Japanese Gastronomy: Lunch at Totoya in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5417

Service: Friendly and attentivr. Easy-going.
Equipment & Facilities: A bit old but overall very clean. Clean washroom
Prices: Reasonable~Slightly expensive
Strong points: Traditional Japanese gastronomy. Great local fish and seafood. Excellent sake and shochu list. French spoken!

SN3O5409

I had been intrigued by this particular Japanese restaurant as it has stood for a long time in a location near my work. I knew it was a busy place but I just couldn’t get the opportunity to give it a try!

SN3O5410

As I cycled past it I noticed they were also busy at lunch time, usually a good sign at such an establishment!

SN3O5411

Great noren/暖簾/Entrance curtain with a big catfish!

SN3O5426

I discovered these karasumi/botarga/boutargue/mullet roe drying just past the entrance! The fish were caught in Suruga Bay off Numazu harbor! It confirmed the good impression!
And I had a really unusual surprise: I found out that the lady serving me was speaking fluent French! A rarity as she is only the second such lady I know work for a Japanese restaurant in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5414

One can eat on four different floors in a very traditional Japanese atmosphere depending on priorities and affluence!

SN3O5415

I had lunch on the second floor for my first visit but next time I might be tempted to eat at the minuscule counter on the first floor to have a good look at the chefs!

SN3O5416

I opted for the full lunch “Totoya Zen/ととや膳” to taste as many things as possible!

SN3O5417

here is my lunch, although two more dishes came later!

SN3O5418

Steamed rice and cold hijiki seaweed kinpira!

I looked at my neigbors’ other orders and I found out they were even bigger than mine! Very generous portions indeed!

SN3O5419

Red miso soup and home-made pickles!

SN3O5420

A Shizuoka specialty: Sakura ebi kakiage/Cherry shrimps deep-fried in batter!

SN3O5421

Tuna skin salad with vinegar and miso dressing!

SN3O5422

SN3O5422

The sashimi plate and the salmon roe!

SN3O5423

Bottom left to right: uni/sea urchin, tako/octopus
Second row: hotate/scallops, kanburi/winter amberjack
Back row: freshly caught sakura ebi/cherry shrimps

Actually my neighbors ask for them as a supplement when they saw served to me! Obviously they were not from Shizuoka as they ate them one at a time!

SN3O5424

A specialty at Totoya! Broiled tuna cheek!

SN3O5425

Another sign of excellence: Succulent home-made almond blanc manger!

I’ll have to go there alone in my own good time in the evening again soon!
Until then…!

Entirely Non-Smoking Restaurants in Shizuoka Prefecture (as of December 2013)

TETSUA-SUGIMOTO

Beautiful Vegetables at Tetsuya Sugimoto in Shizuoka City!

I agree that this particular article has been long overdue.
Not only my expats friends, but many Japanese friends have been at pains at finding restaurants, bars and cafes where they wouldn’t have to put up with the hazards and stink of smoke inhaled and expelled by uncaring customers.
Some time ago I mentioned partially non-smoking restaurants but I see little point to mention them unless the entirely non-smoking times are clearly announced and respected!

This is of course not an exhaustive list, but it will be regularly updated as I visit establishments for work!
There is no special order to this list, they come as they come!

One more important point: Non-smoking is not the only criterion, good food is, too!
If you are kind enough to recommend me restaurants not introduced here it will be my pleasure to survey them!

Nepalese-Indian Gastronomy: Vegetarian Lunch at Namaste Nippon in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5543

Service: Very friendly, polite and smiling
Facilities & Equipment: Very clean overall. Spacious washroom
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: A great blend of Indian and Nepalese cuisines. More than sufficient drinks list. Vegetarian set or single dishes available. Very generous portions!

SN3O5536

Namaste Nippon Nepalese-Indian Restaurant and its bright colors have been standing along the Kitakaido Street in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, 10 minutes walk from Cenova Department Store, and had often been recommended to me by friends.
I took advantage of free time at lunch yesterday to pay them a belated visit!

SN3O5540

The owner and the staff all hail from Nepal but the chefs graduated from a cooking school in India, allowing them to combine the two cuisines with even a little Japanese twist at times!

