Takoyaki at Ebisu in Shizuoka City! 静岡市ーたこ焼きー戎!

SN3O5041

Service: Very friendly. Great explanations
Facilities and Equipment: Very clean if old overall. Washroom in nearby Shizutetsu Store
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Osaka-style takoyaki, senbei takoyaki, ika yaki, yakisoba
Entirely non-smoking inosde!

SN3O5035

i my case for takoyaki initiated recently I got some help from Japanese friends.
The next place i was recommended no later than yesterday was Ebisu/戎 (one of the seven Luck Deities in Japan!)!

SN3O5036

Now, this particular takoyaki is Osaka-style because the son/chef did learn his trade in that big city!

SN3O5037

Smokers are requested to damage themselves outside in the cold!

SN3O5038

Now, as the place is really busy at lunch time (and around 17:00 when high school teens flock the place) I had plenty of time to take pictures to supply myself with enough information!

SN3O5039

I want this noren/暖簾/entrance curtain!

SN3O5041

My first order: takoyaki as they are! One can use sauces et al as he/she wants or have a small bowl of cold/hot dashi stock soup with it!

it was lunch time today and I was hungry, so I asked quite a few things to the surprise of the mother! It is a mother and son’s venture.
The mother is a great smiling lady with an almost maternal attitude towards her customers she repeatedly advise on how to eat her shy son’s preparations!

SN3O5040

The small bowl of stock soup!

SN3O5042

You drop the takoyaki inside the stock soup, break it with your chopsticks (easy as they are soft) and eat ii by picking the pieces with your chopsticks. When you have finished you drnk the soup and all the tiny pieces you didn’t take out! Delicious until the very end!

SN3O5043

Next I ordered another serving seasoned with sauce, chopped scallions and white sauce (mayonnaise)!

SN3O5044

For a closer view!

SN3O5046

Have a peek under to see how they are presented!

SN3O5045

As they are very hot, it is a good idea to break them first….

SN3O5047

and have a look inside!

SN3O5048

my third order: takosen!

SN3O5051

“takosen” is a combination of “tako” for “takoyaki” and “sen” for “senbei/rice cracker”!
The rice cracker is a large and thin but crispy and solid enough shrimp rice cracker which is broken manually to sandwich a couple of takoyaki inside and served inside a hamburger paper bag!

SN3O5052

The insides of the rice cracker are coated with no less than three seasonings!

SN3O5049

For a closer view!

SN3O5050

You may eat the lt as a sandwich/hamburger, but do be careful as it is flaming hot!
I guarantee you I ate it very slowly!

Mark: 91/100

I’m planning to visit the place again with a friend the day after tomorrow as I want to taste their ika yaki/girlled cuttle fish and yakisoba!

Takoyaki at Gindaco, Ceneovea Department Store, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5026

Service: Friendly and smiling
Facilities and equipment: Cenova Department Store facilities. Very clean overall
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: Tokyo-style takoyaki

Until a few years ago I wouldn’t have bothered looking for takoyaki in Shizuoka City or Prefecture as we had the best in the whole Tokai area, but following the departure of the owner to another world and squibbles between the inheritors, the building and property ( a lot of money!) were sold and we found ourselves in no man’s land.
But at the same time it offered an opportunity for new owners and chains to open shop.
Therefore, I found myself on the road again to re-discover my favorite Japanese comfort food!

SN3O5020

Gindaco銀だこ is a big chain from Tokyo which opened a shop on the third floor of renovated Cenova Department Store in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5021

The takoyaki are all the same but with different toppings and you can eat them on site.

I’m not keen on food chain stores, but since a Japanese friend recommended them I had to give it a try!

SN3O5022

Being it inside a busy department store two staff are constantly churning out the takoyaki while a third staff takes care of the orders and cashier!

SN3O5023

Fast work in a clean environment!

SN3O5024
Almost ready!

These takoyaki are definitely Tokyo-style.
You can find Osaka-style takoyaki in town which are quite different, especially in texture!

SN3O5025

I ordered the basic kind to discover the real taste. Some people tend to attach more importance to the sauce and toppings, but I don’t!
At 8 pieces for 550 yen, they were reasonable.

SN3O5027

For a closer view.
They were seasoned in the basic way with sauce/tare, finely shaved katsuo bushi/dry bonito shavings and finely chopped greens.

SN3O5028

The outside is comparatively thin but solid and crisp, making it easy to eat with chopsticks or toothpick.
The piece of octopus is of a good size and crunchy.
The dough inside is soft and contains plenty of ingredients.

Overall: Easy to eat, tasty enough, hot and ready.
Mark: 62/100

Continuing the investigation!

