Gastronomic Destinations: Kanazawa City 2: Itaru (Honten) Izakaya!

SN3O5095

Sashimi plate, all local fish!

Service: Friendly and very attentive
Facilities and equipment: Very clean overall. Excellent washroom
Prices: Reasonable (considering the quality)
Strong points: Local fish, sashimi or cooked, crab and seafood, local vegetables. Great sake list!

SN3O5108

In Kanazawa City winter means early and cold nights.
People tend to go earlier to their favorite haunts and it is always a good idea to reserve as good or popular establishments are full by 6:00 p.m.!

SN3O5109

For our first night we chose to visit Itaru (Honten, there is another one)!
We came early enough and were lucky actually to get the best seat at the corner of the counter with a full view of the kitchen!

SN3O5094

In such a cold part of Japan, entrances are deceptively narrow to keep the cold out, but once inside you usually find yourself with plenty of space!
But it is still cold for some and knee blankets are available!

SN3O5093

Such a spot by the counter does not seem that popular there and we were really glad to grab it, which allowed us not only to watch the chefs at work but to share a chat with them!

SN3O5092Of course I ordered local sake!

In Kamazawa City, izakayas are proud of their heritage and always have plenty of local sake on their menu!
The above was Tengu no Mai!

SN3O5106

O-shino/home-made pickles!
Kanazawa is also famous for its countryside providing a wealth of vegetables!

SN3O5095

Local seafood for our sashimi plate:
Octopus, tuna, sweet shrimps, yellow tail and seaweed marinated seabream!
Interestingly enough the freshly grated wasabi is made with roots from Izu peninsula!

SN3O5097

from another angle!

SN3O5100

A local grilled fish: Nodokuro/Black throat!

SN3O5099

Expensive, even in Kanazawa!

SN3O5101

Another local specialty: Lotus root chawanmushi!

SN3O5102

Another local sake. Sorry, I forgot to note down the name!

SN3O5104

Another local specialty: hako crab sushi donburi!

SN3O5105

And to finish pork and vegetable stew!

SN3O5107

tasty, comforting and healthy!

SN3O4842

On october 19th (Saturday) from 11:00 to 20:00 and 20th (Sunday) from 11:00 to 19:00 everyone will be able to discover how extravagantly rich is our City of Shizuoka at 3rd Shizuoka Gourmet Kingdom Fest 2013!

It will be held in Aoi Ku behind (west entrance) the Shizuoka City Hall and all along the Aoba Street/Aoba Symbol Road!

Can you guess what is produced, caught and bred in our City?
See the list below (not exhaustive!):
-Shirasu/Sardine Whiting
-Sakura Ebi/Cherry Shrimps
-Beef
-Vegetables (impossible to count)
-Wasabi (it was born in Shizuoka City!)
-Strawberries
-Pork
-Poultry
-Tuna (did you know that? Especially Albacore/Binnnaga Maguro, also nicknamed Shizuoka Tuna!)
-Hanpen (dark sardine paste cakes)
-Oranges and citruses

Frankly speaking I already know that to show all products of Shizuoka City would require a far bigger space, but I’m sure there will be enough to overwhelm you!

Local sake brewed in this city will be represented by the following breweries: Haginishiki, Suruga (Tonko), Eikun, Kanazawagawa (Shosetsu), Kumpai and Sanwa (Garyuubai)!

Naturally all the major Japanese beer companies will also be represented as guests as they know you will be thirsty on these two days! LOL

French Gastronomy: Land & Sea/Conger Eel & Winged Bean at Pissenlit in Shizuoka City!

SN3O4640

Service: Excellent and very friendly.
Facilities: Great cleanliness overall. Superb washroom (mouthwash and toothpicks provided!)!
Prices: Reasonable to slightly expensive, very good value.
Strong points: Interesting wine list. Great use of local products, especially organic vegetables and Shizuoka-bred meat and caught fish. Very inventive French gastronomy.

Shizuoka Prefecture being practically “sandwiched” between sea and land in the mildest part of Japan occupies the most favorable location for a constant supply of fresh produce from the sea, the land and the mountains all year round.
It is more a question of finding new ideas to combine such products in season than to look for a rare product and try to arrange it.
Shizuoka conger eels or anago/穴子 are famed all over the country and can be sampled at many Japanese Restaurants.

