Pavement “Regulations” Signs on Pavements in Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O5147

This sign against illegal bicycle parking was commissioned to a primary school by the City of Shizuoka!

If you look at pavements in any city in Japan, especially near stations and in crowded neighborhoods, you will discover all kinds of notices/signs directly printed onto pavements to remind citizens of regulations, be they friendly or prohibitive!
Some ar definitely welcome, while some are a bit useless, to say the least!
let me show you some examples I have have taken recently!

SN3O5132

Non smoking street signs found in many spots in Shizuoka City. Note that the bird is a kingfisher, symbol bird of Shizuoka City!

SN3O5076

A faded non smoking street sign near Yaizu City JR Station!

SN3O5138

Do not litter the streets with cigarette butts in Fujieda Cty!
A bit of a half measure…

SN3O5077

Illegal bicycle parking in Shizuoka City!

Although Shizuoka City and Prefecture respectively hold the record for the largest numbers of bicycles citis have declared war, albeit a losing one, against illegal bicycle parking, a totally un-ecological measure when you know that Shizuoka is also suffering from one of the highest ration of car exhaust fume pollution!

SN3O5169

Illegal bicycle parking taken at night in Shimada City!

SN3O5134

Two-hour limit bicycle parking zoen in front of Shizuoka City main post office!

SN3O5073

Another type of illegal bicycle parking sign in Yaizu City!

Some sign manufacturer must make a fortune with all those different types being ordered by cities!

SN3O5131

Another type of illegal bicycle parking sign in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5175

Illegal Parking in Fujieda City!

SN3O5177

A somewhat confusing sign!
Pavement area reserved to pedestrians and bicycles!
Bear in mind that bicycles are allowed on pavements in Japan!

SN3O5141

Within short distance from the sign foreamentioned you will find this sign in front of Shizuoka JR Station requesting people to get off their bicycles and push them along!

SN3O5132

Signs in front of Shizuoka City main post office requesting pedestrians and cyclist to use their own half of the pavement! Unfeasible in practice unfortunately!

SN3O5139

Cycle on this side of the pavement! (Shizuoka City)

SN3O5131

Red-colored sign indicating pedestrians zone on the pavement!

SN3O5138

Orange color instead of red color used for pedestrians!

SN3O5163

Some streets in Shizuoka City have a blue lane area for bicycles along streets.
In that case cyclists are asked not to use the pavements along them!

SN3O5164

Although no strictly on the pavement, the city felt obliged to warn cyclists using the blue area zone on the streets of bus stops!

SN3O5137

In Umeya Cho, Shizuoka City, I was a bit flabbergasted to notice this sign asking bicycles to run along the houses and the pedestrians to walk along the street half of the pavement!

SN3O5058

Sign asking bicycles to stop at the crossroads in front of the zebra crossing in Yaizu City!

SN3O5069

Sign reminding school kids to stop, look left and right before crossing the street!

SN3O5019

The same with a different design!

SN3O5068

This sign was sponsored by by the Shizuoka Prefecture Government to signify that the part of the parking in front of Yaizu Hospital next to Yaizu City Hall is reserved to physically impaired visitors>
Apparently pregnant women are also called physically impaired visitors…..

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 15: Yaizu City

SN3O5072

One of the most beautiful manhole covers in Yaizu City I discovered near the City Hall!
I couldn’t determine if the fish are tuna or bonito as both are brought there in large numbers!

Yaizu City is one of the major fishing harbor cities in Japan with Numazu City and Shimoda City Tokyo couldn’t survive without. The other day I intensively research the city for manhole covers and I came with more than I bargained for as I included the whole technical range!

Brace yourselves!

SN3O5050

An older big manhole with tuna/bonito!
I couldn’t find it colored version!

SN3O5051

This one is probably the most famous of all with Mount Fuji and tuna/bonito!

YAIZU-CITY-3a

The same in different colors!

YAIZU-CITY-3b

The same again without the colors!

YAIZU-CITY-4

An old-style sewer manhole cover!

SN3O5046

The same but newer and different in minute details!

SN3O5031

This manhole cover was truly enormous!

YAIZU-CITY-5a

Another sewer type manhole cover!

SN3O5067

A very large sewer-type manhole cover!
Note the central motif generally found in Yaizu City!

SN3O5026

Practically the same but medium-sized!

SN3O5045

A similar but older type and without the central motif!

SN3O5052

Another celebrated manhole cover over a fire hydrant and celebrating the Yaizu Harbor Festival!

SN3O5062

This type can be found in many cities but this is the first time I discovered one with “GAS” written in English!

SN3O5024

Once again a common small sized one but with “valve pit” written in English and “GAS” in Japanese!

SN3O5025

The same as above but “valve pit” both in English and Japanese!

