Seafood & Fish at Parche Supermarket in Shizuoka City!

Now is the time to have a good look (and buy) seafood and fish at the big supermarket in Parche, Shizuoka JR Station, in Shizuoka City, especially local!
I had a quick look today as I was shopping for tonight’s dinner and I did find some things of great interest as usual!

SN3O0187

Large lobsters! Live!

SN3O0188

At 698 yen for 100 grams, they are not cheap, but they will not stay long there!
They were caught in the Suruga Bay off Mochimune, one the main fishing harbors in Shizuoka City with those of Shimizu and Yui!

SN3O0194

More than in French or Italian Restaurants they will find their way to some expensive/exclusive Japanese restaurant as these are wild lobsters!

SN3O0189

Gambas/tenagaebi (not to be confused with river water shrimps of the same name!)! Live!
Same price tag as for live wild lobsters!
The ones found in the Suruga Bay are famous all over the country!

SN3O0190

These will definitely find their way in one of the top Italian restaurants in town!

SN3O0191

Fish freshly brought from harbors in Shozuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0192

They had been brought to harbor less than 12 hours ago!
Soles, sailfish sandfish, sea robins, leather jackets/Thread-sail filefish, umasura, meita and Barred Knifejaws!
All local, wild and fresh!

Service: Easy-going and friendly
Facilities: Very clean overall. Beautiful washroom inside Den Bulding.
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Craft beers only!

SN3O0184

I had a very f\good reason to visit Aoi Beer Stand in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City today!
They started serving a great snack: Char siu/叉燒/チャーシュー made by Mr. Tsurutaya in Shizuoka City!
Actually, Mr. Tsurutaya is in the process of moving his ramen restaurant to Aoi Ku. I shall be able to pay him a visit soon!

SN3O0182

The char siu!

SN3O0186

Incidentally the beer I had with my char siu was a Pale Ale brewed by Minoo Brewery/箕面 いんOsaka City!

SN3O0185

Now, this elegant char siu concocted by Mr. Tsurutaya is not your run-of-the-mill foodstuff.
This is a real delicacy, tender, juicy, tasty and quite healthy in fact!
Perfect with beer!

French Gastronomy: Pan-fried Seabream and Organic Spring Vegetables at Pissenlit in Shizuoka City!

Service: Excellent and very friendly.
Facilities: Great cleanliness overall. Superb washroom (mouthwash and toothpicks provided!)!
Prices: Reasonable to slightly expensive, very good value.
Strong points: Interesting wine list. Great use of local products, especially organic vegetables and Shizuoka-bred meat and caught fish. Very inventive French gastronomy.

Shizuoka has an abundant supply of fish, especially madai/真鯛/True seabream, and a wealth of vegetables in Spring!
It is only a question of combining them together!

SN3O0170

Chef Toru Arima/有馬亨さん keeps things simple.
he will first fry the fish skin down over a hot fire until it it has attained a paper thin cracking aspect.
Then he will turn it over and let it cook for a while inside the oven!

SN3O0171

All the spring vegetables are first lightly boiled in slightly salted water, drained and placed on the plate.
Notice the long rape flower placed under the fish to make sure that it does not come in direct contact with plate! Both decorative and technical!

SN3O0173

For a better view of the succulent fish!

SN3O0174

The sauce is an extraordinarily elegant and healthy seasoning made with walnuts, shiso/perilla leaves, asparagus and anchovy!

SN3O0176

Cauliflower, red daikon and snap peas in their pod!

SN3O0177

Rape flower and petit vert Brussels sprout!

SN3O0172

Et voila!

French Gastronomy: Lunch at Chez Mont-Pierre in Shizuoka City!

Service: Very friendly, accommodating and helpful
Equipment & Facilities: Superb cleanliness overall. Extravagant washroom. Entirely non-smoking. Separate room for families with children.
Prices:V ery reasonable considering the quality and generosity
Strong points: High class Classical French gastronomy with a modern and inventive touch. Excellent wine list.

