Kura: Japanese Traditional Warehouses in Shizuoka Prefecture 7

“Kura” (in japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditional Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

I was reporting on a local festival in Yui, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, when I discovered two more kuras!
Actually there are many of them in Yui, especially along and the Old Tokaido Road where they were the first refuge against typhoons and tsunamis.
But most of them have now been transformed into hangars, shops and abodes with their second floors shaved off and using only the solid first floor as a base.
Therefore there only a very few with their roof intact!

I noticed this one by pure chance as it was completely surrounded by buildings of all kinds!

It was obviously used either as an abode or as a storeroom, and I managed to a peek at this window as the inhabitants seemed to be away during the New Year Holidays!

I found this old one along the same street. As it was surrounded by a car park I had an easier access to it!

The entrance was being repaired but the whole building, although small, seemed very till very solid!

The window and the roof were in good repair!

These iron supports are found in most kuras. They are there to keep the roof securely onto the walls in case of stong winds. Typhoons can easily send the tiles flying!

Because Shizuoka City and Prefecture were more an area of intense travelling than Kyoto or Tokyo where people gathered and built according to the size of their population (and money), it seems that our region lacks in historical and cultural assets.
Actually, until Tokugawa Ieyasu made his retreat at the beginning of the 17th Century in Sumpu (Shizuoka City) travelers had still to stay there overnight and eat and drink. Accordingly, many old houses and lodgings can still be discovered along the Old Tokaido Route.
Tourists should not overlook them as their smaller size, easier access and cheap/free entrances provide them with a rare glimpse of life of past times. Sometimes such sightseeing off the beaten tracks is more rewarding than grandiose but crowded monuments!
One house worthy of a visit lies along the Old Tokaido Route in Yui, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, only a few minutes away on foot from Yui JR Station: Koike Village House which was incidentally registered as a National Important Cultural Asset in October 1998.

In Shizuoka City it practically jumps out in front of you if you look to the east!

Baked Milanese saffran risotto at Solio!

Shizuoka City being in the middle of a Prefecture benifiting from the greatest variety of ingredients in the country is replete with great restaurants, especially Italian establishments that could well have a lot of famed chefs blushing of envy!

This means that the average level is high and the competition fierce.
I do not complain as this state of affairs allows me to enjoy my favorite Italian dish, namely risotto!

American Gastronomy: Meat Loaf with Mashed Potatoes and Demi-Glace Sauce Lunch at BLUE BOOKS cafe in Shizuoka City!

Equipment & Facilities: Great overall cleanliness. Superb washroom in same building separated from the cafe.
Prices: Reasonable for such big servings!
Strong points: Very generous cafe/bistro multi-genred gastronomy. Great variety. Great products. Entirely non-smoking in very modern atmosphere. Great books!

It is cold these days, even in in Shizuoka City, the second mildest area in Japan after Okinawa, and to top it all I had been fighting off my regular Atumn/Winter cold when I needed something hot and fulfilling for lunch the other day!

It was only natural that I took refuge at BLUE BOOKS cafe in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, as it is one of the biggest and warmest cafe/restaurants in town!
Someone might comment that I’m becoming American in Winter when I chose the Meat Loaf with Mashed Potatoes and Demi-Glace Sauce Lunch Set (I didn’t have the courage to point out the typos!)!

Railway Stations in Shizuoka Prefecture 3: Yui JR Station and Vicinity

Some stations, even larger ones, are better left alone, but one should give at least one chance to any you venture to get off as there is always a chance that such a station and its vicinity contain enough helpful information, especially in a touristic spot.

Yui is such a station along the Tokaido Railway Line about 20 minutes from Shizuoka JR Station in the east direction and found between Okitsu and Kambara Stations.
After all Yui has always been an important stage along the various routes coursing Japan between Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto as superbly described in many ukiyo-e/woodblock prints.
So, although the railway station is tiny, keep your eyes open (and don’t forget you can espy Mount Fuji from the overhead tracks bridge!)!

I know a lot of stations which don’t bother, but you will find a window display of the local products typical of Yui.
Bear in mind that Yui was a city of its own before being recently merged with Shizuoka City and Shimizu Ku!

Ogura Co. specializes in processed sakura ebi/cherry shrimps and fish!

Yui Cannery Co. is famous all over Japan for its “White Ship” olive oil tuna cans!