SN3O5023

The two of them side by side!
Take your pick!

SN3O5021

A large one “blended” in its surroundings!
I will have to to find out what “C.C.B.” means!

SN3O5029

Another modern but rectangular sewer manhole cover “blended” into its surroundings!

SN3O5030

Similar as above but square!

SN3O5075

Two different types together over heavy water machinery access!

SN3O5054

I found many of this small and cute type in the city so I doubt that they are private!

SN3O5047

An older and slightly smaller version than the above!

SN3O5028

A newer type of a water valve pit cover with clear measure indications!

SN3O5053

Another newer water valve pit cover, probably private!

SN3O5055

A private water valve pit cover!

SN3O5057

An old gas valve pit cover!

SN3O5022

A tiny C.C.B valve pit cover with the Yaizu City motif!

SN3O5066

An old medium-sized sewer manhole cover!

SN3O5074

A medium-sized sewer manhole cover which can bear up to 400 kg!

SN3O5070

A rare old type of valve pit cover!

SN3O5065

This comparatively small-sized private rain water cover is written with “No cars allowed to run over”!

SN3O5056

The same, but form another company!

SN3O5063

This one is owned by Harmonate Company!

SN3O5064

A smaller and different type from the same company!

SN3O5077

I found this medium type rain water cover on the platform of Yaizu JR station platform which can bear up to 400 kg!

SN3O5078

The same as above but without the central motif and the ability to bear up to 450 kg!

Blimey, 37 pictures in all!

O Taiko Festival at Toyosumi Shrine in Yui, Shizuoka City on the New Year!

SN3O5142

On the new Year there are indeed quite a few unusual festivals happening, and Shizuoka is no exception!
I found this sign, among others, yesterday as I was strolling along the Old Kitakaido in Yui, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City and decided to investigate a little as I am really interested in attending it!

TOYOSUMIJINJA-4

This is a very old festival indeed as it took place for the first time in 797!

SN3O5143

It is one of the two major festivals in Yui with the Sakura Ebi Festival in May!
Yui had been a city of its own and one of the famous stations along the Old Tokaido Route as painted by Hiroshige until only a few years ago when it was merged into Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City

TOYOSUMIJINJA-1

It has been held all the time at Toyosumi Shrine/豊積神社, a very old shrine built in 791!

TOYOSUMIJINJA-5

The exact address is 静岡県静岡市清水区由比町町屋原185/Shizuoka Prefecture, Shimizu Ku, Yui Machi, Machiharaya, 185.
Get down at Yui JR Station and walk down the road on your right hand side. Walk past the harbor, turn left after Ando Dental Clinic and walk up all the way.

Held from January 1st at noon to the 3rd at 00:30 a.m.!

Entirely Non-Smoking Restaurants in Shizuoka Prefecture (as of December 15th, 2013)

TETSUA-SUGIMOTO

Beautiful Vegetables at Tetsuya Sugimoto in Shizuoka City!

I agree that this particular article has been long overdue.
Not only my expats friends, but many Japanese friends have been at pains at finding restaurants, bars and cafes where they wouldn’t have to put up with the hazards and stink of smoke inhaled and expelled by uncaring customers.
Some time ago I mentioned partially non-smoking restaurants but I see little point to mention them unless the entirely non-smoking times are clearly announced and respected!

This is of course not an exhaustive list, but it will be regularly updated as I visit establishments for work!
There is no special order to this list, they come as they come!

One more important point: Non-smoking is not the only criterion, good food is, too!
If you are kind enough to recommend me restaurants not introduced here it will be my pleasure to survey them!

The Last persimmon For The Birds!

SN3O5153

if you have a tree garden or an orchard, birds are not always unwelcome as they contribute to the ecological balance. too!
The Japanese, growers included, make a point of leaving some persimmons on top of their trees for the birds to feed in the winter.
This picture of squat persimmons/jirou kaki/次郎柿 was taken inside the beautiful tree park behind Il Brolo Italian Restaurant in Mariko, Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City!

Kura: Japanese Traditional Warehouses in Shizuoka Prefecture 5: Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City with Atsuko Kurata!

Hongou-cho1本郷町

Beautiful Kura in Hongo Cho!

“Kura” (in japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditonal Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

This posting features sights by My good friend, Mrs. Atsuko Kurata who found them in her native Shimizu Ku in Shizuoka City!
Incidentally Atsuko’s family name includes the word Kura/倉, the modern form of kura/蔵!

Hongo-cho2本郷町

Another picture of the above kura in Hongo Cho which is big and seems inhabited or used!

Sodeshi-袖師

Some kuras like the above may be seen only for far away them being completely isolated by surrounding buildings!

tip-of-kura

The roof tip of another one!