SN3O5537

Lunch time is particularly busy and they do have a hefty menu!
One can choose from set menus or single dishes.
I already know I’ll have to plan a few more visits!
A good idea, since they serve a great variety of drinks including Shizuoka sake, would be to g there for a drink in the evening and eat their food as snacks!

SN3O5538

I chose the vegetarian set lunch which should give me a good idea of the chefs’ skills!
It includes a lot!

SN3O5539

But first of all I had to taste a “Nepal Ice” beer!

SN3O5542

Enormous potato samosa with vegetable salad!

SN3O5550

It would be enough as a great snack in the evenings!

SN3O5543

The Vegetarian Lunch Plate, which includes the aforementioned samosa and a drink!

SN3O5544

You can choose 2 out of 3 curries (sorry, this is how it is written on the Jpanese menu! Mind they all speak fluent English):
I opted for the above “Parapanilu” spinach and cttage cheese curry!

SN3O5545

Dahl/beans Curry!
The third one was “Alparaku” Potato and Cottage Cheese!

SN3O5546

Italian Gastronomy: Dinner at Il Castagno (November 2013) in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5519

Granapado Cheese and pumpkin raviolis!

Service: Very friendly and attentive
Equipment: Great general cleanliness
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Great appetizers. Home-made pasta!. Great use of local products from the land and the sea. Southern Italy and Sardinia gastronomy.
Entirely non-smoking!

SN3O5507

Il Castagno is a simple-looking small Italian restaurant, but it is actually one of the very top in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City for so many reasons!

SN3O5508

Apart of the fact that the establishment is entirely non-smoking allowing guests to fully enjoy the savors of his cuisine, Chef Kenji Inami/稲見謙司さん is always on the lookout for new ingredients, especially local, to introduce in a very original gastronomy based on Southern Italian and sometimes French cuisines!

SN3O5506

Plenty of reasonable wines available by the glass or bottle!
It had been quite some time since I had purposefully visited the place and it was about time last Friday to taste new offerings!

SN3O5504

As an appetizer we first a couple of great fresh oysters from Mie Prefecture!

SN3O5505

And the same just lightly steamed!

SN3O5509

We are in full season for kaki/柿/persimmons and we had persimmon fritters wrapped in raw ham!

SN3O5510

A little beauty!

SN3O5512

As the last starter we switched to French mode and had this lovely Terrine de Campagne!

SN3O5513

This is one dish Italians and French agree on!

SN3O5514

Served with local and seasonal marinated shiitake mushrooms!

SN3O5516

Naturally, we had to satisfy a craving for pasta!

SN3O5517

Shrimps, mussles and mini tomato sauce!

SN3O5518From the back, linguine!

SN3O5519

Chef Kenji Inami/稲見謙司さん’s half of his pasta is fresh and hand-made and includes some superb raviolis!
As he had two kinds on hand he was kind enough to combine them in a single dish!

SN3O5520

Amaretto-style pumpkin/kabocha raviolis served with shiitake and Granapadano cheese sauce!

SN3O5523

Very unusual raviolis in Japan!

SN3O5521

Granapadano cheese cream ravioli!

SN3O5522

Maybe more classic but very light and tasty! A morsel to slowly enjoy!

SN3O5529

And for dessert a succulent cheese cake and persimmon sorbet!

SN3O5526

Did you know that cheese cakes originated from Greece?

Hope to see you there again soon!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

Soba Buckwheat Noodles Restaurant: Tagata Zairai Soba in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5519

Service: Smiling and friendly
Equipment & Facilities: Overall extremely clean. Superb washroom if a bit small
Prices: Very reasonable
Strong points: Only native buckwheat used. Good sake and shochu list

SN3O5511

The other day two friends of mine who actually plan to study professionally the art of making soba suggested we all went for lunch to a new small soba restaurant which served buckwheat noodles exclusively made with Japanese buckwheat!
Of course I just couldn’t refuse discovering such a place knowing than more than 80% of soba we eat in this country are made from imported buckwheat flour!

SN3O5513

It is clearly indicated that the place serves only zarai soba/在来蕎麦/native buckwheat noodles!