Prices: Reasonable to slightly expensive
Strong points: Sushi and tuna. Great lunch sets. Entirely non-smoking!

SN3O5264

for our last meal in kanazawa City, we decided to have d\fish again and more precisely sushi!

SN3O5254

Hirai Honten is conveniently located on the second floor about the great Ohmicho Market whose fish only has to travel upstairs to be served on your plate!

SN3O5255

Visitors who do not like raw fish should be discouraged (overawed? LOL) as they also serve some great cooked seafood sets!

SN3O5256

We chose two fairly similar sets!

SN3O5258

My donburi set, quite extravagant!
Can you spot the salmon roe with real gold flakes, the sea urchin, the oyster, the conger eel, the yellowtail and crab?

SN3O5259

Can you spot the tuna, negitoro and sweet shrimps?

SN3O5260

Another view of the crab!

Strong points: Traditional Japanese gastronomy. Great local fish and seafood. Excellent sake and shochu list. French spoken!

I wanted to eat some fresh fish for lunch for once today and I’m lucky to have a very good Japanese restaurant near work that serves excellent Japanese lunch sets for all budgets!
They are famous all over the city for their fish, particularly tuna!

SN3O5265

This is the lunch I ordered.
Although it was bigger than most of my neighbors’ lunches it is very reasonable at 20 US $ or 15 Euros!

Gastronomic Destinations: Kanazawa City 4: Miyuki Honten Izakaya!

SN3O5200

Service: Very friendly, informative and always ready for a great chat!
Equipment and facilities: Very clean overall. Excellent washroom
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Local gastronomy. Oden. Great sake and drinks list. Great use of local products. Long history and faithful local clientele.

SN3O5207

Miyuki Honten is a true Kanazawa City izakaya with a small entrance easy to miss!
The reason is simple enough: like many such establishments in this cold part of Japan, it is all in length with a narrow entrance to keep the cold out!

SN3O5192

Even at 17:00 it is a busy place and you had better reserve in advance, not like us who were very lucky to find once again the best seats at the counter because we entered very early!

SN3O5198

They certainly need a many staff with so much on the menus!
We were told they use 14 part-timers in shifts of threes to be added to the husband, wife and son team (and probably a hidden cook or two!)!

SN3O5197

like all good izakayas you will have a good idea of the gastronomy served with all the appetizers lined up in front of the counter!
Mind you you can take a seat at a table or away from the crowd on a tatami!
But again like in any good izakayas conversation with the owners can be so great fun!

SN3O5193

have a good look at the exhibited food before delving into the menu!

SN3O5199

And you must try the local oden, an unending conversation topic!
The place was opened 46 years ago. The original owner is still alive and at 87 decided to open his own little karaoke bar for his personal fun and leave everything to the very capable second generation!

SN3O5194

As for the many sake don’t hesitate to consult the owners or staff if you are tourists like us!

SN3O5195

lightly cooked local na no hana/rape flowers as the appetizer with the first drink!
Already a good sign of the above-average quality!

SN3O5196

Simmered cuttle fish!
They do serve excellent sashimi, but as a non Japanese their cooked seafood should be a delight if you are not keen on anything raw!

SN3O5200

Great oden!
A local discovery: they serve shumai in oden in Kanazawa City!

SN3O5201

Now, we parctically heard all the customers order the above steamed grated lotus root ball!
Delicious and very local in concept!

SN3O5202

Home-made potato and vegetables salad!
Perfect with beer or sake!

SN3O5203

One my favorites!
Cod milt tempura, another specialty of the house!

SN3O5204

Home-made specialty that everyone ordered too: white satsuma age/deep-fried fish paste! A must!

SN3O5205

Beef suji/tendons and tofu nikomi/stew!

SN3O5206

Nanban-style deep-fried chicken!

Pity there was a limit on our stomachs and that we had to go home the next day!
I plan to come back to Kanazawa City again and Miyuki Honten is first on my list!
One of the very best izakayas in all Japan!

Service: Friendly and very attentive
Facilities and equipment: Very clean overall. Excellent washroom
Prices: Reasonable (considering the quality)
Strong points: Local fish, sashimi or cooked, crab and seafood, local vegetables. Great sake list!

SN3O5108

In Kanazawa City winter means early and cold nights.
People tend to go earlier to their favorite haunts and it is always a good idea to reserve as good or popular establishments are full by 6:00 p.m.!

SN3O5109

For our first night we chose to visit Itaru (Honten, there is another one)!
We came early enough and were lucky actually to get the best seat at the corner of the counter with a full view of the kitchen!