SN3O4643

Chef Toru Arima/有馬亨さん being Japanese but first and foremost a French cuisine chef came up with the idea of preparing conger eel almost in Japanese manner by first sauteed and baking it to a crisp and seasoning with a sauce combining both traditional Japanese and French sauce ingredients (secrets, I’m afraid!) I can only guess, but the result leaves you baffled in between two traditions for your utter gustative pleasure!

Now, the wing bean (also known as the Goa bean and Asparagus pea, Four-angled bean and Winged pea) placed symmetrically atop the conger eel is actually called “Square bean/Shikaku Mame/しかく豆” in Japanese.
Would you believe it is a tropical legume plant native to Papua New Guinea?
It is a very valuable vegetable when it comes to all kinds of beneficial elements.
It has recently acquired a big reputation here in Shizuoka and is presented and eaten in all kinds of sizes.
The one used Tooru is still small and young.
Not only it is a tasty and healthy vegetable but it also offers all sorts of design idea thanks to its fresh color which helps enhance the darker colors of meat or fish!
Incidentally this winged bean was organically grown in Fujinomiya City at the foot of Mount Fuji!

Japanese Izakaya & Seafood Restaurant: Senbon Ichi in Numazu City!

SN3O4888

Service: Shy but attentive and kind
Facilities: Traditional but very clean. Very clean washroom.
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Local fish directly from the harbor. Excellent local sake list

SN3O4878

Senbon Ichi is a very traditional Japanese izakaya which specializes in fish as it is located in the middle of Numazu City fishing harbor, a major in Japan that Tokyo couldn’t do without!

SN3O4893

The draft beer served there, although not by a Shizuoka Brewery, is brewed in Shizuoka Prefecture!

As the Numazu harbor has been recently completely renovated I paid it a short visit before planning a longer one for an extensive report. I still took the time to eat lunch at Senbon Ichi (which has two establishments under the generic name of Minato Ichi/湊一).

SN3O4894

I want this poster of all the fishes caught in Japan!

SN3O4895

At lunch time the main dining room is non smoking. Take a seat near the windows and you shouldn’t be affected by the smokers at the counter!

SN3O4896

Great take-out deep-fried seafood available at reasonable prices, too!

SN3O4892

Very good point in their favor: they serve no less than 14 local sake!

SN3O4877

We decided to order the two specialties of the season and share them!

SN3O4881

Dragon ordered the sakura ebi kakiage donburi/sushi rice top with deep-fried cherry shrimps, the specialty of Shizuoka!

SN3O4880

A real beauty and plenty of it!

SN3O4887

I pinched a few to eat with the beer! Great snack, I assure you!

SN3O4890

The interesting thing is that there is a layer of grilled horse mackerel under the shrimps!
Actually Dragon was also provided with hot tea to mix it with some of her donburi for a great o-cha-zuke!

SN3O4888

As for me, I ordered a sushi donburi topped with local fish and seafood only!

SN3O4883

A photograph for my gastronomic collection!

SN3O4884

Raw shirasu/sardine whiting, sardine, horse mackerel, negitoro/grated tuna!

SN3O4885

Amberjack and a rose of tuna!

SN3O4886

Tamagoyaki, seabream and prawn!

SN3O4889

You will find a layer of finely chopped dry seaweed between the sushi rice and the sashimi!
So healthy!

Japanese Izakaya: Hinayaoshi in Mishima City!

IZAKAYA RANKING: +3
Service: +3 Very friendly and attentive
Facilities: +3 Overall very clean. Beautiful washroom
Prices:+1=+2 Reasonable
Strong points: Sake, Shochu, Umeshu, local seafood, yakitori

See “Izakaya Ranking” system at bottom of article!

SN3O4922

Chef Nobeteru Oota/太田のべてるさん opened Inayoshi 12 years ago in Mishima City and moved it to its present location 6 ears ago 7 minutes walk from Mishima JR Station south exit.

SN3O4916

Even after 6 years of constant cooking and serving the place is spotless clean!
When you realize he has only his wife and sometimes his mother-in-law to help, Nobeteru must be extremely busy morning to night ordering, buying and taking back home the day’s fish, vegetables and what else!

SN3O4915

With an incredible ist of 50 sake including about 25 from Shizuoka Prefecture, an unending list of shochu (even some featuring Shizuoka!), awamori and umeshu, this must be the place to go drinking in the east of the Prefecture,
You will soon understand how the place is so deservedly popular as it is full by 6:30 pm! Make sure to reserve beforehand!

