Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 4

SN3O5530

Fire Department water hydrant manhole cover in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

I already know of many blogging friends in Japan taking pictures of manhole covers all over this country.
The reason is simple enough: as there is little chance of them being stolen (I can’t say the same thing back in our countries!) the local/municipal government often use them as touristic advertisements !

I keep on looking for them during my many travels through the Prefecture.
I must admit this time I have become a bit “technical” but I supposed it is needed!

SN3O5533

Another municipal (probably electricity) manhole cover blended wit its pavement surroundings!

SN3O5040

i discovered this slightly surprising one in Kikugawa City belonging to the big private National Electric Company!
It states that it can bear up to 250 kg from human pedestrians!
I’ll have to call a sumo wrestler to check that!

SN3O5041

I found this one bearing another foundry name inside Kikugawa JR Station!

SN3O5042

Kojima Seisakusho Co!

SN3O5051

A new pattern found in Okitsu, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5052

An old surviving pattern and shape used when Shimizu Ku was still Shimizu City!

SN3O5166

Another foundry Company found in Okitsu, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5167

Kaneso Company!

SN3O5531

SN3O5170

A different and ancient pattern I discovered near my home in Aoi ku, Shiuoka City!

SN3O5171

I also found this one near my g\home with still another company name!
It seems there is a lot of competition for making them!

SN3O5172

Osaka Drainage Industries Co. Ltd!
Now that comes from far away!

SN3O5173

Interesting seal!

SN3O5174

These day new manhole covers tend to become more inconspicuous as the city have them blended into the pavements patterns such as this one above and the three following I found lining up along renovated Komagata Street in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5175

“Double-door” manhole cover from Chubu Electrics Company!

SN3O5176

NTT/National Telephone & Telegraph cables!

SN3O5177

Another one from Chubu Electrics Company!

Wall Paintings in Okitsu, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5151

I was walking back from Seikenji Temple (report coming!) to Okitsu JR Station when I felt the pangs of hunger.
As most restaurants were closed for lunch on that day in this neighborhood I decide to see what a local supermarket had to offer when I espied a wall painting in the distance!
I couldn’t investigate it as I don’t know when I will be able to come back to Okitsu!

SN3O5153

It had been painted quite a while ago but I suspect that the government is Shimizu Ku is behind it and probably had it done before they were merged into Shizuoka City!

SN3O5154

Just before the “Map” Mount Fuji and various fish had been painted.
I’ll show you later why Mount Fuji was so prominent!
As for the fish Shimizu is a major fishing harbor (it also has a major industrial harbor!)!

SN3O5156

I carefully checked and the fish represented there are really fish caught offshore!

SN3O5157

Right half of the picture:
Interestingly enough most of the fish are solitary!
Can you recognize them: True Seabream, File Fish, Puff Fish/Globe Fish, Scabbard Fish, Grouper, etc.

SN3O5158

Left half of the picture:
Here the fish are mostly in pairs!
Can you recognize them: Grey Seabream, True Seabream, Horse mackerel, etc.

SN3O5159

Crabs!
We do have quite a few in the Suruga Bay, and some very rare!

SN3O5155

The Map!

SN3O5160

The right half also featuring local products, such as citruses and tea!

SN3O5161

The Okitsu River is famous for its wild Ayu trouts!

SN3O5162

The right half with plenty of oranges!

SN3O5152

Can you see it?

SN3O5163

Mount Fuji beyond the supermarket!

Tip of Mount Fuji at Okitsu Station, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5164

This is a season to keep your eyes well open as the cold and crisp air helps with photography when the sky is cloudless!

SN3O5165

mount has a knack to turn out in some interesting places!
I caught it from Platform 1 (you can’t from the others!) at Okitsu Station in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!
I’m sure to come with more as I often take the train across the Prefecture!

Traces of The Past….. (Shizuoka City, Japan)

SN3O5019

Japan is a continual contradiction. Or a dichotomy?
If you just keep looking out enough you will find an incredible amount of themes for photography in a country both so hit-tech and still so analog in all fields!
I was cycling (a good method to find “sites”) in Ryogae Cho and Shichiken Cho in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City when my eyes stopped on this big building that no one thought of cleaning a long time after an adjacent buiding had been pulled down to leave place for a car-park!