SN3O5094

In such a cold part of Japan, entrances are deceptively narrow to keep the cold out, but once inside you usually find yourself with plenty of space!
But it is still cold for some and knee blankets are available!

SN3O5093

Such a spot by the counter does not seem that popular there and we were really glad to grab it, which allowed us not only to watch the chefs at work but to share a chat with them!

SN3O5092Of course I ordered local sake!

In Kamazawa City, izakayas are proud of their heritage and always have plenty of local sake on their menu!

SN3O5293

For a long time Chef Onoda at Caravin Restaurant in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City had promised to challenge boudin noir or blood (pork) sausage!

SN3O5294

Back in France it is delicacy you can buy anywhere to eat back at home, but in Japan it is still very much a rarity, especially home-made!

A truly magnificent if somewhat of modest origins with all the extras needed!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

Gastronomic Destinations: Kanazawa City 1-Mori Mori Sushi!

SN3O5036

Service: Easy-going and friendly
Facilities and Equipment: Overall very clean. Very clean wasroom
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Very good value for many local fish and seafood! Better than average conveyor belt sushi! Entirely non-smoking!

SN3O5026

Usually I’m not so keen on kaiten sushi/回転すし/Conveyor belt sushi, but when you happen to enjoy food in a Prefecture and City famed for their fish and seaood I’m willing to make a concession, with a few conditions attached that is!

SN3O5052

Mori Mori Sushi is a big sushi restaurant chain in Japan, with no less than 15 establishments allowing them to make extensive use of computerized service.

SN3O5029

It is a busy place, but you do not have to sit elbow to elbow with other customers as the “belts” also run along the booth-style table seatings!

SN3O5027

The table we were offered was the epitome of sushi high tech!

SN3O5031

You can choose your morsels in two different manners:
via the computer digital screen or by picking plates running along on belts!

SN3O5043

Now I must admit that this system should appeal to non-Japanese speaking tourists as you can switch to English, Korean, Chinese and Mandarin (Taiwan) Chinese!

SN3O5028

The lid covered plates running along is a show by itself!

SN3O5047

Plenty of simple instructions:
Smoking prohibited!
Do not ride the belts (that’s for silly kids!)!
Mind your sleeves!
Do not return a plate onto the belt!

SN3O5048

You are free to collect leftovers to take back home! (no waste!)
Pay your bill to the staff at your table (no need to search for the register. You can pay by card at your table!)!
Refrain from drinking alcohol if you are driving!
No pets allowed!
Do not block large trays on the belt (such large trays are private oreders, anyway!)!

SN3O5032

The belt move slowly enough for you to look and pick up an individual plate!

SN3O5030

Yummy!

SN3O5039

These trays on the train are private orders that will be delivered at only one table. Don’t try to block it!

SN3O5033

Don’t worry, there are plenty of cartes on hands for the analogs like me to have a good look at the offereings!

SN3O5035

have a good look at the sets, too!

SN3O5034

Gunkans/ships and Rolls!

SN3O5038

There is also a special additional daily menu! You might need some help there!

SN3O5036

Our first set, all different shrimps!

SN3O5037

Our second set!

SN3O5040

We had just disembarked from a 4-hour train trip and were very hungry at this first lunch so we ordered some extra!
“Gasuebi sshrimps”!

SN3O5041

Sea urchin and salmon roe!

SN3O5042

Shiroebi shrimps”!

SN3O5044

Scallops!

SN3O5045

Natto and cuttle fish/squid!

SN3O5046

Negitoro and quail eggs!

SN3O5049

Our last order came by train!

SN3O5050

Tamagoyaki nigiri!

SN3O5051

When you call for your bills the staff will pass a computer reader along them and voila, your bill will be ready!
Note that the plates are of different colors indicating a pre-ordained price including drinks. So do not worry if you are served empty colored plates with your drinks!
Tea is free and you can mix it and serve it yourself thanks to a hot water tap at your table!

Japanese Izakaya & Seafood Restaurant: Senbon Ichi in Numazu City!

SN3O4888

Service: Shy but attentive and kind
Facilities: Traditional but very clean. Very clean washroom.
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Local fish directly from the harbor. Excellent local sake list

SN3O4878

Senbon Ichi is a very traditional Japanese izakaya which specializes in fish as it is located in the middle of Numazu City fishing harbor, a major in Japan that Tokyo couldn’t do without!

SN3O4893

The draft beer served there, although not by a Shizuoka Brewery, is brewed in Shizuoka Prefecture!

As the Numazu harbor has been recently completely renovated I paid it a short visit before planning a longer one for an extensive report. I still took the time to eat lunch at Senbon Ichi (which has two establishments under the generic name of Minato Ichi/湊一).

