Weird Japan (45): Lost Umbrellas at Odawara JR Station!

Today I managed to take the wrong train back home in Shizuoka City from Mishima City and found myself marooned in Odawara Station waiting for the next Shinkansen train back home!

SN3O0122

There is very little you can do on a Shinkasen track platfrom in Japan.
Just on a hunch I looked outside through th large bay window and noticed women employees taking out garbage, used cans in particular!

SN3O0120

On the left of the picture you can see some cans offloaded from trains. I can’t imagine how many are taken out on week days.
But on the right I discovered something unusual!

SN3O0121

Lost umbrellas on trains!
Now, what are they going to do with them? LOL

Shizuoka Sake Tasting: Fuji-Takasago Brewery- Yamahai Junmai Ginjo

Shizuoka is definitely acquiring deserved recognition for its general approach towards Yamahai sake to the point that “Shizuoka Yamahai” is steadily becoming a byword!

SN3O0074

Fuji-Takasago Brewery in Fujinomiya City has also been experimenting in Yamahai for quite some and is pretty happy about some remarkable results!

SN3O0075

Rice: Yamada Nishiki
Rice milled down to 55%
Alcohol: 16 degrees
Dryness: -3
Bottled in February 2014

Clarity: Very clear
Color: Very faint golden hue
Aroma: Assertive. Sweetish. Fruity. Apples, pears, custard.
Body: Fluid
Taste: Very fruity and powerful attack backed up with puissant junmai petillant.
Complex.
Oranges, persimmons, apricots.
Lingers for a short while warming up the back of the palate with more oranges.
Varies very little with food.
Not as sweet as expected although a -3 dryness is very sweet by Shizuoka standards.
Very elegant, fruity and complex for a yamahai.
Stays fruity all the time.

Overall: Its comparatively marked sweetness backed up with a very fruity approach makes it a great sake to drink as an aperitif on its own although it does happily enhances food.
A great sake to combine with cheese or chocolate!
For all its “rough concept/reputation”, this kind of yamahai is a sake that will greatly please ladies in general!

Robert Yellin’s Neswletter: Ceramics of Japan Tour with Esprit Travel

Greetings from Kyoto,

Spring is in the air here and at last the long winter is winding down; I hope this finds you well and looking forward to spring flowers and dreams; in Kyoto those are easily found.

Kako-kodai

Ceramics of Japan Tour with Esprit Travel
I’m pleased to announce that this year I will be working again with Esprit Travel to offer a special, select Ceramics of Japan tour. Last year’s group was a joy to be with and the groups for the past two years have been so outstanding, that I convinced Esprit to offer the tour again. This year’s tour will be October 6th-16th.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I will be along as a guest lecturer and the tour will be led by Esprit guide, Keiko Nishi. Keiko will lead the group in a firm grounding in the arts of Japan as they relate to ceramics. I will be introducing the group to many of the wonderful ceramics artists in Kyoto, some area museums and visits to the ceramics areas of Shigaraki, Bizen and Tamba.

Kato's-kiln

The travel party is limited to only 12 and we are announcing the tour to our mailing list readers first. After you have the opportunity to consider signing up the tour will be announced to Esprit’s mailing list as well. If you are interested in the tour, please contact Esprit directly via email at ebaran@esprittravel.com to request a registration form and further information on pricing for singles or any other information you may need in order to make a decision. You can see more about the detailed tour itinerary here:

Exhibitions and Other News

At the gallery we have a few exhibitions planned and it all begins on March 28th for Inayoshi Osamu’s second exhibition. As many know, Inayoshi is an innovative and supremely talented potter from central Japan; the exhibition will end on April 6th. Next will be a debut exhibition here of Iga’s Tanimoto Yo from April 11th-25th with new sculptural forms from this well-established artist.

Inayoshi-DM

Single works recently added to the web gallery include a Mashiko chawan by the late great Murata Gen, new radical forms by Seto’s Takeuchi Shingo, a rare circa 1970 Shigaraki stemmed guinomi by Tsuji Seimei and many Bizen serving platters by Hoshino Sei, among others.

I realize many of you might not be on Facebook, yet if you are and haven’t ‘Liked’ our gallery page and would like to be updated more frequently than please visit that page at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Robert-Yellin-Yakimono-Gallery/268534563178741

With deep thanks for all your continued support of the gallery and artists and culture: we hope to see you online or here at the gallery—and hopefully on the Esprit Tour.

Cordially,

French Gastronomy: Escargots A La Bourguignonne at Figaro Food & Wine in Shizuoka City!

Service: Shy but very friendly and attentive
Facilities & Equipment: Very clean overall. Superb washroom. Entirely non smoking at lunch time!
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: French bistro-style gastronomy. Reasonably-priced wine list.

SN3O0056

Last night was a long night out I started before 6 to finish well after 11!
On my fourth stop of the night I decided to have a break from all the beer to have a glass of wine!

SN3O0057

Since I was prowling around Aoba Park Street, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City in the vicinity of Figaro and because it stays until very late my destination had been written on the wall (pavement!) all the time!

