Shizuoka Prefecture Bars & Pubs Recommended List (updated!)

TWO BASE in Shizuoka City!

SN3O0010

Service: a bit shy but very friendly
Equipment & facilities: overall very clean. Excellent washroom if a bit small
Prices: Reasonable~slightly expensive
Strong points: Great list of sake. Stand bar with seats on pavement

SN3O0005

Just discovered a new bar cum izakaya cum standing bar in an unusual location at the very crossing of Egawa Street and Showa Street!

SN3O0006

The place is called “Two base”, not because of baseball but because it is the sister bar of another place called KODONA!
The concept is quite practical with the possibility to sit or stand at the counter or at a table on the pavement!

SN3O0003

Looking at the small refrigerator at the entrance you soon find out that sake is a staple there!

SN3O0001

Have a good look at the board outside before entering!

SN3O0002

The bar which Manager Yoshimi Mochizuki/望月良美さん also calls an izakaya offers quite a nice ever-increasing range of sake from the whole country!

SN3O0007

But it does offer more including shochu from Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0004

And don’t worry, there are also plenty of snacks!

SN3O0009

Now, what did I have for my first visit?

SN3O0008

A celebrated sake from Oomuraya Brewery in Shimada City: “Onna Nake/making a woman cry” junmai daiginjo!

SN3O0010

But I couldn’t take my leave before sampling this exquisite junmai ginjo by Ippaku Suisei Brewery from Akita Prefecture!

lright, you understood this is only the start of another long story! LOL

Manager: Yoshimi Mochizuki/望月良美さん
420-0033 Shizuoka City, Aoi Ku, Showa Cho, 8-1

Bar: 13 Anchorz in Shizuoka City!

SN3O0032

SN3O0022

Service: very easy–going and friendly.
Equipment & facilities: Very clean overall. Superb washroom. 2 floors
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Better than average pub/bar food. Drinks, of course!

SN3O0025

The “drinking scene” in Shizuoka City has been changing pretty quickly recently and an area worth a second and third look is a new alley tucked on the first floor of a building called Imakoko in Shichiken Cho Aoi Ku) in the a street just parallel to Showa Street.

Among the bars, restaurants and izakaya you will discover a quaint place with an even stranger name, “13 Anchorz”!

SN3O0023

With a sign like that you can’t go wrong! LOL

SN3O0027

The place was open on January 11th this year as indicated on this sake bottle!

SN3O0026

You can’t miss it with such a view inside!

SN3O0024

Written in English!
Reasonable drinks and food.
Opened late ad closed late!

SN3O0031

The young owner, Kyoken Sugiyama/杉山陽平さん, after a stint in the Japanese Self Defense Army did spend quite some time in Ireland before deciding to open his impossible to classify establishment as it is a combination of a bar and izakaya!

SN3O0030

One can sit at bar, especially welcome when you are on your own!

SN3O0029

Or you can sit at a table with company, or on the 2nd floor for more privacy!

SN3O0028

As for the drinks, you may choose your own bottled beer or bottle of wine and open it yourself or order it (you might have to wait some time though as Kyoken’s food is quite popular)!

SN3O0034

Have a good look at the drinks and their “companions” at the bar!

SN3O0033

I had a menacing Mexican IPA for a start!

SN3O0035

Have a good look at the menu!
The ladies will love this soft blue cheese called Fourme D’Ambert (France) served with honey nuts and bread!

SN3O0036

Now, this the dish I would recommend to all (coming into 3 different sizes!)!

SN3O0037

Fish and chips made with mahi mahi fish from Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0038

Arguably the best fish and chips in Shizuoka City!

SN3O0039

Great when washed down with American Anchor Steam Beer!

Expect me to visit the place again soon as the music is also terrific!

Hug Coffee Cafe & Bar in Shizuoka City!

SN3O0001

Service: easy-going and smiling
Equipment & facilities: All a bit narrow but very clean. Excellent washroom shared on 2nd floor of same Sunrrose building. Non–smoking
Prices: reasonable~ a little expensive
Strong points: 34 coffees and teas, craft beers, light food and bagels

SN3O0003

Hug Coffee Company in Shizuoka City has three cafes/shops/bars in town, all different in style and concept.
They are increasingly becoming popular with all genders and ages for their convenience.
My favorite is the one called Hug Coffee Espresso Rosters (also called “sangouten”, meaning “3rd shop”!) between Cenova Department Store 109 Building for many reasons.

SN3O0010

It reminds me of my psychedelic years and the staff is cool and sometimes outright zany.
Actually the Lady In Charge, Miyako Suzuki/鈴木京さん is a god friend of mine.
First of all smokers are kindly asked to pry their trade far away for the shop!

SN3O0002

All drinks are made on site to satisfy all cravings!

SN3O0009

But the main attraction is their beers including no less than 9 brews by Baird Beer, the most famous craft beer Company in Shizuoka prefecture!

SN3O0007

They even serve a very limited (hurry, as it is only seasonal, although they plan to serve it every year!) Moening Coffee Stout made in collaboration with Bryan Baird and their own coffee!
Tasting report coming soon!

HUGS-BAIRD-3

Bryan Baird’s recent visit to Hugs Coffee Espresso Roasters!

Fruit Cocktails by Masayoshi Tainaka at Bar Le Refuge

Service: Pro and very friendly, if a bit shy
Facilities: Great overall cleanliness. Beautiful washroom.
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Great Fruit Cocktails. Very quiet and relaxing bar. Difficult to find liqueurs.

Shizuoka Prefecture is actually the third producer of kiwi fruits in Japan way ahead of the rest!
It is full season for all kind of varieties during the winter and here is another basic recipe for any kind of this exquisite fruit!

INGREDIENTS:

Kiwi fruit: 1
Sugar (if possible “wasanbon satou/和三盆砂糖”): 2 small teaspoons
Bacardi white rum: 30 ml
Crushed ice
Mint leaves

RECIPE:

Put the cut kiwi, sugar, Bacardi white rum in a blender and blend roughly.
Taste and rectify with a dash of rum if necessary.
Add crushed ice and blend again until smooth.
Pour into an elegant cup glass.
Decorate with a half slice of kiwi fruit and a sprig of fresh mint.
Provide straws.

Very sophisticated and satisfying freshness.
A lady’s favorite, but as a man I was extremely pleased!
A very healthy cocktail actually!