SN3O4894

I want this poster of all the fishes caught in Japan!

SN3O4895

At lunch time the main dining room is non smoking. Take a seat near the windows and you shouldn’t be affected by the smokers at the counter!

SN3O4896

Great take-out deep-fried seafood available at reasonable prices, too!

SN3O4892

Very good point in their favor: they serve no less than 14 local sake!

SN3O4877

We decided to order the two specialties of the season and share them!

SN3O4881

Dragon ordered the sakura ebi kakiage donburi/sushi rice top with deep-fried cherry shrimps, the specialty of Shizuoka!

SN3O4880

A real beauty and plenty of it!

SN3O4887

I pinched a few to eat with the beer! Great snack, I assure you!

SN3O4890

The interesting thing is that there is a layer of grilled horse mackerel under the shrimps!
Actually Dragon was also provided with hot tea to mix it with some of her donburi for a great o-cha-zuke!

SN3O4888

As for me, I ordered a sushi donburi topped with local fish and seafood only!

SN3O4883

A photograph for my gastronomic collection!

SN3O4884

Raw shirasu/sardine whiting, sardine, horse mackerel, negitoro/grated tuna!

SN3O4885

Amberjack and a rose of tuna!

SN3O4886

Tamagoyaki, seabream and prawn!

SN3O4889

You will find a layer of finely chopped dry seaweed between the sushi rice and the sashimi!
So healthy!

Food & Drinks Bloggers in Japan (amended October 2013)

The number of foreigners and Japanese nationals who write about the food and drinks in Japan in English (or at least answer comments in English) has remarkably increased lately.
I thought it was about time to start some kind of round-up to help people discover these deserving foodies and their blogs! The list below is far from exhaustive, but I’m planning to update and announce it regularly!
Of course if you know more foodies residing in Japan, do please direct them to me and I will introduce them gladly!

Japanese Izakaya: Hinayaoshi in Mishima City!

IZAKAYA RANKING: +3
Service: +3 Very friendly and attentive
Facilities: +3 Overall very clean. Beautiful washroom
Prices:+1=+2 Reasonable
Strong points: Sake, Shochu, Umeshu, local seafood, yakitori

See “Izakaya Ranking” system at bottom of article!

SN3O4922

Chef Nobeteru Oota/太田のべてるさん opened Inayoshi 12 years ago in Mishima City and moved it to its present location 6 ears ago 7 minutes walk from Mishima JR Station south exit.

SN3O4916

Even after 6 years of constant cooking and serving the place is spotless clean!
When you realize he has only his wife and sometimes his mother-in-law to help, Nobeteru must be extremely busy morning to night ordering, buying and taking back home the day’s fish, vegetables and what else!

SN3O4915

With an incredible ist of 50 sake including about 25 from Shizuoka Prefecture, an unending list of shochu (even some featuring Shizuoka!), awamori and umeshu, this must be the place to go drinking in the east of the Prefecture,
You will soon understand how the place is so deservedly popular as it is full by 6:30 pm! Make sure to reserve beforehand!

SN3O4913

The sashimi is simply first-class and would be impossible to pay in Tokyo as the fish comes directly from the major fishing harbors of Numazu City, Shimoda City in Izu Peninsula! The plate above even includes rare Shizuoka Botan ebi/large sweet prawn and Tobiuo/flying fish from Shimoda! Moreve,r Nobeteru makes a point, even when the place is full, to introduce each fish and its origin to each customer!

SN3O4914

This time we sampled only tsukune/chicken balls and shiri/chicken tail, but you must come again just for the yakitori!
Actually it would be hard to try everything the first visit so be warned!

SN3O4917

The raw fish is extraordinary and the cooked fish sublime such as the “negima” above with tuna and amberjack served with yuzu koshio and grated daikon and ginger!

SN3O4919

If you like tofu you must ask for agedashi dofu, a must-try japanaese delicacy!

SN3O4920

The soup is just perfect! No wonder that in these times of economical crisis the establishment is full with local regulars!

SN3O4921

Seafood and vegetables steamed in Seikyou Miso! The wife will first open it for you, eventually let you take a photograph and mix it for you!

This was our first visit, but since it is so worth spending on a train ticket expect more articles soon!

Japanese Izakaya: Odakkui in Shizuoka City!

Service: Very friendly, smiling and attentive in an easy-going manner
Facilities & equipment: Very clean overall. Superb washroom (mouthwash provided!)
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: True izakaya gastronomy of a higher level. Local products extensively used. Great list of sake, shochu. Wine available. Private rooms possible.

