Shizuoka Sake Tasting: Sanwa Brewery-Hagoromo no Mai Junmai Ginjyo

Sanwa Brewery in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, has been producing this particular brand for quite a long time!

SN3O0293

It commemorates an old legend in Shimizu Ku, Hagoromo or Hagoromo no Mai, The Dance of the Sky Spirit Veil!

SN3O0296

Mentioning “Junmai Ginjyo” on a cap is a bit unusual in Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0292

Even for a 300 ml bottle a Junmai Ginjyo is not that cheap!

SN3O0294

Rice milled down to 60%
Dryness: + 5
Alcohol: 15.5 degrees
Bottled in March 2014

Clarity: Very clear
Color: Faint golden hue
Aroma: Assertive. Banana, pineapple, nuts
Body: Fluid, slightly sirupy
Taste: Dry and fruity attack back up by puissant junmai petiillant.
Complex.Milk coffee, nuts, almonds, oranges with hints of dark chocolate
Disappears fairly quickly with strong hints of banana and nuts.
Very easy to drink in spite of its dryness.
Takes a lighter turn with food with stronger hints of milk coffee and later of bananas.
Even chilled shows many facets.

Overall: A very dry and fruity delicious sake one may enjoy chilled or at room temperature on its own or with food.
Very eclectic in the sense that you can choose the occasion to savor it!
Mind you, I would drink it on my own with some beautiful finger food!

Wild Boar Croquettes at Kiyozawa no Sato Road Station in Shizuoka City!

Yesterday I was cycling along the Warashina River at already quite some altitude in search of Aihama Shirahige Shrine when I reached a place called Kiyozawa No Sato Road Station.
Sato means village, hometown, etc. and Kiyozawa is the name of the area.
Road Stations is a Japanese concept meaning local shops basically serving and selling products!

SN3O0401

Cute sign!

SN3O0383

The Station/eki/駅!

SN3O0400

local (top class!) Honyama green tea!

SN3O0386

Local vegetables!

SN3O0387

I asked local ladies/farmers busy preparing vegetables (on a Sunday!) if I was on the right way.
They kindly answered me that I was on the right way (they forgot to mention it was from near!).

SN3O0384

I was about to take my when I noticed that flag sign!

SN3O0385

Wild boar croquettes!
I was tired and hungry!
I didn’t hesitate! I pulled the bicycle on the side and entered the place!

SN3O0395

It might be a small diner but they are quite famous as they are recognized by the Shizuoka Prefecture Government!

SN3O0396

All kinds of customers from local kids to tourists and real cyclists kept coming in!

SN3O0397

Local potter!

SN3O0388

Local Japanese cakes filled with sweetmeats!

SN3O0389

The wild boar croquettes! Still hot and only a couple of packages left!
You can eat them on site and the lady in charge even prepared my green tea!

SN3O0390

the local wild boar are a real nuisance and some of them end up in these croquettes! Purely local!

SN3O0391

Really appetizing!

SN3O0393

Crunchy outside and soft inside!

SN3O0394

Not only yummy but very healthy with local vegetables!

SN3O0398

There was another remarkable product on sale!

SN3O0399

Wild boar curry!
Incredible souvenir to take back home!

Aihama Shirahige Shrine (相俣白髭神社)-Thunder Stone (雷石) in Aihama, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

Yesterday I decided to cycle along a rout I hadn’t done for almost three years: Warashina River in Aoi ku, Shzuoka City!

SN3O0375

I hadn’t found much of interest (I did on the way back, though!) until I reached Warabiko Rest Area which also includes a public bath.

SN3O0376

Apart of some very useful amenities they also had a map of the area!

SN3O0377

I noticed the name of a Shinto Shrine called Aihama Shirahige Jinjya/”Aihama” stands for the area, “Shirahige/White Beard is a very common name for shrines and “jinjya” for shrine.
They also mentioned the Thunder Stone/Kaminari Ishi/雷石. It looked pretty impressive on the map.
later i had to come to the conclusion of not trusting such maps too much when it came to size and importance! LOL

SN3O0425

It didn’t look that far on the map but it took me a good one hour uphill to find it.
On the way I stopped at the Kiyosawa street Station to eat some succulent local wild boar croquettes where ladies were kind to tell me to just go straight ahead!
I cycled and cycled until I knew I must passed it.
I stopped to ask some local farmers as there are quite many around cultivating rice and a famous brand of green tea called “Honyama”!.
It took me time to explain rightly what I was looking for and found out I had just passed it!

SN3O0406

Well, I challenge anyone, Japanese included to find that minuscule sign!
Lucky I was on a bicycle!