Irish Pub: Beer House Tirnan-Og In Hamamatsu City by Guest Blogger Matthew Davis!

TIRNAN-OG-3

TIRNAN-OG-13

Tirnan-Og is the Hamamatsu outlet for the now famous Baird Beer. A 10-minute walk from JR Hamamatsu Station, between the Daiichi-Dori Station (Enshu Railway Line) and the lively Sakana-machi area of downtown Hamamatsu.

TIRNAN-OG-8

Tirnan-Og currently carries all 12 of the Year-Round Beers and seasonal selections.
I have been lucky enough to live in Hamamatsu for 1.5 years and I have tried all 12 of the Year-Round Beers and now focus my visits around the seasonal beers.

TIRNAN-OG-1

The shop seems to attract a variety of clientele; ex-pats, business travelers, and dedicated locals. What I enjoy most is that there never seems to be an overly boisterous group. Although laughter and mixed conversation are always present, the atmosphere reflects the fact that people are there to enjoy the finely crafted beer, and the behavior reflects likewise.
The shop is also completely non-smoking (small smoking patio is available), there is no table charge, and payments are cash only.

TIRNAN-OG-10

The shop will hold approximately 10 people at the bar, 10-12 at small crowded tables and 3-4 more in a small corner. As you would expect weekends can be crowded so it’s always best to call ahead and check on the seating and make your reservation as necessary.
The room is lined in a light colored wood paneling and gives a very warm crafted and quite feel. The front of the shop looks out and up to the lively street above.
The tables and bar are always clean as well as the small kitchen that is visible from the bar. Single restroom for both men and women is well maintained.

Food

TIRNAN-OG-11

Although the menu has quite a few snacks I would not consider this a “dinner” spot.
I would typically eat Tandoori Chicken although on my last few visits they have been sold out.
Again with plenty to choose from so you will certainly not be disappointed if you need a quick snack.

TIRNAN-OG-12

Karaage – Hot Crispy and served with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce.
Sandwich – Two Small Sandwiches. A straight-forward Ham and Cheese, and next is a cream cheese, nut and dried fruit spread. I must say I am in love with the cream
cheese spread.
Pizza – Maghretti style pizza with a tortilla crust.

Again the food is simple, light, and prepared to order.

Beers

TIRNAN-OG-7

You will find all 12 of the Year-Round Beers available as well as the seasonal selection. There is simply no way to rank these selections, or make strong recommendations. My advice would be to start with your preferred beer style, then try something you typically don’t drink. I tend to drink more IPA and wheat beers, and shy away from porters and dark stouts. Although when I tried the Kurofune Porter and Shimaguni Stout I have to say I was pleasantly surprised how light it was, although it maintained all the flavor and richness you expect from these styles.

As for this visit I again focused on the two seasonal and ended the night with a familiar favorite.

TIRNAN-OG-2

Mikan Ale (seasonal)

Served: Draft
Unfiltered
ABV: 7% Alcohol
Clarity: smoky, with a dull yellow and orange color
Aroma: Over Ripe Musky Mikan and Citrus (Bittersweet Peel)
Taste: More hoppy than expected (I have not seen a published IBU value for Baird Beers). Mikan hints, but the bitter sweet of the peel was most noticeable. Not a sweet fruity beer at all.
Overall: Excellent Seasonal, but would not be a daily drinker.

Spiced Amber Ale (seasonal)

Unfiltered
ABV: 7% Alcohol
Clarity: smoky, with a brown and amber color
Aroma: Winter spices (Cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove)
Taste: Spot on Amber Ale with a nice helping of the Winter Spices. Less hoppy than the Mikan Ale.
Overall: Excellent Seasonal, and I was tempted to order another.

Wabi-Sabi Pale Ale (regular offering)

Filtered?
ABV: 6% Alcohol
Clarity: Golden and non-intimidating
Aroma: Lightly hopped.
Taste: I have tried to better understand the Japanese meaning of wabi-sabi and I think this beer sums it up. It is likely the most balanced beer in the Baird Beer line-up.
Overall: Daily Drinker. Can’t go wrong.

AOI BAR STAND in Shizuoka City

SN3O4714

Baird Beer Rising Sun!

Service: Easy-going and smiling. Very hospitable and friendly
Facilities: Very clean overall. Washroom inside Den Bldg, extremely clean and modern
Prices: Reasonable to slightly expensive (but craft beer is never cheap!)
Strong points: All micro brewery craft beers!

SN3O4703

After the recent complete overhaul of Den Building in Aoi Ku a few minutes walk form Shizuoka JR Station North exit, the large street and its pavements were also remade and now we find ourselves with a new space downtown which is slowly starting to attract a new crowd.

SN3O4704

The latest addition is a minuscule standing bar called Aoi Beer Stand which opened on the 1st of July!
It is the last addition to Beck Co. Ltd which already owns Mando and Growstock bar/restaurants in Shizuoka City.
To start with the opening hours are a bit unusual: 11:00 am to 11:00 pm every day!

SN3O4705

The name Aoi is fairly easy to explain as this bar is located in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O4706

But there is another reason. Mr. Mando, who I should interview soon, is planning to start a brewery of the same name in the very city of Shizuoka! I know where but as this is still confidential you will have to wait until next year for more information! Just know it will become the 11th craft beer brewery/microbrewery in the Prefecture! Whereas the average number of microbreweries in Japan is 5~6 per Prefecture, Shizuoka Prefecture is simply becoming a major area!

SN3O4709

Ever-smiling Ryousuke Ono/大野良輔さん is looking after the place in day time whereas Mr. Mando take things in charge in the evenings.

SN3O4708

Now, they serve only craft beer and absolutely nothing else!
For the mement they serve 6 craft beer from all over Japan (changing regularly), including 2 from Shizuoka prefecture.
When the new brewery starts they will probably serve only Shizuoka craft beer!
Note that the prices are for large glasses. Add 200 yen for a pint-sized glass.

SN3O4713

Although the place can sit 6 people on high stool, the moment you have reached 7 guests the stools are pushed under the bar counter and you drink standing. on some crowded nights patrons can be seen drinking standing on the pavement!

SN3O4712

The door inside on the left does not lead to a washroom (which is located inside Den Den Building) but a minuscule cellar for the beer kegs as all beers are served draught!

SN3O4707

The two Shizuoka craft beers presently on offer are from Baird Beer Co. in Numazu City!