SN3O0058

Since my birthplace and family home are in Bourgogne, France, I just couldn’t resist the Escargots A La Bourguignonne/Burgundy-style snails on the menu!

SN3O0059

Most people think French snails, especially from Bourgogne for that matter, are always served in their shells with plenty of butter, garlic, parsley and white wine (and grated almond!), but this usually turns in a mey business. The other popular style back home is “meurette!

SN3O0060

They are served in a ramequin pot cooked with brandy, fresh cream and mushrooms!
Frankly speaking I prefer that style. It is actually tastier, healthier and more elegant!

What’s going to be the next dish there? You will have to wait until next week maybe?

Pavement “Regulations” Signs on Pavements in Shizuoka Prefecture! (Amended regularly)

SN3O5147

This sign against illegal bicycle parking was commissioned to a primary school by the City of Shizuoka!

If you look at pavements in any city in Japan, especially near stations and in crowded neighborhoods, you will discover all kinds of notices/signs directly printed onto pavements to remind citizens of regulations, be they friendly or prohibitive!
Some ar definitely welcome, while some are a bit useless, to say the least!
let me show you some examples I have have taken recently!

SN3O5132

Non smoking street signs found in many spots in Shizuoka City. Note that the bird is a kingfisher, symbol bird of Shizuoka City!

SN3O5112

A big no-smoking sign found near the south Exit of Hamamatsu JR Station!
It also extols on the benefit of good manners and not littering for a better environment in the city!

SN3O5076

A faded non smoking street sign near Yaizu City JR Station!

SN3O5138

Do not litter streets with cigarette butts in Fujieda City.
A bit of a half measure…..

SN3O5077

Illegal bicycle parking in Shizuoka City!

Although Shizuoka City and Prefecture respectively hold the record for the largest numbers of bicycles citis have declared war, albeit a losing one, against illegal bicycle parking, a totally un-ecological measure when you know that Shizuoka is also suffering from one of the highest ration of car exhaust fume pollution!

SN3O5041

Illegal parking for not only bicycles but also for bikes under a railway bridge in Hamamatsu City!

SN3O5169

Illegal bicycle paring taken at night in Shimada City!

SN3O5134

Two-hour limit bicycle parking zoen in front of Shizuoka City main post office!

SN3O5073

Another type of illegal bicycle parking sign in Yaizu City!

Some sign manufacturer must make a fortune with all those different types being ordered by cities!

SN3O5131

Another type of illegal bicycle parking sign in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5175

Illegal Bycicle parking in Fujieda City!

SN3O5177

A somewhat confusing sign!

Bear in mind that bicycles are allowed on pavements in Japan!

SN3O0119

Beware dashing out bicycles in Iwata City!

SN3O0123

Bicycle parking illegal. Bicycles will be confiscated in Iwata City!

SN3O5451

Metallic pavement sign for illegal bicycle parking in Kakegawa City!

SN3O5141

Within short distance from the sign foreamentioned you will find this sign in front of Shizuoka JR Station requesting people to get off their bicycles and push them along!

SN3O5132

Signs in front of Shizuoka City main post office requesting pedestrians and cyclist to use their own half of the pavement! Unfeasible in practice unfortunately!

SN3O5139

Cycle on this side of the pavement! (Shizuoka City)

SN3O5131

Red-colored sign indicating pedestrians zone on the pavement!

SN3O5138

Orange color instead of red color used for pedestrians!

SN3O5163

Some streets in Shizuoka City have a blue lane area for bicycles along streets.
In that case cyclists are asked not to use the pavements along them!

SN3O5164

Although no strictly on the pavement, the city felt obliged to warn cyclists using the blue area zone on the streets of bus stops!

SN3O5137

In Umeya Cho, Shizuoka City, I was a bit flabbergasted to notice this sign asking bicycles to run along the houses and the pedestrians to walk along the street half of the pavement!

SN3O5058

Sign asking bicycles to stop at the crossroads in front of the zebra crossing in Yaizu City!

SN3O5069

Sign reminding school kids to stop, look left and right before crossing the street in Yaizu City!

SN3O5019

The same with a different design in Yaizu City!

SN3O5473

Sign reminding school kids to stop, look left and right before crossing the street in Kakegawa City!

SN3O5472

The same with a different design in kakegawa City!

SN3O5471

Pedestrian stop sign at a crossroad in Kakegawa City!

SN3O0127

Stop, look left, look right (replaced) before crossing in Iwata City!

SN3O0142

Same again for small kids in Iwata City!

SN3O0160

Kids shouldn’t play on roads or by roads in Iwata City!

SN3O0113

Safe walking zone in Iwata City!

SN3O5068

This sign was sponsored by by the Shizuoka Prefecture Government to signify that the part of the parking in front of Yaizu Hospital next to Yaizu City Hall is reserved to physically impaired visitors>
Apparently pregnant women are also called physically impaired visitors…..