SN3O0407

The sign, for its small size, was brand new so the shrine must have found some recognition of late.
I asked a few people people on the way back but nobody could tell me how old it was.
The fact there many shrine called “white beard” in the area didn’t help!

SN3O0408

The stairs leading to the shrine were old, narrow and barely in repair!

SN3O0409

Judging from the vegetation it must cleared only once a year for a local yearly matsuri/festival!

SN3O0410

I finally reach the small torii/sacred bird gate that stands at the entrance of any shinto shrine!

SN3O0412

Past the the torii I found two old stone lanterns with a moon and sun carved openings.

SN3O0418

The pines trees on the steep slope looked very ancient indeed!

SN3O0411

The shrine!
Big enough it was unfortunately completely locked up and even the coin offerings box seemed locked, too!
I might have been the first real visitor in a long time, although the wooden cover over the water stone basin was brand new!

SN3O0413

I haven’t seen that design before although it looks like a pointed beard!

SN3O0415

The Thunder Stone!
I did look all around the shrine to ascertain it was the real thing atop a kind of stone cairn!

SN3O0417

Truth to tell it might be a lot smaller than I was made to believe but it was very unusual!

SN3O0419

The stone looked natural enough to me as I didn’t see nay obvious signs of carving on it.
The color was unusual and I could find any stone of the same color!

SN3O0420

I entertain the notion that someone a long time ago brought it there as an offering.
The small metal torii gate was added a lot later!

SN3O0421

I didn’t feel disappointed at the small size of the Thunder Stone as there was plenty of interesting pictures to be taken on my way out!

SN3O0422

The stone lanterns were really ancient!

SN3O0423

The original hand washing stone basin?

SN3O0414

A paved way out of history!

Plane, but not a “Zero”, along the Warashina Riwer, Shizuoka City, Aoi Ku, Tomizawa!

Cycling gives you the great advantage to be able to stop anywhere and take photographs for posterity!

SN3O0379

Yesterday i was cycling along the Warashina River in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City when I found (for the second time actually. I had seen it there too many years ago) when Ifound this plane perched in front of a gasoline station in Tomizawa!

SN3O0380

The owner had obviously tried to redecorate it to make it look like a “zero sen”, the famous WWII Japanese fighting plane!

SN3O0381

The cockpit may make you think so, but the landing gear is far too modern!

SN3O0382

At the very least it has become a useful landmark!

The Sign of the Sake Brewery that disappeared “Warausenryo” by Katsuyama Brewery in Shizuoka City!

I was cycling yesterday along the River Warashina in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, when I espied a sake ensign above me!

SN3O0404

It has attracted my eyes because I knew the name of the skae brand: “”Warausenryou/笑千両/The laughng 1,000 Ryou”!
Ryou was a very high currency denomination or gold coin in old Japan!

SN3O0405

it was fixed on the roof of a liquor shop called Mori Saketen, which seemed really old last in Kiyozawa area up in the mountains but was still on business!

SN3O0403

“Warausenryou” used to be the main sake brand of Katsuyama brewery in Shizuoka City which definitely closed in 1994!
True sake history!

The Legend of Hagoromo in Miho Beach Pine Forest, Shimizu Ku, Shziuoka City!

The Peninsula of Miho and the Beach of Matsubara have become a World Cultural Heritage in the company of Mount Fuji in recent times.
And the very Matsubara beach with all its pine trees as it name indicates is the home of a very ancient and famous legend all over Japan: The Legend of Hagoromo!

SN3O0297

If you are not one of the visitors coming in one local bus or a crowded tourist coach take the time to enter the forest past the big shinto torii gate and walk along a wooden path!

SN3O0298

The monument marking the entrance of the “Path of the Gods”!

SN3O0299

Take your time and take a rest if need be!

SN3O0300

The whole path is lined with venerable pine trees!

SN3O0301

The place and its legend was already mentioned in the “Wagasode Journal” written in 1899!

SN3O0302

Naturally the Legend of Hagoromo is also explained on the same type of traditional Japanese announcement board but I will be able to explain in detail with pictures soon!

SN3O0303

An incredibly shaped pine tree!

SN3O0304

The Legend of Hagoromo 1
“Hagoromo/羽衣” means veil or garment.
One day a local firsherman discovered a veil hanging on a low branch of a pine tree.

SN3O0305

The Legend of Hagoromo 2
Just as the fisherman was going awa with the evil a lady deity appeared and told him it was her veil and to give it back to her.