As I said before, Shizuoka City is divided into 3 distinct wards, Aoi Ku, Suruga Ku, and Shimizu Ku. Suruga Ku south of Shizuoka JR Station is rapidly evolving into a gastronomic area to provide for a growing population and palliate for the congested Aoi Ku north of Shizuoka JR Station.

SN3O0143

Chef Kenichi Meguro/目黒研一さん at Chez Mont-Pierre is, without a doubt, the reference when it comes to French gastronomy in the whole of Suruga Ku!
It is a bit away from everywhere but they do own a big enough car park!

SN3O0144

The two single menus proposed for lunch are very good value and you definitely need to call beforehand to make sure a table is free!

SN3O0145

I decided to order the second menu for the sheer curiosity of it!

SN3O0146

Classical atmosphere!
But don’t worry, they do not ask guests to overdress for the occasion.
Actually, for all the grand impression one can really relax and enjoy the occasion at ease!

All the vegetables are grown in Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0164

Another look at the salad!

SN3O0165

The seafood made up succulent clams!

SN3O0166

The vegetables and vegetables puree!

SN3O0167

I opted for the fish as the main course! The meat will be for another visit!

SN3O0168

Madai/seabream with vegetables garland and fruit sauce!

SN3O0169

The flowers are edible!

SN3O0171

The pre-dessert!

SN3O0172

Milk pudding and sherry wine jelly!

SN3O0170

The first dessert trolley!
But wait for the second coming together!

SN3O0162

The second trolley!
This must the best cake trolley choice in the whole Prefecture!
No less than 13 superb home-made cakes!
I suspect that many ladies among my neighbors came for this sole purpose!
Everyone around me seemed to have at least 3 (and more!) cuts on their plate!
But I chose only one.
Actually the waitress guessed my choice!

SN3O0173

Tarte Tatin!

SN3O0174

Sheer extravagant simplicity!

SN3O0175

And coffee as it should be served!

Yes, I did have a glass of wine (white!)!

SN3O0176

And don’t forget to check the section of biscuits/cakes on sale at the entrance!

Grand time the Michelin Guide visited Shizuoka!

French Gastronomy: Dinner at La Table Du Boucher in Shizuoka City!

Service: Easy-going and attentive
Facilities & Equipment: Very clean overall. Excellent washroom. Entirely non-smoking!
Prices: Slightly expensive
Strong points: French Bistro specialties, especially meat! Doubles up as a wine bar!

SN3O5801

French gastronomy and restaurants are not so many in Shizuoka City which tends more for Italian tastes, so it is always with an augmented pleasure when you can find a new one!

SN3O5796

La Table du Boucher (the Butcher’s Table) specializes, as its name indicates, in meat dishes found in all corners of France. But it also the particularity to double up as a wine bar!

SN3O5781

The other particularity, and a real boon for a wine bar, is that it is entirely non-smoking!

SN3O5778

The only problem I would have is because of the cozy atmosphere it is quite dark inside, making pictures difficult to take!

SN3O5777

The often changed menu is seasonal, eclectic and making great use of local and non-local products including a lot of home-made meat dishes!

SN3O5783

What did we have for our visit, then?
Oyster Gratin!

SN3O5787

Enormous seasonal salad!

BOUCHER-9

My recommendation:
Cassoulet with home-made pork sausages! Succulent!
I would have this any time with a heady red wine!

SN3O5790

Roasted quail!

SN3O5793

Linguine with fresh shiitake mushrooms!

Now, there two other dishes we couldn’t order that time for lack of stomach space I would like to introduce:

BOUCHER-12a

Apple and foie gras terrine!

BOUCHER-12b

Roasted poultry in fruit sauce and potato gratin!

SN3O5797

Expresso and chocolates to finish!

SN3O5799

Great chocolates, incidentally!

Look forward to other reports as I’m extremely tempted by the wine bar concept, too!