Odakkui had been a solid institution when the owner decided to renew the whole place when the building housing them was to be rebuilt.
It has now become just a superb establishment which must be one of the best three izakayas in the whole Prefecture without a doubt!

Chief Manager and Chef Nobuhiro Sugiyama/杉山信廣 at work.

The restaurant is now divided into three distinct rooms to satisfy all customers’ priorities and preferences.
-The main restaurant (called “Omote/おもて/Front”) with a large window overlooking the main street, a counter in front of the kitchen and a large tatami area with dug-in seating.
-A cozy bar-style room (called “Ura/うら/Back”) seating only 5 customers (prices are the same in every room) away from the main room where fried food is prepared. The two rooms communicate through a long corridor bridging the access stairs.
-If you wish for even more privacy three rooms are located behind the small bar. The same rooms can have their partitions taken away for a single private room party.

Don’t worry! There are drinks for every taste including soft ones!

Including plenty of wine!

Plenty of tempting cold foods in wait for you!

For our first visit of newly reformed izakaya the Missus and I opted for the quiet “Ura/Back” bar-style room.
It is just impossible to sample everything in a single visit so we concentrated our order away from fried food we will sample in the “Omote/Front” room next time.

But first the drinks!
While the Missus was sipping her red wine by the glass I started with a cup of Shizuoka sake concocted by Kokko Brewery in Fukuroi City called “Den Ichirou/傳一郎/the professional name of its master Brewer!

One will understand at once the level of an izakaya, whatever the prices (comparatively reasonable in Odakkui considering the quality), when you look at the o-tooshi/お通し/first snack served with first drink: Odakkui’s is not only generous, but absolutely yummy and artfully served on a beautiful Japanese paper napkin!

We always order a plate of seasonal sashimi, another clear indication of the level of any izakaya.
Odakkui’s is just superb! How much would you pay for that in Tokyo? LOL

Beautiful Red Cuttlefish/Aka Ika/赤烏賊! Perfect , almost crispy, bite!

Lean tuna/maguro akami/鮪赤身 that melts inside your mouth. Served with freshly grated Shizuoka wasabi root!

Sole/Hirame/平目 served with its engawa/縁側/Fringe flesh which is usually discarded in Western Cuisine but which is a delicacy here in Japan. No need to say it must absolutely fresh!

A little “service” that you will not be offered for free outside our Prefecture: Home-marinated wasabi stems!
A must-try!

The Missus was keeping to her red wine but it was time for another cup of sake (I was actually offered a “service” cup from another Prefecture in between… the joys of my work!): two different bottles of Toyo Bijin/東洋美人/Beauty of the East from Fukui Prefecture.
Now, which bottle did I choose?
The red label one, naturally!

We couldn’t resist one of the comfort food on display in front of us: grilled bacon and potato salad!

Plenty of fresh vegetables in a well-balanced salad!

Now, another Japanese specialty you will find in any good izakaya, kushiyakiya and yakitoriya: niwatori nankotsu karaage/鶏軟骨唐揚げ/deep-fried chicken cartilages!

Crispy, cracking and so yummy!
needless to say that the chicken must be absolutely fresh!

We had spent a long day walking outside and we were hungry.
No better comfort food than hot (in both senses) mabodofu!

Now, if you a rice fan, you must try Odakkui’s ishi yaki chahan/石焼きチャハン/earthenware fried rice!

A truly Japanese fried rice topped with dried seaweed. A whole meal in itself!

A little detail I always appreciate in a good izakaya: delicious sorbet to refresh yourself!

To be continued… I told you I will have to come up with a report on the Omote/Front room!

Meat Gastronomy: My Best 10 dishes (and extras!) in Shizuoka in 2012!

My own creation: penne with Shizuoka wild boar simmered in red wine!

Shizuoka Prefecture is not only renown for its many vegetable and seafood varieties but also for its extravagant meat, be it beef, veal, lamb, chicken, wild boar or venison!
Pay a regular visit the many superlative restaurants that serve extravagant food at reasonable prices to make even gastronomes living in Europe and elsewhere envious!

Here is my own biased selection of the 10 top meat dishes I had the pleasure to savor in 2012 plus some extra to garnish the whole!

Gizzards, heart and liver on a poached egg of the same Amagi Shamo chicken bred at Horie Farm in Shuzenji, Izu Peninsula and served inside a Shizuoka-grown buckwheat galette and Shizuoka-grown wasabi leaves at Pissenlit French Restaurant in Shizuoka City!

The best of Japanese yakitori!
Chicken tsukune/long chicken patties made with ground chicken and crushed soft chicken cartilages served at Kushiyaki Taisho in Shizuoka City!