SN3O4913

The sashimi is simply first-class and would be impossible to pay in Tokyo as the fish comes directly from the major fishing harbors of Numazu City, Shimoda City in Izu Peninsula! The plate above even includes rare Shizuoka Botan ebi/large sweet prawn and Tobiuo/flying fish from Shimoda! Moreve,r Nobeteru makes a point, even when the place is full, to introduce each fish and its origin to each customer!

SN3O4914

This time we sampled only tsukune/chicken balls and shiri/chicken tail, but you must come again just for the yakitori!
Actually it would be hard to try everything the first visit so be warned!

SN3O4917

The raw fish is extraordinary and the cooked fish sublime such as the “negima” above with tuna and amberjack served with yuzu koshio and grated daikon and ginger!

SN3O4919

If you like tofu you must ask for agedashi dofu, a must-try japanaese delicacy!

SN3O4920

The soup is just perfect! No wonder that in these times of economical crisis the establishment is full with local regulars!

SN3O4921

Seafood and vegetables steamed in Seikyou Miso! The wife will first open it for you, eventually let you take a photograph and mix it for you!

This was our first visit, but since it is so worth spending on a train ticket expect more articles soon!

Not only is his Homepage immensely hilarious and instructive, but he is also kind enough to invite like-minded bloggers’ suggestions and articles for mutual help and fun!
Having lived and written about Japan for more than 30 years I thought this particular article may find a small niche among Russell’s grand collection!

1) Sushi Birthday Cake Millefeuille

Shizuoka Prefecture being the top gastronomic region of Japan I certainly do not need to travel to Tokyo to enjoy top-class sushi! In any case, all these introductions to impress your date would deplete your purse for a long time whereas you will find it cheaper to travel down here and sample them together before visiting one of the most varied Prefectures in Japan!
The above creation was inspired by the French traditional Millefeuille cake accordingly to the chef (incidentally all pictures were taken inside Shizuoka Prefecture!).
The “cake” itself is made of layers of sushi rice, red lean tuna, avocado and crispy Japanese cucumber. The sushi above includes red lean tuna, cherry shrimps, salmon, flying fish roe and crispy Japanese cucumber!
He made it for my neighbors who actually celebrated a birthday and made such a request when they saw me served with the dish below:

TOP-10-SUSHI-2

2) Sushi Love Flower Bouquet

The concept for the lower part is the same as for the Sushi Birthday Cake but the toppings are diferrent: on a bed of katsuo bushi/dry bonito shavings and fresh shiso/perilla leaves three flowers (roses) made of red lean tuna, raw salmon and raw hirame/sole!

SN3O3474

3) Sushi Charlotte

The inside of this other “cake” is still of the same concept with layers of sushi rice, red lean tuna, avocado and crispy Japanese cucumber but the whole is wrapped inside thin slices of raw salmon and red lean tuna! Hard work, I can tell you! The topping is simply extravagant with ikura/salmon roe and finely chiseled crispy Japanese cucumber!

TOP-10-SUSHI-4

4) Sushi Rainbow Roll

No sushi dinner would be complete without at least one sushi roll!
Rainbow rolls are thick rolls wrapped around 7 ingredients representing the colors of the rainbow. Mind you, you will not find many with the blue and violet colors!
Now, this one could be called a super rainbow as it includes no less than 12 ingredients!
Guessing them out before sampling the roll is the essence of their enjoyment!

SN3O1797

5) “Baton” sushi

This is a suggestion for a lady treating her male date!
This style of sushi in Japan is called “Bou Gata Sushi/棒形寿司/Baton Sushi”.
The chef who made it for me in Gotemba City at the foot of Mount Fuji hails from Western Japan where pressed sushi/Oshi Zushi/押し寿司 is very popular. This particular one was made with half a Aji/鯵/Horse mackerel both grilled and marinated pressed over sushi rice. A whole meal in itself!

SN3B0158

6) Vegan Nigiri Sushi

“I can’t go to sushi, it’s all about fish!”
I don’t know how many times I heard this comment.
BUT, any sushi chef worth his salt should agree and be able to prepare sushi for vegan customers!
Shizuoka Prefecture is known all over the country for not having (officially and unofficially) the largest number of varieties of seafood, edible seaweeds but also for producing the largest number of vegetable and fruit varieties!
The possibilities are simply endless!
Nigiri sushi means small rice balled topped with whatever you fancy!
In this case: menegi/thin leek sprouts held by a band of dry seaweed, himesoba/buckwheat sprouts, fresh mitsuba/Japanese honeywort and the same plant lightly boiled in salt water and topped with ume/japanese plum pickle paste!

