Wall Paintings in Okitsu, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5151

I was walking back from Seikenji Temple (report coming!) to Okitsu JR Station when I felt the pangs of hunger.
As most restaurants were closed for lunch on that day in this neighborhood I decide to see what a local supermarket had to offer when I espied a wall painting in the distance!
I couldn’t investigate it as I don’t know when I will be able to come back to Okitsu!

SN3O5153

It had been painted quite a while ago but I suspect that the government is Shimizu Ku is behind it and probably had it done before they were merged into Shizuoka City!

SN3O5154

Just before the “Map” Mount Fuji and various fish had been painted.
I’ll show you later why Mount Fuji was so prominent!
As for the fish Shimizu is a major fishing harbor (it also has a major industrial harbor!)!

SN3O5156

I carefully checked and the fish represented there are really fish caught offshore!

SN3O5157

Right half of the picture:
Interestingly enough most of the fish are solitary!
Can you recognize them: True Seabream, File Fish, Puff Fish/Globe Fish, Scabbard Fish, Grouper, etc.

SN3O5158

Left half of the picture:
Here the fish are mostly in pairs!
Can you recognize them: Grey Seabream, True Seabream, Horse mackerel, etc.

SN3O5159

Crabs!
We do have quite a few in the Suruga Bay, and some very rare!

SN3O5155

The Map!

SN3O5160

The right half also featuring local products, such as citruses and tea!

SN3O5161

The Okitsu River is famous for its wild Ayu trouts!

SN3O5162

The right half with plenty of oranges!

SN3O5152

Can you see it?

SN3O5163

Mount Fuji beyond the supermarket!

SN3O5164

This is a season to keep your eyes well open as the cold and crisp air helps with photography when the sky is cloudless!

SN3O5165

mount has a knack to turn out in some interesting places!
I caught it from Platform 1 (you can’t from the others!) at Okitsu Station in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!
I’m sure to come with more as I often take the train across the Prefecture!

SN3O5049

Talk of half-baked jokes!
I discovered this I went out of Okitsu Station in Shimizu, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5050

Mind it seemed to be a decent enough bakery which goes as far as announcing the baking times of its various breads and cakes!
No wonder!
They probably meant “baked with a heart”! LOL

Kura: Japanese Traditional Warehouses in Shizuoka Prefecture 3-Galvo Gallery in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5024

“Kura” (in japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditonal Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

SN3O5022

I have been chasing “kura” in Shizuoka for some time but I had never realized that the most beautiful of them stood along my daily cycle trips in Shizuoka City!
There is a simple reason for that: I was always cycling past the front facade without bothering looking up!
And then yesterday as I was cycling around in search of a totally unrelated spot I espied the back of a grand kura across a large car park. Mind you, the car park is fairly new and lays in a spot formerly occupied by old buildings!

SN3O5023

So I got off my bicycle, leaving my bag in its basket (Japan is so safe, but I realized later that was border limit!), and practically ran across the car park (not really allowed, LOL!) to have a closer look.
How could I have missed such a big kura (enormous by Shizuoka standards) and the more for it being built of ancient red bricks? The roof had been restored and the fact that red does not really stand out in the city might have been other reasons!

SN3O5026

It is now owned by Galvo Gallery, a high end ladies fashion shop.
The great clothes in the display window tend to keep your eyes away for a more deliberate view of the building itself!

SN3O5025

Since the windows upstairs are kept shut they probably use the upper floor as a storeroom!

Traces of The Past….. (Shizuoka City, Japan)

SN3O5019

Japan is a continual contradiction. Or a dichotomy?
If you just keep looking out enough you will find an incredible amount of themes for photography in a country both so hit-tech and still so analog in all fields!
I was cycling (a good method to find “sites”) in Ryogae Cho and Shichiken Cho in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City when my eyes stopped on this big building that no one thought of cleaning a long time after an adjacent buiding had been pulled down to leave place for a car-park!

SN3O5020

The traces left by the defunct building are so vivid that the facade seems to wear its own ghost of the past…
At night nobody woule notice but it really uncanny in the morning by a bright late fall day!

SN3O5021

A zombie house?
Maybe.
Natural art?
Definitely!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 3

SN3O5503

Manhole covers do not have to be round but can come as square, rectangular and even “double-doored! as this one above!

I already know of many blogging friends in Japan taking pictures of manhole covers all over this country.
The reason is simple enough: as there is little chance of them being stolen (I can’t say the same thing back in our countries!) the local/municipal government often use them as touristic advertisements !

I continued looking around Aoi Ku and Shimizu Ku in Shizuoka City and in other cities.
As I’m sure there are quite a few around there should quite a few more articles about the subject in the offing!
I might even close this series with another “Ten Best”!

This time I concentrated in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, which allowed me to go a bit more technical all about it!

SN3O5526

Another large rectangular manhole belonging to NTT/Nihon Telephone & Telegraph Company!

SN3O5524

The log/arms/”mon” in the middle of this water duct/outlet manhole cover is actually the real seal of a Japanese family!

SN3O5525

Haisui/排水 means “drainage”. In that case, access to ducts and pipes taking care of excess or rain water!

SN3O5527

A large circular manhole owned by the Chubu Denryoku/Shizuoka Central Electric Power Company with their logo in the middle!

SN3O5573

The same company has a few rectangular ones with the same pattern and material as surrounding pavement tiles!

SN3O5528

I’ve finally found the name of one Company fabricating these heavy wrought iron manholes!

SN3O5529

Hasegawa Foundry Company!

SN3O5530

Access to the Municipal heavy water equipment!

SN3O5531

Another Haisui/排水/”drainage manhole cover blending into the surrounding pavement!

SN3O5594

Osui/汚水 means “dirty/soiled/sewer waters”!

SN3O5530

A manhole cover over a air-pressurized water outlet

SN3O5503

Today I decided to investigate Shimizu Ku in Shizuoka City on the advice of a friend who told me to look around Jirochoo Street in the oldest part of the former City of Shimizu which was absorbed by Shizuoka City some time ago.

SN3O5304

Although the attaining house is really old, I’m pretty sure that both buildings are inhabited!

SN3O5305

A suggestion for old traditional Japan photography buffs?o

SN3O5306

This small kura was standing almost next to the above one!

SN3O5307

it has obviously been refurbished. I wonder if it is used as a living quarter, a warehouse or an atelier…..

SN3O5310

I almost missed this very old one on the other side of the street!

SN3O5308

The roof is still in a good state, so it must still be somehow useed.
Unfortunately I couldn’t investigate much further as it was completely surrounded by private houses although I suspect it belongs to a nearby Buddhist Temple!

SN3O5309

Still makes for an interesting photograph!

Still looking around as this is a big prefecture with a lot of history.
If you find any in your neighboring I’ll treat you to coffee or beer!

Manholes in Shizuoka Prefecture 2

SN3O5313

Taken in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, the home of Shimizu S Pulse pro Soccer Team!

I found this one in Numazu City representing its harbor and Mount Fuji!

Sushi Bus in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5296

Took this picture today in front of Shizuoka JR Station!

Actually a couple of years ago Shizutetsu Line (private) had photographs of real sushi on this bus, but they switched to drawings instead. Someone must have complained about picture rights……………