SN3O5309

Mind the step sign at a side entrance of Act City, Shizuoka JR Station!

Discovered on the pavement of the Oda River in Fukuroi City!

Cities in Shizuoka, and I’m sure in many cities in Japan have an interesting, artful and subtle way to advertise their tourism as well as to introduce their many symbols: pavement signs!

Keep your eyes open as it is easy to miss!

Vegan gastronmy seems to have acquired its letters in Shizuoka City as one more establishment opened last week in Takajo, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!
That makes no less than four of them now (one closed due to the pregnancy of its owner!)!
It is difficult to miss, so follow the indications carefully: go up Kitakado Street till Mizuochi Intersection (you will see a police box on the left-hand side). Turn right. You will find their sign on the right hand-side. If you haven’t found it before the first street on the left walk back!

SN3O0162

Walk upstairs. Panchavati is on your right-hand side!

SN3O0163

The building is a bit ancient but the restaurant is very clean with one counter and three tables. And it’s entirely non-smoking!

SN3O0164

The menu icludes two set menus, one curry plate, desserts and drinks.
All the vegetables used in the recipes are natural or organic and local.

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

French dessert: Saffron Creme Brulee and Pistachio Ice Cream at Pissenlit in Shizuoka City!

Service: Excellent and very friendly.
Facilities: Great cleanliness overall. Superb washroom (mouthwash and toothpicks provided!)!
Prices: Reasonable to slightly expensive, very good value.
Strong points: Interesting wine list. Great use of local products, especially organic vegetables and Shizuoka-bred meat and caught fish. Very inventive French gastronomy.

Saffron (or saffran, the spice) has the image of a seasoning used in combination dishes such Spanish paella, french Bouillabaisse or Indian rice, but it can also be used for extraordinary, is seemingly simlpl, desserts!

SN3O0181

Chef Toru Arima/有馬亨さん at Pissenlit French Restaurant in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, has come with this original creme brulee, basically vanilla seasoned, with an extra twist: saffron!
Once you have cracked the thick and succulent caramel toppings you will discover a very elegant creme with a mysterious flavor!

SN3O0182

Although the concept is French in essence, the home-made pistachio will add another aroma from the Mediterranean and middle East!
Note the fine saffron pistils sprinkled over the ice cream!
A rare treat and surely a discovery!

Shizuoka Sake Tasting: Shidaizumi Brewery-Shinshookoshi

This is an extraordinary sake!
It is made with rice cultivated exclusively in Izu since the Meiji period and sold there only.
That is, if you do not know a good sake/wine shop who can produce it out of the back storeroom!
I can’t really tell where I got it, but if you find it, just do not hesitate!

SN3O0081

Mr. Mochizuki, owner of the Shidaizumi Brewery in Fujieda City wanted to to give it to Ryuuma, a Japanese hero of the Bakufu and Meiji Periods if he still lived!

SN3O0082

Exclusively made with Aikokumai rice cultivated in South Izu Peninsula!
It is not staed as such but it must definitely be a Junmai ginjo!

SN3O0083

Rice: Aikokumai (South Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture)
Rice milled down to 55%
Alcohol: 16 degrees
Bottled in February 2014

Clarity: very clear
Color: Very faint golden hue
Aroma: Dry and fruity. Strawberries
Body: Fluid
Tasting: Dry and fruity attack.
Complex and surprisingly elegant. Strawberries.
Lingers for a while warming up the palate before leaving with hints of dry almonds and oranges.
Tends to take on a drier turn with food, but on the other hand tends to become sweeter as soon as drunk away from food with strong hints of milk coffee and dark chocolate.

Overall: A very unusual sake in Shizuoka Prefecture, but this is not surprising considering the rice being used.
Nevertheless far more complex and elegant than expected, thanks to great brewer’s skills proving that any good rice, whatever its origin, can be concocted into superlative sake!
A rare sake that you will have to search in South Izu Peninsula unless you have the right connections!

French Gastronomy: Pan-fried Seabream and Organic Spring Vegetables at Pissenlit in Shizuoka City!

Shizuoka has an abundant supply of fish, especially madai/真鯛/True seabream, and a wealth of vegetables in Spring!
It is only a question of combining them together!

SN3O0170

Chef Toru Arima/有馬亨さん keeps things simple.
he will first fry the fish skin down over a hot fire until it it has attained a paper thin cracking aspect.
Then he will turn it over and let it cook for a while inside the oven!

SN3O0171

All the spring vegetables are first lightly boiled in slightly salted water, drained and placed on the plate.
Notice the long rape flower placed under the fish to make sure that it does not come in direct contact with plate! Both decorative and technical!

SN3O0173

For a better view of the succulent fish!

SN3O0174

The sauce is an extraordinarily elegant and healthy seasoning made with walnuts, shiso/perilla leaves, asparagus and anchovy!

SN3O0176

Cauliflower, red daikon and snap peas in their pod!

SN3O0177

Rape flower and petit vert Brussels sprout!

SN3O0172

Et voila!