SN3O5020

The traces left by the defunct building are so vivid that the facade seems to wear its own ghost of the past…
At night nobody woule notice but it really uncanny in the morning by a bright late fall day!

SN3O5021

A zombie house?
Maybe.
Natural art?
Definitely!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 3

SN3O5503

Manhole covers do not have to be round but can come as square, rectangular and even “double-doored! as this one above!

I already know of many blogging friends in Japan taking pictures of manhole covers all over this country.
The reason is simple enough: as there is little chance of them being stolen (I can’t say the same thing back in our countries!) the local/municipal government often use them as touristic advertisements !

I continued looking around Aoi Ku and Shimizu Ku in Shizuoka City and in other cities.
As I’m sure there are quite a few around there should quite a few more articles about the subject in the offing!
I might even close this series with another “Ten Best”!

This time I concentrated in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, which allowed me to go a bit more technical all about it!

SN3O5526

Another large rectangular manhole belonging to NTT/Nihon Telephone & Telegraph Company!

SN3O5524

The log/arms/”mon” in the middle of this water duct/outlet manhole cover is actually the real seal of a Japanese family!

SN3O5525

Haisui/排水 means “drainage”. In that case, access to ducts and pipes taking care of excess or rain water!

SN3O5527

A large circular manhole owned by the Chubu Denryoku/Shizuoka Central Electric Power Company with their logo in the middle!

Railway Stations in Shizuoka Prefecture 1: Shuzenji in Izu Peninsula!

The only real Wasabi Shochu in the whole world by Bandai Brewery in Shuzenji!

If you wish to visit the Izu Peninsula, especially away from the beaten tracks, Shuzenji Station should be your starting point!
Wherever you come from in Japan or Shizuoka Prefecture, first go Mishima City and change trains from the JR Railway Line to the Private Izu Hakone Senzu Line which will take you all the way to Shizenji, its final destination.
Shuzenji is a, if not the, major hubub in Izu Peninsula whose hot springs have been famed for unknown centuries.

Shuzenji Hot Springs sign in front of the station.

But when it comes to discover and buy local products for really original gifts and souvenirs, Shuzenji Station is the best place as it provides for all in small enough space to enjoy browsing!
Let me take you on a quick tour!

Shuzenji Station seen from the outside.

What’s that small food booth by the entrance?

Local ekiben/railway bentos, 7 of them! A must for your meal on your way back!

There are two entries to the shop. Pick yours!

But you are already hungry?
No problem, there is a hot food stand inside the souvenir shop!
Once you feel revived, we can start shopping!

Izu Peninsula is by definition is surrounded by the sea. Now, how about some nori/dry seaweed seasoned with wasabi? Incidentally, Shizuoka Prefecture produces no less than 80% of the whole Japanese wasabi crop!

The shop is full of artifacts to remind you this is wasabi land! (actually the second land in Shizuoka Prefecture, as wasabi was first grown in Utougi/有東木 in Shizuoka City!)

When it comes to wasabi related processed products, it is just an embarrassment of choices!

Now, something for the vegans and vegetarians, Kuromai Daifuku/Black Rice Buns/黒米大福, Soba Daifuku/そば大福, Mame daifuku/Soy Beans Buns/豆大福 and more!

Jam Sticks made with fruit cultivated in Izu Peninsula whose fruit is another major product!

For vegans and vegetarians again: Kuromai Udon/黒米うどん/Black Rice Udon, and Shizenjyou Soba/自然薯/Wild Yam Soba!

More wasabi-related processed products!

Japanese sake line-up (of the more reasonable prices) from Bandai Brewery, the only sake brewery in Shuzenji and Izu peninsula!

Forget the bottle on the left… the bottles in the center are shochu from local rice by Fujinishiki Brewery (located nesr Mount Fuji), a white loquat wine bottle by Bandai Brewery and some fiey shochu by the same!

The only real Wasabi Shochu in the whole world by Bandai Brewery in Shuzenji!

Real wines by the Naka Izu Winery, the only wine-producing compabny in Shizuoka Prefecture!

Again, more wasabi-related processed products!

This is only a small round-up, and I’m sure you will find more to your liking!