Inaba Co is another big tuna cannery!

Kakusa Co specializes in processed fish products, especially dry and liquid fish dashi/soup stock!

The Yui Cake (Japanese cakes) Association is also featuring their products!

With all that fish around Yui is home to high end brand of dog and cat food producers!

Yui is also home of famous kamaboko/steamed fish paste and kuro hanpen/black sardine fish paste cakes, the latter found only in Shizuoka Prefecture as demonstrated by the Yui Kamaboko Makers Association!

Next time you visit Yui buy some in the many shops along Sakura Ebi Street as an unusual souvenir! Great with sake or beer!

The small but renown Hiroshige Museum hang their posters inside to inform all-comers of their events!

Yui might be small but you will gratified to discover that most signs are bi-lingual (sometimes with funny renditions!)!

You will find the double Yui Emblem of Sakura Ebi and Mount Fuji everywhere, so keep your eyes open for some interesting shots!

You will find big signs hung by local establishments but like in any touristic spots big signs do not always guarantee the best of quality. To take with a pinch of salt! After all there is plenty around!

You must take a look at Village Head Koike’s Mansion on Tokaido (meaning “Village Head/Chief’s Mansion along the Tokaido route. Free entrance) that I will talk about in an article soon to be posted and the Museum of Light, one of the only three lighting (candles and so on) museums in Japan! (entry 500 yen including coffee and an oral and manual demonstration!)!

Shark Bus in Shizuoka City!

I finally caught the “Shark Bus” in Shizuoka City!
I had noticed quite a few times and was really looking forward to take pics of it!

I was cycling on the pavement (it is ok in Japan!) and Had to stop at a traffic light when the bus just stopped by my side!
I just had the time to get off my bicycle and take pictures before it went away!
Some people may have wondered what this gaijin nerd was about!

Mind you all that seafood does not seem to worry about that horrible shark!

The design is actually the winning of a contest organised among primary schools in Shizuoka!

O Taiko Festival at Toyosumi Shrine in Yui, Shizuoka City on the New Year!

On the new Year there are indeed quite a few unusual festivals happening, and Shizuoka is no exception!
I found this sign, among others,yesterday as I was strolling along the Old Kitakaido in Yui, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City and decided to investigate a little as I am really interested in attending it!

This is a very old festival indeed as it took place for the first time in 797!

It is one of the two major festivals in Yui with the Sakura Ebi Festival in May!
Yui had been a city of its own and one of the famous stations along the Old Tokaido Route as painted by Hiroshige until only a few years ago when it was merged into Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City

It has been held all the time at Toyosumi Shrine/豊積神社, a very old shrine built in 791!

The exact address is 静岡県静岡市清水区由比町町屋原185/Shizuoka Prefecture, Shimizu Ku, Yui Machi, Machiharaya, 185.
Get down at Yui JR Station and walk down the road on your right hand side. Walk past the harbor, turn left after Ando Dental Clinic and walk up all the way.

Held from January 1st at noon to the 3rd at 00:30 a.m.!

Yui, which was still a city of its own not so long ago before it was merged into Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, might be relatively small, but is fishing harbor town known all over Japan for its succulent cherry shrimps/sakura ebi and thus deserved some particular attention!

Tsunami Hitting Mount Fuji!

I reckon I had a hard time choosing the title and might risk some complaints!

I found this sign near the harbor of Yui, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, famous for its cherry shrimp/sakura ebi fishermen!
It a zone particularly sensitive to tsunami although escape would be far easier than in large cities.
Mount Fuji looking over the tsunami was too good to ignore!
Note the sakura ebi design!

The text says: “Earthquake! Tsunami! Take refuge immediately!”

As I was along along the old Tokaido Route in Yui, Shimizu Ku, in Shizuoka City, I knew something was weird when my eyes were attracted by this overhead sign!

Apparently the landslide has already happened on the sign!

Japanese Rice Recipe: Yaki Meshi

YAKI-MESHI-1

If you have any steamed rice left, do not worry as this is a chance to make a totally new dish for the pleasure of your family or impressing a special person! And it always so easy!
I’ve got a few stored and this is the second installemnet: Yaki Chahan/焼飯!

This recipe being a guide more than anything I leave to your priorities as for the quantities!

