For Vegans & Vegetarians: Real Food Market Akutsu in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5056

My shopping of the day!
Asuparana/Orange and violet carrots/Violet Mizuna/Violetblack carrots and red daikon!

SN3O5019

It is not easy for vegans and vegetarians (I’m not but I try to help!) to find a good source of healthy vegetables, but here in Japan, and especially in Shizuoka Prefecture where vegetables are grown non-stop, it shouldn’t be difficult!

SN3O5020

No, this scarecrow is here for the fun and to tell you that all the vegetables sold there are organically grown!

SN3O5021

Oranges from Shimizu Ku!

Fine, but where do you find vegetables, especially organic ones, not only fresh and healthy but one you can trace back in all safety?

SN3O5022

Well, Mr. and Mrs Akutsu who opened Real Food Market Akutsu Shop 6 years ago know enough growers in Shizuoka Prefecture and beyond to be able to provide only organic and seasonal vegetables all year round from Hamamatsu, Iwata, Shizuoka, Fujinomiya, Mishima to cite only a few cities and more from beyond our borders.

SN3O5023

Greetings from the staff!

As for the fruit, they might not be organic but they are the healthiest available!
Even food for the non-vegan or vegetarian is the healthiest one could find!

SN3O5024

For the omnivorous customers healthy and very reasonably priced bento are available every day!

SN3O5025

Carrots, pumpkins and eggplants from Fujinomiya City, burdock roots from Miyazaki Prefecture!

SN3O5026

Daikon, ginger and taro!

SN3O5027

You can compose yoour bento!
Mr. and Mrs. Akutsu will help you with your priorities if told in advance!

SN3O5028

Organic rice, both milled and brown/whole from Iwata City!

SN3O5029

Nationally-known great eggs produced by Mr. Shimizu at “Bioran farm” in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5030

More bentos!

SN3O5047

I came back late in the afternoon for a new arrival of fresh organic vegetables!

SN3O5048

All producers’ names clearly indicated!

SN3O5049

beautiful red and violet daikon, carrots, oura burdock and so on!

SN3O5050

The ones with the flowers are called asuparana, that is asparagus plants as their taste reminds that of asparagus!
Beautiful in a salad or atop a dish!

SN3O5050

SN3O5051

They are too many to describe but when you visit the place do not hesitate to ask their names!

SN3O5052

These vegetables are especially grown organically for impaired people by Akatsuki Farm!

SN3O5053

Perfect traceability as some of the farmers even publish their photos!

SN3O5054

I love those long and thin turnips (not daikon) called hibino kabu!

SN3O5055

Ishigami Farm family in Tegoshi, Suruga Ku, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5056

My selection for the day!
Actually I had to come later to buy more for izakaya owner friends of mine!

Do come every day as new arrivals and new bentos are on siplay!

SN3O5174

It took a long time but finally the Shizuoka Government pledge to promote Shizuoka Prefecture Tourism seems to switched to action mode!
To all visitors (and residents) to Shizuoka City and Shizuoka Prefecture it would be time well spent to stop for a few minutes and have a good look at the posters the Government has put in the middle of Shizuoka JR STation for all to see!
And have a good look at the bottom of each poster which gives 3 good reasons to enjoy our Prefecture!
So let’s start with the first one!

SN3O5175

The SL train running from Kanaya Station/Oigawa Steam Locomotive/大井川SL to Senzu Station and its hot springs in the Japanese Southern Alps is feature known of all train buffs in the country!

Sakura Ebi! Cherry Shrimps/桜海老 which are exclusively caught in the Suruga Bay in Autumn and late Spring are a delicacy that the Japanese are ready to travel a very long way just to taste fresh and raw!

Kunozan Toshogu/久能山東照宮 is a Japanese Natonal Treasure with the relics of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the Overlord of Japan who retired to Sumpu/Shizuoka at the beginning of the 17th Century!

SN3O5176

The second poster!

SN3O5177

Okuni Shrine/小国神社 is a beautiful Shinto Shrine in the middle of beautiful forest in Mori Machi in Western Shizuoka Prefecture.
Now is the best time to visit it with all the leaves changing colors!

Hamamatsu Gyoza/浜松餃子are famous all over the country and are served in a peculiar crown shape with plenty of fried beansprouts in the middle!

For people interested in Buddhism a three day Buddhist Monk Life Experience can be enjoyed in Fukuroi City!

SN3O5170

The third poster!