SN3O2969

7) Gunkan Symphony

“Gunkan/軍艦” means “Mother ship” in Japanese.
A smaller sushi rice ball is wrapped in a band of dry seaweed wider than the height of the rice ball to enclose ingredients otherwise more difficult to prepare atop simple rice balls.
They do make for some beautiful and colorful combinations!
From top to below, right to left: uni/sea urchin, sakura ebi/cherry shrimps (to be eaten fresh only in Shizuoka Prefecture!) with grated fresh ginger, quail egg with seaweed and dry bonito shavings, shirako/whiting (cod sperm sacs) and negitoro/grated tuna and chopped scallions!

SN3O2977

8) Ruby Pearls Sushi

This sushi is truly extravagant!
On, in and around a large gunkan, plenty and more fresh ikura/salmon roe with two small rolls (inverted) of salmon toro (fat belly part)!
A rare sight (as a combination), even in Japan!

SN3O2201

9) Land and Sea Gunkan Sushi

This is for the health-minded sushi lovers!
On gunkan-style sushi lined with finely cut naga imo/Japanese taro a quail egg yolk and a piece of red lean tuna!
Served already seasoned with light soy sauce and ready to pop into your greedy mouth!

SN3O2526

10) Japanese Foie Gras Gunkan Sushi

Ankimo/Frog Fish (Monk Fish) liver is prepared by steaming it in Japanese sake in the shape of a large sausage. It is kept for a while inside the refrigerator to acquire some solidity before being cut into all kinds of shapes. It is called Japanese Foie Gras because of the similar concept and texture of French Foie gras. Like foie gras it is soft, rich and utterly tasty!
The Japanese will usually serve it with momiji oroshi/grated daikon with chili pepper powder, chopped scallions and soy sauce in a plate as it is or as a gunkan in above photo.
Another must in sampling true Japanese gastronomy!

I can guarantee that your friend/lover/spouse will be overblown!

Japanese Recipe: Deep-fried Squid (cuttlefish), Rings and Tentacles

IKA-FRY-1

Here in Japan, and shizuoka in particular we have an abundance of squids (cuttlefish) and we do need to sometimes rack our brains for new recipes.
I understand that such sea food is not all that popular in some countries (in Muslim societies they are prohibited) but they make for tasty and reasonably cheap food.
Here is a (actually three ) simple recipe to enjoy them with a great glass of beer!

INGREDIENTS:

-Deep-fried suid:
Whole cuttlefish for three recipes at the same time
Flour
Egg
Panko/Breadcrumbs
Oil

-Deep-fried squid rings:
same squid
Flour
Water
Salt
Black pepper
Curry powder
Oil

-Deep-fried squid tentacles:
Same squid
Salt
Black pepper
Cornstarch
Oil

RECIPE(S):

IKA-FRY-2

Even if you mean to eat it only cooked choose a squid of the best freshness for best taste!
My favorite is Yari Ika/槍烏賊/Spear Squid
First pull out tentacles and keep them separately.

IKA-FRY-3

Take and throw away entrails That is unless you want to use the squid ink!).
Clean the whole inside and outside a first time with cold clean water.
Peel of whole outside skin. For better explanations and understanding look at these pictures describing the preparation a squid in detail!
Clean again and sponge off any excess water with a clean kitchen paper or towel.

IKA-FRY-4

Cut the body in rings. Leave the tail as it is or cut it in strings. Separate the tentacles or keep them whole.

IKA-FRY-5

Beat some eggs in a bowl.
Apply flour on all the squid cuts.
Dip into beaten eggs.

IKA-FRY-6

Bring oil to 180 degrees Celsius.
Deep-fry until nice orange-brown color.
Eat them hot dipped into a mixture of Worcester Sauce and tomato ketchup (or any suce of your liking!)

IKA-FRY-7

For deep-fried squid rings prepare a batter with water, flour, salt, pepper and curry powder (no need of eggs).
Dip the rings in the batter and deep-fry at 180 degrees Celsius.

IKA-FRY-8

Savor them crisp with a great craft beer!

IKA-FRY-9

As for the tentacles or geso/足 in Japanese, separate them to your liking and clean them in cold water. Sponge off all water.

IKA-FRY-10

Coat them with a mixture of cornstarch, salt and black pepper.

IKA-FRY-11

Deep-fry them in oil at 180 degrees Celsius just long enough to cook them. Soak off excess oil on a piece of kitchen paper or on a grill.

IKA-FRY-12

Serve them as hot as possible as they are or seasoned with chili pepper or/with mayonnaise!
Don’t forget the beer!