SN3O4710

Baird Beer Red Rose Amber Ale!

SN3O4711

There is some food available though, but the accent is definitely on the beer!

Will come back with another interview of the owner and of his projects soon!

The Ale House in Fujieda City (Summer 2013-revisited)

SN3O4558

Service: Friendly and smiling, all in a very quiet atmosphere (when not full!)
Facilities: Overall very clean. Clean washroom
Prices: Reasonable to slightly expensive
Strong points: Shizuoka Micro breweries’ beers on tap, Belgian beers and pub grub.

SN3O4557

There are very few pubs, I mean real pubs, British or Irish, worth noticing in our Prefecture.
But I surely don’t mind traveling all the way from Shizuoka City to Fujieda City and come back with the last train back home under the questioning looks from commuters going back to their sleeping town! Fortunately The Ale House is only less than 10 minutes away from the south exit of the JR Station!

It has become one of those “kakureya” (“hidden spots”) that a lot of residents expats talk about, and deservedly so.
Would you believe it I visited it for the first time again in 6 years with a motley of friends! They stille remembered me, though! LOL

SN3O4559

At least it looks like a real pub!

SN3O4560

But I let my English friend Patrick of Think Twiceguide me along and introduce me to the matser of the Place, Mr. Masayuki Saitou
Mr. Saitou explained us he opened his Pub in 1995 out a search for a new challenge away from the dreary life of a typical Japanese “salaryman”, and indulge in his hobby, namely whisky.
Talking of whisky, he does have an impression collection, but you will have to ask him to show it as it is protected from the spotlights inside wooden cabinets!
Now, if you are a beer lover, he has an extra treat for you, a proof of his dedication: baird Beer from Numazu City and Bayern Meister Bier from Fujinomiya City on tap!

SN3O4561

The only problem is that it is really tough to take clear pictures in the very dark lounge bar!

SN3O4562

Some of the beers available with their country of origin clearly marked. Don’t worry Mr. Saitoh will somehow explain everything if you don’t read Japanese!

SN3O4564

Some of these are actually sometimes available!

SN3O4565

The food menu ( a lot of typical pub grub) is in Japanese but the master will gladly help you read it!

SN3O4566

the same for the drinks!

SN3O4567

Interestingly enough, people here do not know we do have quite a few notable “jibiru”, microbreweries, in Shizuoka Prefecture!
Now if you are into cocktails, no worries, the Ale House has more than you can drink.

SN3O4569

Beers come in all kinds of sizes, shapes, colors, on the tap and in bottles!

SN3O4570

Long ones, too?

SN3O4572

These beer coasters were everywhere! Now, who is this guy?

SN3O4574

A very dark beer in a very dark place! LOL

SN3O4573

there is plenty of grub (foods) to choose from:
Cheese assortment.

SN3O4575

Fried potato wedges with their skins.

SN3O4576

Pickles.

SN3O4577

Sausages.

SN3O4578

Spicy potatoes.

SN3O4579

Keema pizza!

SN3O4580

Skillet-fried chicken and vegetables.

SN3O4582

Spicy mushroom noodles.

SN3O4583

And even desserts such as this pear tart!

I won’t want 6 years till my next visit, I can assure you!

GROWSTOCK

Service: very lively and friendly.
Facilities: great cleanliness overall.
Prices: reasonable, good value.
Strong points: Beer from all over the world. Outside terrace. Local microbrewery beer available in some quantities.

Grow Stck is the second establishement of the company running Mando tapas Bar and Cherry Beans diner in Shizuoka City.
It was open in March 2009 and has since become one of the most popular bars ofits kind in town

Although the place can be really crowded at times, it is not that easy to find if it is your first visit in town. Located on the 5th floor of Koyama Naka Building in Koyamachi, one of the drinking areas in Shizuoka City, it is worth exploring the vicinity as they have the advantage of offering a real otdoors terrace:

I took the pic in day time and it does really does it justice. It is a great site to lounge around in the summer (not on rainy or cold days, mind you as it is not covered!) in happy company!

Check the board at the entrance for events and good deals.
Although it is written in Japanese, the Manager, Mr. Ryousuku Ono and his staff will be only too happy to oblige and answer your queries!
The clientele is a good mix of Japanese, young to old, local foreigners who know their beer and guests from both genders who want to enjoy themselves!

As its name clearly indicates, it is a place to savour beer.
And they have loads of it:
More than a 100 from all over the world in bottles.
7 draft beers.
Local microbrewery beers! Bryan Baird from Numazu City, and as guests (depends on your lucky day!) draft beer from Bayern Meister in Fujinomiya City, Hansharo Beer from Hirayama in Izu Peninsula and Kaze no Tani/Windy Valley by Oratche in Kannami (Misj\hima City)!

Baird Beer come in bottles!

But there is plenty of other drinks for everyone from Scotch/Bourbon, wine/Jizake (Kikuyoi from Fujieda City!) to cocktails and soft drinks!

Sit at the counter and try to recognize the beers!

That is unless you want to hang onto the draft beer handles!

Peruse through the beer book! They even have Pietra beer from French Corsica!

As for the food, no worries whatsoever!
You can either choose it a la carte such as the fish and chips above or as a course.
Apart of the fish and chips, they serve interesting Belgian mussles steamed in Beer, Beef Carbonade, German Pork and Buffalo Chicken Wings.
Check the pasta, pizza and paella of the day.
Vegetarians can order vegetarian salads!

The place can also be parially or completely reserved for parties as it can provide for up to 100 guests! And TV screens will show big events if you are short of reasons to patronize the establishment!

COCKTAIL BAR: BOTANICAL (Comfort Bar)

Haaru Lemon Cocktail
(Courtesy of Yoko Kosugi)

Service: very professional and friendly.
Facilities: great washroom, great cleanliness overall.
Prices: reasonable, good value.
Strong points: Fruit cocktails. Cozy and a comfortable, for ladies and gentlemen alike.

After having established a solid reputation as one of the best bartenders in Shizuoka City for quite a few years in a cocktail bar called Yasougin, Wataru Matsumoto decided it was about time to open his own in July 20009 to the pleasure of his customers who just “moved” to his new place called BOTANICAL (Comfort Bar) without batting an eyelid (or eyelash for some).