INGREDIENTS:

Hot or cold steamed rice
Bacon
Vegetables
Eggs
Salt
Pepper
Japanese sake
Light soy sauce

RECIPE:

YAKI-MESHI-2

Prepare all ingredients before starting to avoid running after something in the middle of cooking!
As an example get the following ready:
Steamed rice
Lettuce
Cabbage
Bacon
Eggs (1 per person)

YAKI-MESHI-3

Cut the bacon in strips thin enough to be easily mixed with the rice.
Instead of bacon you can use pork belly, beef, minced meat or canned tuna, whatever you have on that day!

YAKI-MESHI-4

Chop the lettuce and cabbage. Add some salt to them. Mix by hand. This step is to help the vegetables to sweat out their water which would soak the rice into the wrong taste and appearance. Put aside.

YAKI-MESHI-5

One can use hot or cold steam rice, but cold steam rice is better as it contains less water.
Beat the egg into a smooth liquid and mix well with rice.

YAKI-MESHI-6

Fry the bacon first in wok.
One can use normal oil with the meat, sesame oil, butter or leek oil.
Of course you may add some chopped garlic at that point!

YAKI-MESHI-7

Once the bacon or meat is cooked, press the chopped vegetables into a ball to get rid of its excess water. Throw the water away.

YAKI-MESHI-8

Add the egg rice and stir fry over strongest fire possible.

YAKI-MESHI-9

Once the rice has properly cooked add the vegetables and stir fry until well mixed together.Do it in as little time as possible or the vegetables will become sticky!

YAKI-MESHI-10

Season with salt, pepper and soy sauce, stir quickly and serve hot!

Kura: Japanese Traditional Warehouses in Shizuoka Prefecture 6: Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City with Atsuko Kurata!

We will have to check this ivy-covered kura again in the summer!

“Kura” (in japanese 蔵 or 倉) means “warehouse” or “Storehouse”.
In traditonal Japan, especially during the Edo Era, as most of buildings and urba/village structures were made of wood, fires were the bane of society by and large.
However well-protected a fire would consume a house or buildings and all its properties within minutes.
Hence a special building or warehouse was needed to protect goods and properties against such a catastrophe.
But erecting a storehouse solely made of concrete, stones and some metal cost a vast amount of silver and gold and only rich merchants and nobility could afford them. Even castles could not be built entirely of stone then.

This posting again features sights by my good friend, Mrs. Atsuko Kurata who is turning into a real detective when she found no less than five of them in her native Shimizu Ku in Shizuoka City!
No wonder as Atsuko’s family name includes the word Kura/倉, the modern form of kura/蔵!

You must remember that Shimizu has had always been and still is a major harbor in Japan.
It may have seen better days as there were enough rich people in need of such warehouses!

But Atsuko thinks that this particular one might be haunted!

This particular kura was owned by Yohei Suzuki, the founder of Suzuyo Company, the largest transport company in Shizuoka Prefecture and the owner of Fuji Dream Airline!

Shizuoka Sake Tasting: Suruga Brewery-Chumasa Daiginjo Genshu

Suruga Brewery in Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City, has certainly come a long way since they acquired the license of defunct Yoshiya Brewery!

Not only they bought the license but kept on producing the former brewery’s names: Chumasa, Tokaido and Oni goroshi!

This particular sake has been awarded the accolade from The Shizuoka Prefecture Government!

Rice: Yamada Nishiki (Hyogo Prefecture9
Rice milled down to 40%
Alcohol: 16~17 degrees
Dryness: ; 7
Acidity: 1.1
Bottled in October 2013

Clarity: Very clear
Color:Faint golden hue
Aroma: Assertive, dry, fruity. Apples
Body: Fluid
Taste: Well-rounded deep, dry, fruity attack. Pleasant alcohol.
Very complex.
Banana, apples, pears, oranges, nuts, hints of dark chocolate.
Disappears fairly quickly with drier oranges and almonds.
Takes on a sweeter turn with each sip to immediately switch back to a drier accent.
Dry banana, almonds and pears making a comeback with every sip.

Overall: A very complex and elegant sake in spite of its high alcohol content.
Although thoroughly enjoyable with any food, is best enjoyed slowly on its own, either chilled or at room temperature.
Especially comforting after a cold winter day as an aperitif, or even better as a night cap.
If you must absolutely drink it with food, enjoy it with salads or fish.