French Gastronomy: 4 More Fish and Seafood Dishes at Pissenlit in Shizuoka City!

SN3O4588

Service: Excellent and very friendly.
Facilities: Great cleanliness overall. Superb washroom (mouthwash and toothpicks provided!)!
Prices: Reasonable to slightly expensive, very good value.
Strong points: Interesting wine list. Great use of local products, especially organic vegetables and Shizuoka-bred meat and caught fish.

As I said time and time again Shizuoka Prefecture is blessed with Suruga Bay arguably the richest sea in Japan, especially when it comes to variety!
The other other Chef Toru Arima/有馬亨さん wrote a “music partition” with fish and vegetables in particular. Except for one fish, they are all found in Suruga Bay and the vegetables are organic and grown here in Shizuoka Prefecture!
So what did we have?

SN3O4587

An elgant appetizer concoted with cubes of seared bonito/katsuo from Omaezaki, lightly seasoned with garam masala, cubes of raw “mizu nasu” eggplants, all in a salt jelly equivalent to sea water and a sprinkle of golden sesame seeds!

SN3O4589

Edomae no Anago/Conger eel from Tokyo!

SN3O4590

The fish was poele/skillet-fried to a crisp and served with a fried basil on top astride a ratatouille of confit vegetables.

A view of the vegetables all grown organically in Kitayama farm in Fujinomiya City at the foot of Mount Fuji!

SN3O4593

Now, what’s inside that fish cake?

SN3O4594

No need to mention that Shizuoka Horse mackerel is simply extravagant in Japan!

SN3O4595

Amadai/Sweet seabream from Sagara fishing harbor in Western Shzuoka Prefecture!
This particular seabream is known for its fine nad soft scales. Instead of scraping them off, Chef Toru Arima/有馬亨さん brush them back and fry the fish on its skin creating a crispy “hairstyle”!

SN3O4596

The tiny vegetables are also grown in Kityama Garden!
Ratatouile with David Cross okra and black shishito pepper!

SN3O4597

The tiny vegetables are white goya/bitter gourd and green okra
As for the sauce, it is a beautiful red sweet pimento coulis accentuated with fennel oil!

No need to travel for me when it comes to fish!

Sushi: Sushi Sets, Bentos and Takeouts at Shizuoka City Department Stores-6

SN3O4538

A great set for two, but don’t fight over the single items! LOL

Due to the incredible wealth of fresh fish all year round, there is an enormous consumption of sushi at every level in Shizuoka City, from very cheap takeouts to expensive ( but certainly not as expensive as in Tokyo, qulity fro quality!) sushi restaurants.
Next time you come to Shizuoka City for a few days and are looking forward to budget sushi do visit the local department stores where you will have the surprise to discover tasty, from reasonably fresh to very fresh, and reasonably priced sushi sets, bentos and takeouts you can take beck to the hotel or into a park for instant pleasure.
Naturally I would advise the foreign (and Japanese) residents to do some homework!
As for prices count 100 yen for 1 US $ or 130 yen for 1 Euro!

This is unfortunately the last installment, but I will come with another theme next time!
Isetan Department Store’s display is not wide-ranging as the other other but it is nonetheless worth a visit and a long look. Be aware that their offerings go fast, so come early!

SN3O4547

At 1,500 yen (but with a 100-yen disount!) the price seems a bit high for this one, but it includes “hon maguro/blue fin tuna”, ikura and raw salmon among pricey items. Note the menegi/leek sprouts sushi nigiri!

SN3O4548

Two very reasonable set for 580 yen (minus a 100-yen discount):
Hirame Tsukushi/Sole (halibut, grouper) sushi nigiri
An all tuna set with sushi nigiri, grated tuna/negitoro gunkan and tekka maki!

SN3O4538

An individual sushi set for 780 yen including tuna, flying fish roe, negitoro gunkan and cuttle fish!

SN3O4536

Two different individual all-tuna sushi sets for 580 yen! Now, this is cheap!

SN3O4537

The day Special sushi set!
15 sushi pieces for 1,780 yen! A whole dinner!
Including pricey items such as hon-maguro, mebachi tuna and conger eel!
What would you pay for that even in a sushi restaurant?

SN3O4539

4 inari zushi for 210 yen! The perfect accompaniment to another set of fish or fowl for example!

SN3O4540

All kinds of sushi rolls (2 per pack cut into 4 pieces each) from 210 yen to 420 yen! An embarrassment of choices!