蔵っぽい1

This particular one has definitely become an abode!

behind-SEIYU1

This one is located behind Seiyu Department Store!

behind-SEIYU2

A closer view of the same protected by a barbed-wired wall!

石積みの蔵1

This one is old, tall and so solid!
It certainly deserves a few more photographs as seenn below:

石積みの蔵2

The side wall actually shows traces of another building which has disappeared a long time ago!

石積みの蔵-窓1

The window shutter is kept open so it is definitely still used!

石積みの蔵-窓2

Caught in the sun it does not look as forbidding as the side wall!

石積みの蔵-窓3

Note the light which has been added!
It could be interesting to see what it looks like at night!

石積みの蔵-窓4

It is located in Yamazaki and apparently belongs to a building company!

Garbage “Hall” in Mariko, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5163

Garbage, especially domestic garbage, disposal has always been a vital problem in this cleanliness-conscious (at least inside households) country.
In Mariko, a nationally-known tourist spot in Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City, you can actually discover how and from where it was conducted in Japan as far back as in the Edo Period!

SN3O5162

Inhabitants were regularly (on precise days designated by the local “governments”) depositing their garbage, usually burnable as most organic garbage was recycled into agriculture, in t\such “halls/sheds” whose doors could be locked to fend off animals, especially monkeys, bears, racoon dogs and wild boars.

SN3O5164
The sign ahs been replaced/ or placed!

“町内/machinai” means “inside the village/town”.
“ゴミ/gomi” means “garbage/trash/refuse”.
“の/no” means (of”.
“館/kan or yakata” means “hall/building/annex”!

Entirely Non-Smoking Restaurants in Shizuoka Prefecture (as of December 2013-Added to)

Scary Santa Claus and Garish Christmas Illuminations in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5416

Christmas, or Santa Claus, are not a feast but big business in Japan or Shizuoka!
But it can turn the landscapes into dubious spectacles….

SN3O5413

On my way to Shizuoka JR Station today I found myself confronted with an “illuminated” Asty Building which is part and parcel of the Railway Station!

SN3O5418

Mind you, some do like such illuminations…

SN3O5414

What’s that red thing over there?

SN3O5417

Somebody told me Santa Claus was using a snowmobile these days…

SN3O5415

Look above….

SN3O5416

Oh well….

Japanese “Toughies” Faces!

SN3O4973

Don’t even think of getting the sake?

The japanese, for all their innate gentleness and love of peace can put on some really fierce faces when required or requested!
A trait they learned in kabuki!
It certainly makes for interesting photography (and psychology, too)!

here is a small selection of pictures I took this year in different festivals in Shizuoka prefecture!

SN3O4974

If that guy on the left gets even nearer….

SN3O4949

Get out of the way, will ya!

SN3O4974

If one ever dares call me a sissy….

SN3O4978

Why do I have to look after these kids?

SN3O5047

Show some respect to your elders, kiddo!

SN3O5047

Chicken asses, that’s what they are!

SN3O5023

Who am I going to eat today?

SN3O5037

Do you have a problem?

SN3O5019

Do you want feel a bit of it?

SN3O4979

Where is my purse?

SN3O4965

You’ve got something to say about my hairstyle?

SN3O4966

You want my name?

SN3O4975

Blimey, it’s hot!

SN3O4977

Pain in the neck!

SN3O4971

Stupid me, getting drunk in front of those kids!

SN3O5283

Some will never look tough, whatever you do to them!

SN3O5020

Not so tough after all those drinks!

The number of foreigners and Japanese nationals who write about the food and drinks in Japan in English (or at least answer comments in English) has remarkably increased lately.
I thought it was about time to start some kind of round-up to help people discover these deserving foodies and their blogs! The list below is far from exhaustive, but I’m planning to update and announce it regularly!
Of course if you know more foodies residing in Japan, do please direct them to me and I will introduce them gladly!

Shizuoka Expat Blogger: Ashley Harvey telling about his experiences in “This is MY LIFE”

HARVEYS-2

These days more an more expats write in blogs about their daily life in Japan and naturally Shizuoka.
They share unique life experiences with readers all over the world and offer a true glimpse on life in Japan!
Ashley Harvey hails from New Zealand and is an ardent fan (me too!) of the Crusaders Rugby Team.
He has lived for quite some time in Shizuoka Prefecture working mainly in education.

Do visit his blog : This is MY LIFE!

HARVEYS

He is a lucky man being blessed with Ayako, his sweet wife and a growing family.
He has a lot to tell and share about Japan and Shizuoka from festivals to train sushi, a million crows ambush and Mount Fuji views!

HARVEYS-1

His hobbies are sports, especially rugby, cricket and soccer, education (I’m taking a risk here! LOL) and taking the mickey out of French men who remind him about rugby history!
he is a good friend of mine, actually!

Leave comments and I’m sure you will discover a fast new friend!