Contrary to many similar bars, you do not need a guide to take you up dark stairs and through involuted passageways to find it. It stands right along the street behind Isatan Department Store next to a renown ladies fashion shop. One can see the inside through windows, very much in with the new concept to show as much interior as possible to passers-by and eventual customers. No wonder ladies feel comfortable sipping their favourite nectar in peace and quiet with similarly-minded guests.

Even so at night, it is all soft light and soothing background music.
Customers do enjoy casual conversations with unknown (until then) individuals or keep to themselves in a very laid back manner.

Passion Fruit Cocktail

A good dozen guests can sit at the bar or sit at one of the small tables by the window.
Wataru Matsumoto caters for many tastes with his own very precise selection: 30 Scotch Whiskies, 10 Bourbons, 20 Liqueurs and even unknown shochu from Shizuoka Prefecture.
French Mumm Champagne is available by the glass.
But his forte is definitely seasonal fruit cocktails. Just ask what fruit is available and how sour, sweet, flat or petillant you like it and expect a marvel to stand in front of you after a great demonttrations of his art!

“Kinkan” Fruit Cocktail (Kumquat、Cumquat)

I actually plan to run a special series on Mr. Matsumoto fruit cocktail creations as he is more than happy to share his recipes!

Incidentally prices are very reasonable for this type of establishment in Japan. Count 1,800 yen for the first cocktail (with obligatory snack) and 800 yen from the second one. Light food is also available as well as soft drinks, beer and coffee.

A superb place to visit on your own, with a grteat friend or your special guest”

New Pub in Shizuoka! Beer No Yokota serving Baird Beer!

Service: very friendly
Facilities: very clean
no-smoking-logoNon-smoking!
Strong points: The beer!

I finally managed to find the time to visit Beer No Yokota Pub twice since its opening last Sunday!
It was not easy to do a proper interview as the place gets crowded very quickly as the word has spread in town like a bush fire!

As I said before, it is located in Gofuku-cho behind the City Hall, only 10 minutes walk away from Shizuoka JR Station, making it a very practical place to meet and enjoy true beer!

True beer, you said?

Yep, true beer as the owner, a very easy-going gentleman, Mr. Fumitake Yokota worked for Bryan Baird at the Numazu Fishmarket Taproom for 4 years before looking after the Nakameguro Taproom in Tokyo, is serving no less than 7 beers concocted by Bryan Baird on the tap and 5 more from other breweries. more are bound to come soon as there 15 taps!

Suruga Bay Imperial Stout

Alright you want to know about the beer menu already in place?
Here you are:
-PROMPTON ALE: Y700 (473ml), Y500 (300ml)/original!
-BAIRD BEER: Y800 (473ml), Y550 (300ml)
RISING SUN PALE ALE
RED ROSE AMBER ALE
NUMAZU LAGER
TEIKOKU IPA
ANGRY BOY BROWN ALE

SURUGA BAY IMPERIAL STOUT (+Y50)
-YOKOHAMA BEER PILSNER: Y800 (420ml)
-ATSUGI HONEY ALE: Y900 (420ml)
-HATSUISHIKAN BEER WINTER SMOKE: Y900 (420ml)
-EDELWEISS (AUSTRIA): Y900 (420ml)
-WESTON CIDER: Y600 (300ml)

The pub can seat around 40 guests at tables, a counter along the kitchen or counters running along the wall and window.
My favourite spot is definitely at the counter at the window!
Don’t worry, there is still more space for standing guests who pefer wandering between tables and customers!

Don’t steal these!

Note that Yokota san is using a very clever on the tap draught system taking only minimum space thanks to Japanese technology!

Sports buffs will be glad to discover a screen with Sky TV Sports!

Toilets are are both for ladies (seat) and gentlemen (standing). Very clean for such an establishment! Always good to know!

Apart of the beer, cocktails and whisky are available.
As for food, expect pub grub! Spicy fried potatoes, snacks, simple pasta…
Alright, here is the present food menu (bound to change!):

SPEAK-EZ

By John Gooden

speak-ez-brent

Speak EZ Bar was established in 2000 by a young Canadian man named Brent. It is located in the centre of Numazu city. The bar is at the heart of the gaijin community in the city. It’s a popular watering hole where people come to enjoy draught kirin, imported bottled beers or cocktails. There’s also a food menu offering a range of delicious ‘pub grub’, such as pizza, hamburger, Mexican wraps, homemade chilli con carne and Aussie meat pies.

speak-ez-bar1 speak-ez-bar2 speak-ez-barschool-exterior2

Brent along with his dedictated and friendly staff are bi-lingual and always take the time to get to know the customers. During the week the bar has a laid back mellow feeling with a few regulars dropping in for a chat, a bite to eat and a drink. There’s a darts board and free internet for those looking for activities. There’s also a free library filled with interesting books for those who are in need of English reading matter. At the weekends the bar transforms into a lively venue for various events including live music, salsa nights, and DJ nights. On ocassion sports fans gather to watch soccer and American football on the big widescreen TV at the bar.

The clientele is a refreshing mix of foreigners and local Japanese. The bar is not only popular with American, Canadian, Australian and British teachers but also attracts many South American and Middle Eastern patrons.

BAR NO’AGE

noage10.jpg

After a grand dinner at Aquavite, the best Italian restaurant in Shizuoka City, I just could not resist my good friend, Mr. Naohiro Momose’s invitation to his favourite Cocktail Bar, NO’AGE.
As the name indicates, all customers of all ages are welcome. I’m sure that a certain Roaf in Yokohama would make it his personal lair as it is not only a great place with grand drinks, but is also very reasonable!

no-age2.jpg no-age3.jpg no-age4.jpg
For our first round Naohiro opted for Fennel Gin Fizz, our friend Mika chose a more feminine drink, Karien (Greek for chestnut Liqueur) including plenty of cream, while I went for a NO’AGE creation called Kinkan (small ornages) Vodka Gimlet.
To tell you the truth, these went down a bit too quickly!

no-age7.jpg no-age6.jpg
Poor Mika being left behind, Naohiro ordered a very classical (very) Dry martini, while I chose to check the Chestnut Liqueur (French) they used for our poor lass’ brew.

no-age5.jpg
While we nibbled on a welcome snack, we engaged into a serious conversation with Mr. and Mrs. Itani, the young owners who opened this cozy bar on the 21st of June 2007. Being a Monday, I noticed taht the place was quite busy for the beginning of the week, a sure sign of its popularity. Ladies and gents were equally represented, while I was the only old geezer on hand.

no-age8.jpg no-age9.jpg
Poor little Mika was still struggling finishing her own glass while the “men” were asking the one for the road:
Naohiro obtained “up to date”, a Bourbon based concoction while I asked something based on Mirabelle. I was served a succulent “Allegro” containing Mirabelle, Apricot and lemon juice (shaken).