SN3O5171

For Japanese hot spring lovers do visit one of the many hot springs by the sea in Kitagawa, Izu Peninsula!

And you cisit Izu Peninsula do not forget this is the season for succulent spiny lobsters!

For history amateurs visit Nirayamあ in Northern Izu Peninsula to have a look at the only existing ship gun foundry/hansyarou/反射炉 (Meiji Era) in Japan!

SN3O5172

Soba: Shizuoka Native Buckwheat Noodles at Teuchi Soba Tagata in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5188

Service: Friendly, attentive and informative
Equipment & Facilities: Very clean overall. Superb washroom.
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Only native buckwheat from Shizuoka and rest of Japan used. Great use of local seasonal ingredients. Great sake and shochu list.
Entirely non-smoking!

SN3O5179

Soba or buckwheat noodles is one of those underrated products in Shizuoka which ought to deserve more attention especially when you take in account that Shizuoka has produced its own soba for imemmorable times well before Tokugawa Ieyasu came to love them so much when he retired to Sumpu/Shizuoka in the beginning of the 17th Century!

SN3O5180

If one needed a single reason for patronizing Teuchi Soba Tagata would be that Chef Osamu Tagata/田形治さん not only uses exclusively Japanese native buckwheat/zairaishu soba/在来種蕎麦 from Shizuoka Prefecture and elsewhere in the country but also takes a rare pleasure extolling about his soba and other cuisine to whoever is interested or might ask!

SN3O5181

Of course I ordered “mori soba” made with native buckwheat grown in the mountains of Iwata in Central Shizuoka prefecture!
But I can assure it is not all about soba but more true Japanese gastronomy!

SN3O5182

You could always order a set menu but poring through the menu and choosing tidbits according to your whims is far more fun!

SN3O5183

The place is superbly clean but the dark wood color does not make photography easy! LOL

SN3O5184

What I enjoy at soba restaurants is looking at all the utensils served a few at a time, a good indication of the level of the establishment!

SN3O5185

On my next visit i will have to ask what secret brew is hidden inside that pot!

SN3O5186

The “mori soba” have come!

SN3O5187

Now, this lacquered box is a “mempa bento box” made only with cherry wood from Ikawa in the north of Shizuoka City!

SN3O5188

Soba made with native buckwheat from Ikawa, Shizuoka City as a “juwari/100%”!
Absolutely beautiful!

SN3O5189

Actually, Teuchi Soba Tagata in Shizuoka City is not only famed for their soba and cuisine but also for the superb sake (including Shizuoka, of course) and its beautiful shochu which also includes a beauty from Shizuoka Prefecture!
The above is sake brewed by Haginishiki Brewery in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5191

Deep-fried rekon/lotus roots grown in Asabata, Shizuoka City!

SN3O5192

Now, this is a bit special: these sato imo/taro roots are a native variety grown for centuries in Ikawa!
Served as tempura with a special miso paste, a must try!

SN3O5193

Soba yu/soba soup to mix with whatever soupstock/soba sauce you have left and drink to wash down your meal!

SN3O5194

I had to try another favorite: soba miso yaki!

SN3O5195

Buckwheat seeds grilled with miso paste!

SN3O5196

The last details are so important!
Wine-stewed figs and ice-cream!

More coming soon!

The number of foreigners and Japanese nationals who write about the food and drinks in Japan in English (or at least answer comments in English) has remarkably increased lately.
I thought it was about time to start some kind of round-up to help people discover these deserving foodies and their blogs! The list below is far from exhaustive, but I’m planning to update and announce it regularly!
Of course if you know more foodies residing in Japan, do please direct them to me and I will introduce them gladly!

Entirely Non-Smoking Restaurants in Shizuoka Prefecture (as of November 2013)

TETSUA-SUGIMOTO

Beautiful Vegetables at Tetsuya Sugimoto in Shizuoka City!

I agree that this particular article has been long overdue.
Not only my expats friends, but many Japanese friends have been at pains at finding restaurants, bars and cafes where they wouldn’t have to put up with the hazards and stink of smoke inhaled and expelled by uncaring customers.
Some time ago I mentioned partially non-smoking restaurants but I see little point to mention them unless the entirely non-smoking times are clearly announced and respected!

This is of course not an exhaustive list, but it will be regularly updated as I visit establishments for work!
There is no special order to this list, they come as they come!

One more important point: Non-smoking is not the only criterion, good food is, too!
If you are kind enough to recommend me restaurants not introduced here it will be my pleasure to survey them!