SN3O5512

Of course all the noodles are made on site and are so reasonable. Even the local sake is reasonable! Remember that in Edo times sake was almost exclusively served at soba restaurants!

SN3O5514

Such a clean place!

SN3O5515

You do have to be a bit patient as noodles are prepared only upon order!

SN3O5516

Soup/broth for the noodles with grated wasabi and chopped scallions!

SN3O5517

My friends had ordered the lunch set so they shared their mushrooms musubi/rice balls with me!

SN3O5518

As well as some beautiful tamagoyaki served with grated daikon!

SN3O5519

My first serving of buckwheat noodles!
By the way the correct way to eat them is to first taste one without any seasoning then eat the rest dipping the soba into the broth (not too much, mind you!)!

SN3O5520

Really appetizing, aren’t they?

SN3O5521

Served on a beautiful earthen ware plate with the character ta/田 for “field” which is the first Chinese character of the restaurant place Tagata/田形!
On the left you will notice another beautiful earthenware pot containing the soba yu/蕎麦湯/hot water in which the same noodles were boiled to be added an drunk with whatever broth you have left!

SN3O5522

My second serving!

TAGATA ZAIRAI SOBA (make sure you understand the address as Tagata is a very common name for restaurants in Japan!)

Millefeuille Tonkatsu Lunch at Kiiro Izakya in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5073

Service: Very kind and smiling
Equipment and Facilities: Great cleanliness overall. No shoes allowed inside. Very clean washroom
Prices: Reasonable considering the enormous portions!
Strong points: pork and tonkatsu!

SN3O5061

I had been curious for some time about a new izakaya called “Kiiro/器いろ” which had opened this year just across my workplace. I had heard it used to be located in Ryogae Cho, Aoi Ku, before it moved to Takajo, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City, considered as the new gastronomic area of Shizuoka City.

SN3O5062

There is a general rule in Japan saying that one should try to eat and drink as far from one’s workplace as possible to protect one’s privacy, but it is simply impossible for me as I work just across a gastronomic treasure trove!

SN3O5063

I hadn’t noticed they were also open for lunch so it was about grand time I investigated!

SN3O5064

They are presently specializing in tonkatsu (pork cutlets and others) these days, although I heard later they used to serve udon lunches, which means I should hurry up before they change again!
The prices seemed a bit more expensive than those prevalent in lunch restaurants but the volume (200 g!) still guaranteed a good deal in the offing!

I was especially attracted by the dish called “Millefeuille Katsu/ミルフィーユかつ”!

SN3O5068

Authentic izakaya atmosphere inside!

SN3O5067

The place is full of antiques!

Note that you are requested to leave your shoes at the entrance. The floors are covered with very soft and comfortable carpets, a bit unusual for this type of establishment!

SN3O5069

I espied some sake from Shizuoka Prefecture, meaning I will have to visit the place again for dinner!

SN3O5065

More antiques!

SN3O5070

One reason I was particularly attracted was the fact that Kiiro uses only pork bred in Asagiri Plateau, north Izu peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. Eat local whenever you can!
Incidentally the meat comes from Yoghurt Ton Pigs!

SN3O5073

The Millefeuille Katsu Lunch Set!
Absolutely enormous!
Frankly speaking i had doubts as whether I could eat it all! (Of course, I did!)!
Really great value at 14 US $/13 euros!

SN3O5071

Red miso soup!

SN3O5066

A generous portion of home-made pickles!

SN3O5072

Plenty of rice served in a nice earthenware bowl!

SN3O5074

The millefeuille katsu served with a light tomato sauce! (BBQ Sauce is available!)
Enormous!
The plate must be around 20 cm in diameter!

SN3O5075

The millefeuille katsu is made of many thin slices of pork rolled together before deep-fried.
The pork is henceforth very light, extremely tender and so easy to eat!
As for the taste, this is definitely superior pork!

SN3O5076

So many vegetables for a superbly balanced lunch!
Mind you, I very much doubt you will be hungry in the evening!

SN3O5077

And even an home-made pudding for dessert!
Difficult to beat such good value!

See you soon there again for dinner!