It was about time to leave then as work was in wait for all of us the next morning.
But the place was undoubtedly too welcoming and knowledgeable to forget easily!
Especially when you consider we hadn’t been able to even scratch the menu, which by the way includes plenty for teetals!
Problem is that I will have to wait at least a week before my next visit as I promised my (???) half I would cook all week!

LIFETIME

lifetime2.jpg

On November 27th, 2007, Fugetsuro Hotel revamped their first floor completely to replace the simple cake-shop/cafe they previously had with a very much larger cafe bar in Koya Machi across Shizuoka JR Station.
lifetime1.jpg
As far as the cafe itself, it is very probably the only decent Hotel Cafe Bar in town.
It is large, but not overwhelming, seating about 80 people. One can either choose a seat at the counter, inside the room or in one of the street-facing lodges. Excellent background jazz music and friendly staff.
lifetime3.jpg lifetime4.jpg
Do not be too harsh on the English written on the menu. The place does serve quite a few dishes apart of their cakes made on site that you can either savour inside or take home.
As for drinks, every taste is covered as they include very good coffees and a surprisingly long array of teas served in beautifull china.
lifetime5.jpg
For the late drinkers (and their companions), malt whiskies, beer, wine, sake and even a kome/rice shochu by Sugii Brewery in Fujieda City called Saisuke!

Now the big plus is the regular Jazz Concert Programme every Thursday, but forthat you had better consult their homepage! (the list id simply too longand impressive for this posting!)

“No Name Standing Bar”

standing2.jpg

For all the aping of Tokyo trends, real standing bars are a scarcity in Shizuoka Prefecture.
Although the concept should fit within the heavy-drinking environment prevalent in our region, especially Shizuoka City, it does not seem to appeal.
True to say, people here are not in a hurry and prefer to stay long in their favourite dens instead of the frantic bar hopping in vogue in larger metropolises.
Now, would you believe that the only standing bar worthy of attention in Shizuoka City does not have a name or phone number despite the fact it has been in existence for more than four years?
It is located along the subterranean thoroughfare grandly called “Golden Chikakai” linking Gofukucho Street to the JR Station. Enter it near Parco Department Store and walk along the left-hand side passageway. You can’t miss as long as you keep your eyes open and take your time.
standing1.jpg
Now, if you are somewhat of a voyeur or exhibitionist, this might be the place to patronize at all hours of long evenings, as all kinds of passers-by hurry past it with long side glances at the denizens ogling at them behind the illusory safety of large glass window/doors.
Interestingly enough, gents and ladies of all ages both patronize this waterhole. You might therefore discover another personal reason for stopping by as it is comfortably air-conditioned for all seasons.
The Manager of the place, Mr. Sumiteru Yamato is always ready to serve you with a smile and a chat. All drinks are standard 500 yen (900 yen for full pints of draught beer). Snacks are available (200 to 500 yen). All COD. No cover charge. No surprise.
But plenty of scotch (including single malts), bourbon, cocktails, liqueurs, bottled and draft beer. Enough for the true fans.

Business hours: 17:00~24:00

White Ize Cafe/Bar

ize4.jpg

Many of my friends, expats and Japanese alike had been telling me about this new sports bar opened in July 2006, so it was about time I visited it!
Interestingly enough, although Shizuoka City are blessed with a plethora of good Izakaya, simple, unpretentious and well-stocked bars are almost a rarity.
ize2.jpg ize1.jpg
The least I could say is that they are extremely well-stocked as far as bottled beers are concerned: no less than 96 brands and still looking for more!
I even had the occasion to taste a beer from the French Island Corsica called Pietra I had never heard of! (A fine beer, by the way!). There are varieties for everyone, including a whopping 14 degrees ale from Austria!
ize3.jpg
White Ize has 3 screens for customers to watch all current sports. The coming Rugby World Cup will be shown live from France from September 9th. Ozzies and Kiwis had better reseve their seats!
Apart of beers, cocktails and other drinks are available. Food is Tex-Mex and reasonably priced.
The owner, Mr. Kazuyoshi Harazaki is an old hand at both fishing, boating and boozing and always keen to share a chat. He is known to go on boating excursions with his customers, so better keep your ears open!

Hamamatsu Izakaya/ Shochu Bar: Nikomanma

nikomanma5.jpg

Last Friday (April 13th!), my good friend Bernard Heberle, the patissier at Abondance in Hamamatsu City, took me to one of his favourite “izakaya” called “Nikomanma” or “にこまん馬” in Japanese.
Mr. Michiaki Genma opened his very traditional looking resraurant near Wachiyama Park. The interior is the logical succession to the exterior in design with antiques eveywhere, wooden partitions you can open or close at will, parquet sitting room, dinin room and counter.
nikomanma2.jpg
Nikomanma specializes in shochu and has “Doman” kome (rice) shochu, a favourite of mine brewed by Tenjigura Brewery/Distillery in Hamamatsu City.
douman-shochu.jpg
But it also serves a very fine Junmai sake, “Shusseijyo”, from the same brewery.
nikomanma1.gif
It is a very popular place and you definitely have to reserve on Fridays and Saturdays. Luckily we came very early, otherwise even Bernard’s persuasion would have been in vain.
The menu is of the better kind with some real finds such as the squid and its ink as tempura!
nikomanma3.jpg
Try the Japanese omelette and deep-fried chicken, but start your meal with a sashimi assortment of the day!
nikomanma4.jpg
The place definitely warrants a few more visits as I could not possibly exhaust the menu, even in the company of my bulky friend!

Manhole Covers In Shizuoka Prefecture 35: New Commemorative Fire Hydrant Manhole Cover in Shizuoka City!

Last Friday the Shizuoka Municipal Government finally announced the creation of a new Fire hydrant manhole cover to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the death of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu in Sumpu Castle.
I decided some more investigation was in order and I visited the Shizuoka City Hall to find out where it was exhibited.
It wasn’t.
And nobody could tell me where to find it until a nice lady civil servant did some research and told me I would have to go to a Shizuoka City Works Office Water Distribution Department in Nishinakahara on the other side of the station! I actually cycled the wrong way, had to ask the way in a police station who didn’t know much more than me in spite of my 38-year residency.