SN3O0306

The Legend of Hagoromo 3
The fisherman asked for a dance in exchange for her treasure without which she wouldn’t be able to go back to heaven.

SN3O0307

The Legend of Hagoromo 4
Playing on her lute she performed the dance of the Moon.

SN3O0308

The Legend of Hagoromo %

But after the fisherman returned her veil she disappeared in the sky!

SN3O0310

You will find a Hagoromo Hotel by the entrance of the pine Forest!

SN3O0311

Naturally the hotel has a statue commemorating the legend!

SN3O0312

There are also bilingual boards at the entrance of the pine forest!

SN3O0313

SN3O0313

Every year a Traditional Noh Theater play is performed inside the forest to relate the legend of the Celesial maiden and her veil.

SN3O0314

Very good English explanations!

SN3O0315

The legend says that the pine tree is 650 years old!

SN3O0316

the very tree and its low branch!

SN3O0317

More information but only in Japanese!

SN3O0318

The Matsubara Pine Tree Forest!

SN3O0319

The Noh play takes place there!

SN3O0320

Don’t worry, there are plenty of shops for food and refreshements and facilities!

SN3O0321

Visitors come from all over Japan!

SN3O0323

The forest has it own minuscule shrine called “Haguruma”!

SN3O0325

Many people of course visit the beach!

HAGOROMO-28

The Suruga Bay!

SN3O0324

During the colder part of the year you can enjoy an incredible view of Mount Fuji, but that will be a report later in the year!

SN3O0327

But it is still too early for the bathing season!

SN3O0328

but of course you may play on the beach as much as you want!

Seorido Shrine in Miho, Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City!

When it comes to Shinto Shrines Shizuoka Prefecture is big enough and has enough history to provide visitors with discoveries. Shinto Shrines are never that big here, except for a very few, but they are many, and unfortunately most are forgotten, but the more mysterious for it.
I’m not a religious man, but I love architecture, art and history, and the discovery of the smallest detail can be more fulfilling than visiting grandiose but crowded monuments in world famous touristic spots!

SN3O0253

The other day cycling along a road parallel to the Miho Beach in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, I discovered this shrine out of the blue.
Built no less than 1200 years ago, it goes under the ame of Seorido Shrine/瀬織戸神社.
Also called Bentensama/辨天様, it is dedicated to the Shinto Godess Seoritsuhime/瀬織津姫 and is devoted to the welfare of fishermen among others.

SN3O0254

Like any shinto shrine the access paved lane climbs up the small hill under a torii gate.

SN3O0255

Although the paved land around it of origin it must have built all over again many times!

SN3O0256

The main shrine building!

SN3O0257

Looking at the back locals still take good care of it!

SN3O0258

It is always a good idea to look at the eaves of such buildings as they reveal old parts!

SN3O0259

You realize that the whole place is built of bits and pieces from different eras!

SN3O0260

My eyes felt attracted to this very small shrine, some parts f which are definitely of another era!

SN3O0261

“See no evil, hear no evil, say no evil!”

SN3O0262

I carefully replaced the offered rice crackers after photographing!

SN3O0263

On old lady must have left this 1 yen coin as an offering!

SN3O0264

Blazing Sunset Before The First Drink in Shizuoka City!

With the rainy season around the corner evening skies are more cloudy than usual and it results into some spectacular sunsets!

SN3O0196

The Shichiken Cho area in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City is a very interesting location to take pictures of urban sunsets thanks to some retro decorations existing along the streets!

SN3O0208

Even simple high rise buildings contribute to a special atmosphere!

SN3O0207

My favorite picture just before entering a hidden lair for the first drink of the evening!

Wall Painting: Food & Tourism on Water Tank in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

The other day I was cycling along a street parallel to the Miho Beach in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, when I espied this unusual water tank!

SN3O0243

It stood practically in the middle of a small farm!
Interesting way to advertise Shimizu Ku.
Actually the area is quite remarkable for quite a few similar sights!

SN3O0244

I knew that Shimizu was noted for its strawberries and oranges, but I didn’t know about roses!

SN3O0245

Cucumbers and the local JA?Japan Agriculture Office, which is probably advertising itself!

SN3O0246

Tomatoes and edamame!
The very farm it stood by grew edamame!

SN3O0247

The well-maintained stairway is proof enough that it is still used for ts original purpose!

Weird Japan (46): Rabbit Road Guard Rails!

Japan is a safe country to the point of decorating part-time road guard rails when proceeding with works on their roads!

SN3O0332

Yes, rabbits!
One way to keep the kids off dangerous roads!
And it is one example!
I’ve already seen blue ducks and blue and white Mount Fuji!
