Public Foot Bath Hot Spring in Yaizu City!

When you get from Yaizu JR Station take the South exit and walk down the stairs and turnleft at the bottom.
On your right you will discover a big marlin jumping out of a fountain!

The locals know and use this place extensively as shown by those junior high school taking dip in a cold afternoon yesterday!

This is true hot spring water pumped from a big public hot spring bath center just a few minutes away!
As for the volcanic stones under the marlin they were brought all the way from Mount Fuji!

The foot bath is looked after the Kuroshio Onsen/Black Tide Hot Spring Company.
Actually it was completely cleaned and revamped last year!

I have always been wondering at the wisdom of creating a honjonzo.
After all it is certainly more difficult than making a straight junami as you have to blend the aforementioned junmai with pure sake alcohol.
In fact many a brew master has agreed it is a lot of work for making a sake sold at a lower price…
Mind you I do not complain, especially considering the extravagant rice millage practiced by Shizdaizumi Brewery in Fujieda City!

Rice milled down to 55%
Alcohol: 16 degrees
Yeast: Shizuoka NEW-5
Dryness: + 6.0
Acidity: 1.1
Bott;ed in November 2013

Clarity: very clear
Color: Faint golden hue
Aroma: Discreet, elegant, fruity. Coffee beans, vanilla
Body: fluid
Taste: Soft, dry. elegant attack with strong coffee beans and dry dark chocolate.
Complex. Pleasant alcohol. Disappears quickly with hints of dry nuts.
Take an even drier turn with food.

Overall: An intriguing and elegant sake.
Eminently enjoyable on its own although obviously conceived to accompany food.
I actually made a point to drink it with dates and sweet biscuits and discovered that its accentuated dryness beautifully married with the sweetness of the cakes!
It just proves you ind you I could drink that particular brew all night long!ought to drink any sake in many combinations as far as food is concerned.

Okabe, now merged with Fujieda City used to be the 21st Station along the Old Tokaido Route, actually the most used one of four that existed at the time as it mainly followed the coast between Nihonbashi in Edo/Tokyo to Keishi/Kyoto

Inns were vital for the well-being of travelers of the time, generally of so-called middle class, especially merchants, and such a one can still be found just near the “Okabeshuku Kashibaya Mae” bus stop.
As for reaching it, one cheap way is to take a bus either from Shizuoka City JR Station North Exit or Fujieda City JR North Exit!

Before entering the actual premises visitors/travelers would first sit in the mise/welcome space where they would introduced to the inn and tier lodgings and fees.

Like in Japanese traditional inns nowadays, board included dinner and breakfast and were not that cheap. Customers were mainly of the lower to higher middle cass, including merchants and samurais and their retinue.

The present inn was rebuilt in 1836 and had to be again after two fires struck the whole of Okabe.

Traditional Japanese Houses and Inns in Utsunoya, Shizuoka City!

Utsunoya was an intermediary stage between the two Old Tokaido Route stations, Mariko in Shizuoka City, and Okabe in Fujieda City.
Even during the Meiji Era travelers had to go through it before climbing up and down steep slopes between the two stations.
Accordingly many visitors stopped overnight in one of the “Shuukuba or Kashiya/inns.
Such establishments can be seen for the sole pleasure of the eyes learning the history of the region.

The access is now very easy!
Just take a bus to Fujieda City from platform 7 in front Shizuoka Jr Station and get off at Utsunoya Iriguchi bus stop just before the Fujieda Tunnel.
Cross the large road by using the overhead bridge and start walking up the street!

The first houses you will meet are not the inns of Utsunoya but they will prepare you to the further sights!

These houses have been for a long time and often repaired but you can catch glimpses of old wooden architecture!

Shizuoka Ekiben/Railway Station Bento: Hamamatsu Mikkabi Beef in Kakegawa JR Railway Station!

Mikabi in Hamamatsu City is not only famous all over Japan for its oranges but also for its beef!
Yesterday I had to stop in Kakegawa City and had a look at the ekiben/railway station bento they had on on offer when I discovered this new one among he more than half-dozen displayed.
I didn’t hesitate!

Kura: Japanese Traditional Warehouses in Shizuoka Prefecture 9

Kura in Kashibaya Inn, Okabe, Fujieda City!

“Kura” (in Japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditional Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

During my trip last week in Okabe, Fujieda City and Utsunoya, Shizuoka City, I noticed this small kura along the way to Utusunoya at a bend of the road with no more houses and under the shade of the mountain.

It had been converted into a no-limit shelter for the Utsunoya water pomp!

The original location is not fortuitous as it stands in the shade all day long!

It is still relatively new but the concept is traditional!

When I visited the Great Inn Kashibaya in Okabe, Fujieda City, I noticed two big kuras in perfect state behind the Inn!

Actually the two big kuras belonged to a man called Ryoukichi who owned the Inn and also operated a pawn shop in the two kuras!

They were built in 1836.
Although the Inn burnt down twice, the kuras survived all that time!

Both of them now house a museum and gallery!

Shizuoka Prefecture being located between Tokyo and Nagoya had always been crossed by very busy routes forcing the Meiji Government to dig out many tunnels for faster and easier access and transport.
The Meiji Tunnel in Utsunoya, Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City is not only one of them but had the distinction to be first toll tunnel in Japan!

One easy way to visit this piece of engineering history is to take a bus bound to Fujieda from Shizuoka JR Station North exit platform N0′ and to get off at Utusnoya bus stop just before the Fujieda Tunnel. Cross the road to the right hand side and walk along the well paved street. Walk across Utsunoya and turn left when you find the sign above!