SN3O0008

Looking at the nondescript building/office there is no way to know where you are.
Lucky that nice lady back in the Shizuoka City Hall did some good investigative wrok for me!
Not only this but she had forewarned a young civil servant of my coming!
And the least I can say is that he was ready with information and manhole covers!
But let’s have a look around first!

SN3O0004

The three types of manhole covers (plus the smaller ones) this particular office is in charge of installing and maintaining!
There are other types for electricity, gas, drainage waters, sewers, but they all are the reposiblity of as many offices! No wonder it is so difficult to find out information!

SN3O0002

The traditional fire fighting festival pole, “matoi/纏”!

SN3O0005

The traditional three fire fighting festival pole, a model probably older and definitely rarer!

SN3O0001

The cover commemorating the 400th anniversary of the coming of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu to Sumpu Castle

Most of the above three covers will be replaced with the new one in the two months to come.
Hurry to take photos of them before they disappear!

SN3O0011

The design of the new cover to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the death of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu in Sumpu Castle!

SN3O0017

Mr. Fujii had prepared color copies of the information for me!
The design represents Mount Fuji, Miho no Matsubara Beach, Kunozan Toshogun Shrine and Suruga Bay!
Relief accounts fro 54.56% of the surface!

The plaque is fabricated by a Shizuoka Company called Hinode Suidou Kiki Co.!

SN3O0018

40 covers will be fabricated for a total cost of 2,500,000 yen.
Each cover diameter is 530 mm, and each will weigh 24 kg!

SN3O0019

They will be installed to replace ld types around Sumpu Park and along the route from Shizuoka JR Station to the Sengen Shrine!

Mr. Fujii has promised to call me when the first cover will be installed for the benefit of the media!
New report in the offing, then!

SAKE BREWERIES

SN3O0053

Here below is the list of all 30 “kura”/breweries in Shizuoka Prefecture, which were “working” as of May 2014 (with some nuances and notes attached!)
They are listed in a “traditional” order.
Official business names of Breweries are also included. Keep in mind that some breweries also produce brands for individual shops or distributors: “Miwa No sato” by Fujinishiki, “Toro No sato” by Haginishiki, etc. as well as seasonal limited sake with different names.

SHIZUOKA CITY:

1) Suruga Brewery (Suruga Ku Ku): Tenko (also includes: Abekaido, Umifune No Yamahai, Chuemon, Hagi no Kura)

Following the early death of the owner/brewer the brewery has gone dormant although it keeps its license. Still has some sake for sale in its tanks!

6) Shizuoka Hiraki Brewery: Kihei. Technically, not entirely a Shizuoka Brewery as the original “half” Hiraki Brewery is a brewery in Okayama prefecture owned by Hiraki Company (owned by the Totsuka Family in Kakagawa City), a distributor for Tokyo, Nada and their regions’ major sake, liqueurs, etc.

1) Kikugenji (formerly of Toyoo Brewery) even sold in Shuzenji, Izu City, is no longer a Shizuoka sake but from a Nada brewery who bought the name before Toyoo Brewery was absorbed by Bandai Brewery in 2003 to be able to sell in its place of origin!

2) Fuuki in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City are not a sake brewery but an alcohol brewing and bottling company from the Nada area, although one of their casks is displayed at Sengen Shrine in Shizuoka City. They represented (and might even still) the biggest oke-gai in the Prefecture.

Shizuoka Beer Tasting: Kuraya-Narusawa Brewery-Hansharo Beer Nouhei Steam

Yesterday I had the occasion to taste a new beer by Kuraya-Narusawa, Izu no Kuni City, Izu peninsula, at AOI BEER STAND in Miyuki Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, as they often serve on tap beers by other Shizuoka Prefecture as a part of a constructive collaboration policy!

SN3O0273

The general name of beers produced by Kuraya-Narusawa Brewery are called Hansharo after the name of the ancient gun foundry of the same name standing inside their precincts.
They are a noteworthy brewery as they do experiment a lot, as far as to reproduce old style beer.
This particular beer is a steam beer reminiscent of what some German immigrants brewed in the States when they didn’t have the money to buy expensive equipment. The beer then was brewed at environmental temperature, a long process using lager yeast to produce an ale type beer.
Anchor Steam in San Francisco is a brewery still using this method for some of their beers.

SN3O0274

Served on tap
Barley,hop,live yeast
Unfiltered
Alcohol: 5 %
Clarity: slightly smoky (normal considering live yeast and being unfiltered), very clean
Color: dark orange
Bubbles: shortish head, fine bubbles, light orange hue
Aroma: Fruity, dry oranges, citruses
Taste: Dry and deep attack.
Bread.
Great acidity, very refreshing.
Varies little with food.

Overall: Very refreshing beer. Does not need to be overchilled.
Thanks to its acidity one can drink it for a long time without getting tired of it.
A discovery!

Visiting Shizuoka Prefecture by Bus 2: Shimada City~Ikumi Line

When you do not want to drive a car, nor ride a bicycle and when there is no railroad available the best means to travel through Shizuoka Prefecture is the bus. And it can prove cheaper as well!

SN3O0070

This time, still starting from Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Station North Exit Bus Platform, I went north along the Ikumi Line/Ikumi Sen/伊久身線 up in the mountains till the last station called Ikumi (different Japanese characters: 伊久美).
Note there is only one bus every hour!

SN3O0071

My bus!

SN3O0073

Although smaller than tourist buses, such vehicles have very large windows for perfect views!

SN3O0072

The trip altogether last an hour and runs along the Ooi River for about 20 minutes!
This particular line is heavily subsidized by the municipality to help tea farmers up in the mountains and the whole trip costs only 200 yen!

SN3O0074

The city is also taking care of some splendid lawn banks!

SN3O0075

Turning along the Ikumi River a tribute of the Ooi River!

SN3O0076

It becomes pretty narrow at times!

SN3O0077

It runs across narrow farm lands!

SN3O0078

in some areas it becomes a torrent between steep slopes!

SN3O0079

Some spots are very popular for camping, bathing and BBQ’s!

SN3O0080

The green tea grown on these mountains is among the best in Japan!

SN3O0081

These propellers help regulate the air and temperature for the tea leaves!