Healthy Chinese Gastronomy at CHAO in Shizuoka City (Cenova Department Store)!

SN3O0016

Avocado and Mushrooms Tianjin omelet rice!

Service: Kind, smiling and attentive in spite of a crowded place!
Equipment & Facilities: Very clean overall. Shared washroom with Cenove Department Store but very excellent. Entirely non-smoking!
Prices: Reasonable
Strong points: Mild but very healthy All-Chinese gastronomy

SN3O0006

When it comes to reasonable, healthy food in a clean environment Cenova Department Store in Aoi Ku, Shizuoka Citycan be a blessing even if it is crowded at times.
Dragon recommended me CHAO the other day and I paid it my first visit at lunch today.
The place was actually busy but I was ushered in with a smile and attention.
When I placed my order the waitress went as far as to inquire if I had ordered too much!
So, what did I order?

SN3O0009

A set of five dimdung/点心!

SN3O0014

Great colors!
I checked after my meal, they do not use any monosodium glutamate (MSG) or artificial coloring or seasoning!

SN3O0015

From another angle!
Very tasty and light!

SN3O0010

Umami tappuri ebichiri/Sweet and sour chili shrimps with plenty of umami!

SN3O0012

Very appetizing indeed!

SN3O0012

The shrimps tasted fresh. Very mild for such a dish but this is Japan and especially Shizuoka where people are not too keen on hot food! Fine by me!

SN3O0011

Avocado and mushrooms Tianjin omelet rice!

SN3O0016

Another good point for Chao is that they do try to offer food with a little originality. Their four dishes including avocado was a revelation!

SN3O0018

Once again so healthy and tasty!

SN3O0017

As service, egg soup made with real chicken soup!

Another visit is definitely on the cards!

N.Y. Hot Chocolate & “Two Tone” at BLUE BOOKS Cafe in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5473

Service: Very friendly, smiling and attentive
Equipment & Facilities: Great overall cleanliness. Superb washroom in same building separated from the cafe.
Prices: Reasonable for such big servings!
Strong points: Very generous cafe/bistro multi-genred gastronomy. Great variety. Great products. Entirely non-smoking in very modern atmosphere. Great books!

BLUE BOOKS cafe is a great place for hamburgers, hot sandwiches, salads and books, but it is also a cafe which tries to introduce new drinks on their menu on a constant basis!
Certainly appreciable in cold winter!

SN3O5472

The best time to enjoy such drinks in middle afternoon or early evening when the place is not as crowded as usual!

SN3O5476

Time to relax!

SN3O5471

They have two new drinks on the menu these days.
The first one is N.Y. Chocolate!

SN3O5473

Intriguing and appetizing!

SN3O5474

It is a very thick hot chocolate drink topped with a marshmallow and cocoa powder!
You need a spoon to scoop it all. I mean the chocolate drink at the bottom of the cup!

SN3O5475

Of course you need the spoon to either eat the marshmallow or mix it in!

SN3O5652

The second drink is called “Two Tone”

SN3O5653

It is actually a latte with thick chocolate and expresso coffee mixed in for a double sensation!

SN3O5654

Soft whipped milk on top!

SN3O5655

Really appetizing from above!

Non Smoking Japan: You want to Smoke? Go to the Toilets! Cenova Department Store in Shizuoka City!

SN3O5590

No, you are not allowed to smoke inside the toilets, but…………

SN3O5586

Yesterday I did have to use the washroom inside Cenova Department Store in Shizuoka City when I got intrigued to see a couple coming out together out of the same door…
They did not look that happy…
Actually they had come out of one of the washrooms but out of a room reserved for smokers!

SN3O5587

The Gents’ Washroom!

SN3O5588The Ladies’ washroom!

Luckily there was nobody around when I took the pictures, otherwise,….

SN3O5589
The Smokers’ Room!

Note the general grey color!

I do think that Cenova has a good idea there. Instead of providing a special space for smokers, the notionof directing them to the toilets will impress a new thinking in their heads!