Vegan Restaurant: Kissa in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5524

Service: A bit shy but very friendly and attentive
Facilities & Equipment: Superb cleanliness overall. Superb washroom
Prices: reasonable
Strong points: Exclusively vegan gastronomy. No wheat flour. Only mineral water used. Entirely non-smoking!

SN3O5517

At last the second independent vegan restaurant has just opened in Shizuoka City right in the middle of the city along the Aoba Street!

SN3O5518

The name “Kissa” means “Cafe” in Japanese and “Cat” in Finnish, the real reason for the restaurant’s name!

SN3O5519

The menu bound to change with the seasons is clearly announced outside!

SN3O5520

The staff are shy but very friendly and attentive!

SN3O5521

you can choose between a seat (chair or sofa) at a table or at a small counter!

SN3O5522

And the place is so clean!
May I remind you it is totally non-smoking!

SN3O5523

Another kissa/cat!

SN3O5536

This must be the healthiest restaurant in Shizuoka City as they don’t use white sugar, wheat flour, eggs, dairy products and cook only in mineral water!

SN3O5524

This is the lunch (Japanese-style) that I ordered!

SN3O5535

And the tea that they serve is organic and has been matured from 3 years, making it lose most of its caffeine!

SN3O5533

The organic tea!

SN3O5525

Steamed white rice mixed with black/violet rice.
Incidentally all the vegetables, including the rice are organic whenever possible!

SN3O5526

Stewed Takano tofu and vegetables!

SN3O5527

Vegetables and tofu miso soup!

SN3O5528

Home-made pickles!

SN3O5529

Fresh vegetables salad. The broccoli is grown by the owner in her own garden!

SN3O5530

Persimmon and apple in tofu cream sauce!

SN3O5531

Konnyaku!

SN3O5532

The owner, knowing I had a special interest in her cuisine because of some of my friends who are vegan (I’m not) offered me her minestrone vegetable soup (only vegetables)! Very tasty indeed!

SN3O5534

While I was at it I ordered a dessert not waiting for tea time!
Their anko/sweet meat is home-made!
They do not use sugar but “karanka/Siraitia grosvenorii” whose fruit is 300 times sweeter and is recommended to diabetics!

SN3O5537

The dessert!

SN3O5538

Beautiful and very satisfying! Incidentally the jelly is made with local agar! Did you know that Shizuoka is a major producer of natural agar in Japan?

I’ll keep you posted about the different menus!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

Soba Buckwheat Noodles Restaurant: Tagata Zairai Soba in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5519

Service: Smiling and friendly
Equipment & Facilities: Overall extremely clean. Superb washroom if a bit small
Prices: Very reasonable
Strong points: Only native buckwheat used. Good sake and shochu list

SN3O5511

The other day two friends of mine who actually plan to study professionally the art of making soba suggested we all went for lunch to a new small soba restaurant which served buckwheat noodles exclusively made with Japanese buckwheat!
Of course I just couldn’t refuse discovering such a place knowing than more than 80% of soba we eat in this country are made from imported buckwheat flour!

SN3O5513

It is clearly indicated that the place serves only zarai soba/在来蕎麦/native buckwheat noodles!

SN3O5512

Of course all the noodles are made on site and are so reasonable. Even the local sake is reasonable! Remember that in Edo times sake was almost exclusively served at soba restaurants!

SN3O5514

Such a clean place!

SN3O5515

You do have to be a bit patient as noodles are prepared only upon order!

SN3O5516

Soup/broth for the noodles with grated wasabi and chopped scallions!

SN3O5517

My friends had ordered the lunch set so they shared their mushrooms musubi/rice balls with me!

SN3O5518

As well as some beautiful tamagoyaki served with grated daikon!

SN3O5519

My first serving of buckwheat noodles!
By the way the correct way to eat them is to first taste one without any seasoning then eat the rest dipping the soba into the broth (not too much, mind you!)!

SN3O5520

Really appetizing, aren’t they?

SN3O5521

Served on a beautiful earthen ware plate with the character ta/田 for “field” which is the first Chinese character of the restaurant place Tagata/田形!
On the left you will notice another beautiful earthenware pot containing the soba yu/蕎麦湯/hot water in which the same noodles were boiled to be added an drunk with whatever broth you have left!

SN3O5522

My second serving!

TAGATA ZAIRAI SOBA (make sure you understand the address as Tagata is a very common name for restaurants in Japan!)