SN3O0082

Almost arrived!
Only 200 yen!

SN3O0083

My bus at the last stop up in the mountains!

SN3O0084

This very last stop is in Nihama!
Now, let’s walk and ride again!) all the way back to Shimada City to discover the sights!

SN3O0085

What’s over there?

SN3O0094

A splendid kura/蔵/Traditional Japanese warehoues in a perfect state!

SN3O0096

You will find some of the very old abodes of the local farmers!

SN3O0097

Green tea farms!

SN3O0098

A very ancient western-style house buit during the Meiji Era which now serves as a community center!

SN3O0100

It definitely warrants the appellation of a cultural asset!

SN3O0099

Look at that roof!

SN3O0101

Walking along the river…

SN3O0102

Green tea everywhere!

SN3O0081

More green tea!

SN3O0103

What are they doing?

SN3O0104

Catching ayu trouts!

SN3O0105

A sign to warn drivers that they are passing by an elementary school!

SN3O0106

It was a sweltering day and I would have welcomed a dip!

SN3O0107

Plenty of fish there, too!

SN3O0108

The local tea cooperative processing plant!

SN3O0109

The roof is green with tea particles!

SN3O0110

A wild boar hunters’ lodge!
The area is plagued with wild boars, deer and wild monkeys who feat on the farms!

SN3O0111

Some of the local farmers are still obviously well off!

SN3O0112

A double traditional house!

SN3O0113

With its rare and expensive linking hall!

SN3O0114

More modest traditional Japanese farmhouses!

SN3O0115

No, this house is not abandoned!

SN3O0116

It is a community agricultural equipment shed!

SN3O0117

Another ayu trout angler!

SN3O0120

The next bus stop!

SN3O0121

The last post office which also probably serves as a bank!

SN3O0122

The last Police box/”koban”!

SN3O0125

I had a great talk with this gentleman farmer!
He even gave me some frozen wild boar meat!

IKUMI-LINE-42

We talked in front of his home while I was waiting for the next bus!

SN3O0124

A tiny house shrine!

SN3O0236

I discovered this house along the river decorated with wind toys!

SN3O0253

Beside the bus stop next to the house stood a local Shinto shrine!

SN3O0263

The shrine was called Ooi Uami Shrine dedicated to the Ooi River in Uami District!

SN3O0262

It concealed a far more ancient and minuscule shrine!

SN3O0207

There are many Shinto shrines all along the Ooi River indeed!

HACHIMAN-6a

The Hachiman Shrine in Kawaguchi!

SN3O0127

Another bigger one!

SN3O0131

The Kanza Ooi Shrine!

SN3O0278

An even bigger one as I got nearer back to the center of Shimada City!

SN3O0283

The Sonsha Ooi Shrine!

SN3O0342

And even a small one “floating” on a small river!

SN3O0333

But I couldn’t find its name!

Where shall I go next?

From my Recipe Book: Chicken Meatballs Spaghettini with Marutaka Farm Puree

Cooking, especially at home, shouldn’t be difficult.
The point is to find and use good ingredients!

Marutaka Farm/まるたか農園 in Miyakoda, Hamamatsu City makes a truly extravagant tomato puree made with tomatoes originally grown solely to be eaten fresh. Not wishing to throw away good produce during the peak harvest season they started making this sauce with the pulp of the tomatoes with the sole addition of salt!

You can adapt it to any Italian recipes but must keep in mind it is not as concentrated as European tomato purees but more like sauces.
Each jar contains 270 g, enough to devise a recipe for two.

Chicken Meatballs Spaghettini with Marutaka Farm Puree

Meat balls:
Minced chicken
Grated garlic
Grated Ginger
Japanese sake or white wine (just enough for taste)
Salt
Pepper
Mayonnaise (to liaise instead of eggs)

Above proportions are up to your taste, so experiment!
Mix the whole and make small balls.

Fry some thinly sliced onions in olive oil first in a large and fairly deep fry-pan over medium high fire until they have become transparent.
Add meat balls and fry until they have change color to a light brown. Lower fire to medium low.

Start preparing the spaghettini.

Add a whole jar of Marutaka Tomato Puree and cook for a while. Add 1 large tablespoon of Port wine, 1 large tablespoon of basil sauce, pepper and a little curry mix powder. Add chili pepper powder if you like your pasta hot.

Add plenty of grape tomatoes and cook on a medium fire for a while or until spaghettini are ready.
Drain the pasta and transfer it into the sauce pan. Mix well. Add edamame and sliced black olives and mix again.

Serve hot!

Ooi Shrine (大井神社) in Shimada City (2): Ooi Ebisu Shrine (大井恵比寿神社)

Ooi Shrine (大井神社) in Shimada City within walking distance from Shimada JR station north exit is actually a group of shrines more or less dedicated to the Ooi River, a major river in Japan that travelers had to cross with the help of porters until the end of the Edo Era.
The one shrine I singled out this time is called Ooi Ebisu (大井恵比寿) as it is dedicated both to to the Oi Reiver and Ebisu God!

SN3O0172

I couldn’t find its founding date but it is quite old, even by Japanese standards!

SN3O0173

The roofing is in perfect condition although I suspect it must have been rebuilt many a time through the ages!

SN3O0174

Imposing lantern!

SN3O0175

It is particularly impressive at dusk!

SN3O0176

A new stone lantern standing by a venerable tree!

SN3O0179

This old bridge is open only on special occasions!

SN3O0177

Pity it is closed. I would have liked to investigate the interior!

SN3O0169

Very peaceful atmosphere in the evenings!

SN3O0170

Another ancient “monument”…

SN3O0178

I’ll be back soon, old tree!

I have very few occasions to visit the Yoshida Cho and Makinohara City areas by the waters of Suruga Bay in Central Shizuoka Prefecture as they are simply too far from the railroad linking the cities of Atamai and Hamamatsu through Mishimsa, Fuji, Shizuoka, Shimada and Kakegawa, but I found an easy enough way to reach them!

SN3O0001

First of all ride the train till Shimada JR Station along the Tokaido Line and get out from the North exit!

SN3O0003

Do pay a visit to the tourism information bureau on the left where they will give you all the information you need and more!

SN3O0004

The bus stop, No 3, is just across the street!

SN3O0005

Don’t forget to check the timetable!
There is only one bus to Shizunami/静波, a beach resort in Makinohara City/真琴腹市!
Mind you, considering the distance and the destination, it is more than enough!

