Rural Japan and farming in Ooka, Shimada City!

The other day I found myself with some time on hand in Shimada City and took advantage of it to visit a rural area I hadn’t visited yet, namely Ooka/相賀, deep in rural land at the foot of the mountains north of the city.

One can board a bus (every hour only) leaving from Shimada Station North Exit next to the Tourist Information Bureau going for for Ooka. It also serves as a community bus and therefore is very cheap. Only 200 yen!

La Table du Boucher is fast becoming another hot spot in Takajyo Machi, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, an area already replete with many good establishments.
It serves French bistro-style dishes with an Italian note at times and it has the merit to double as a wine bar!
I visited it the other day for the third time to check on more of its menu!

Unfiltered
Alcohol: 5.5 %
Clarity: slightly smoky (normal considering live yeast and being unfiltered), very clean

Bubbles: Long head. Very fine bubbles. Creamy. Light brown
Aroma: refreshing and fruity. Bread, citruses. Very pleasant aroma
Taste: very deep, fruity, and refreshing attack.
lingers long enough on palate for true tasting before departing on a drier and somewhat acid note.
Oranges, persimmon, bread, roasted oats.
Solid. Stays faithful to first impressions all the way through.
Dry coffee beans will appear if drunk with food.

Overall: A beer for adult true craft beer lovers!
Refreshing, satisfying, a bit tarty, but really fulfilling.

First of all, apart from a beefed-up food menu they now offer a very reasonable lunch for Monday to Friday!

AOI BEER STAND owned by Aoi Brewery in Miyuki Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, has the merit to offer on tap other craft beers from Shizuoka Prefecture and the rest of Japan, but you do have to hurry as they usually served only one keg before switching to another brew!

This time, the guest craft beer had been brewed by North Island Brewery in Ebetsu City, Hokkaido: Marzen!

Barley, barley malt, hop, live yeast. long fermentation
Unfiltered
Alcohol: 5 %
Bubbles: long head. Fine bubbles, creamy, white
Clarity: only slightly smoky (normal considering live yeast and being unfiltered), very clean
Color: deep orange/persimmon
Aroma: Fruity, dry oranges, citruses
Taste: Dry and fruity attack. Very refreshing.
Lingers on palate long enough for true tasting before leaving with some welcome acidity.
Bread, hints of apricot.
varies little with food.

Overall: very satisfying, solid and reliable craft beer.
Although called “Marzen” for “March” in German, definitely a craft beer for all seasons!

Time and again I have said that vegans and vegetarians would probably have their happiest times in Japan, at least for gastronomes, because this country, and especially Shizuoka with its mild weather and abundance of vegetables all year round, can provide all ingredients all year round whose traceability is easy to prove!

The above o-tooshi/お通し/is not vegetarian, but you aforementioned priorities will ensure it is!

There are many places in Shizuoka City and Prefecture offering alternatives to their omnivorous dishes for vegans and vegetarians who still want to enjoy their outing with friends with different priorities.
One such place, and arguably the best at it, is Yasaitei in Tokiwa Cho, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!