SN3O4541

kaisen donburi/Fresh seafood bowl with 7 different ingredients including tuna on a bowl of sushi rice! Only 680 yen! A whole meal!

SN3O4542

A Shizuoka specialty: Anago donburi!
Broiled conger eel and tamagoyaki atop rice!
At 580 yen, a real bargain!

Right, that is all for sushi sets, bentos and takeouts at Shizuoka City Department Stores!
Of course if I have the opportunity to visit other Department Stores in a different city of our Prefecture I’ll be glad to report on them!

Any suggestions for the next theme based on food you could buy at Shizuoka City Department Stores?

Japanese Gastronomy: Eels at Chigusa in Hamamatsu City!

SN3O4451

Service: shy but very friendly
Facilities: traditional but very clean
Prices : reasonable for eels (eels are very expensive in Japan)
Strong points: Eels! Only local fish used! Great view on Hamana Lake

Summer is eel eating time in Japan, especially in Shizuoka renown all over the country for its great eels mainly bred around Hamamatsu City and in Hamana Lake in particular.
So the other day we decided to visit at long last a famous but traditional and very reasonable eel restaurant lost by the Hamana Lake in Mikkabi, Hamamatsu City, called Chigusa (ちぐさ/千草)!

SN3O4429

So instead of boarding a regular train, and taxi or bus we took a local train along the Tenhama Line (Japanese web site), a trip I would advise any true traveler (and photographer) to take to enjoy the sights and discoveries of old Japan!
We got down at an unmanned (yes, they still exist! Talk about Japanese trust!) station in the blazing sun.

SN3O4430

The station is called Okuhamanako/Far side of Hamana Lake.
Get down there and try to reach the main road through the countryside as soon as you can (there are many ways!)!

SN3O4431

This particular area, Mikkabi in Hamamatsu City, is famous all over Japan for its (still green now) oranges!

SN3O4436

Once you reach the main road turn left and walk along for 10 minutes along the Hamana Lake!

SN3O4434

You can’t miss it even if you can’t read Japanese as a long black eel is welcoming you from afar!

SN3O4457

A picture/snapshot not to miss!

SN3O4435

The entrance with unagi/鰻 written on the noren/暖簾, entrance curtain!
Who’s that guy taking a picture? LOL

SN3O4437

Past the entrance you will find these long metal tubes wrapped in rice straw ropes.
What are they? Can you guess?

SN3O4456

Portable fireworks!
This very rare festival is held beginning of August in Hosoe near Hamana Lake. I couldn’t manage my schedule to report but I’ll do it next year! Promise!

SN3O4455

Have a good look at the souvenirs before entering the dining room!

SN3O4438

Very traditional Japanese atmosphere inside!

SN3O4440

The menu is in Japanese, but the pictures will give a very good indication!
I personally chose the above, the best eel “double-decker” lunch set. Even at 3,200 yen (32 US $) it is very reasonable when you realize that the eel prices have almost doubled in the past 3 years!
And the eels are exclusively locally bred in Hamana Lake!
It is worth the trip, even by car as there is a big car park!

SN3O4442

Another important detail: you will have to wait some time before your order arrives. A good sign proving that contrary to the “cheap diners” food is individually prepared for best quality!
The lunch arrives at your table in a bento box shape on a tray.

SN3O4443

Take off the lids…. et voila!

SN3O4444

A succulent light soup containing eel liver/鰻肝!

SN3O4445

Home-made Japanese pickles, o-shinko/オシンコ!

SN3O4446

The broiled eel double decker/unagi jyuu/鰻重!

SN3O4451

Two layers of eel grilled and broiled to perfection with two layers of freshly (very important!) steamed rice enhanced by the sauce of the eel
Take your time and use chopsticks to make sure you eat slowly and appreciate it to the fullest! This eel in eel country!

SN3O4454

This gourd-shaped receptable contains shijimi/七味 mixed spice powder you can sprinkle over the eel for extra zip!

SN3O4439

Dragon (my worse half) chose the above which contains a single layer of broiled eel but with finely shredded omelet between the fish and the rice!

SN3O4448

Really appetizing, isn’t it?
I forgot: we visited Chigusa on Dragon’s advice! LOL

SN3O4450

Do I need to mention I helped Dragon to finish it under the pretense of sharing?

SN3O4453

It would certainly be a dilemma if I had to choose only one of those two lunches!
Make sure to come with a special company to taste as much as you can as I daresay that yen for yen this is the best value for eel in the whole Prefecture! (but I’m sure a lot of people will disagree! LOL)