SN3O0006

The bus of the Shizutetsu Company (based in Shizuoka City, but covering most of central Shizuoka Prefecture!)!

SN3O0007

Riding along Oi River!

SN3O0008

Finally crossing Oi River and riding full south!

SN3O0009

The Oi River, a major river in Japan, needed no less than 650 resident porters during the Edo Era!

SN3O0010

Check the map inside the bus. Drivers will always kindly answer to your enquiries and indicate your stop when needed!

SN3O0011

My first destination and actual terminal for that particular bus: Shizunami Kaigan Iriguchi/静波海岸入口/Entry to Shizunami Beach (860 yen from Shimada City)!

SN3O0012

Checking the bus schedule for my next destination before walking down to the beach!

SN3O0013

I will have to leave from that bus stop sign for my next destination!
Ok! Let’s start walking!

SN3O0017

No need for a guide, just follow the bathers!

SN3O0043

Shinshuu Ootaniha Daishin Kaizan Myoushyouji Temple (真宗大谷派大心海山明照寺)
I had to forget the bathers walking ahead as there too many distractions on the way! LOL

SN3O0020

Quite a few rich residences along the way, too!

SN3O0021

Found my bathers again!

SN3O0022

These gourds seem popular with the local farmers!

SN3O0024

Summer beach camps and parking lots along the way as we get nearer!

SN3O0025

Ubiquitous beach hotel!

SN3O0026

The ocean!

SN3O0027

Lonely mermaid?

SN3O0028

Official entrance to the beach!

SN3O0029

Beach facilities! A bit old to my taste!
This beach is not really a major one in this Prefecture, after all!

SN3O0030

Bathers!

SN3O0031

Young lifeguard!

SN3O0032

Japanese beaches are always heavily monitored, that is only in July and August!

SN3O0033

Taking a dip!

SN3O0034

At low tide the waves are innocuous, although they can be pretty big in other seasons!

SN3O0035

Not many bathers on a weekday in spite of the heat!

SN3O0036

Useful map in four languages!

SN3O0037

If you go to the right along the unguarded part of the beach you will discover many wild oysters!

SN3O0038

Public bathing prohibited there!

SN3O0039

Walking back to the entrance!

SN3O0040

Good-bye, Shizunami!

SN3O0060

back to the bus terminal in Shizunami, I will next leave from this bus stop used by the bus running from Fujieda City/藤枝市 to Sagara/相良, also in Makinonara City/牧之原市!
The destination is Sagara Eigyoujyou/相良営業所!

SN3O0061

One bus every hour!

SN3O0062

Having reached my destination in Sagara I ascertained that I would have to leave from that particular bus stop to take the bus going back into the direction of Fujieda City!

SN3O0063

Of course I checked the timetable!
Plenty of time to visit the place!

SN3O0066

Let’s walk and find the beach first!

SN3O0067

Getting across the main thoroughfare (quite busy, actually!)!

SN3O0068

Turn left for the sun beach!

SN3O0069

This very part of the beach is very dangerous and closed to tourists!

SN3O0074

At last!
Sagara beach is a minor tourist attraction in Shizuoka prefecture, but this is a major fishing area!

SN3O0075

The facilities are a bit old, but the drinks and foos steeply priced!

SN3O0076

A few hardy bathers only!

SN3O0077

Deep sea and treacherous currents beyond the tetrapods!

SN3O0078

Vast beach!

SN3O0079

Pleasant enough sea for the kids!

SN3O0080

Good-bye Sagara Fun Beach!
I decided to have a look at the small town!

SN3O0084

Cheap local makuwa melons and Hime sakura watermelons!

SN3O0085

This area is famous for its vegetables, especially leaf ginger and mini melons (the latter mostly eaten pickled!)!

SN3O0091

Interesting touristic tile signs on the pavement!
Sagara is celebrated for its big kites!

SN3O0087

Unusual in Japan: an antique fire hydrant!
Still in use, apparently!

SN3O0081

Some rich ancient families still live there!

SN3O0095

On my way back from sagara into the direction of Fujieda I changed buses at a stop in front of Makinihara City Police Station to board the bus running back from Shizunami to Shimada City as I wanted to halt o the way in Sumiyoshi/住吉, Yoshida Cho,吉田町 to vist a great Shinto Shrine!

SN3O0112

Kataoka Shrine/片岡神社, dedicated to the Sumiyoshi God/住吉!

SN3O0122

This particular shrine was founded to protect local fishermen!

SN3O0128

At the back you will discover a beautiful wooden kura/Japanese warehouse!

SN3O0136

It is owned by the Oomura Soy sauce Company!

SN3O0150

A beautiful sunset greeted me back in Shimada City!

See you on the next trip!

Kura: Traditional Japanese Warehouse in Shizuoka Prefecture 21: Oomura Soy Sauce Company Kura in Yoshida Cho!

“Kura” (in Japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditional Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

SN3O0129

The other as I was preparing to back to Shimada City from Sumiyoshi in Yoshida Cho, I noticed this beautiful wooden kura on the right of the Kataoka Sumiyoshi Shinto Shrine!

SN3O0134

the place was obviously in full use.
I decided to investigate!

SN3O0135

Oomuraya Soy sauce Company!

SN3O0130

I have interviewed soy sauce companies before but I couldn’t smell the typical flavors of soy sauce making in the air!

SN3O0136

That is when I met an employee who gracefully explained that the Company uses these premises as their business base, office and storeroom!

SN3O0138

The factory has been away!

SN3O0137

The same employee offered me to interview the owner who happened to be on the premises but I had to take my bus!

Kura: Traditional Japanese Warehouse in Shizuoka Prefecture 20: Former Suzuki Honkei Sake Brewery Kura in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

“Kura” (in Japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.

SN3O0050

Before it was merged with Shimizu Brewery into the present Sanwa Brewery in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, Suzuki Honkei was active producing Japanese sake in Jirochou, Shimizu City before another kind of merger put the three of them into Shizuoka City!

SN3O0054

The Suzuki Family still lives there as was confirmed by the locals when I asked them during the Shimizu Harbor Festival!

SN3O0049

SN3O0051

The kura standing beside the main house is still in beautiful repair!

SN3O0052

Whatever angle you look at it from, it is really impressive!

SN3O0053

I wish they would still brew sake as I would visit it every day!