You will also find this wooden sign board indicating the Old Tokaido Route/Track through the mountains.

Of course you can walk/climb along the old route through mountains, passes and forests but you will nee a backpack!

Take your time as it is not a long way away and depending on the seasons there are plenty of pictures to take of the environment!

You will discover that for many reasons there are more than one tunnel in the area!
On the map above the Meiji Tunnel is the second one from the bottom in yellow.
The second tunnel was dug out in the Tasho Era, the one at the very bottom.
A third tunnel was dug during the Showa Era, the third from the bottom.
The latest tunnel was dug out in the Heisei Era, The fourth from the bottom.
The last two are very busy thoroughfares.

There is small space before the entry of the tunnel equipped with a public washroom, but also with a great relief map!
Take the time to check it and realize the scope of the work invovled in digging out these tunnels!

You will notice that only pedestrians (and cyclists?) are allowed through these days!

It is the oldest toll tunnel in Japan! According to the records, it was first opened as a wooden tunnel in 1876. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed it in 1896. It was reopened in 1904 as a brick tunnel!

Winter is the season for strong genshu sake and Takashima Brewery in Numazu City is certainly no exception!
At least they keep the names short there! LOL

Yeast: Shizuoka Yeast NEW-5
Alcohol: 17 degrees
Dryness: + 5
Acidity: 1.6
Bottled in Decmebr 2013

Clarity: Very clear
Color: Golden hue
Aroma: Dry, fruity. Pears, custard, alcohol
Body: Fluid
Taste: Very fruity attack backed up with junmai petillant
Easy to drink in spite of high alcohol contents.
Complex: dry custard, chestnuts.
Disappears fairly quickly.
Changes little with food but for a deeper alcohol impression and appearance of oranges.
Sweetness/dryness tends to fluctuate inside the palate.

Overall: Very intriguing junmai genshu.
Superbly marries with food, especially izakaya heavy fare and oden.
Very pleasant to drink in spite of high alcohol contents.
Another solid and so reliable sake so typical of Takashima Brewery’s savoir-faire!

Shinshu: New aske of the season
Shiboritate: Just pressed
Muroka: Unfiltered
Nama: Unpasteurized
Genshu: No pure water added

Bottled in November 2013

Clarity: Very clear
Color: Light golden hue
Aroma: Assertive. Dry and fruity. Pineapple, vanilla
Body: Fluid, slightly sirupy
Taste: Dry and fruity attack backed up with moderate junmai petillant and pleasant alcohol.
Elegant in spite of high alcohol content.
Complex: cherries, oranges, persimmons.
Disappears fairly quickly.
Changes little with food.
Actually marries superbly with heavy izakaya fare.

Overall: A solid sake for heavy food in cold winters!
Very elegant in spite of the “rough image” of a nama genshu!
Another sure value for strong sake lovers!

We are proud, for the ninth consecutive year, to announce the release of a most special winter-warmer ale: Ganko Oyaji Barley Wine.

*Ganko Oyaji Barley Wine 2014 (ABV 10%):

The first batch of Ganko Oyaji Barley Wine was brewed back in Summer 2004 and released in February 2005. We have repeated this ‘brew-it-in-summer-for-release-next-winter’ schedule for Ganko Oyaji every year as it allows ample time for post-packaged secondary fermentation and flavor maturation — critical to beers of extremely high original gravity and alcohol strength.

Ganko Oyaji 2014 is brewed with an all-English malt bill that includes floor-malted Marris Otter, Rye, Amber and a touch of Roast Barley. A Kettle addition of Japanese red cane (akato) sugar contributes extra food for yeast fermentation without adding more in the way of body and sweetness — there is plenty of both of those in this high original gravity ale (23.9 Plato). The malt sweetness is balanced beautifully by generous additions (90 calculated IBUs) of five American-grown hop varieties: Millenium, Nugget, Sorachi Ace, Chinook and Simcoe. As always, we krausen (blending of a portion of peak fermentation beer into the beer destined for packaging) at packaging to produce a robust secondary fermentation and totally natural carbonation.

Ganko Oyaji is an ideal after-dinner or before-bed restorative. It promises to condition nicely for months and years to come. It is available for immediate shipment (bottles and kegs) to Baird Beer retailers throughout Japan. It begins pouring from the taps of Baird Taproom pubs on Saturday, February 1.

The “Oni Koroshi/Kill a Goblin” made by Oomuraya Brewery in Shimada City is probably the most famous Oni Koroshi in Japan and actually was the main brand sake of the same brewery.

It is a very dry sake originally aimed at male drinkers but times have certainly changed and everyone is enjoying it!

Aroma: Assertive. Dry. Nutty.

Body: Fluid
Taste: Very dry attack backed with pleasant alcohol.
Fruity: Apples, cherries
Alcohol not as strong as expected.
Lingers only for a while warming up the back of the palate.
Changes little with food but for a mellower turn backed with stronger alcohol.
Turns mellow with soft nuts once away from food.
As a nurukan/lukewarm shows drier but fruity facets. Turns then very dry but pleasant.

Overall: A sake for all seasons, especially with food. Can be enjoyed any temperature.
Another sake to bring at a BBQ or a raucous party!

Whereas some cities in Shizuoka Prefecture like Shizuoka, Hamamatsu or Yaizu do try to create a non-smoking environment on their street pavements, the City of Fujieda is only reminding smokers to litter the streets with their fag ends/cigarette butts…..

Mind you, the signs are everywhere, especially around the JR Station.
Prohibiting littering the pavements is good but at the same time such a warning tends to comfort smokers into their habits………………
