN3O0289

The keg sterilizer!

SN3O0290

The keg washing machine!
I couldn’t take pictures of the two basins and ice water tank>

SN3O0356

The door to the refrigerated keg storeroom!

SN3O0291

The beer kegs!

SN3O0292

The tool storeroom!
I didn’t take a picture of the office room for obvious reasons!

SN3O0293

This will be the pub space to opened in September!
Soon or later the brewery will be off-limits!

If everything goes well we’ll taste the first Aoi Brewing Brewery craft beers in May!

Tea Festival Mural in Kanaya, Shizuoka Prefecture!

Yesterday during my visit to Kanaya, Shimada City, to collect as much information on the coming tea festival I belatedly noticed this big mural on the left hand side of the Kanaya JR Station exit! Actually many of my Japanese friends hadn’t heard of it!

SN3O0323

Mind you, it does look quite recent!
Let’s have a look at it!

SN3O0324

In fact the mural depicts scenes of the tea festival only!
Dancing “Tea Girls”

SN3O0325

Dancing Tea Girls and men beating smaller type Jpanaese drums!
The taiko/太鼓/drumming is also an imprtant part of the Festival!

SN3O0326

Men striking small and big drums!

SN3O0327

The whole mural is actually a double reflection of the scene!

SN3O0328

Looking forward to watching the real dancing Tea Girls on April 12th~13th!

Suspended Bridge in Arai Machi, Shizuoka Prefecture!

The area north of Arai Machi, in spite of its professional outboard boat races and rowing practice waterfronts is a pretty drab place except maybe for one sole eye-catching site!

SN3O0212

It is a suspended bridge of enormous proportions, that is, for a small agglomeration that does not deserve the name of “shi/市”/city!
But you can already see it through the windows of the almost derelict JR Arai Station!

SN3O0213

As I had plenty of time on hand that I decided to walk to it for close and precise observation!

SN3O0215

I first to walk quite a circuitous way around the giant parking reserved for the boat race punters!

SN3O0216

I finally made it to the main road called Shiomi Bypass which had to be built in 1996, not so much for the boat races, but because people had to cross the large stretch of Hamana Lake which would force people to drive around for more than 50 km!

SN3O0217

Getting near!
What you see on the left is a sheltered access to the car park!

SN3O0219

The lane on the left leads to a small marina for pleasure boats and rowing!

SN3O0221

I don’t know how tall it is, but it must be at least 50 meters!

SN3O0223

The cables are actually long metal tubes.
The whole edifice seems quite light. Considering the eventuality of high winds, typhoons and even earthquakes, it gives an impression of “bending but not breaking”!

SN3O0224

It does make for some inventive photography with the few trees nearby!

SN3O0225

A curved shape definitely looks more resilient!

SN3O0228

Quite “simple” in concept!

SN3O0227

It is still the only support for the bridge!

SN3O0230

All strength and flexibility!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 31: Arai Machi

Arai machi, since included into Hamamtsu City is bit of a strange place completely separated not only by the station (you have to pay 180 yen anytime you want to go to the other side) but also by a sea arm.
The interesting manhole covers lie south of the Arai Machi JR Station while the north housing the professional outboard boat races is pretty drab.

SOUTH SIDE:

SN3O0251

The original manhole cover for Arai Machi!
I wonder what the colored one looked like!

SN3O0258

Arai Machi is really confusing as this manhole cover seems to belong to belong to neighboring Kosai City!

SN3O0257

Same for this one, too!

SN3O0254

This pressurized air manhole cover on the other hand solely belongs to Arai Machi!

SN3O0253

Same for this water valve pit!

SN3O0249

A smaller and different valve pit!

SN3O0252

Now, this valve pit definitely belongs to Kosai City!

SN3O0250

A smaller Arai Machi water valve pit!

SN3O0261

A medium-sized gas valve pit in the middle of the road!

SN3O0262

An even bigger gas valve pit still in the middle of the road! They were neighbors and I did take a risk photographing them! LOL

NORTH SIDE

SN3O0238

It is the first time I such a shape for any manhole cover! A strange air access for firemen!

SN3O0231

A very long one for “high electricity”!

SN3O0232

Probably stands for high voltage electricity!

SN3O0233

Same shape for “low electricity”!

SN3O0234

I wonder if they mean “low electricity output” instead of low voltage electricity!

SN3O0235

A sewer manhole cover by Ohtake foundry!

SN3O0237

Same but with low voltage electricity indication!

SN3O0241

A vertical marking instead of a round indication for low voltage electricity!

SN3O0239

Same but for high voltage electricity!

SN3O0240

Drainage manhole cover!

SN3O0242

Shizuoka Prefecture electricity manhole cover!

Kura: Japanese Traditional Warehouse in Akihabara, Tokyo, by Patricia Yarrow!

“Kura” (in Japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditional Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

AKIHABAR-2

My good Tokyo friend, Patrica Yarrow, who regularly visits Shizuoka, is also a fine of old houses and architecture in Japan.
She has just sent me this photo of a grand old kura in Akihabara,Tokyo!

AKIHABAR-3

For all the black patina the walls and windows seem still very sound indeed!

AKIHABAR-4

The roof and rain water piping are not that old, so the place is definitely still being used.
Note the grand contrast with the white building background!

AKIHABAR-5

Patricia’s comments:

“Here is a photo of a fine old brick kura in Akihabara, just a stone’s throw from the highway and super-modern Yodobashi flagship store.
It must have quite a story to tell, but for now it is providing protected space for vending machines and gomi/rubbish…”

Shizuoka Sake Tasting: Takashima Brewery-Hakuin Masamune Junmai Dai Ginjo 23 Brewing Year

SN3O0212

Takashima Brewery has produced another extravagant beauty!

SN3O0213

This time the label has turned into a calligraphy lesson!

SN3O0215

It is a junmai dai ginjo, the very top of the scale, and also a genshu/no pure water added!
A venture into purity!

SN3O0214

Rice: Yamada Nishiki (Hyogo Prefecture)
Rice milled down to 40%
Alcohol: 16~17 degrees
Brewed in 2012
Bottled in November 2013

Clarity: Very clear
Color: Light golden hue
Aroma: Assertive, fruity, elegant. Custard, faint bananas.
Body: Fluid
Taste: Soft, dry and fruity attack backed up with puissant junmai petillant.
Complex. Custard, oranges, late appearance of dark chocolate.
Softer than expected in spite of its genshu high alcohol contents.
Disappears fairly quickly with hints of dry almonds
Elegant. Stays true all the time.
Takes a drier turn with food revealing hints of almonds and mandarines.
Will turn back to its original facets after a little while once away from food again.

Overall: An extravagant sake!
So elegant and surprisingly easy to drink in spite of its alcohol contents.
Although it superbly marries with any food, it should be drunk alone for its own value.
Don’t even drink it as a superb aperitif, but enjoy it as a late night cap, reading an absorbing book, watching a great movie or in the arms of your beloved one.
Of course a sake to introduce to a special company of connoisseurs!
